A recurring parody is from the film “The Merciless” (also starring ISW). I think it has been referenced thrice already (or maybe even more?). The “is that a real gun” scene, and a lot of scenes from Codename Candy sequences refer to that film. It’s also nice how they plug-in international indie films. I miss going to international film festivals, watching films in a cinema where there are only three people, or sometimes jampacked with people. Watching films with a film festival discount, and arguing with your friends what didn’t make sense, or what touched you the most. Corona, what have you done.
the popular ones are: ET, Winnie the Pooh, Jerry Maguire, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Psycho, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Batman (The Dark Knight), Godfather, Casablanca, A Trip To the Moon (the recurring projected film in Mae-yi’s office)
Korean Films/personalities: Bong Joon Ho (Director), Merciless, A Moment to Remember, The Handmaiden, A Bittersweet Life, Temptation of Wolves
International Indie films/short films: Falsified (short film) , Cold Comfort
Other references: Slam Dunk (Seo Tae Woong, Kang Baek Ho reference)
These are just a few of the film references! I think I may have missed some films, especially the korean ones because it’s hard to recall.
Awesome list!! Thank you!!
There was a script that was being read and marked up by Mi-joo too – wondering if that is listed. I didn’t recognize any of the Korean films except for A Moment to Remember.
I miss film festivals too! Except that my friends don’t care about them much. So I end up going on my own. And then I come home and rave or rant about whatever I’ve watched. 😂
I have a minimal contact with cinema for years ( living in the country side or a place without any mainstream cinema around), missing my student years but I tend to buy dvds of indie or classic movies although they tend to be expensive. I grew up on channel 2 of two national TV stations which were and still are having late movie nights twice per week with old classics or any world cinema movies from film festivals, profiting from subtitles made for the festival. The advantage of little country with many film festivals (full length movies, short or middle length films, documentary or animation movies, nature based movies, etc.) is that once the festivals are over the national television has the rights to screen them once.
ooh thanks for cc-ing me @smaltwalt! This is perfect. I’m yet to catch up ep 15, and will probably do so after ep16 is out. But they’ve done a nice job with the meta referencing. I’ve enjoyed it.
One thing though – I’d have liked an ET reference in every episode – they should have had a finger touch between any two characters every time. 😀

There’s a lot of inside gags/parodies of films (international and korean cinema) in Run On that you won’t get if you haven’t watched those films yet.
