News bites: July 1, 2025
by tccolb
- The first posters have dropped for SBS’s The Winning Try (previously Try – We Become Miracles), joining sports director Yoon Kye-sang (The Frog) in the locker room for some serious huddles as well as some fun. Along with coach Im Se-mi (My Dearest Nemesis) and student athlete Kim Yo-han (School 2021), the underdog journey from last to first at the next rugby nationals will be kicking off on weekends, starting July 25. [SBS]
- Also coming out with their first poster, KBS’s next weekender Our Golden Days (formerly Splendid Days) is promising us sunny moments with Jung Il-woo (Good Job) and Jung In-sun (DNA Lover). But I do expect we’ll have to earn those golden days by facing storms and clouds as well. With PD Kim Hyung-seok (Cheat on Me If You Can) directing and scripts penned by So Hyun-kyung (Twenty Again), the family drama will be premiering on August 9 next month. [KBS]
- Speaking of KBS, weekends will soon be extra busy as it’s now been confirmed that their weekday primetime dramas will be moving to a Saturday-Sunday slot. Beginning with the action-hero series Twelve this coming August – starring Ma Dong-seok (Police Unit 38, The Roundup: Punishment), Park Hyung-shik (Buried Hearts) – the crime-thriller Eun-soo’s Good Day is slated to follow in September – starring Lee Young-ae (Maestra – Strings of Truth), Kim Young-kwang (The Haunted Palace), Park Yong-woo (Hunter with a Scalpel). [10 Asia]
- In the meantime, ENA continues promos for The Defects with a bundle of new stills, showcasing our darkly connected leads: Yeom Jung-ah (No Way Out – The Roulette), Won Jin-ah (Unicorn), Choi Young-joon (The Trunk), and Dex(Tarot). Launching this month on July 21, the noir revenge story will be taking over the Monday-Tuesday slot, once Salon de Holmes concludes its run. [Sports Donga (1), (2)]
- On JTBC, romance is blossoming in spite of the hurdles between Lee Dong-wook (The Divorce Insurance) and Lee Sung-kyung (Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 3) in the latest stills for The Nice Guy. Broadcasting in a new Friday slot, the series will be coming to our screens on July 18, with production led by filmmaker Song Hae-sung (Boomerang Family, Maundy Thursday) and PD Park Hong-soo (Human Disqualification), in addition to writers, Kim Woon-kyung (Yoo-na’s Street) and Kim Hyo-seok (Yadang: The Snitch). [JTBC]
- KBS is also gearing up for My Girlfriend Is a Tough Guy, ramping up promos with new posters, while also reviving the tradition of holding prayer ceremonies to wish for the drama’s good fortune. Headlined by Yoon San-ha (Romance in the House), Arin (S Line), Yoo Jung-hoo (Who Is She), and Chuu (Dating Class), the fantasy rom-com and webtoon adaptation is set to premiere on July 23. 1. I don’t buy any of these lean pretty boys as rugby players, but Yoon Kye-sang as a mentor-type sounds fun as hell.
2. Splendid Days was the better title and they should’ve kept it.
3. These people are determined to make my weekends even more chaotic than normal 😒. Because that’s one crazy stacked lineup of actors I wouldn’t wanna miss.
4. Yeom Jung-ah looks genuinely terrifying in all the promos I’ve seen. I’m checking out the premiere just for her.
5. Yeeeah, nope. Still don’t buy them as a couple. Yes I’m aware that their age-gap isn’t that steep. And yes, I know that LDW has paired up with actresses around this age range before (and probably younger lbr) - I’m not trying to start ~discourse~ here. But I cannot shake the image that LSK feels like she should be, idk, maybe LDW’s feisty younger cousin or something. As long as that something isn’t his girlfriend.
6. I still have no idea what the hell the plot of this show is supposed to be. I could list the tropes and idols on display as a checklist, but what’s the plot???

Re 1. Same friend, same.
Re 5. I don't mind them together, but I think they shouldn't make them the same age. She should play younger. The age gap is similar to My sweet mobster and I really enjoyed that, however I understand.

Yeah, the gap is similar in my sweet mobster and I think what didnt make it thah awkward is that Minnie unnie was younger. Here they wanna make the FL the same age and naah... Idk if it was because I didnt know Uhm tae goo's age beforehand but I cant with LDW's drama age gap. It reminds me of how I felt when Park Hae Soo was paired with Krystal in Prison Playbook... she legit looked like his niece.

Yeah, I think one of the reasons why this is throwing me off is that LSK’s character is specifically listed as LDW’s character’s ‘first love’, which is weird to me. My Sweet Mobster didn’t ping my radar because they simply depicted the age onscreen. Ig it’s more the framing of LSK/LDW as same or similar-aged peers giving me the ick; she’s visibly much younger than him and no amount of tv magic is fixing that.
They should’ve embraced the age difference and ditched the ‘first love’ narrative. It’s anathema to drama logic, but it is in fact possible for people to love more than the one person they saw one time back in elementary school.

Your point about Rugby players is spot on.
SPLENDID DAYS was indeed a better title. Maybe it is only the English language title that was changed?
Age gaps are OK up to a point but sometimes Kdramas want to stretch our credulity. Yes, people can point to real life exceptions but that is the point: Those are exceptional cases unique to those specific individuals.

Hmm, so far I see one person who looks like he might actually have ever played rugby - but maybe that’s why they are underdogs?
I don’t understand why they need to jam pack weekends like this! I’m going to have to pay special attention to which recaps come out first so that I know which shows to watch first. Some of them are definitely not getting watched until the week if they keep this up.
I was ready to defend Jung Il-woo’s short hair in a previous photo, but after seeing that poster, I take it all back. One part of the 90s I was hoping would never return has reared its ugly head once again.
Excited for the darkness that is The Defects and hoping it’s available!

1) The one issue I have with this is all the boys are so small and skinny. Rugby players are large men, not as big as American football players, but still fairly large men. These boys will be eaten for lunch by any passable team. However, I like Im Se Mi, so will try for her.
3. Excited for both
4. This looks interesting.
5. I hope this is good!!

1 - Oh good, they actually picked a decent English title. I'll credit Netflix with that little bit of sanity. Looking forward to this! I've been wanting to see Yoon Kye Sang again since The Day of the Kidnapping.

I hope folks will be a little generous and understanding re the physiques of the high school young men rugby players in:
No. 1. SBS’s THE WINNING TRY/TRY:WE BECOME MIRACLES. These are Korean boys after all so they probably will be slimmer and less husky than let’s say the average American teenage boy. In high school I am presuming rugby players haven’t ‘chunked’ out yet like the average college/professional rugby player.
Anyway, my concern right now as a US viewer is availability. I am experiencing slight availability angst. Perhaps SBS will do the right thing and make TRY available to Kocowa/Viki.
SBS (according to a response I got from Brave browser’s AI) has made an agreement with Netflix and the AI response included this:
“ Additionally, Netflix has inked a new deal with SBS, under which new weekly K-dramas from SBS will begin streaming on Netflix in the second half of 2025.”. We are in the second half of 2025 so perhaps TRY will soon be on Netflix’s “Coming Soon” list. Fingers crossed.

O/T. Reminder. While searching Netflix US today for TRY (no hit) I was reminded that Kim Nam-gil’s crime drama TRIGGER (10 eps.) is coming to Netflix US on July 25.
This will be my first Kim Nam-gil drama since his great SBS drama in 2022 THROUGH THE DARKNESS (Viki US).
TTD finished with the door open for a sequel or TTD 2. I would love to see KNG reprise his role.

Yes that would be good. He is one actor I will watch almost anything in providing its not too scary/gory but even then I watch with eyes half covered! He is so very good.

Regarding Try maybe coming to Netflix: From your mouth to God's ears (or at least the executives responsible).

Is it really such a good idea to crowd the weekends? My short answer is no.
Also, OUR GOLDEN DAYS is way too similar as a title to MY GOLDEN LIFE.

The Winning Try and My Girlfriend Is a Tough Guy look like long listers for the watchlist. The body swap drama sounds really funny. I am looking forward to seeing if it plays out as well as it does in my head. I will join you in that prayer ceremony @tccolb 😂
I want to see if her female form has the real man’s personality living in it and if they will turn up at some point too. With a sibling and parents in the mix I wonder if there will be a Miss Night and Day situation if she is still living at home when the change occurs and she walks into the shared spaces that morning or if they will be visiting or calling and wondering why she is not responding.
