Weekly Squee #13

Welcome to your weekly chat space for all things that bring out the squee. With plenty of spaces to vent and share about dramas — good, bad, or ugly — this thread is dedicated to that uniquely positive punch of excitement brought on by unexpected cameos, the Episode-8 first kiss, and all other too-close encounters by an OTP.

Consider it a cozy place to sit back, take a breather, and open up about the latest drama moment that sent you into a foot-stomping, mouth-covering fit of squeals.

And if you’re squeeing about non-drama-related stuff, hey, throw it in there. We could all use a happy story and rush of feels to keep us smirking throughout the day.

So, what are you squeeing about this week?

Beware of spoilers below!

My squee this week was for the MLs in Our Unwritten Seoul. Both actors really delivered on their characters.

***SPOILERS***

Squee #1: The moment that Mi Ji put her head on Ho Soo's back when he was piggybacking her at the end of ep 6. His smile was 🫠

Squee #2: When Se Jin told Mi Rae that he liked the rumors about them. The moment was so charged. How will Mi Rae respond?!

Looking forward to this week's eps!! 😍

Squee #1: I met a deer on my morning run!
Squee #2: RM, V, Jung Kook and Jimin are finally free again!
No squee: Turns out, the guy who made a lovely song about suicidal depression hated the military about as much as ARMY thought he did.

The childhood flashbacks in Our Unwritten Seoul, especially the scenes at the top of the mountain. Loved every minute of that. I didn't really squee with the present day stuff, even if I do really like them.

Other stuff:
- Ripe for the Picking (jdrama, blame Netflix for this horrendous title). About a 32-year old woman who is frustrated by her lack of sexual experience, who ends up connecting with a shy copy repairman. The romance between these two is quite frankly some of the sweetest, most gentle, I've seen in a long time. It just feels so real too, it's often awkward, but also often effortlessly funny. Also, their hugs are the sweetest, I'm not even kidding when I say they nearly made me cry. There's just something so beautiful about watching shy people fall in love (and I need more of that).

It’s not exactly a squee but more of an “am I hallucinating right now?” I can report that the LOCAL noon news in my small US-midwestern city just told me, with pictures, that Jimin and Jong Kook of BTS have left the army but that Suga is still serving and will delay the group’s return to performing. I wonder what the local newscasters thought as they had to pronounce the names 😂 This story took precedence over news of local massive tornado cleanup, the story that followed. Korea, I believe your dreams of global domination are now complete 🙆🏼

Continuing my really exciting journey through Legend of Zang Hai 🥰😘

I'm at the point wherein I've lost count of which episode I am at specifically, because all I'm caring about and really got my focus on is the happenings of each of the episodes as they take place. However, I do remember one specific moment/scene in Ep. 11 that was just * chef's kiss * And I remember it specifically being from Ep. 11 because I was gushing about it to someone else before this post lol

Episode 11 THAT BATH HOUSE SCENE * cue incoherent squeeing *
The intensity-- yet quiet storm beginning to stir-- the nuances, the veiled words and meanings, the emotional acting between the 2 actors.... I mean, that major scene in Ep. 7 already gripped me and hooked me in, but this bath house scene in Ep. 11 has gotten me ON. THE FREAKING FLOOR 🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠 And that's just the half of it-- the acting in the scene-- I haven't even mentioned the visuals of that scene which are also a visual treat 😍😍 IYKYK

😏😏😏 And having it be a feast for the thirsty eyes is just a bonus 👀

At the same time, for this particular one, there had to be a little bit of effort and creative thinking involved from the directors, since I’m sure Xiao Zhan—being his shy and humble self— probably had a say in how things went and how it was filmed so as little as possible could be seen thirsted over by fans 🤣😅 But this is one of the many things I appreciate about him:

He knows that sex sells, but he doesn’t purposely choose to take advantage of it nor purposely depend on it to make himself stand out

In dramas there's always a plot - and THE plot))) Greatest shows find a nice balance between both, because why choosing only one?

I know the feeling - my cdrama guy point blank said filming his own bathing scenes was a huge stress and he doesn't want to repeat the experience anytime soon hope it didn't mean "never again", that'd be such a loss. Anyway, stay clean and fresh, boys^^

Hooray! I’m currently abroad (squeee!), and as it turns out, the regional offerings on Viki are different here (wheeeee!), which finally gave me the chance to watch MISSION POSSIBLE (yaaaaaay!)! Albeit only a movie-length intermezzo, I enjoyed watching 🔥Kim Young-kwang🔥 (wooohooo!) in a lead role, especially after his definitely-too-short cameo (sigh!)in THE HAUNTED PALACE (huzzaaaa!) recently.
It was so. 👏 Much. 👏 FUN! 👏 Him and FL Lee Sun-bin were really good in both comedy and action scenes. I was laughing out loud many times. 😆 Exactly what I needed…
Kudos to @hopefulromantic for this recommendation! 🫰👏🥳

I'm talking about Attic Cat (2003. Wow!)

I always wonder when the tropes started, and in which dramas. And in Attic Cat there are several tropes and they work perfectly.

Oldies are always very "refreshing" to me. It was so noticeable that they were made only or mainly for Korean audiences, and I love that.

I enjoyed the first episode. It's not amazing, but I did actually guffaw at one scene (I love kdramas, but even the comedic ones don't usually make me literally LOL, so it's notable that I did so). The leads are fun to watch in their roles and although the writing could be more clever, it isn't as predictable as I feared. I'm not sure there's enough story here for things to stay interesting all the way through, but I'll watch ep. 2.

Since it's a travel show, I assume they have an educated guide(s) with them? Yuning reportedly snored away all 10+ hours flight there, poor thing, must've been his best rest in ages. He'll tell us in details once he streams next time for sure - maybe we'll even get Italian special! He badly wanted to do walking around stream during his little vacay months ago, but tech didn't cooperate, unfortunately... perhaps he's more prepared this time.

They're both giants, but Yuning has a bad habit of lowering himself to others when talking and esp for photos, so it can be hard to tell.

Working on it rn, gotta be fun))) I suppose they'll stay in Rome for a few more days at least, lots to explore there.

1
6
reply

Required fields are marked *

He's terrified of water - cannot swim at all and developed severe phobia after nearly drowning once as a kid. Then on set of HEROES (2022) he had to film lots of water torture scenes with PD basically demanding to do it for real because ~artistry~ (I have a lot to say here, but better if I don't) and got scared even more. To the point of allegedly adding "no swimming/diving etc scenes" clause to his contracts ever since. Not sure if that's true, but he really did not film in waters deeper than bathtub in any his following shows. ADWAD has pond rescue/underwater kiss scene, and it was done with stunt double performing the dive + CGI. Fans repeatedly urge him to take swimming class, but he keeps finding excuses to shut the idea down (sorry, I don't believe for one second he cannot afford private lessons without random onlookers around if he's really as shy as he claims to be).

2
5
reply

Required fields are marked *

This is so sad. Is it allowed for a PD to push their artist so far. No wonder he has PSTD. I don't blame him for not wanting to learn how to swim. It is funny how much water and its politics played such an important role in TPOB.

2

@seeker this PD has a reputation for making things hard for actors... and also bringing out the best of them, even the weakest, so I guess industry tolerates his questionable methods since they actually deliver results. Not that it makes things any better...

I suspect Yuning will try to get over this phobia eventually - he's very stubborn and not-so-secretly proud, hating being told (even by himself lol) that he cannot do something. Man also used to be afraid of darkness, heights, horses, doing intimate stuff on camera - and look at him now, heh. Even if purely out of spite, he'll do it!

1

Gikata, the more I learn about your boy the more impressed I get. Going by his past record then it would not be a surprise to having him volunteer to play the swimmer plus singer ML in any Chinese remake of Carry Sun-Jae And Run (Lovely Runner). 🏊‍♂️🎶🎤

2

@seeker ahaha, if only! He keeps going back and forth on idea of starring in a simple sweet romcom... but maybe if plot maintains thriller element he will be interested. No high school stuff for sure tho)))

2

Well I think LYN must surely be a 007 fan. His policy does seem to be - Never Say Never. Even if he gets told or himself says "no".

So yes all hope is not lost. Maybe his interest in finally playing a Korean Oppa might overcome challenges. After all he has researched enough K-dramas for training. 😂

2

@seeker if you try hard enough, anything is possible. Especially in culinary))) My mother once invented zucchini jam. And she's not even the most insane creative cook in the family, that's mine crown to wear^^

If it's too sour, mix with another flavor. I think combo with chocolate one is quite popular? And look more into gelato/sorbet types rather than basic iced juice popsicles, latter can be hard on one's stomach indeed.

2

🤯 "zucchini jam" you say!?
Okay I have a lot to learn. Can I request you to kindly share some of your "creative" dishes. I would love to know.

Kim Ji-hoon on his experience playing the king in THE HAUNTED PALACE

To think that this was one of the most demanding roles of his career seems obvious (I guess double roles are especially difficult to play!), but I didn’t expect this to be as hard on him as he describes here. Sounds as if it was both rewarding - but mostly really challenging. Hoping he will get to play enjoyable roles in the future.
(… anyone else also noticed that he regained his strength in truly imogi-style fashion? 😅🌊🐉)

Required fields are marked *

Thank you for sharing this interview. Kim Ji-hoon was definitely the MVP in The Haunted Palace. His interview about how he played the King, Lee Jeong is eye-opening and heartbreaking all at the same time.

I was awed by his approach to the role. "... A king doesn't have ordinary moments. If I didn't pour everything I had into it, I couldn't have expressed those emotions ... Without life experience, I don't think I would have been able to empathize with this character."

But it was heartbreaking to hear him say that "So I feel a bit regretful that not even a tenth of my efforts I put in for filming made it into the final broadcast."

Our artists really go through a lot during filming and this role was especially challenging but to think that ninety percent of that hard work never made it to the final cut is simply mind-boggling. ✂️ 😕 It really makes me wonder how the drama would have turned out if we actually got to see the entire performance. Sigh, hwaiting Ji-hoon sshi even your ten percent shone bright. 🌞

I too loved this imoogi style recuperation idea.

2
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

Exactly! Wondering how much material they normally film in total vs. the scenes that end up in the final cut - was it different/a lot more in this specific drama? Etc. It must really be a lot of surplus minutes/hours, because most of the scenes contain cuts between different camera angles etc., so reshooting one scene again and again would really be the norm! But considering his reflection on the filming for THE HAUNTED PALACE, this might have been a lot more than usual? Can only speculate…
Anyways: I enjoyed the drama so much, last but not least because of the well-written and then well-acted character of the king. Really a great role & such a good job by KJH & the team!

1
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think dramas have a specific budget and cannot ordinarily be filming say ninety percent extra. But here it seems these must be some behind-the-scenes shenanigans between the writing team and the PDs who apparently filmed way too much extra material and the editing. As Kim Ji-hoon was so exceptionally good I felt even more sad that we weren't able to his his entire work.

1

Of course there would be plenty or retakes and shooting from different angles but he specifically talks sbout certain scenes not making it to the final cut.

It is a wonder the drama still came out as good as it did despite these bts happenings.

I just finally finished watching MELO MOVIE. My first squee is for the most precious, sweet, adorable, Choi Woo Shik. He absolutely lights up the screen whenever he appears. Second squee is for Lee Jun Young, (he has had such a busy year!) who ALMOST stole the show from Woo Shik. He was amazing as the 2nd ML. Honorable mentions to Kim Jae Wook, (he worked hard to not be a hottie!!) and Jeon So Nee (2nd FL, that I was not familiar with) were also amazing. I have to admit that I am just not a Park Bo Young fan, as hard as I try to be. She and Woo Shik were sweet together, but I just didn't feel the romance and I find I feel that way often with her characters (maybe more in Strong Girl BS - but come on, with Park Hyung Sik!!). Wondering how I will feel about her in Our Unwritten Seoul when I give in and start watching.
I worked very hard to stick with this drama and it really wasn't until episode 6 that I finally was hooked. All of the characters were so thoughtfully written and portrayed and it did make me have a lot of feelings. So, I'm glad that i finished it!

I recently watched Strong Girl BS and was not impressed. Their relationship was cute and I always appreciate PHS but the story was all over the place and I just did not like it. I hope I'll like Our Unwritten Seoul too. I enjoyed Melo Movie but it was just ok for me.

Strong Girl BS was one of the dramas I watched in my first months in Dramaland (first quarter of 2022). I watched it because it appeared in lots of lists and rankings.
Well, I liked the main couple but nothing else. Too much cringe. I had to speed some scenes.

It had a very special, ehm, Korean humour. 😬😬

I didn't have my reading glasses and the emoji was supposed to be 😁... 😆... though 😬 may fit as well, given the type of the humour. 😄

The emoji was exactly my face in some scenes 🙈

😂🤣 All emojis are perfect.

@IsaGC You hit the nail on the head. Watching K-dramas does at times make us express the entire range of emojis on our faces.

Totally agree about the cringe! I watched it a few years ago on a PHS binge and had a hard time getting through it.

Yes, I used FF quite a bit!! Cringe indeed. Plus the show couldn't decide what genre it wanted to be. Characters and storylines randomly appeared and disappeared, people did stupid things, etc. etc. What woman having been attacked kidnapped and held prisoner wanders back out into the same area alone at night?! Moments like that were eye rolling. I like PHS but this one was pretty poor.

@goyangi

Totally agree. I still can't see what so many people see in that drama, to the point of being so popular.
But to each their own.

Oh my, Namkooong Min looks so... soft? in Uri Movie. It is not that I want to squee aloud, it is more for a small private inner squee. 😊

Going to squee here about how much I love The Woks of Life web/blog site. Just finished making dumplings from their <The Only Dumpling Recipe You Will Ever Need.
Still learning, still adjusting to available ingredients and altitude (2,000 meters). Must share that after a morning working in the garden how great it is to treat a tired old body to some delish dumplings fresh from the air-fryer.
Life is good. Enjoy yourself.

I have just finished watching and yes, I agree, ep7 was perfection, from beginning till end, surprisingly especially Moms. 🙂

I was inner-squeeing the whole second episode 2 of Uri Movie, because I really loved the slow pace, the lingering in the moment, the perspectives of our leads, the camera work... and then, then they introduced Dad (plus he is played by Kwon Haehyo!) and my heart stopped... because I saw me, a person whose close family member was dying... with no hope for recovery... and the memories flooded me ...the constant fears of the (very known) future and yet trying not to let it show...
And I get Dad's NO to Female's Lead request to leave the hospital... because he doesn't want her to shorten her life even by a second... (even if I get her point of view).
