The sun will rise again for JTBC’s Nice Guy Lee Dong-wook
by tccolb
Promos are now in full swing for JTBC’s The Nice Guy (previously The Good Man), giving us plenty to peruse with a new poster as well as three video teasers of our noir romance hero Lee Dong-wook (The Divorce Insurance).
As the lonely Park Seok-chul, Lee Dong-wook’s character had once dreamed of becoming a writer like Ernest Hemingway. It was merely a child’s dream according to his family, who expected him to carry on their legacy as the eldest grandson, having been powerful players in the criminal underworld for three generations (and counting).
Seok-chul thus chose to be obedient and followed in the dark footsteps of his godfather forefathers before him. And he defends his choice in the first character trailer, explaining that there were many things on the line that he needed to protect.
However, as we see in teaser #2, the heavy-hearted Seok-chul didn’t forget his dream. And he begins to wonder – like Hemingway once said – if the sun rise will rise again and bring hope for Seok-chul’s life as well.
In the final teaser, Seok-chul finds himself at a new crossroads, perhaps inspired by his run-in with first love Lee Sung-kyung (Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 3) – though she’s not yet featured in these promos. We then close on his narration that, “At a later date, the future me will go somewhere and say that deep in the woods, there was a diverging path. I picked the one that few choose to walk and because of that, everything changed.”
The series also stars Park Hoon (Bloodhounds) and Oh Nara (Villains Everywhere), as well as Ryu Hye-young (Gangnam B-Side) and Chun Ho-jin (Heavenly Ever After).
On the production side, filmmaker Song Hae-sung (Boomerang Family, Maundy Thursday) and PD Park Hong-soo (Human Disqualification) are co-directing, alongside scripts co-written by Kim Woon-kyung (Yoo-na’s Street) and Kim Hyo-seok (Yadang: The Snitch). Slated to premiere on July 18 next month, The Nice Guy will be launching in JTBC’s new Friday slot, airing two episodes a week for its 14-episode run.

I am simply grateful for a LDW show that apparently does not involve the supernatural or the super-frothy.

Oh Nara???
Okay, I'm in for a few episodes even though the plot doesn't intrigue me.

1. Are underworld criminal families the new chaebol families?
2. When a popular drama with a very similar title is airing, you change your title to another popular drama title... At least the other one is more than a decade old?
3. The premise doesn't interest me, but neither did A Shop For Killers, but I started it for Lee Dong Wook and ended up liking it very much. Maybe this will finally be the drama that will make me appreciate Lee Sung Kyung and Park Hoon?

So is this a bit like Sweet mobster minus the sweet part? His styling here is giving me major Bad and Crazy vibes so I'm in! Hope the action sequences (guess there would be a couple, no?) are as good as that show! I'm just gonna call this drama "Good Person" because we already have a Good Boy and a Nice Guy (even if it was mispelled!)! don't go complicating things for me, dramaland!

I like both Lee Dong-wook and Lee Sung-kyung separately, but idk they just don’t work for me as a romantic pair. I’d much rather Oh Nara was the first love/muse character.
