Weekly Squee #15

Welcome to your weekly chat space for all things that bring out the squee. With plenty of spaces to vent and share about dramas — good, bad, or ugly — this thread is dedicated to that uniquely positive punch of excitement brought on by unexpected cameos, the Episode-8 first kiss, and all other too-close encounters by an OTP.

Consider it a cozy place to sit back, take a breather, and open up about the latest drama moment that sent you into a foot-stomping, mouth-covering fit of squeals.

And if you’re squeeing about non-drama-related stuff, hey, throw it in there. We could all use a happy story and rush of feels to keep us smirking throughout the day.

So, what are you squeeing about this week?

Beware of spoilers below!

KPop Demon Hunters [Netflix]

S P O I L E R S

The film was cute, and the songs were catchy. My favorites were "What It Sounds Like" for HUNTR/X and "Your Idol" for Saja Boys (Baby's rapping, squee), as well as the Gwi-Ma song Jinu strummed on his bipa in hell. I love the play on words with Saja Boys' name for both lion (saja) and Grim Reaper (jeoseung-saja). The jokes were all meta not only for K-pop fans but also for fans of Ahn Hyo-seop. I squeed when they played "Love, Maybe" by MeloMance from Business Proposal OST during Jinu's entrance.

I wanted more romance between Rumi and Jinu. The lyrics of "Free" were practically a confession, so when he took her hand, was that not the start of their relationship? Squee at Jinu wearing their bracelet onstage! I wish he had given it back to her at the end and changed what the bracelet seller said, "Don't find yourself a better boy." Rumi's a half-demon, so she would just be following her mother's footsteps by falling in love with a demon.

I LOVE THE GIANT BLUE TIGER DERPY SM!! The way he knocked over the flowerpot and tried to paw it back up, ROFL! Then being fixated on Rumi's knocked over trash bin, LOL! Jinu's tiger and bird even sleep at her house like she's watching his pets. How domestic, SQUEE!!

The other members of either group weren't fleshed out, but this was just supposed to be superficial and fun. Although instead of shipping Rujinu, it would've been a more realistic take on K-pop fandom for fans to ship say, Rumira or Jinabby.

I have just finished the movie. I liked it more than I thought!
The animation is good, but the best part are the songs (I loved many) and choreos.

The choreographies were very creative like the Saja Boys' infectious "Soda Pop" shoulder bounce and my favorite choreo "Your Idol" with the grim reaper concept.

Yes, do watch to support Kevin! If you've listened to U-KISS, you can totally recognize his voice in the movie!

It’s already been said in the recap, but when she told her Tiger Dream, I just wanted to Eat. Her. Up. And I’m not even someone who likes aegyo.

Also, I may soon be knocking on the doors of the Jinyoung Fan Club. I haven’t seen much by him (reccos?) but I need to correct that stat.

Have you seen Yumi's Cells? Because there is a Park Jin-young (Yoo Babi) Fan Club!

I recommend Yumi's Cells first, then The Devil Judge, which I liked his romance in, but it wasn't super popular, then He Is Psychometric, which is still one of my favorite dramas.

I really liked The Witch, and not just for JinYoung. It was a bit slow at times but had so many amazing scenes. The art direction and filming was beautifully done. I felt the end/last episode was a bit rushed and would have benefited from another episode, but i was happy with how it ended. It did have mixed reviews from Beanies, but I think that those that loved it really loved it, and i would be one of those! I highly recommend it.

I highly recommend The Devil Judge (genre: legal vigilante drama set in a dystopic South Korea amidst civil unrest).

Besides the fact that this drama is excellent all-round (I have re-watched fav scenes like multiple times) you will get to see one of the best depictions of unconscious homoerotic undertones ever in a k-drama.

No spoilers, but once you understood the context, it approaches Greek proportions of tragic pathos and obsession. Unforgettable.

Ok, my SQUEE is absolutely Ji Sung in Devil Judge.
He is a walking force field all by himself; and sex on legs

6

Required fields are marked *

Ji Sung is always a walking force field by himself, but I have to say that it was fascinating to watch Jinyoung being simply entranced by him, like he cannot pull his eyes away from him, like he cannot hold himself from being drawn to him like a magnet! I can never be sure how much of it was acting and how much of it was real him being hypnotized by Ji Sung's magic!

6

reply

Required fields are marked *

I won't be surprised if it is the latter.

The dangerously irresistible charm is the "devilish" pull of the character Ji Sung plays, even as JS once admitted in an interview this role was one of the most challenging roles for him ever to interpret.

Jin-Young just reminds me of Tripitaka (he should so play that role!) -- the utterly pure and innocent holy man whose flesh every demon lusts after.

3

Their first greeting! Both are of the same hight. That way they can look in each others eyes, unflinching, battling, trusting, manipulating, whatever. One of my favorite top 5 dramas.

4

@coninadisc
YES!
Koreans have an incredible knack of using height to deliver different emotions in a way that I have seen no other nation media do.

Same height electricity in exactly the same scenario you mentioned.

Same height in intense love and angst like the Jealousy Incarnate couple.

The way Ryu Duk Hwan is acutely aware of being shorter than Lee Ellya every second of Miss Hammurabi, but never even for one moment in Nobody Knows or in Special Labour Inspector Jo. Yes, he is an amazing actor who can show so much emotions with the smallest movement, but using his height in only one of the 3 great works to give so much information about him and his feelings is so Korean drama.

The way Kim Young Kwang is never threatening/imposing despite his height neither in Lookout nor in Call it Love. But he is terrifyingly towering in villain roles.

The way Moon Sang Min is at least 8 cms taller than Yoon Park, but you never doubt which one is the experienced hyung even when they are walking side by side.

(I dislike the trend of pairing extremely tall male leads with extremely petite female leads, so I'm leaving that category out of this.)

7

Oh no, dystopia isn't usually my thing. 🫣 But Ji Sung always is! LOL. I'll think about it.

(I love how JS ends up being the center of the convo. Ha!)

My squee this week is an episode from MBC's "Single Life" from about a year ago that floated into my YouTube feed the other day. It's about 15 minutes (with English subs) of Park Jin Young visiting Lee Jungho at his apartment after he returns from military duty. Apparently they're good friends (who knew?!)

You'll laugh (a lot), you'll gasp (you'll know when you get to that part), and you'll most definitely squee. Their personalities are on full display, lol. So cute and funny.

If you missed this in the last year (or even if you didn't, haha!), this is a must watch if you're a fan of either or both! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hkj8khZrWhI&t=10s&ab_channel=MBCWORLD

Yeah, it reminded me of the Witch in some ways, but I liked it so much more. Gender switch maybe? Or that a supernatural element had already been introduced so this strange supersition wasn't coming out of nowhere?

I think it was really what the grandmother said after she was dead, though we didn't know it at the time. It's people who kill people. It's people who spread the negativity and make people feel alone. Weeper, and I didn't expect it to be. Really looking forward to the next episode.

The conversation with the grandmother was already heartbreaking - and then we get hit with the reveal of her death. Poor Gyeon-woo. He's lost so much at such a young age. I really hope Seong-ah and the new archery coach keeps him from despairing further.

2

Rewatching She Would Never Know. The douchebag boyfriend from Kim Sam Soon is a weirdly cute, and nice!, chaebol grandbaby here. His romance with the lovely eldest sister is the part I most look forward to in this drama. I keep thinking she could totally pass as Ji Chang Wook's sister.

I for some reason decided I needed to rewatch a few episodes of The Lonely Shining Goblin. (Why does everyone have a different name for this drama?) The internet is what is making me squee, because someone posted an English translation of the poem that Gong Yoo reads at the end of episode 4, "The Physics of Love." I'm slowly watching OATH along with a bunch of other rewatches this week while visiting family; and mourning the very last chapters of GRANDMASTER OF DEMONIC CULTIVATION vol. 5.

Other rewatches: MINGLAN (Feng Shao Feng that rascal), LOVE LIKE THE GALAXY (better second time round) and YOU ARE MY GLORY (casting perfection with great cinematography).

New watches: YONG JIU GROCERY STORE and MY TREASURE. Roy Chiu is film magic; what a gifted actor. When I return to home base, I'll start a rewatch to finish ZANG HAI.

There are so many good options available now with streaming, what a great era for drama watching.

I should than you as well for the reminder that it exists— I’ve found it on YT and have saved the playlist for future listening 😅
I’ve worked my butt of to pull away from the drama—and almost everyone /everything affiliated— because I found myself going very deep into the rabbit hole in an unhealthy way at some point 🥹 But the anniversary pulls me back in ever so slightly every year, because this drama is just so special to me 🥰🥰

Oh interesting! I did try my local library audio service and also Audible without any luck whatsoever which honestly surprised me. But I'm old enough to remember more than one great read that took a while to surface as audio. Eventually, Audible will pick it up if they want their audience to expand. They aren't stupid. Pricey, but not stupid.

Squee Moment #2 this week:

There seems to be no stopping in the reach and influence of Legend of Zang Hai any time soon! It continues to garner buzz online, overseas (even Taiwan), and even a domestic prestigious award show seems to have uses the drama for clout—which, I am still undecided about whether or not I like that it happened, because I don’t like people and think using other people and things for clout usually 🤔 Other minor networks in China have begun—or will soon begin— airing the drama on their own platforms, so I don’t see any slowing down of this momentum any time soon! There have even been questions about another season 😊

Great job to the cast, directors, and the production crew altogether 🥰😍😘♥️ They all deserve it! As this truly is a quality drama— from beginning to end in writing, in acting, in production quality, in ALL of the details. It seems as if some of the cast— the not-a-traffic-star cast and some of the veteran cast— are all still in humble disbelief about all of the love, ongoing attention, and buzz that this drama has been receiving, as many of the interviews I’ve seen of the cast continually show their gratefulness and their genuine surprise of the drama’s buzz and how it’s basically exploded (even being labeled as the network’s— YOUKU— most explosive and popular drama in recent years) 😊 It’s no wonder the network took the opportunity to announce their next project with Xiao Zhan is already in the works, and the fact that they even have a “next project” with him

This week, I've been squeeing so hard over the husband of the fourth daughter in Cdrama PERFECT MATCH, undoubtedly the best of them, and played to absolute perfection by Liang Yong Qi. I knew I was right to persist on his account when the eldest daughter marriage started to alternately vex and bore me. There is so much to say concerning all the arcs of that show, but on the fourth daughter, I have nothing particularly negative to say about it. I did sigh a lot when it became apparent they used the amnesia trope but they did it so delicately and with such sweet results I cannot be bothered. Instead, that face he made when he was forced to eat something bitter is the single cutest thing I've seen these couple of months and something I lament I cannot rave about during december on the fanwall.

The Chinese series Reborn, which I'm currently watching on Viki (I've watched 12 of 23 episodes), hasn't exactly been cheerful or squee-worthy so far. It's a sad, slow-moving series with a tough undertone. But in the last two episodes I've watched (on Viki), the main couple begins to share some very tender and endearing moments, and they have wonderful chemistry. So I'm finally watching them with a smile. They are very cute together, innocently planning their future.

I only finally started watching yesterday and binged the first 4 episodes - so good. THIS is what I need now!

I have dropped both Good Boy and Oh My Ghost Clients and just want a light and happy show to uplift my mood and DUKE is it.

The last line of FL when she runs to the wedding selection seals it for me: "I will devote the remainder of Cha Sun Chaek's life to this man. I will bet my life on him." It is her character's turning point to embrace both *fate* & agency after witnessing the devotion and sacrifice of ML to save and nurse her during the plague ❤❤❤
