Attention all interested Beanies! We are starting a community watch for Mr. Queen! We’ll be watching two episodes a week, and commenting in the already-existing hangouts (they are sort of proto-weecaps, so there is a short summary of the episodes to kick each one off). We’re starting THIS WEEK and if anyone would like to join us you are more than welcome! Just comment on this post to let me know and I’ll add you to the tag list. We’ll mostly be having a commented conversation on Wednesday-Thursday each week, which should give people time to get through all the weekend dramas and then watch the episodes on Monday-Tuesday. Make sense? So we’ll watch eps 1-2 and start commenting around June 18 in the first hangout.

In the US, Mr. Queen is available via Viki or Netflix and maybe people in other regions can chime in with availability for them, but hopefully it’s accessible to a lot of folks!

@ceciliedk did I forget anything?

I’ll tag along to read the comments, because I love love love Mr. Queen, but I’m afraid I can’t commit to the rewatch because of time. But I’m so excited to see a community watch happening after the Wallpocalypse. Thank you!

"The Secret" ep. 1 and 2 are for comforting people who thinks the ending lacks something. It's nice that they've done it, though I like my own fan fiction (that I haven't written out as something with dialogues, just as a plot sketch) is better.
My fan fic also opens up for the possibility of a whole second season that would admittedly demand a lot from Choi Jin Hyuk .
Anyways: It's better to watch it as an afterthought, after ending the drama. Otherwise it would have to be somewhere close to the ending.

2

@ceciliedk I haven't watched "The secret" and will wait until the CW is complete to see if I really need to see them. And I'll look forward to reading your fanfic one way or another!!

As long as the second works, I don't worry too much. Maybe it doesn't let the same person be tagged twice in one comment, or maybe it needs to be with a big M.

Happy Friday the 13th. There has been so much negative K-entertainment news this year, we have some happy news this week.

Maeil Business Newspaper reported this week that tvN’s beloved travel variety show 'House on Wheels' is planning its fifth season. Although the cast lineup and filming locations have not yet been confirmed, tvN has officially announced the launch of 'House on Wheels: Season 5.' This marks the return of the series nearly three years after the fourth season aired in 2022. House on Wheels features stars traveling across South Korea in a portable home, where they invite special guests to spend a day living together. Since its premiere in 2020, veteran actors Sung Dong Il and Kim Hee Won have served as the main cast. Each season also included a younger actor such as Yeo Jin Goo, Im Si Wan (Siwan), Gong Myung, or Rowoon, adding a unique charm to every installment.

The series began in 2020, a few months after COVID hit South Korea. It helped set off the car camping craze in Asia. The first season was star studded: Ra Mi Ran (an avid camper), Lee Hye Ri, Gong Hyo Jin, IU, and Ha Ji Won. It was an interesting, relaxing talk show between fellow actors. Look forward to its return (hopefully with the original hosts).

I know there are a few "Wheels" spin-offs, some official by tvN and other copies by other networks. I've seen clips of House on Wheels: For Rent with The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure cast, and Restaurant on Wheels, aka 4 Wheeled Restaurant.

But recently because of my algorithm, aka Lee Jun-young, YouTube has been recommending for me Heart on Wheels on KBS. The main cast is Lee Min-jung, Boom, Ahn Jae-hyun, Kim Jung-hyun, and Kim Jae-won with Lee Jun-young as a guest in Eps. 3-4. It looks cute, but I haven't been able to find it with subs.

Meanwhile here in the suburbs of Los Angeles... things are terrible in some places but it isn't as widespread (yet) as you might think from the news.

The corners of LA country where I hang out look totally normal (at least on the surface). I have seen zero ICEicles, marines or national guard. No unusual police presence (but perhaps that's because they're all out at the Home Depots in other suburbs ???). Not even more sirens in the distance than usual.

The demonstration I attended several weeks ago at the Torrance city hall was totally calm and peaceful. I don't even recall seeing any police presence, and none was needed anyway.

We'll see about the demonstration there that I plan to attend tomorrow.

My niece was out this week demonstrating around the very Home Depot that sparked our country's wannabe Kim Jong Un to send in the marines, hoping they'd kill a few people who disagreed with him. (the president really, really hates many of the people he supposedly represents.).

Even at the protest's flashpoint it was largely peaceful during the week, though my niece said when someone set a trash can on fire, t.v. journalists sprinted over to film it--to get some good "riot" footage.

There are a ton of kdrama references that I could make--any that feature corrupt, conniving, power hungry, morally degenerate government officials provide good comparison with what's going on with the U.S. national government right now. But the most immediate pop cultural comparison is with Andor, the latest Star Wars show.

U.S. authoritarians are trying to follow the Evil Empire playbook that is central to that show, by fomenting violence and then saying the "uprising" demands that its citizenry be crushed. I don't think its too much to say that many of them relish the thought of killing their opponents.

The problem for the U.S. administration is that they aren't as smart as Galactic Empire officials. Kristi Noem (for non-U.S. readers, the Head of "Homeland Security") certainly is evil (she has bragged in the past about shooting a puppy who was disobedient) but she has spent more money on sculpting her body than her mind. Her ignorance is laughable--for sure she is no Dedra Meero (for non Andor watchers, a formidably scheming official for the Galactic empire brilliantly played by actress Denise Gough) That's not to say that Noem won't do enormous damage to U.S. society, as all of the Trump administration has done so far.

I too will be joining the No Kings protest, although presently I am out of the state of California, so I won't be lucky enough to run into @lordcobol . I am under no illusion our marching will accomplish anything--the main imagery the major news outlets will televise will be tanks parading through Washington D.C. as Trump tries to demonstrate he has the nation under his tiny thumb. But perhaps counter demonstrations can at least show the world that the U.S. still has some democracy left. I am also taking inspiration from South Koreans, who showed that they would not allow their government to revert to authoritarianism!

I think some forceful resistance is definitely called for but I don’t want any protesters to get harmed. Despite my hopes, I have often found myself conflicted about whether peaceful protests by themselves are enough. As I said I think they have an important role to play but there have to be other forms of protest as well.

Allow me to politely disagree with you … I do think your marching will accomplish something. If anything, it will make the world pay attention - look here, not all Americans follow the Mango Mussolini!
I'm hoping/ guessing most international news broadcasters will be more interested in the marches than in the birthday parade.
I usually, fatalistically also think things I do don't matter, but I've started in April to #buy european (which is a thing over here because of the tariffs), and I'm not the only one - by now, there are several dedicated apps to identify a product as american and help you chose a european alternative. And according to several articles I've read, it really is making a dent in things.
To quote an american show I loved before Kdrama (Angel): If nothing what we do, matters, then all that matters is what we do.

Thanks for your comment, and thanks to other DB commentators for their own participation. I just returned from the march I went to--impressive turnout for a place outside of, but not in Portland Oregon. Its true it does inspire hope that so many Americans refuse to allow this current national government to define and control them. And I found it significant that where the march began there was a food truck offering "Korean Comfort Food!"

This afternoon I swung past the Gardena Home Depot and all looked normal, including the guys who look like day laborers.

Then coworkers tell me that ICEicles have been seen near at least 4 places not terribly far from work. None of those have been in the news as far as I know.

Sigh.

I hear that from everywhere, and latest from Josh Johnson; there's like, one or two blocks where there more trouble, and in other places, people are recklessly blowing soap bubbles, dressing up as handmaids, or, because the demo passed a convention for anime, a group of cos-players joined the parade.
There's no need to stay in the periphery, only, if you see someone burn a car, you're in the wrong place. And also, of course, calling in the police AND the National Guard AND even the Navy? or the Marines? ... it makes it very likely that trouble will occur, but not because of the LA inhabitants.

Happy Friday, Beanies! While LYN is enjoying exotic (to him) food and sightseeing in Rome, we're gonna enjoy lots of music from him and mentally prepare themselves for ADWAD – end of June rumors now look legit. There are also some remaining TPOB materials, including recently subbed interviews and celebration party footage. But first of all, music – 2 new OST today!

Starting with a cool banger “After the nightmare” - action theme of THE SEVEN RELICS OF (ILL) OMEN. I just love how it sounds, so thrilling! There is no genre he's bad at, ofc, but adventure dramas OST are always a treat. No MV afaik, but here's subbed lyrics:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqIBBt0sIPA

And mood whiplash - “Carefree wandering immortal”, ending theme from THE LITCHI ROAD. It's... indescribable lol, you need to hear it for yourself lmao. This is the tone you'd mostly encounter in his livestreams during goofing around times, and yet not quite. Surely he had lots of fun with this one))) Subbed lyrics:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eajoUzvx678

Initially I planned to wrap Carnation 5.0 coverage in 3 weeks, but there's too much of everything going otherwise, so splitting remaining songs in two parts as well. How about more Canto with Ekin Cheng's “Years of friendship”? I think we've heard it before, but when exactly... Great stuff tho, so energetic!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5K2ErYRMuM

And a ballad to slow down a bit – Zhao Zihua's “Time for a tear”. And by ballad I mean it's SAD – depressing level of that, the whole song is drowning in loneliness and heartbreak. Yuning's take is softening that blow somehow – I've heard the man angsting far worse in songs, this is nothing, really! Maybe the shining abstatic cuirass made him take himself not too seriously
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOht2Sf_hX4

Another familiar tune – Sir Deer's “Ten miles of spring breeze” (damn should've use it two weeks ago, before summer!). Ge, pls, focus on singing – when you're flashing that breathtaking smile, I automatically smile too, and now my face hurts, my deadpan self is not used to this at all!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtqxCXEaLK8

A-Yue's (Zhang Zhenyue) “Goodbye”, feat trumpet – as if a goddamn kazoo wasn't enough!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCxdSg2m5bs

Bonuses: we aren't yet fully done with TPOB, nope! Yuning's farewell essay to his role – he's almost rivaling my usual word count here, omg! Why his acting almost always works for me – he treats his characters like they are living people, and that's very important, imo. Feat polaroid solo pic ge, the whole point of these is to get non-edited insta photo!

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!
Long time no see, huh?😉
May was Social Saturday Month in my calendar, which demanded a lot more time and energy than my autistic brain anticipated. As lovely as each Saturday was, it would have worked a lot better if it were more spread out in time. I was too exhausted after the work week on Fridays to write on Open Thread or do anything else, and yet I often had to ignore that fatigue to urgently prepare for Saturday.
Obviously, I also could not post on what we are watching on Saturdays or keep up with all the K-drama episodes. I would catch up on my free Sundays, but this weekly energy giver was never enough to take on the weekly energy takers.
Both my current K-batch and scheduled activities are dwindling, so I was able to post again. See you tomorrow on what we are watching!😊

Lastly, there were Jin Young and Lee Jae-In to promote not Our Unwritten Seoul but their movie Hi-5. Korean male singers should use their low voice more often!

I have been re-watching The Art of Negotiation and continue to be confused about the manner in which certain characters call out titles/names of other characters, although some of it may be due to Viki translation. I'm hoping some of the Korean language experts here on DB can help interpret.

Lee Ji Hoon plays Team Leader Yun Ju-no. His team includes Kwak Min-jeong (team manager/female), Oh Sun-yeong (attorney/male) and Choi Jin-su (intern/male).

Everyone on the team calls the leader Mr. Yun, even those who have worked with him for several years. Very formal - makes sense.

However, Jun-no calls Mr. Oh "attorney" (not Mr. Oh or Oh Sun-yeong). Is this considered to be less formal/more casual or equally formal?

Jun-no calls the manager "Min-jeong" (never Ms. Kwak, Kwak Min-jeong or even Manager Kwak). Very informal according to my understanding of Korean. The attorney occasionally calls her Kwak Min-jeong. If they call her "Manager" (siljangnim), my ear hasn't caught it and Viki hasn't translated it

Everyone calls the intern by his first name: Jin-su - I assume this is intended to show that his low status, but why not use his last name as well (i.e Choi Jin-su)?

Finally, the intern uses formal titles (Mr. and Ms.) which makes sense to me.

The biggest puzzle to me is Jun-no's very casual use of "Min-yeong" and her very formal use of Mr. Yun. To the average Korean viewer - does this signify anything? (And I don't mean romantic).

I don't even really know how to phrase this but I feel like every time I collabrations happen in the kpop world, there is always so comments the collaborator is somehow problematic and the artist in question should've known better. Like you're supposed to do deep dives into their personal lives and relationships to work on music together.

Like nowadays people are just supposed to be black & white; they can't be a respected senior in the field with valuable knowledge and experience to share and have done things the "current" social landscape has issued with.

Also I've seen things blown out of proportion and *that* becomes the artist's whole "problematic" identity. I guess an example would be T.O.P.
He did marijuana, got in trouble, and did his sentence (of whatever it was) and yet there are people who STILL demonize him and it's been years.

I think most of us agrees.
Especially (or really only) when the thing they are being scandalized for having done is like ... well, not that bad.
I mean, it doesn't feel good to know that and ML is a rapist, I think we can agree.
But having been high on occasion? His problem. And a former girlfriend had an abortion? Really none of our business. Rumours about maybe once having done something? Please, chillax, the world is full of rumours.
People that we like disappear from the screen because of every kind of behaviour that is not strictly Sunday School, and it would be nice if only really bad behaviour had that kind of consequence. I feel sometimes it's more a question of blackmailing stars into subservience than to make sure that vicious people do not star in K-dramas.
ALso, the fact that if they are scandalized, they not only have their career ruined, but will have to pay a lot of money they don't have for not living up to their sponsors' demands of blank page living.

There is a problem with the tag alerts. Maybe it is caused by the anti-linking rule?
Can't the link-modifier be modified to let people tag to their heart's delight, if they are tagging other Beanies?
And if someone use it for spam, then we can flag it and take it away.
Also, and not unrelated, a lot of us miss the "latest comment" button.
Without those things, a lot of the site just seems overwhelming, it becomes harder to form friendships here.
If it is not possible, can you at least tell us why?

I have tried two Disney Kdramas this year - different genres, but both have the same problem - style over substance (at least my eyes saw NO "substance" at all). Just no backstory, no motivations, an abundance of clichés, and super popular actors giving (as I saw) REALLY affected performances. Now, I'm not gonna name names. But dear dramas, could you please give me something I can connect to as a mere human? I am not asking for blaring sound effects, nice dresses, and declarative statements that let me know WHAT to FEEL! Just give those damned characters a life situation that feels HUMAN, so that I can empathise with them!

Maybe I am looking for that essence of being human in the wrong dramas. From viewer feedback, it seems Our Unwritten Seoul might be hitting that target more accurately. BUT... there happens to be someone there who I find so terribly stiff (again, naming no names)... Maybe I can ignore them, but can I? Also, I might not be ready to watch something related to mental health... my own is too fragile 😅. But seriously, dear Kdramas, where is that knack of yours of making fictional AF characters seem realistic with "real" emotional connect ?. Why are the characters SO superficial? Why are the "reliable" stars SO unconvincing in their performances? Or is it me, who is asking for too much when I don't even want to invest my tears for dramas? But can't I feel without tears? Maybe a good backstory really helps, writernims? And no amount of SFX and sentimental VOs/ montages can actually make up for its absence!

Thanks for reading my (maybe undeserved) rant.

I am STILL not naming names... BUT... the critic inside of me can't help but agree with this review of a recent drama I have decided to drop at ep1....

A harsh review? Yes! But felt so true (to me, at least).
