Weekly Squee #8

Welcome to your weekly chat space for all things that bring out the squee. With plenty of spaces to vent and share about dramas — good, bad, or ugly — this thread is dedicated to that uniquely positive punch of excitement brought on by unexpected cameos, the Episode-8 first kiss, and all other too-close encounters by an OTP.

Consider it a cozy place to sit back, take a breather, and open up about the latest drama moment that sent you into a foot-stomping, mouth-covering fit of squeals.

And if you’re squeeing about non-drama-related stuff, hey, throw it in there. We could all use a happy story and rush of feels to keep us smirking throughout the day.

So, what are you squeeing about this week?

Beware of spoilers below!

I can't believe this! I've been waiting for this board to come up, but I have never been first before!
My squee at the moment is all about Weak Hero Class. I completely surprised myself at how much I loved this drama - both seasons. I never thought that I would be able to watch it because of the bullying and violence, but the friendships made the drama. And, I was so drawn to each character and how they supported each other that I could get through the stressful parts. I loved the actors, the art direction, the writing, and the OST. Just all around so well done. It's hard for me to separate the seasons as I watched them together and there are so many positives about each season. I think my heart is with season 1 and I am definitely on team SuHo/Sieun.
OK, I'll try to sop going on about this. Now, I'm trying to figure out what to watch now. I really, really need to watch TANGERINES, but I might need a lighthearted rom-com first..... will take suggestions for a good binge watch.
Happy week to all.

WHC1 and 2 are totally squee worthy because of the funny and endearing friendship scenes. I'm glad you loved them!

I came to squee about Resident Playbook, the whole of the drama. I went in with high expectations because you know, it's the Shin PD creation but was quite disappointed with episode 1 and almost thought of dropping. Not to mention the constant comparison by folks to Hospital Playlist which was quite infuriating because I just wanted to enjoy the show.
Great acting and great sub-stories amongst the story. Last week episodes cemented my love for the series and I appreciate wherever the story is heading to. And Yes, to the last scene in episode 8, the bus scene, it was heart-warming and a major cause of my squeeing this week. I can't remember how many times I've rewatched that part.

In this camp with you, though I fell in love with the show from episode 1. I haven't cried so much in a drama in a long while. The women centred stories are so incredibly moving to me. And just lovely.

Rise of Phoenixes. I have watched 29 episodes so far and there is no romance yet BUT there are some scenes involving the ML and the FL which made me hold my breath. Very sensual.

They really nailed the slow burn romance in this one. Episode36 is a funny one but also has some memorable scenes that I absolutely adore between them.
I loved everything about it, the king's games, the battle of the brothers for the throne, the romance. I don't think I have seen anything that matches it in cdramas in terms of pacing and dialogue, most of them jump fast through the stories and I get lost in translation. I watched even the Nirvana in Fire and it didn't feel the same although it has some similar elements.

I'm really enjoying RiseOP.
Nirvana in fire is still on my list.

I see I enjoy these "serious and older" c-dramas more than the recent ones.
My other favorites are Longest Day in Chang'an (2019) and Joy of Life (2019 too).
But the tense scenes and well written dialogues in Rise of Phoenixes are impressive.

Squeeing about a classic this week: I’m currently rewatching EXTRAORDINARY ATTORNEY WOO, and - you guessed it - yesterday evening came across that scene again: Jun-ho placing his hand against Young-woo’s office door’s window. 🥹🫠🫠🥰
A marvel.

And I’m still squeeing about our imogi & shaman. Somehow I’m convinced the daughter “they” had (famous cameo of LOVE NEXT DOOR FL’s child actress) in FL’s foreboding dream must definitely be called Imogen. 😂

That hand scene is great, but for me the one in that drama I can’t forget happens earlier when he is approaching her to see if her heart races even when they aren’t touching. It is so slow and deliberate and the dialogue there is perfection. Even just remembering it now I’m holding my breath hahaha!

I *may* have watched that scene a few times too many, too hahah. I love that they have a "couple song", also on current infinite loop.

I have been rewatching from Ep 1, and I realised they've actually been teasing that song all through. Ep 6 was the first time they played they whole thing.

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon! I'd never seen it before. If you fast forward through anything involving gangsters, serial killers, or puerile homophobic humor, you get one of the best love stories (so far). And he might be my new favorite ML. He's smitten from the first, but he just keeps her near him with one excuse or another and lets her take the time to figure out that she likes him, too. And he admires her for all the things she's insecure about. There's something oddly graceful about the pacing of the romance in an otherwise pretty crude and unsubtle show.

Hahaha totally agree with this assessment. It’s not a fantastic show overall (by the end I was SO sick of the gangsters) but I watched every OTP scene twice! Also loved when Min-hyuk tells Bong-soon’s mom to keep visiting fortune tellers until one gives her a favorable reading for them 😂

Oooh yesssss!!! His new drama—for which he will begin filming for at the end of May— has officially been announced 😁

The network of this drama of his and his soon-to-air drama— YOUKU— also released a good handful of drama posters for their upcoming drama line-up. My guess is that this is them pre-heating their summer drama line-up 😍
The post just says “new dramas of 2025, but really, what’s left of big drama season for 2025? Just the summer vacation season

Being called bot here is a badge of honor, don't worry))) Also, one tiny YT link is nothing, even site's filter usually don't get triggered by those.

Really? LOL 😂
I suspect the one calling me out was actually the real bot. It happened for a few weeks in a row every time I’d post a YT link to a Xiao Zhan vlog or livestream, and the person would have the same copy & paste comment on my posts

How creepy! Might be a lame troll too.

I watched it a while back. Though I loved the FL from Love between Fairy and Devil, I didn’t think this one was half decent as that one. So it was a reluctant drop. I think I watched like almost 20 eps.

What's in a Name?

Naming these posts Weekly Squee makes me overthink it too much. I'm watching a drama, Saturday is too far away, I want to talk about it, but will it seem like I'm absolutely loving it if I write on the Squee post? Do I have to write a disclaimer first that I'm just moderately enjoying it? How do I approach it if I'm actually disliking one aspect and I want to talk about that? I think and think until it's Friday and the Open Thread goes up and now, well, I've waited the whole week, I can wait until tomorrow's WWW.
Sigh. The problems of an overthinker looking for a neutral space in the middle of the week.

I preferred the more neutral ‘Fan Space’ for a title. The March 17-23, 2025 edition of Fan Space had over 200 comments fwiw.

I agree. I have been put off even Reading this thread, because my automatic reaction is 'urk' . It's not that I don't enjoy a good squee sometimes- I do- but I like a mix. A bit of reality with my sentiment.
( And I'm only replying to this because I saw your comment come up- I still have not read the thread)
(Maybe we start have a minor 'fan space' thread inside of this each week?)

I get what you mean! We need a post weekend space to talk about stuff and Fan Space is more aptly named. I wonder why they dropped that over this.

I totally get you, the name is somehow limiting in content... and I think OT and WWW are indeed too close too each other (plus after so many years I have the impression OT already established a specific style). Starting a new thread on Monday wasn't a bad idea, I just would go with something even more neutral than Fan Space.... something like Chat Space... or Chatwall 🙂🙂 (Yes, I miss Fanwall as well 😁 ).

On the other hand, I think perhaps the overlords went for the change and chose on purpose a name to give positive vibes... to also keep the conversations in a more positive air?

Nowhere else to post this so here’s a Washington Post article about the Haenyo of Jeju. The comments are also interesting and explain more that the article doesn’t and several haenyo-related documentaries in addition to some kdramas.
