The Nice Guy Lee Dong-wook renounces the thug life

The latest teaser is out for JTBC’s noir romance The Nice Guy, which will inaugurate the broadcasting channel’s new Friday time slot. Centering around a gangster who decides to turn over a new leaf, the 14-part drama will air two consecutive episodes each week.

As the titular hero, Lee Dong-wook (The Divorce Insurance) plays Park Seok-chul, the eldest grandson of a gangster family. Having built their legacy in the criminal underworld across three generations, the organization is proud to call Seok-chul their ace — but the man himself isn’t as enthused about his origins. “After I wrap up this job, I’m leaving,” declares Seok-chul, weariness written across his face.

Needless to say, there’s no doubt the gang won’t let him walk out that easily. Park Hoon (Bloodhounds) rips off his boxing glove with his teeth, cutting an imposing figure as the rival gang boss Kang Tae-hoon. Someone places a knife on the table, and the chairman Kim Chang-soo — played by Lee Moon-shik (Tarot) — issues an order to Seok-chul. He’s to end Tae-hoon with his own hands.

Survival itself is at stake for Seok-chul, whose life has been twisted from the very beginning. From swift punches to strangled throats, violence is the norm within these circles, and it seems Seok-chul must draw upon every skill in his arsenal if he wants to escape intact. On top of that, it seems the pair have history. “Park Seok-chul, of all people, it’s you,” muses Tae-hoon with a wry scoff.

Having resolved to put his gangster days behind him, Seok-chul pours his all into this final fight. “If we go on like this, it’ll be war,” warns the narration, emphasizing the stakes — but there’s no backing out now. Seok-chul must renounce his unsavory background. We don’t see her yet, but Lee Sung-kyung (Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 3) will enter the fray as the aspiring singer Kang Mi-young, whom Seok-chul carries a flame for. Alongside his aspiration of becoming a novelist, perhaps it’s with her that Seok-chul dreams of a better life.

Directed by Song Hae-sung (Boomerang Family) and Park Hong-soo (Human Disqualification), with scripts by Kim Woon-kyung (Yoona’s Street) and Kim Hyo-seok (Yadang: The Snitch), The Nice Guy will premiere on July 18.

I've always had a soft spot for Lee Sung-kyung, since her Weighlifting Fairy days, always thought she was talented and deserved a much bigger career.

Will definately give this a chance

The more dramas I watch the more actors I have a deep fondness for and follow and Lee Dong-wook is one of them. Just now be available for us in the US on a good site! Missed his last one but it sounds like dodging a bullet?
