I did it. I gave Reply 1997 a chance. And I loved it! The characters were cute and interesting but I already knew that from my first attempt. What got me into the show was all the META. The show went hard on the meta and I absolutely loved it. Eun Ji Won watching his own movie as a ’90s high schooler’ and commenting on it’s terrible acting – his words not mine but I agree – while his show girlfriend fangirls and squeals over movie him (are you following this?) is now one of my favorite kdrama scenes. Despite the (rather impressive) amount of dramas and movies under my belt, I am still a kdrama baby, unfortunately, so it took me a lot of research to figure out the connections and Korean 90s inside jokes but it was very much worth it. It was nicely written and the whole will they – won’t they angst thing the show had going on was only occasionally slightly annoying. Thank you @spazmo for the nudge. I loved it. Yelling, swearing, teen romance, angst, frog scares, meta and all.
