Good Boy: Episodes 1-2
by Unit
Calling all good boys and girls to cheer from the sidelines as a group of forgotten sports heroes step back into the spotlight to fight crime. There are no trophies or medals involved in this career pivot — just scrapes, bruises, and underappreciation from the higher-ups. But our ~good boys~ are determined to push back and prove themselves regardless of whatever the opposition throws at them.
EPISODES 1-2
Our show is set in Gotham Insung city, a hub of violent crimes, and Batman a group of former-athletes-turned-police-officers at the Insung Metropolitan Police Agency are set to protect and serve the city. First on the list is ex-boxer YOON DONG-JOO (Park Bo-gum) — who is back in Insung from Seoul, after getting demoted for beating up his colleagues for taking bribes. Dong-joo is more brawn than brains, and he wears his heart on his sleeves. We’ll come to learn that his gold medal is mired by doping allegations — and while he was cleared after a two-year legal battle, most people still think he doped.
Next up is senior officer JI HANNA, a.k.a the shooting fairy (Kim So-hyun) — who conquered the air rifle world, and is now killing it at the agency. Okay, killing it is quite a stretch. Despite wanting a field position, Hanna is stuck with a thankless desk job, and she reluctantly pulls double duty as the agency’s promotional mascot. (PS: Dong-joo has THE biggest crush on Hanna and he’s not doing anything to hide it.)
Joining his colleagues at Insung, is sergeant KIM JONG-HYEON (Lee Sang-yi) — a champion sabre fencer, newly dispatched to the audit and inspection department. Jong-hyeon’s special promotion is his reward for getting corrupt policemen suspended, but his arrival is met with hostility from some officers who accuse him of stabbing their — corrupt, mind you — colleagues in the back. Tsk. (PS: Dong-joo has a one-sided beef with Jong-hyeon because Jong-hyeon is more popular with the ladies, and he used to date Hanna. Pfft.)
Rounding out our junior good boys is traffic officer SHIN JAE-HONG (Tae Won-seok), a former discus throw medalist — who was passed on for promotion and sent to the traffic division as punishment. For now, all we know is that Jae-hong’s punishment is a fallout of Jong-hyeon’s anti-corruption crusade — even though Jae-hong seems to be innocent of any wrongdoing.
Our most senior good boy is lieutenant GO MAN-SHIK (Heo Sung-tae), a former Greco-Roman wrestler. Despite being on the job for 14 years, Man-shik is pretty much a doormat in the agency, and his colleagues don’t respect him. Generally, most of the officers at the agency look down on our good boys for coming in through the “backdoor” of special recruitment. And our ex-athletes are stuck in the position of having to continually prove themselves worthy of their position.
Now that we’re done with character introduction, it’s time for some action! Our first case is the arrest of a smuggling gang leader, Golden Bunny. Dong-joo and Man-shik are paired to support the team leading the manhunt, but a sudden explosion blows everyone’s cover. Golden Bunny manages to escape, and Dong-joo and Man-shik are held responsible for the escape. Our second case is a hit and run that occurs when Dong-joo is on stakeout duty. Dong-joo recognizes the hit and run car as a vehicle of interest in the bunny case, and he tries — and fails to — convince Man-shik that finding the driver will lead them to Golden Bunny.
In the meantime, Jong-hyeon reviews footage of Golden Bunny’s manhunt and discovers that: 1) the explosion was intentionally set off; 2) someone reported the explosion five minutes before it went off; and 3) there’s a mole in the agency. Oh wow! *sips tea of internal sabotage and conspiracy* Jong-hyeon informs Man-shik about his discovery (since the bunny case was originally Man-shik’s before it was handed to another team), and we learn that the informant who tipped Man-shik off to the smuggling ring is a customs agent — who, unfortunately, is the hit and run victim. To further link cases #1 and 2, the shadowy hit and run driver calls Dong-joo with a fake tip, and sets him up to be taken out by Golden Bunny. Uh-oh.
While all of this is going on, Hanna is sent to bring the late customs agent’s personal effects to his family, but she meets them in mourning and decides to hold onto the items for the time being. Some men break into her house in search of a document among the customs agent’s belongings, and Jong-hyeon — who’s on the phone with Hanna — overhears the scuffle. But on his way to Hanna’s, members of a snake gang accost him and they are out for blood. Seriously, they couldn’t have picked another time?
The stage is set for our athletes to prove themselves in a literal fight for their lives, and they do it with flair and in a way true to their respective sports. Dong-joo and his fists go up against the bunny gang, while Hanna and her rifle engage in a face off with the home invaders. Jong-hyeon fences off the snake gang with the handle of a broom, and traffic officer Jae-hong stops a reckless driver by throwing a freaking manhole cover at the car! LMAO! Not to be left out of the fun, Man-shik throws the team leader of the bunny case in the ring — because the team leader only agreed to send backup to Dong-joo on the condition that Man-shik wrestles with him.
Our good boys’ feat in subduing their respective targets earns them the front page spot of the city’s newspapers. Man-shik sees this as a chance to further his career and he pitches the idea of a Special Criminal Investigation Team to the police commissioner. Hanna agrees to join the team to get field experience, Dong-joo joins because he is determined to follow Hanna everywhere like a lost puppy, and Jae-hong comes onboard after Man-shik promises to use his team leader powers to help with Jae-hong’s promotion. Jong-hyeon declines the offer to join the team, but he agrees to work cases with them.
The team soon learns that the police commissioner only greenlit them for promotional activities rather than criminal investigations. Ouch! Hanna has had it with the commissioner constantly using her for PR, so she shoots him in the chest at a public demonstration for new police equipment! I mean, his stab-proof vest wasn’t going to test itself. Pfft. Unfortunately, the vest is of poor quality and the commissioner cracks a rib. Oops! He orders that Hanna be fired, but Jong-hyeon coaxes him to rescind his decision. Nevertheless, Hanna drops her resignation, and Jong-hyeon fails to persuade her to stay. Dong-joo’s persuasion skills don’t work on Hanna either, and she even shuts down his suggestion that she might come to return his romantic feelings. But you know what they say about famous last words.
While idling away, Man-shik intercepts a tip that two of Hanna’s home invaders are at a safe house. He rallies his team and calls Jong-hyeon to meet them at the location. On the way, Man-shik steals some candy from another team’s evidence box — which, hilariously, contains hallucinogens — and the effect kicks in on their arrival. Cue: utter chaos at the safe house. LMAO! While attempting to arrest one of the invaders, Jong-hyeon is poked in the chest with an iron, and some unresolved PTSD from his fencing days kicks in. Uh-oh. Jong-hyeon narrowly misses getting stabbed in the stomach when a very-high Man-shik steps in to take the hit, and the invaders escape during the ensuing commotion. Thankfully, Dong-joo drags Man-shik to the hospital in a shopping cart to beat the traffic, and Man-shik will live to fight another day. Phew!
The criminals might have escaped, but luck soon shines on the team when the culprit of the hit and run comes to turn himself in. The culprit in question is Dong-joo’s friend and boxing colleague, LEE GYEONG-IL (Lee Jung-ha). Gyeong-il was forced into retirement after an injury, and he got hooked on painkillers no thanks to their coach, OH JONG-GU (Jung Man-shik). By the way, it’s implied that Coach Oh is behind Dong-joo’s doping allegations as payback for Dong-joo’s refusal to join the MMA circuit — after Oh took money for the MMA deal. Smh. Oh has since left his coaching career to run a security agency — which Gyeong-il works at, despite Dong-joo’s insistence against it because Oh is not to be trusted.
Dong-joo knows Gyeong-il is innocent because: 1) he saw the shadowy side profile of the real culprit while chasing — or rather, getting dragged along by — the car; and 2) the last time the guys were together, Gyeong-il left after getting a suspicious text from Coach Oh — which Dong-joo now believes is the reason behind the sudden confession. Dong-joo’s hypothesis is correct because truly, Gyeong-il was threatened to take the fall by Coach Oh and the real culprit. As for who the real culprit is, we’ll get into that in a minute.
Hanna visits the custom agent’s family to drop off what’s left of his personal effects, and she wavers when his little son begs her to catch and punish his father’s killer. As the curtains draw on our first week, Dong-joo pays his respects at the agent’s funeral, and he sights one of the guests wearing a distinct wristwatch. You see, while getting dragged along on the night of the hit and run, Dong-joo spotted that same watch on the culprit’s wrist. Dong-joo tracks the guest all the way to the customs office, and why, hello there, it’s MIN JOO-YOUNG (Oh Jung-se) — customs officer by day and villain by night!
That’s right, Joon-young is the big bad of our show, who is pulling strings behind Bunny gang, Coach Oh, and goodness knows how many others. I mean, it was a different set of goons he sent to retrieve the late agent’s stolen documents from the home invaders — before murdering them! Oh dear! I wonder how many more bodies will drop before this drama is over.
This was a fun premiere that delivered on both the action and the comedy as promised. The set up and character introductions were nicely done, and I look forward to learning everyone’s motivations as we continue. There are hints of guilt, trauma, and what have you in our good boys’ backstories, and I hope for their sake that they find healing as we journey along with them. In the meantime, here’s to Dong-joo and his many attempts to woo Hanna — whether by direct confession, or by burning a hole into her face with his lovingly steadfast gazes, or by pestering the district office to fix the streetlights and CCTVs in her neighborhood. And good luck to him making a case against Joo-young with just a wristwatch as evidence. Then again, who needs good luck when you’re a good boy?

I didn't catch in the promotion trailers that they were a team of "loosers" except Jong-Hyeon.
Dong-Joo is the typical puppy character and Park Bo-Gum was pretty convincing. I guess Han-Na is the badass and Jong-Hyeon the brain.
I liked the action scenes even I didn't understand why Han-Na chose to kill her poor plants instead knocking out her ennemies.
I'm not fan of the trope of the ML being insistent with his feelings for the FL. She said she wasn't interested, so calm down a little bit or be subtile!
I'm excited to watch them working as a team! Hoping their chief will get better 😅

Because it was dummy bullets as shown in the episode 2. She didn’t mean to kill the intruders but just to scare them..

Yeah I was wondering the same thing but that’s how they decided to choreograph the scene so be it. The overall action coordination and editing for those scenes has been insane. The cage scene with Dongju and the neon paint ending was extremely well shot. They deserve a technical award just for that.

My theory is that she doesn’t want them to know it’s fake bullets so it keeps them scared.

You are right about the ML being insistent being annoying, but it seems to be their thing. He says he likes her, she says no, they do it again. idk why it doesn't bother me as much in this, hmmmm, lol.

She’s the tsundere male lead and he’s the bright light bulb female lead. That aside it’s clear Hana feels something for him but is rejecting him for some unknown reason. Maybe she’s on a revenge mission for her father and doesn’t want him to get entangled in it.

This is an interesting concept.
You have 5 ex Olympic athletes who specialized in individual sports - fencing, wrestling, boxing, shooting, and discus throwing. None of them were involved in any team sports, as far as we know.
You put them together in the same unit so they can work together to solve cases.
I am very intrigued to see how their team spirit and camaraderie will develop and evolve over the show.
Looking forward to the weekend episodes.

The first 70 minutes of episode 1 were a lengthy set up which was a great intro into all the characters but it could have been a bit shorter but when the action hit it HIT! Loved the takedowns by all the characters which showed off their individual sporting prowess especially the manhole cover I did not see coming! That was some crazy Die Hard level action sequence. Episode 2 was better with the chaos and comedy being more cohesive but the team needs to come together fast because I want to see how these individual sports and personalities work in a group setting. All in all a strong premier week but I am surprised with how quickly our male lead figured out the key big bad which makes me think there might be an even bigger mastermind in this series that’s still hidden away.

The fact that there is at the very least a 'mole' in the police force (and almost certainly someone higher up on the force helping the bad guys) suggests a potential bigger bad who is deeply corrupt....

This was a lot of fun. My only issue, not really an issue more of a side eye, is that Tae Won Seok always plays these massively overpowered characters. He threw a manhole cover like it was a discus, he might as well have stopped the car with his bare hands, lol. That out of way, this was really fun and PBG as a puppy in love is cute. There is no pretense with him and that is great.

I'm a fan of Tae Won-seok and he definitely suits these types of rules but I'd love to see him flex his acting chops a bit more. I'd like to see him in a romantic pairing or angsty role. He's such a cutie, too.

I agree, he is actually a pretty solid actor, so it would be fun to see him as a 2ML because I know they will never make him a lead. A nice tsundere.

Length wise the premiere was tvn worthy-long that i had to check the broadcaster again. But they definitely n literally packed a punch. I honestly thought Good Boy would be a typical underdog story, but it’s also quite violent. Who knew Bo gum could box n bleed so well.
They balanced the dark quite well with comedy n lovesick Bogum: cue him saying yes immediately to join the team when Hana is also in it, and the smart team leader who used his crush to trick him is also the dumb one who took hallucinogen before going to catch bad guys. The whole scene was equally hilarious n exciting.
I’m loving the gang so far and can’t wait to see the five finally working while fighting with each other, because i have every confidence that they will fight and cause headaches for the Commissioner. Fun!

There’s A LOT going on in the first two episodes and the directing is uneven. It could be all over the place for some scenes but lifted to another very good level in the next.
However, what makes me stay are the main characters with each fleshed out quite distinctly as to who they are and what makes them tick. They are five different people but share the same trait for justice with varying degrees of wit and action. Park Bo Gum is great as the relentless puppy in both his pursuit for baddies and love. So is Lee Sang Yi as the brainy one and I guess he will eventually join the Avengers.
Looking forward to next two episodes.

Fun & flashy. Definitely feels big budget. The 5 different characters & their skills, the wide, full action shots, and upbeat music all add to the modern day hero vibes.
There were many extra, over the top scenes. Some were more entertaining than others. The glow in the dark paint scene looked cool overall. Man Shik hallucinating & zombie-like = not so fun. Nice to see Heo Sung Tae play a character on the good side though despite how silly his character has acted so far. Same goes for Tae Won Seok. It was fun to see the quintet use their particular skills during their jobs. Jae Hong throwing that manhole cover was fantastic!
I wish there wasn't a romance. There's plenty of plot and characters to develop without squeezing it in.
I am most interested in seeing the team grow and get along and of course triumph over the baddies. I would like the baddies to be formidable too. I was surprised that Coach Oh didn't hold back on his punches. And that Dong Joo and Joon Young have already met! He's a customs officer?! Not a director, chaebol, CEO, or something bigger? O: This drama is 16 episodes long... Curious how they will keep the tension between good vs bad. Cat and mouse game?

I wanted to like this show more than I did, but for some reason it wasn't as immediately gripping as, for example, Study Group was for me. The fight scene with the day glo paint was technically beautifully shot and choreographed but I was rolling my eyes, wondering why there were so many open cans of paint conveniently lying around, and why was there a black light that turned on and off? Why is Dong-joo repeatedly following and declaring his love to Han na? What's there to like? After the first dozen times I was just yelling at the screen for him to leave the surly girl alone. I can't put my finger on why this fell flat for me - I usually adore these kinds of dramas and happily would suspend all disbelief to enjoy the ride. I haven't given up yet - I hope things will take off once the team gels.

This was such a fun premiere week! I went into it without watching trailers or anything, so for some reason I thought we’d have to spend time recruiting them all into the police force, but having them all start there already gave a different vibe to their character intros. I like that they all have dissatisfactions with where their careers are and that they have lots of room to grow individually and as a group.
My favorite part so far was the action sequence at the end of episode 1 - the paint was extremely cool looking and it was awesome to see each of them in their element! Also cool to see Lee Jung-ha in a totally different role than I’ve seen before.

The ending scenes of both episodes were fire! I was pleasantly shocked by how well they time and film some scenes from different angles. The first ep could have been shorter (I thought the next ep. automatically played rofl) and the action scenes were believable (they got the baddies but got his fair share of bruises and injuried too!) except the manhole that nearly blew up the car... that was pure fiction right thereee rofl. The way they portray the characters as "fallen icons" or "failed athletes" puzzles me because well, they DID accomplished crazy milestones... they won medals! The tricky part would be in the way they "retired" and how they all ended up as (failed) police officers... we already saw Dongjoo's fall from grace thanks to his own greedy coach and Jonghyun's apparent retirement due to trauma (?) so I guess we can expect similar backstories from the others. I'm particularly curious about Jae Hong. I love SangYi and Bogum but He's like my fav so far... He is there for all of them and intervenes to avoid trouble. I laughed so hard when he was internalizing they were the new PR team rofl He sounded so mad but resigned to his faith rofl Hanna confused me for a sec because I was like "ok, she doesnt like DJ because she's interested in JH or she's Not interested in either of them..period" but then she's doing all these "regret" faces like she didnt want to say what she said to him and stuff after she told our puppy she wouldn't like him ever like what's her game? Then when he apparently backed off, she looks surprised and seems to miss him... like ??? one thing is not wanting her personal and professional lives to mix and everyone talking about it, for example, but like this, she comes off as cruel and dumb... That tsundere act is not my cup of tea tbh. I hope they tone down a bit the Captain's antics... he comes off as incompetent at every turn... I know its mainly for the slapstick comedy but really... please, show us why he is in charge! rn, he looks like someone that got to where he is for kissing up to his superiors not skills...

Heo Sung-tae dominates the screen, and Man-sik is so main character coded that I don't know why he's not higher billed in the cast (he's listed fifth). He has chemistry with Park Bo-gum as a buddy cop genre, but the two characters with the best chemistry are Man-sik and Chief Hwang. They play off each other really well. I know this show is called "Good Boy," but how awesome would it have been to see Heo Sung-tae vs. Oh Jung-se? Speaking of whom, I wish they hadn't introduced Joo-young as the big bad so early. The cliffhanger with Dong-ju finding the driver's watch would've had more impact if that was the first time we had met Joo-young.
It's odd how the other officers ostracize our athletes. Unless you're Michael Phelps or Usain Bolt, you can't make a living off of being an Olympian. Who cares if they got in through special recruitment? They're risking their lives just like the rest of them. It would've made more sense if they hate Dong-ju because they thought he doped, or they hate Han-na because they're jealous that she's the agency's poster girl.
My new favorite OST is "Time Lapse" by JUNNY. Such a smart directing choice to match the scene with the lyrics. When he sang, "너의 미소가 (your smile)" right as Park Bo-gum smiles. In their flashback, Han-na totally looks like she liked Dong-ju, so I wonder what made her date Jong-hyeon.
A big thanks for recapping, @Unit!

I absolutely loved it!— the first episode was a bit uneven in terms of pacing and too much exposition, but ep 2 more than made up for it. The fight scenes were fantastic, especially Dong Ju's with the UV paint, so stylish!
I really enjoyed the humor, especially the scene with Man Sik who accidentally took hallucinogens — that moment had me laughing out loud. Totally unhinged in the best way.
The former athletes are each compelling in their own right, and I’m really looking forward to seeing their emotional wounds revealed and their healing journey.
The good boy despite his sweetness was quite intense in how he chased after Ha Na - a bit pushy with those lingering stares but somehow it still felt emotionally sincere.
Damn, Lee Sang Yi is hot!

I loved the opening episodes of JTBC’s GOOD BOY (Amazon Prime Video). The editor deserves a special award for the last 10 minutes or so of episode one where all 5 of the athletes now police officers displayed their athleticism and physicality in individually and simultaneously taking on the bad guys. A special note has to be made of Park Bo-gum’s fight. It was the best kdrama fight in years.
One of my favorite scenes (after PBG’s fight) was when Hanna (Kim So-hyun) leveled her rifle and shot the Police Commissioner in the chest! She did what probably most cops working under this guy would have loved to have done one time or another. That should instantly make he a legend in the force.

I usually love shows like this (Flex X Cop, Chief Inspector, etc) where a disparate group of people come together as a team. But this one kind of fell flat for me and felt a bit all over the place. The comedy especially, is too cringe for my taste...
The team hasn't come together yet, and are right now, not really working as one. I guess the first 2 eps were more for exposition?
My favourite characters are the shooter and the fencer, PBG's boxer comes off too childish for her, and doesn't really sell the romance to me (I totally didn't mind the UV painted shower though 😂- so gratuitous, but so hot) Wrestler chief is a bit too silly, though I did snort out my coffee at his ecstasy fueled antics, and I sometimes forgot there's a fifth team member even oops.
The action scenes, now, are where it shone... Especially the sequence at Ha Na's house. As I was watching, I was trying to remember a similar scene, and it struck me that I may have seen it in the movie Hanna with Saiorse Ronan (I may be wrong, but I know I've seen this shooter holed up in a cabin *somewhere*) ... The similar names struck me as funny too! It's a great film for anyone interested though!
I wish it had been an episodic procedural, with one over-arching back story, but let's see. I wonder which direction it will go, since Big Bad has already been revealed.
Still, it's a decent time-pass show, and I'll probably continue to watch.
Even if only for Lee Sang Yi whose Clark Kent avatar in this one is super hot LoL (now maybe I should put Bloodhounds on my list... Is it too gory?)

Thanks for the recap @unit
Well this has way more violence and police corruption than Crash which I was comparing it to as the only other action/comedy I have been able to watch through to the end. I think the humour and the other characters like Gyeongil’s mum and the neighbourhood restaurant crew balance out the darker elements of the drama so I should be able to stay with this one too.
It is so disappointing to have the chief more concerned about appearance so he can keep his job than actually making his area a safer place on his watch. His physical assaults on Manshik are reminiscent of Miseang, how is this still the go to strategy to represent poor leadership and people skills in a 2025 drama?
I am struggling with how disrespectful everyone is to the athletes when they clearly have the skills that demonstrate dedication in bucket loads. The petty jealousy is annoying to watch.
I like the athletes’ unit and look forward to them getting some recognition as they grow closer and prove they are the ones that are actively making a difference to improve the safety of the district.
Side note: someone stabs you with some dirty metal object and draws blood wouldn’t you be in the queue to get that seen to as a means to avoid infection?
