Ryu Seung-ryong ushers Yang Se-jong out to sea in Low Life

It’s finders keepers with Disney+’s upcoming crime-mystery Low Life, in which an uncle-nephew pair race to retrieve valuable relics from the sea floor before anyone else can beat them to the prize. Based on a webtoon, the drama adaptation will run for eleven episodes.
Ryu Seung-ryong (Chicken Nugget) takes center stage as the opportunistic Oh Gwan-seok, who minces neither words nor methods when it comes to making money. Approaching Lee Dong-hwi (Chief Inspector 1958) as the senior officer Shim Hong-ki, Gwan-seok extends a lucrative offer. He’s come to fish out lost treasure from the sea.
As it turns out, crates of exquisite pottery have recently been hauled up in fishing nets, and an appraiser clocks them as artifacts from the Yuan Dynasty. That immediately sets off dollar bills in everyone’s eyes, and the shrewd Yang Jung-sook — played by Im Soo-jung (Melancholia) — doesn’t hesitate to latch on. “This will turn a profit, right?” she asks, and her hopes aren’t dashed in the slightest. The relics are apparently worth billions. With that, Jung-sook begins to stake investments on the treasure, anticipating a huge payout.
With so many hyenas circling the spoils, Gwan-seok realizes he needs to take any advantage he can get. Approaching the totally legitimate antiques dealer (read: scammer) Professor Kim, played by Kim Eui-sung (The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call), Gwan-seok offers to join hands and split the prize. Marveling at Gwan-seok’s business acumen, Professor Kim shakes on it — but how long will this tenuous treaty last?
Already, it seems there are far too many variables that could go awry. Gwan-seok’s nephew Oh Hee-dong — played by Yang Se-jong (Doona!) — gets recruited into the treasure hunt by uncle dearest, but he doesn’t seem particularly pleased about the arrangement. On the surface, there’s some semblance of a diver’s code — the promise not to harm one another while out at sea. But Im Jin-chul, played by Kim Sung-oh (Lies Hidden in My Garden), is skeptical: “On a boat, I don’t trust anyone.”
Perhaps there’s prudence in that wariness, because the scent of betrayal soon permeates the air. Already, Jung-sook is scheming to shake up the playing field — as she proclaims, if you’re going to steal, you have to strike hard and fast. “You think law enforcement is a joke, don’t you?” taunts Hong-ki from outside a detention cell. As for Hee-dong, he notes that his uncle has changed – and a lot, at that.
As the various players hone in on the jackpot, danger begins creeping up on them as well. After all, one shove in the back, and it’s all over. To the reminder that he ought to do the calculations properly since lives are on the line, Gwan-seok easily replies, “Of course.” But does he mean what he says? Boats crash in a fiery explosion, and someone attempts to cut a diver’s oxygen tube. Amidst all the gravedigging to scavenge for treasure, will they wind up digging their own graves?
Helmed by PD Kang Yoon-sung (Big Bet) on both the directing and writing fronts, with Ahn Seung-hwan collaborating on scripts, Low Life is scheduled to make its first dive on July 16.

Dumb Disney+ again. I will be watching this only if Hulu picks it up too.
