Weekly Squee #14

Welcome to your weekly chat space for all things that bring out the squee. With plenty of spaces to vent and share about dramas — good, bad, or ugly — this thread is dedicated to that uniquely positive punch of excitement brought on by unexpected cameos, the Episode-8 first kiss, and all other too-close encounters by an OTP.

Consider it a cozy place to sit back, take a breather, and open up about the latest drama moment that sent you into a foot-stomping, mouth-covering fit of squeals.

And if you’re squeeing about non-drama-related stuff, hey, throw it in there. We could all use a happy story and rush of feels to keep us smirking throughout the day.

So, what are you squeeing about this week?

Beware of spoilers below!

These days I'm watching the classic sageuks The Slave Hunters for the first time (15 out of 24).
Yesterday I watched a scene that has to be one of the swooniest I've found lately. And the characters weren't even an official couple (at that moment). Context: Eun Nyeon, the FL, has been on the run for weeks with Song Tae Ha, a wanted slave. Finally, in a cave in Jeju, when she can't take it anymore, she tells him to go alone, because she doesn't want to delay him any longer or be a burden on his escape. And he, as always, looking so sweetly, after some seconds of silence, reaches out his hand and says: "I have to ask for your permission to hold your hand, because we're going to have to run a long way." So leaving without her is not an option for him. And of course, she holds his hand because she is already smitten.

Ottoke!! What a good man he is! I love this character. He is so respectful, honest and courageous!

Totally!!
It's an addictive feeling, but I often don't feel it if I don't like the couple(s) enough.
It was easier with old k-dramas.

I agree that it seems more common in older k-dramas. I wonder why that is? Was it the longer format where the story wasn't so rushed? I also agree that you have to like the couple to feel the squee!

I don't know why either.
Maybe the screenwriters were experts on this kind of scenes and at creating characters we cared about.

4

I agree! It feels too choreographed in alot of the current dramas. Ends up feeling more cringe than swoony.

Song Tae Ha is the perfect Confucian gentleman!

I like the scene in Episode 5 when Seol Hwa plays the haegeum and bonds with the slave hunting crew, while at the same time Song Tae Ha and Eonnyeon bond over roasted snake. Two beautiful scenes united by beautiful music.

I also liked that scene! There are several moments which are shown in parallel.
Even more now (I'm on episode 17) when all the characters are separated.

the other swoony sageuk is The Princess' Man with Moon Chae Young and Park Shi Hoo (before his embarrassing scandal). the music and pace is epic... i binged it in one weekend - it is 28 episodes - and my daughter would look at my husband and say "she hasn't moved all weekend..."
: D

the ensemble characters have such great stories also!

I should really get back to Chuno. I started watching it a while ago but life got in the way and then live watching is much easier than binge watching. But like you I was totally sucked into that universe and loved the characters. It is a pity that these days even the historical genre is so low stakes dwspite it being one of the genre where you can play around with grandiosuty and high stakes. I don't know what went wrong but kdramas are definitely not the same. Chuno was a good reminder that they used to be very addicitive.

I'd say Chuno is very bingeable (the same we were saying about Dear Hongrang) because each episode ends in a cliffhanger.
I am watching it much faster than I thought.

In general, old k-dramas were very addictive.

Thanks to this comment I started watching The Slave Hunters (just finished ep 2), thanks. FYI, I looked it up in Wikipedia for the synopsis, and I quote "An adequate display of muscular brawn..."
That's one way of putting it!

I finally completed Dear Hongrang.
Verdict: The story is not cohesive. But it is fun. I feel like the writer tried to tie things up nicely and the reveals were top. I do wish different choices were made. Inasmuch as the reveal of what happened to real Hongrang was, I was already thinking Sim was responsible for it and was the plotter all along, which was why he knew all the Hongrangs that came were frauds. I feel like they lost some climatic arc in there, but I do not disagree with the choice the writer made in this regards.

If one watches blindly, it is easy to get lost here. But one more thing I can say is this is a bingeable watch. I found myself pressing the next episode when I got to the episode 5-6 mark. Every other drama I was watching took a backseat for this particular drama.

Final verdict: I earned my bean without doing it grudgingly. It was very willing, I must say. Nevertheless, it doesn't come into the tier of great dramas. It does come into the tier of dramas with excellent sword choreography. I lurved it.

Joseon Gothic horror with a side of melodrama and romance. Not everything in the plot made sense, but the emotional scenes were very moving. I have been listening to the OST non stop for the past couple of days.

Joseon Gothic Horror with a side of melodrama and romance is a perfect description. I guess you could throw "psychological" and "thriller" in there somewhere, too. It's really the combination of all those different genres that makes it so bingeable.

As long as the emotional scenes isn't always equating to romance parts, I would say this drama's emotional scenes were moving. But if it is, I'd rather state that this drama knew its way around driving tension within its story. It kept me glued to the screens and was the major reason I couldn't drop it for another as it raised up the stakes with the stories progression.

Yes, I would say it is a deeply and intensely emotional & family drama, not so much a romantic one.

I once read a deeply moving review of Dear Hong Rang - where the reviewer saw herself in each of the three tragic protagonists ( Hong Rang, Jae-Yi, Mu-Jin) and their doomed dynamics. It gave me a whole new appreciation of the drama after.

I have cut and pasted the relevant review portion here by Bra Burning Chick on MDL:

I didn’t expect Dear Hongrang to get under my skin the way it did. At first, it felt like too much, and suddenly, I was in it. Heart clenched, eyes stinging, trying not to see myself in people I didn’t want to relate to.

What hit me the hardest was the quiet collapse between Jae-i, Hongrang, and Mu-jin. It wasn’t loud or clean, but was the kind of heartbreak that just sits in the room with you.

Jae-i reminded me of what it’s like to be strong only because you have no choice. The way she holds herself - stiff, careful, almost too proud to admit she’s tired - I’ve seen that posture in people I love. I’ve worn it. And when she starts to let someone in, when her shoulders drop just a little, when her voice softens, I felt this stupid lump in my throat. Because I know how hard that is. To trust again after everything’s been taken from you.

Hongrang… god. He doesn’t even have to say much. He walks like someone who doesn’t expect to be missed. There’s this heaviness to him that made me uncomfortable at times, like watching someone who doesn’t believe they’re real anymore. But when he’s with Jae-i, when they just look at each other, it’s like the world pauses. It made me think of all the people I’ve tried to reach who were already halfway gone. People I wanted to save. People who maybe didn’t want to be saved.

And Mu-jin. I don’t think I was ready for Mu-jin. His pain is so quiet, it’s easy to miss, until you realize it’s everywhere. I saw a part of myself in him that I don’t like talking about. That feeling of being overlooked. Of loving someone who’s already looking past you. He doesn’t rage; he just aches. And I know that feeling too well. That desperate, silent kind of love that you pretend is enough, even when it’s killing you.

The show is gorgeous, sure - the forests, the candlelight, the jewelry, all of it. But that’s not what stayed with me. What stayed was the silence between scenes. The long stares. The unsaid things. The kind of tension that feels exactly like grief: stretched out, dull at first, then suddenly overwhelming.

Dear Hongrang wasn't trying to shock. It was trying to sit with me. Like grief does. Like guilt does. Like love does when it turns into something heavier. It’s not a drama about getting revenge or solving a mystery. It’s about what happens when the person you were dies, and you’re still here, expected to keep living anyway.

Every character in this show is holding on to something already gone. And maybe that’s why it wrecked me. Because I’ve done that. I’m probably still doing that. And the show doesn’t tell you it’ll get better. It just tells you to look at it. To let the ache exist. To stop pretending you can fix it by going back.

OK, so this is not really a squee... or  maybe it's a "reverse squee".
I'm watching Unwritten Seoul (and loving it) on Netflix. It is soooo frustrating that when the songs play, the subs on the screen are shown in English when they are sung in English, but when the song is sung in Korean the sub says "singing in Korean" instead of translating the lyrics to English! Now, how is that helpful???
So, I guess my squee is:  I love that Viki translates the Korean lyrics to English!

I miss the lyrics on Netflix and Kocowa.

Required fields are marked *

There's something I don't like about Viki and Kocowa, though: the episodes start directly without the intro credits. Not always, but very often.
I don't know why they do that.
Sometimes I even thought there weren't intros for some dramas but by chance I found them on YouTube (Undercover High School, for instance).

Netflix always shows the intros.

4

reply

Required fields are marked *

OH!!! YES!! I'm so glad you mentioned this. It is a huge gripe with me.
I like to at least be able to choose to watch the intro or not. It makes me feel like I haven't gotten the full feel of the drama without seeing it. I always watch for the first and last episodes, and if i love the intro (like Weak Hero class) I will watch it every time.
They also don't show the previews many times, and in some dramas, I've realized they don't show the epilogue. I've discovered this after reading the DB recaps and wondered why I didn't see the epilogue.
So, positives and negatives about each platform, I suppose. I'll try to be thankful that I can watch most dramas that I want to.

- Our Unwritten Seoul: The confession! Actually, this is the first time, the present day stuff made me squee (doesn't mean I didn't like it before, I did). It was a pretty simple confession, and it just felt kinda perfect.

Other stuff:
- A Calm Sea and Beautiful Days with You/ Nami Uraraka ni, Meoto Biyori (jdrama, up to episode 7): As if the leads weren't adorable enough on their own, the drama has now pulled out it's secret weapon: a secondary romance. It's funny, because the second leads are essentially kinda the opposite as the leads, which makes for a fun and interesting dynamic, both with the leads, and with each other. They have this playful dynamic with each other that is an absolute joy to watch, and I can't wait to see more of it. Also, for those interested: this drama is coming to Viki on June 27th. Don't miss out on this beautiful drama!

- Tokyo Holiday (jdrama, up to episode 11). At this point it's certain the finale will end with me in tears, but whether those will be happy or sad tears remains to be seen. The preview does look lovely, and I'm happy our leads will actually spend time together (you know, after they've literally had like one scene together in the last 5 episodes). Good things come to those who wait, or at least I hope so.

RE: Legend of Zang Hai

*SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE*

Whew! Okay, now that we've gotten that out of the way, where do I start?????
I stand by what I said before and I will continue to say it--and will probably say it until the end (which is near 🥺):

SO. SO. SO. SO GOOD!! From beginning to end!!! Some things as they happen, you're going to think, "Hmmm this thing or this person is sus", but never have I ever thought, "Wow, that was convenient" and then *cue eye roll*
The plot keeps moving along, and even though some parts of it is repetitve-- like the mention of revenge-- it doesn't fall flat and I'm not tired of any of it. It actually works to emphasize the human side of our hero and to remind us that he does have a heart, he does have a conscience, and knows not to harm those not involved.
The acting continues to be top notch--by the veteran cast, of course, but also by the young(er) cast as well-- and all of the details continue to be *chef's kiss* The more I watch, the more I applaud the production value, especially the props department. This drama truly makes me wonder if there were really such things and such devices in those time (Ancient China), but then I'm reminded again that we had the historically renown strategist, statesman, and inventor, Zhuge Liang (courtesy name: Kong Ming), who invented the "Kong Ming Puzzle".

At the time of this post, I'm actually nearing the end--only about 3-4 episodes left!!-- and I can't wait to see what is to come and how everything will unfold and come to an end-- at the same time, I don't want it to end!!! *clutches heart*

This week I completed the 36 episode iQIYI drama THE LOST NATIONAL TREASURE. I really took the plunge because of young ML Bai Yu Fan who was so good in 2023 in the Tencent historical/mystery RIPE TOWN (12 eps.) (Viki US).

SLIGHT ENDING SPOILER:The drama takes place from around 2000 to 2012/13 and contrasts the work of archaeologists and cultural preservation with the challenges of criminal individuals and groups raiding tombs. So it is one part educational and one part police procedural. I really enjoyed it and it had a wonderful cast. There is a basic overall arc beginning with a tomb being discovered and looted and many years later the perpetrators being brought to justice.
