Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (May 31, 2025)
by DB Staff
So, what are we all watching this week?
What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

Our Unwritten Seoul: Watching this drama made me think of the Drama Chat topic about dramas with amazing first episodes — because Our Unwritten Seoul’s premiere episode grabbed me right away. By the end of Episode 1 and the pinky swear, I was blown away by how invested I was in the story with what was essentially 90 minutes of prologue. Each storyline was well-crafted, and I loved the choice to pick one twin as the narrator — I wasn’t expecting that, and it had a great result. I mean, living in Mi-ji’s head and experiencing her pressures, only for the tables to get turned when she re-meets her sister? I just loved the whole reversal of Mi-ji being envious of Mi-rae, to then doing anything to protect her. I cannot wait to see how these sisters undergo their swap! Also, Jinyoung’s storyline was just AHHH. It was played perfectly from the start with the lip-reading scene, but like the twins’ storyline, as it deepened it just got better and better. I literally love this drama, and I’m only one episode in. (Shout out to the amazing supporting cast, too; so many favorites here!)
DaebakGrits
Nine Puzzles: I didn’t realize until I started this drama that I needed a murder mystery in my life. Yi-na and Han-saem are a fun duo, and I especially love actor Sohn Seok-gu’s facial expressions when his character reacts to Yi-na’s quirkiness. It’s been fun trying to piece together the clues along with the characters, but I think my opinion of this drama could change drastically depending on the ending and whether or not the reveal has a satisfying payoff. I thought, for sure, the killer was going to be the older-than-average “rookie” cop, Choi San, but after Episode 9, that theory is shot. Instead, creepy Dr. Hwang appears to be the only viable suspect left in our pool of recurring characters, and I’ll be a bit disappointed if the creepy guy with an obvious interest in Yi-na turns out to be the killer. It would be more interesting if Dr. Lee was the killer, but all the flashbacks of Yi-na seeing the killer suggest it’s a man.
Our Unwritten Seoul: I’m a sucker for the twins/doppelgangers swapping places trope, so it was pretty much a given that I would watch this drama. But, dang, I did not expect to love it so much so soon! Glad I have a new show to look forward to on the weekends.
Dramaddictally
Our Unwritten Seoul: I love it. I thought I was watching this for Jinyoung but I was so wrong. The story is insanely captivating, with clues dropping at just the right moments to fill in details and leave me with new questions. I was worried it might be gimmicky with the twins, but instead it’s hitting all the right emotional marks (I laughed, I cried, I felt like I got punched in the gut) – and we’re only on Week 1! All signs point to healing by the end of this drama, and I can’t wait to see how it rolls out.

COMPLETED
Heavenly Ever After - Felt like it lost its way on the road to heaven. If the character of Som-I didn't exist (as I believe was the plan originally), this would be a much better show. Still worth it for Kim Hye-ja's sparkling performance and a truly moving look at love that transcends time and even lifetimes.
ONGOING
The Haunted Palace - Old man Choi ended up being even shadier than I expected. I guess our King is about to find out some unpleasant truths about his own ancestor as well. Still mad about Bi-bi but everyone helping Kang Chul deal with his grief was nice.
Second Shot at Love - Liked the straightforward confession(s) though the twist on why he really cut her off was sad. Wish we'd be spared the baseball-cap-wearing-stalker storyline.
Tastefully Yours - Another show that lost its way - never have I wanted YYS off my screen more. It's only 10 episodes - why not focus more on our leads instead of all this past drama.
STARTED
Nine Puzzles - All caught up and this is totally Kim Da-mi's show. It also has some excellent cliffhangers (Ep. 7 for instance).
Our Unwritten Seoul - Managed to shock me with that fall from the window. Here's hoping things get better for both our sisters with the swap - more healing, less trauma 🤞.
WATCHLIST
Oh My Ghost Clients and Good Boy.
C-DRAMAS
Completed The Prisoner of Beauty. Despite some pacing issues and the usual unnecessary deaths, this ended up being surprisingly good? The process of moving from hatred to forgiveness and love was shown well. And miracle of miracles - LYN didn't die!
Started Be Passionately in Love. It's been a while since I watched a Wang An-yu show but he's still great at emoting through his eyes. Liking the show as a whole too - funnier than I expected.
Kept postponing Zang Hai Zhuan so I could give it the attention it deserves. Now I'll have to binge and catch-up over the weekend 😅.

Re Second Shot of Love: Agreed!! The mustache twirling obvious villain is so unnecessary.
Re Tastefully Yours: I don't fully dislike YYS in this, I just wish his cameo was much much shorter. lol

I just thought YYS's brand of earnest felt particularly grating for this character. Maybe a lesser known actor playing the ex would have been better coz they'd definitely give him less screen time lol

Tastefully Yours: Aww we are through the halfway point and onto the angst. The deviation seems so random to me for such a short drama. However, KHN and GMS have good chemistry and are cute together. Obviously, the ex is a user and loser, sigh. Not excited for the angst but how will Yeon Joo trust again. Everyone she trusts just goes and betrays her, poor woman.
Second Shot at Love: I appreciate the writer trying to make her drama light, but getting sober is hard and sometimes it is good to show how hard it is. The sister relapsing was good to show, but the show seemed to play the dad getting the shakes for laughs, and it isn’t really funny. However, I am enjoying the banter between our leads. I also like that they are getting to know each other better as adults.
Pump up the healthy Love: Well, that took a turn. That was unexpected, I am still not sure what sickness she had, someone said cancer, but that wasn’t really clear. Also, this drama took a long route to getting Hyun Joong to realize he might like Mi Ran. It is episode 10 in a 12er. Well, I guess it is a good thing we only have 2 episodes left, because then the focus is only on the romance.
Oh My Ghost Clients: The first episode was fine. I was hoping it would be funnier, but that can still come, so I will try the next few to see if I like it.
Our Unwritten Seoul: I’m looking forward to seeing more from Mi Rae’s perspective. Also, please please please I beg writer, please let Mi Ji come clean to Ho Su, so we can move on from that.
Good Boy: This looks so fun and I hope it is.

I guess this will follow a ghost-of-the-week formula. I was shocked by the ghost's story in episode two and had to fast forward. Hopefully, not every ghost story will be this hard to watch.

It wasn't grisly because we didn't see much, but if you have even a little imagination, it was pretty awful. Just evil, it completely changed the mood of the drama.

I almost got whiplash from the change of tone. I think they went a bit too far. They could have just left it as an industrial accident due to ignoring safety regulations, and that would have been enough. The emotional punch from the mother-son relationship would have been sufficient without over-laying it with the rest.

Eagle Brothers: A custody battle?🤦🏽🤦🏽🤦🏽🤦🏽🤦🏽🤦🏽. I have better use of my screentime.
It is Always Midnight in Hagwon Episode 13: Changed this one's watching schedule to once a week enable me watch for longer.
It went south so quickly. Inasmuch as I loved Hye-jin's decision to forgo her materials, I didn't appreciate the push behind it. And now it has bitten her in the back.
The award for wrong timing of love declarations goes to Jun-ho. It is self serving and kinda manipulative at this point. And it is patronizing that not one character is telling him "is that what you're prioritizing at this moment?" The guy has a way of making a situation about himself.
The Haunted Palace Episode 12-13: What just happened? Who's in Gap's body? Gap? Kangcheori? Or both?
Nine Puzzles 1-6: This is nowhere near puzzling for me. I can't predict this yet if not at all but I don't see the puzzle in it.
Oh My Ghost Clients: 🤣🤣🤣🤣. I laughed more in my head than I did vocally. It is good.
Another Kim Dae-myung cameo 🤭🤭🤭🤭. HP viewers can relate.

Nine Puzzles (4-9): So many questions, and I suspect pretty much everyone at this point. The only one I'm convinced is innocent right now is Yi-na. Looking beyond the police, there's also something very suspicious about those psychiatrists. Hopefully the last 2 episodes wrap things up well, and we get some satisfying answers to our questions.
Our Unwritten Seoul (1-2): I always end up calling this Unknown Seoul (which I'm pretty sure was the original title), and I also think I kinda prefer that title? Regardless, I enjoyed these first 2 episodes. I really just want the best for these sisters, and I really hope they both find success and happiness in whatever it is they will end up doing. And if we can somehow mess things up for everybody at Mi-rae's company, I'll gladly take that as a bonus.
The Flower in Prison (43-47): Was a bit frustrated by episodes 45-46 as it just felt like the heroes were sitting back doing very little so that the villains could play catch up to the main story, but luckily episode 47 seemed to get things back on track. Tae-won finally found out Oknyeo is a princess, while Yun overplayed his hand regarding the guard that Oknyeo's mom ran away with all those years ago. I guess they do say that pride comes before the fall? Also, I obviously can't forget Tae-won's "may I protect you as your man" confession to Oknyeo. Yeah, that one made my knees buckle. Anyway, 4 episodes left! I'm expecting chaos, so they better deliver!

Live Watches
The Haunted Palace: (through ep 13) I think it was smart of the show to bring back Gab before the last minute - hopefully this will give us a chance to resolve some things before we head into the finale. I get why Gab thinks Gangcheol stole his life, but I maintain he died fair and square! And in more optimistic news: my long-awaited bromance between the King and Gangcheol is officially off and running!
Tastefully Yours: (through ep 6) I probably think that all female leads’ ex-boyfriends are the absolute worst, but I really mean it this time! I don’t even mind the corporate struggles as long as they are accompanied by found family restaurant business and believable romance. We still have four more episodes, Show, we can do it (할 수 있어)!
Dear Hongrang: (finished!) Things got wild, but (maybe because it was a book first) it all still felt intentional to me, which I appreciate. Jo Bo-ah went a long way to redeeming herself for me, and Lee Jae-uk was phenomenal as usual. I especially loved his confession scene - he had so much self-loathing that he couldn’t imagine his feelings were reciprocated, and the whole scene was just delicious. In the end this show kinda just made me want to watch Alchemy of Souls again!
Recent Dramas
The Art of Negotiation: (through ep 2) This is more fun than I was expecting, based on the premise. I get what everyone meant about the soundtrack, but it already seems a bit improved in episode 2 so hopefully it will be a little less booming from now on. It’s fun to see Lee Je-hoon in a role like this, since everything else I’ve seen with him has been action or action-adjacent. Ready for more!
Older Dramas
Weak Hero Class 1: (through ep 2) My partner and I started this show this week (since we finished Andor) and I like where we’ve come so far. Si-eun seemed already at a breaking point before anything happened and I find him super interesting. I hope they make the bully in his class a bit more complex though. Right now he’s trying to crush Si-eun’s spirit for literally no reason and that’s not super interesting.

Weak Hero Class 1: It's not a valid reason, but the bully Yeong-bin's reason for targeting Si-eun is because Si-eun is ranked first, while the bully is always second, so he's jealous of Si-eun and thinks he's rude, like when he dismissed his (insincere) apology, and pretentious.

Yeah, I kind of got that impression from the first two episodes, but he wasn't even second, Yeong-bin was third, so his fixation on this one other person didn't make as much sense to me. But then, I guess bullying doesn't really have to make sense (and shouldn't make sense to most people) 🤷♀️

Yes to the bromance in The Haunted Palace! One of the best things in the story is that we have this actor, I believe his name is Kim Ji-hoon?, as the king. And we have an absolutely marvelous acter Yoon Sang-Jae playing Gancheori and Gap. He did the role justice. He’s on my radar now.
And I maintain that I adore Bona. 😘

EAGLE BROS (Ep 33-34) For the most part, the show is focusing too much on the really BAD story lines, neglecting the one love line viewers want to see, and keeping the leads romance awkward to mellow.
OUR UNWRITTEN SEOUL (Ep 1-2) Park Bo Young stated that her role as twins would be like playing four characters after they switch lives (but she admitted in an interview she only got paid for one.) It is a typical twin-switch drama but I don’t know if this series is going to break any new ground. It is not offensive by any means. Park is handling the parts well. I liked the teen actors more than the adult ones. I don’t care for this production packing in 16 episode runtimes into 12 episodes.
TASTEFULLY YOURS (Ep. 5-6) This week was a real downturn in the story telling. The sudden left turn to pack Yeon-Joo with a backstory, an ex-boyfriend, a cuisine scandal and dying mentor lost all momentum for the folksy reality of the Jungjae family, which by the way, is still broke but magically has money to rebuild, re-open and serve a mixed-family wedding event in just two days. The logical errors in simple plot points are more grating than scraping daikon on a box grater.

The calculation was $5k to rebuild with festival gimbap ingredients but BeonWoo blew the budget by buying expensive meats. By a reasonable calculation they did not have enough money to rebuild in such a quick time.

They also did very well at the festival itself, selling out on the first day. Also there was no indication that they sold at a lost. On the second day they also did well and used basic gimbap so inexpensive ingredients.
So the prize money, the profit from the festival and the increased sales (it's mentioned) is why they started doing well.

I agree that the side couple stories are out of balance in EAGLE BROTHERS but I would also note that Weekender audiences want a certain level of makjang in the drama- and it is in the fourth brother's story that we get it. Third brother's story could have been omitted entirely without damage to the drama.

Watching
Two older dramas are my joyful watches right now: In Need of Romance 3 and High School King of Savvy are great fun so far. I forget how spicy and vivacious "older" dramas are!
Finished
Backstreet Rookie: This was so sweet!! It was occasionally hilarious, but mostly surprisingly heart-warming. The FL, Saet-byeol was luminous. She brought vitality (and chaos) to the ML. The ML, Ji Chang-wook, is a good actor (obviously), and he's also hot (obviously), so it's fun seeing him play a "loser." He may look like a loser, but he's a kind and honorable person, making it easy to see why the FL carried a torch for him for so long, while also questioning why the selfish, snobby SFL is with him in the first place. I thought the ML and FL had excellent chemistry, and I loved their relationship and how they were truly good for each other. But this isn't really a rom-com; it's more about personal growth (it reminded me a bit of Hello, Me!, but more upbeat). The ML's relationship with the SFL dissolves because she's insecure and not proud of him, and he gets to move on. But the focus is on the FL. What she most wants is for the ML to know that she's a good person, and for him to trust her good intentions after some initial bad impressions. What I most loved, though, was her relationship with the ML's mom. The FL had to take on a parent role far too early to raise her sister, even giving up her own chance to finish high school. Seeing the FL receive motherly love and care from the ML's mom made me cry. The mom's (and the ML's) words and acts of love and encouragement for Saet-byeol at the right times were SO SO NICE. She learns to rely on others and not resort to violence to solve all her problems. Don't watch it as a rom-com, watch it as a sweet story of personal growth. It was an excellent warm-hearted watch in between more stressful dramas. I loved it!!

Disaster is Always By My Side is EXCELLENT and screaming for a drama adaptation (same author as See You in My 19th Life). Onsaemiro Never Changing is fine but more angsty. I appreciate that it's not just funny, but also has an interesting plot. You're so right - it was truly charming and heartfelt, and I also really liked the soundtrack. I feel like this past week's watches have upended my top-ten list; Happiness has made it to number 7 (!!!), and I'm considering putting Backstreet Rookie closer to my top ten, because it was so heartfelt and meaningful! We've talked about the influence of live-watching on perspective, and I think this drama is a great example of that... I think if I had watched this live, I would have expected it to be a "normal" rom-com and been disappointed it wasn't. Watching it now, I could enjoy it on the drama's own terms. I feel a little left out of ongoing conversations by not live watching most things currently, but I also think I'm going to enjoy things more when I watch at my own pace later on. I'm waiting in hopeful anticipation for positive endings for the dramas I have my eye on - Healthy Love, Tastefully Yours, Second Shot at Love, and Unwritten Seoul. But I think other genres (i.e., less romance, less introspection) are better live watches for me, so I'm going to give Ghost Clients and Good Boy a try this weekend!

I'm so surprised about Happiness! I tried it last year and the zombie thing just didn't sit well. Perhaps I have to try again.
The silver lining about binge watching later is that there are always beanies up for a discussion about a show after the fact 😀
Despite saying I was going to do more binge watching, I've gotten caught up in a lot of live watching again, exacerbated by all the free time I had this week to watch. I'm actually burned out at the moment and thinking about just pacing my way through what I've started this coming month and not starting anything new for a while.
I totally agree on non romance/healing dramas being more fun to watch live though!

I'm surprised too 😅 I think it's the power of the OTP!!!
Yes I'm glad there are always conversations ready even with older dramas! Live watching is definitely fun, though, if you have the time for it. Sometimes I'll "taste test" the first one or two episodes of something when it starts to air, but then save it for later, and can look forward to it more knowing I liked the intro episodes. But it's particularly overwhelming when so many new things (in genres I like) start at the same time. How to prioritize and order them!! 😅

OK, I'll have to pick this drama up again now that I see so many glowing endorsements. I was one of the viewers that dropped it because I felt very uncomfortable with the brash high school student pursuing an adult (at least that's my recollection of the early episodes as it's been awhile).

To the best of my memory, she's only a high school student for the flashback of when they meet; the rest of the drama takes place when she's older (twenty-ish?).

That is right- this is NOT a story of a man who is seducing an underage child. The romance take place when the FL is in her twenties- but remembers the ML as the man of her dreams. There was absolutely zero inappropriate behavior when she was underage. However, that earlier situation means that her infatuation with him is actually a case of a wise rather than a foolish heart because she accurately sees his worth.

Yes, as Hopeful mentioned, that was only the very start of their story. It was a number of years later that they met again and she was in her 20's at the point. Their relationship works because the characters have the same level of emotional maturity. They just fit well together and complement each other's strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes an age gap is uncomfortable, but I didn't find that at all here. It's baked into the story in a logical way that makes sense with the characters.

YES absolutely agree!!!! They balanced and complemented each other so well, as you describe!!! When she meets his family, she just clicks and fits with him and them so well... it just feels like they have a solid foundation for their relationship in a way that's more believable than in a lot of other dramas.

June 1, 2025 at 2:27 PM
The age gap is not so great as to be inherently unreasonable plus the younger FL has had to grow up far more than a typical girl of her age. Emotionally she and the ML are actually at the same level.
One of the things that I also appreciated was that our FL truly obeys the ethics of dating. As much as she truly desires the ML she does nothing about it until has clearly cut off the ML. BUT once that has occurred the gloves come off and she fights for her man- even if the 2FL changes her mind. The rule is clear- once the 2FL discards the ML and our FL claims him the 2FL is now trying to be the other woman and that is now what is unacceptable.
By now you have probably gotten the idea that at the heart of the webtoon and the drama is the idea that women have far more agency in romantic matters than society has often been willing to admit.

A number of us remained uncomfortable with the romance whose roots were laid when the female lead was in high school and the man an adult even if it didn’t takeoff just after she turned legal. It didn’t help that at 20 KYJ still had her baby fat while the 30-something JCW looked much older (albeit very handsome.)
Yeah, it’s legal. Yeah, it happens IRL. But the best depictions portray the complexities of such age-gap relationships when one partner is coming out of adolescence, relationships that are often rooted in trauma and vulnerability. It might be her “agency” to pursue him as some say, but you’d think we’d stop propagating fairy tales in which school girls grow up so they can partner with men old enough to be their fathers.
Jill Ciment’s two memoirs, first a defense and the second a nuanced revaluation of such a relationship, are worth a read.

Your description of Backstreet Rookie has put it back on my watchlist. Really sounds like I'd love it! It's been going on and off my watchlist because for some reason JCW hasn't made an impression on me from the dramas I've seen so far (and no I haven't seen Healer so that could be one reason why haha). I didn't finish Suspicious Partner, and Samdal-ri I liked but it didn't make me want to see more of his shows. But now I'm thinking of making it my next watch as I'm looking for something light and romantic. Thanks for that! :D

I hope you enjoy it if you give it a try! I will say that it's not really so much about romance (and there isn't a lot of it), but it goes deeper than just flirtiness in building a strong, supportive connection between the leads. I thought they had great chemistry (including comedic chemistry) together. Also, I'd definitely encourage you to get to Healer someday - it's a classic!!!

More than three years ago (when I was quite new in Dramaland) I watched the first two episodes of Healer and I thought the humour was quite cringey, tbh.
So I left it on hold but I know I want to watch it now that I'm totally used to Korean humour (which is not always cringey at all. In fact it is very similar to Spanish humour).
The same happened with Reply 1988. I think I started it too early, it wasn't the moment yet.

I loved both Healer and Reply 1988 so much that I rewatched them a couple of times. The second asian drama that I watched after TROP was Princess Ki (I had no idea at that time about the asian drama world) and I liked him so much that I looked for more dramas with him. So Healer was next and I never looked back. Reply 1988 is truly a classic, it will warm your heart and make you appreciate more the past and what we lost in the last 20 years. Life was simpler but better. I liked the second leads love story a lot more as well as the friendship among the adults and the "kids".
I got stuck on ep 7 f Moonlover and I don't think I will ever go back to finish it ever. It is so childish, there is no hook there to catch me. IU acting is terrible there and the ML only acts like a brute. It's just stupid, forgive my bluntness. Compare the intense fighting among the brothers from TROP with their kindergarten behaviour in this one. And how Ning Yi was tough but also so charming with Feng Zhiwei but here for 7 episodes we got nothing.
I am late for Twinkling Watermelon, left it at 4th, I got so busy this month that I could only put myself to sleep with Prisoner of Beauty and barely had time to keep up with The Haunted Palace, watching 10 minutes here and there. Can't wait to get back into their rocking world again.

Watching Moonlovers after The Rise of Phoenixes (as I am doing) doesn't do any favor to the show. The difference in quality is too big to compare them.

I loved BACKSTREET ROOKIE, which had only one flaw in a side character that was mindlessly carried over from the original webtoon. Other than that, it was as close to a perfect gem of a romcom as you can get.
I too loved the ML's mom - and how she subverted some tropes. Probably my favorite is when the Chaebol mom of the 2FL came to her to say that they had discovered the sacrifice that the ML had once made for the 2FL and how, therefore the ML really was good enough for the 2FL after all. The response of ML's mom: Your Chaebol daughter is not good enough for the ML.

Nine Puzzles: 8.1 (ep 6 / 9) I won't know whether to like or hate the story until I see how it ends, but I've been enjoying Kim Da-mi's quirky performance.
Haunted Palace: 8.0 Good but not great -- except perhaps in comparison to Hongrang. Our sageuk face-off this season has a clear winner.
Our Unwritten Seoul: 8.0
Tastefully Yours: 7.5
DearDead Hongrang: 6.0 (ep 7 / 11) Show proved it was a kdrama by fading in the 2nd half. The love between bio-daughter and fake son is not believable or well done -- expected ONLY because kdrama casting works like that. But what really bugged me was in ep 9 when adopted-son asked the father to disown him so he could marry bio-daughter. I'm not 100% sure about Korea back then, but I think it was like Japan -- if you had a daughter and needed a male heir but wanted to keep the succession to your descendants, you would adopt a son and have him marry the daughter. Show has it backwards because it lets modern attitudes interfere with the history (?).Oh My Ghost Clients: 7.0

I am not looking forward to next week because I am sure we are going to have drama amongst the sister and her best friend because she is not ‘good enough’ for her younger brother. An Incurable Case of Love: I thought I was long over the days of watching a drama adapted from a shuojo manga but I forgot that my introduction to kdramas was exactly that (BOF). I loved this show and gobbled it up in a few days, sth I rarely do now. That suggests I really miss the old drama format, it kept us waiting for next episodes. I also miss tsunderes, it helps that here it was someone as hot as Satoh Takeru.
First Love: I tried watching this after incurable for Satoh Takeru but honestly, I'm not in the mood for anything moody or serious, might come back to it later.
The Prisoner of Beauty: In the minority that didn't like the direction this show took. You have an enemies to lovers setup, you can do better, make it more meaty. Instead this was a romcom. The first five episodes were so much better than the rest of the show.

All very good points, which I conveniently forgot with just a few minutes of their rosy love story in beautiful surroundings at the end! You're right it was all idiocy leading up to that, but I don't think she remembered her past at that point and for some reason he decided not to deceive her? Or something like that? That's arguably noble, I guess.

I caught a bad cold last weekend 😩 but it meant lots of drama watching this week as I haven't been up for much else.
Last night I fell asleep after 15 minutes of Lost in Starlight, which was released on Netflix yesterday. On the fence about finishing it. Interested to hear if any beanies watched it yet?
STILL WATCHING
The Haunted Palace. I continue to love this, but I'm ready for the finale. It's amazing that the ending still isn't obvious, so, fingers crossed we get a creative and memorable one next week.
24-Hour Health Club. This actually might have worked as a 16-ep'er (or at least 14). What the short episode count!
Tastefully Yours. Feeling kind of meh about this week's episodes. The story isn't jelling. Too much crammed into too few episodes?
Second Shot at Love. On the other hand, I'm loving this story, which I wasn't expecting 🩷 Gong Myung is fast becoming one of my favorite actors. His emotional delivery is spot on. The crazy father back story is a bummer though... it would have been better for the ML to have a relatable reason for quitting drinking.
Our Unwritten Seoul. I'm genuinely surprised that I struggled to get through the opening week. It felt disjointed for some reason, and too gloomy. Mi Ji's whining voice was grating. Love the cast, so I'll give it another week. My reaction is likely due to my not feeling well.
Hot Spot j-drama. 3/10 eps watched. If you're a fan of American director Wes Anderson, this is for you! The humor is naunced/subtle, but the more you get into the flow with it, the more laugh out loud funnier it gets. Thank you beanies for the recommendation! (available on Netflix in the US)
The Prisoner of Beauty c-drama. 5 eps to go. It's been really satisfying. I'll comment more next week when I'm finished.
Youthful Glory c-drama. It's as basic as an historical romance gets, with little cleverness in the dialogue and weak direction. But it charms with its attractive cast, lively costumes, and creative background music. May not finish it.
Wishing everyone a great week! 😉

Hi Beanies! ☀️🏖️
What I am watching:
_ Haunted Palace (12 out of 16). I want to know what happens now after that cliffhanger in the last episode. Gap is back? Alive?
_ Moonlovers (2016). (13 out of 20). This show was a "must" for me. It had been on my list for three years. So finally I started it, but I'm kind of... disappointed? Disappointed mainly on the script but also on the terrible use of most songs (pop, rap, hip hop!) and editing. Only a pair of themes seem appropiate for this drama and are well used in the scenes, imo.
All the actors are good, and the instrumental soundtrack is very good too. The problem is probably mine, because I have not connected with this story. I'm barely feeling nothing for these characters. I'm rooting for Baek Ha (Nam Joo Hyuk), at least.
For many episodes I liked the Eighth Prince (a very very handsome Kang Ha Neul), but not enough to feel something for him.
That said, I can understand why so many people love this drama. That's why I say it must be a "me problem". Maybe I should have watched the Chinese original show instead.
_ Doom at your service (2 out of 16). An interesting start, but I'm confused with the the contract and the philosophy. A little messy.
_ C-drama Prisoner of Beauty (31 out of 36). Some episodes have very funny moments. I'm enjoying the comedy. Liu Yuning is so good at it! I am trying to avoid spoilers because the show ended two days ago but Viki is slowly releasing the last episodes. No episode today :/
What I finished:
_ Usotoki Rhetoric (2024). Highly recommend this j-drama. It was very cute and cozy.
_ Korean TV movie SF8: Blink (2020). Not very good, but I liked Ha Joon playing an AI.
_ Chinese mini drama Definitely not today (2021). Very good! Short, hooking dramedy. It told a serious/hard story, but the dark humour made it lighter.

Moon Lovers is very polarizing it seems. People either love it or don't get why others do. It definitely has its issues. It was one of the earliest k-dramas I watched, and closer to its original release date. I loved it at the time. But when I rewatched it this year, with so many more k-dramas watched since then, I have to admit I didn't love it as much. I tried the Chinese version but couldn't get past the first episode.

The Chinese version must be a tough nut to crack, but I suspect the script could be better.
While watching Moonlovers I'm all the time thinking that the potential of this story is huge, but I don't think the script is working. And the evolution of some characters feels very rushed.

Imo, directing was the worse offender in MOON LOVERS - PD clearly cared more about extreme closeups and forcing actors to diet than actually telling a cohesive story.

I'm not sure about the script, but I found the production quality too cheesy to enjoy. I know there are beanies who really love the Chinese version so it might be worth a try! The oldest c-drama I've watched is JOL, and virtually everything else is only 2-3 years old max, so I'm lacking in appreciation for what once was.

I highly recommend the Chinese version. It was the second C-drama I watched, and still one of the best, although it definitely isn't always a light, happy watch. The way it uses the actual history and culture of the early Qing dynasty is wonderful.

I'll keep that in mind. I don't rule out watching it, because as I said, I think the story has a lot of potential (which, in my opinion, the Korean version doesn't use well).

Also highly recommend the original cdrama Scarlet Heart. The CGI and the men's hairstyles are terrible, but the writing and acting are basically perfect. The female lead has far more intelligence and agency as well, and how it handles her knowledge of the future affecting history is terrific.

I can agree with your Moonlovers review. I finally watched it recently, also. I think maybe my problem was just all of the hype I had read for so long as it is typically a genre that I love. The song choices drove me crazy also. I did love it enough for the ending to crush me, and I came away with a huge crush on Lee Joong Gi, but also was very impressed by Nam Joo Hyuk (enough to make me maybe consider watching 25 21!) I'm glad I finally watched it, as I think it is one of those KDrama rite of passage dramas. 😊

Nam Joo Hyuk has a very cute character in Moonlovers. His gestures remind me a little of his character in Weightlifting Fairy (a drama I loved), maybe because it's from the same year.

Honestly, I thought I would enjoy it more; maybe I have not connected with the characters, or some things took me out of the show sometimes (the songs, the muppet show, the manga style drawings -super cute, but very modern). But I agree there are some really iconic scenes and moments, as the scene under the rain.

Tastefully yours (5&6) - Where are the restaurant and running a business shenanigans?! All the food bits are still great, but really disliking the unnecessary love triangle.
Our Unwritten Seoul (1&2) - I really wanted to start this after atleast 4-5 episodes were available but couldn’t stop myself. I feel like I’m going to love this series. I have a sibling I’m very close to, so I was quite emotional in several places in the first two episodes. I’ve actually not seen PBY in anything in a while (an accomplishment I know!) and I think she’s doing a great job with both the characters.
Signal (4/16) - Started this on recommendations of beanies and really glad I did! Timey wimey plots can be a hit and miss for me but so far it’s looking great. Lee Je Hoon’s performance is ... interesting, I’m waiting for it to settle a bit but Kim Hye Soo and Cho Jin Woong are fantastic.
The Tale of Lady Ok (14/16) - We’re back full circle to the opening scene! Fingers crossed for a happy ending although this show loves to throw tragedy at our protagonists. Speaking of, does the real husband ever show up, or are we supposed to forget he existed?
Non-kdrama
It’s been a while since I’ve seen anything that’s not k-drama but I binged Department Q and loved it. It’s a Scottish version of a typical Scandi noir which is a genre that I wouldn’t go anywhere near. However, it’s set in Edinburgh where I lived for several years and curiosity got the better of me. The show is really well written with excellent performances and really satisfying ending, excellent for a weekend binge!

The investigations are interesting. I read 1 and 2, started the 3rd.
But it's more the journey than the destination kind. For example, in the book 2, you know who are the bad guys, so no surprise, but it's the how the cops find the elements.
There are the point of view of the main cop but from the point of view of the victim/criminal too.
For the cop, he's not nice. He judges everybody and overall his women colleagues seem to be in f**ckable or not categories like the psy...

Viva la Vida Watching this movie (available on YouTube) starring the always adorable Teresa Li (kudos to her for showing herself without her usual perfect makeup) I thought about the usual reflection I have been making since I discovered Korean and Chinese entertainment. It's incredible how the West, the (alleged) cradle of religions and morality, produces garbage like "Dying for sex"; and for a similar topic, an atheist culture whose only God is the Communist Party manages to produce such a sweet, optimistic and humanist movie.
My Treasure Since Viki has fewer and fewer licenses for Chinese series in Europe, I signed up to iQiyi and I'm catching up on this series that I wanted to see years ago. Vicky Chen is really good and her relationship with her mother is touching and funny at the same time. Even though she's very young, she always manages to be credible, I wish her a future full of successes, even if it's unlikely that she'll have many important roles, since she doesn't respect the classic beauty canons.
Pump up the Healthy Love It's the funniest show of the year. I really don't understand why there are so many bad reviews.
This week I want to start watching Youthful Glory. Everyone speaks highly of this one and in my opinion the actress is one of the most gorgeous and sensual of the new generation. She was beautiful and stole the scene from the protagonist in Fake it till you make it.

VIVA LA VIDA is available on Viki for those of us in the US. I actually appreciated Teresa Li doing her part without the make-up- it actually added visual depth to her performance- just one additional added detail that helps to explain her receiving the Best Actress Award at the Golden Dragon Awards for her role in the film.

Haunted Palace (Ep 12) : If we get the imugi pearl back, can we just regrow Bibi? I really love how this drama just takes care of corrupt ministers - like a bartender cutting off a drunk patron. The head eunuch arranging for special snacks for the mourning Gang-cheol was so sweet.
Tastefully Yours (ep 1-4): Took about the 3rd episode to get on board. I really enjoy all the fun flourishes, details, and quips that you can miss if not paying attention. I really want that beef-rolled kimbap. I'm confused as to why the ML has no personal funds. Was he just using corporate money for personal stuff?
Demon Hunter's Romance (up to ep 29): Banxia's ex-fiance: if no one wants to marry him, can I have him? What a ray of sunshine! The snake demon story is so bittersweet and the actor did a fantastic job playing dual roles. Paused here since it sounds like I'll need to steel myself for the next 7 episodes.
Youthful Glory (ep 1-7) I really wanted to like it and it seems like something that I would like, but I'm just not feeling it at all.

Happy Saturday, Dragon Boat Festival and last day of spring, Beanies!
CHEMISTRY MAGICTHE PRISONER OF BEAUTY: Wei Shao, babe, do I have a song for you^^https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_sLMwWJhDs
For the record: I did complete drama and have plenty to say about its final stretch, but that'd leave little room for everything before, plus not many people bothered with express package, so just know it's a standard cdrama HE, for better or worse. Now let's go back to episodes ~20-31. First must admit: at that point I've finally made peace with genre and characterization issues, esp ML's, that bothered me a lot before. Still think show should've leaned heavier into “ruthless to his enemies warlord” aspect of the role – I'm fine with him NOT being that towards FL anymore, but with all canal building, paperwork and forgiving undeserving folks left and right you kinda forget eventually that he was supposed to be THE baddest bitch alive of his time. Was it budget constraints putting cap on action scenes or censorship deeming the guy TOO murdery for an admirable hero and survives-the-ending material? What a shame! Blood never looked half bad on Ning-ge, and ML's fighting style intrigued me, it was unlike any his other works...Alas, huge loss that drama didn't give us more of this Wei Shao:
https://www.tumblr.com/dramagifs/784963216690249730/wei-shao-the-prisoner-of-beauty
But, otherwise I'm mostly fine with him being not that close to his novel counterpart personality-wise – far less of violently moody teenager and more like rash
manchild with hardcore case of “foot in the mouth” syndromemust be them momma's genes. This whole scale of internal contradictions eventually settled once non-fluffy part of the plot kicked back in, and that's when LYN's performance finally shone as it should've all the way. Told ya he can do it when script supports him! Ep29, in particular, was a freaking masterpiece both in acting and storytelling (I think SZE herself peaked in Ep30, but she's been consistently fantastic anyway), pushing every possible button from comedy to romance to ANGST all in one. And unholy hell, the chemistry! I haven't seen such nuanced, emotionally loaded love scenes since TTEOTM. There were lines, but most got conveyed purely throughdifferent kind of tongue speakstares, gestures and body language, resulting in entire non-verbal convo! As if my jaw wasn't already on the floor from WHAT transpired, I couldn't help but be amazed with HOW. This won't be the last time, btw, but since we agreed to postpone finale discussion... And then epic mood whiplash not so long after – vibe shifted, their usual behaviors reversed, but intensity remained. This is why I love dramas – when they get it, they GET it.Can't wait to see endless Ning-ge's cringe mortification from questions about those scenes lol – sorry, dude, you'll NEVER live it down!Required fields are marked *

Plot-wise though... As I've said before, drama ended up being not as war and politics heavy as I expected, but focus on lead romance and mending the relationship between two clans isn't that bad.
Far too much irrigation stuff still, it was not as thrilling as makers thoughtWhat's bad is, to no seasoned cdrama watcher's surprise, is pacing – grand return of the plot was welcomed, but still late. For a while it did help, yes – seen that people still found late 20s episodes slow/not thrilling, but I disagree, it was a solid part in comparison. But genuinely curious how much was cut and why here, because missing chunks are obvious. Even 4 more episodes permitted by cap could've done major good... Alas, that was just not meant to be, so let's stay grateful we've got the drama as it is at least, I certainly prefer such flawed “vanilla” (yeah, as much as I'm a puritan lmao) end result to eternal shelving, source material's “romance” or whatever that abomination of micro-drama is going to be.Prayer circle for all delulu souls hoping the latter will be superior adaptationP.S. Almost forgot about Huangzi's OST from battle scene in Ep30 I loved. Strategist's cheerleading moment had me on the floor)))

ETERNAL
WAITING FOR PART 2BROTHERHOOD 2: Haven't got time to start it yet, but hopefully this will give recently bloodthirsty me all the battle action TPOB fell short at. Zero hopes for a good ending, but at least this should be it for LYN's notorious drama funeral streak – he cannot possibly also perish in cameos, can he? *shudders*Required fields are marked *

Kdrama: still no absolute must-watches for me after RP 😴
Tastefully Yours: Plodding through it. Came for the food, but there isn't much of that all, sadly, and too many other side plots. I hope they get back to the food, and that the French father is actually an undercover food critic who puts Jeonjae on the map. I just want her to cook cook cook, clingy/ dishonest men be damned. The food in ep 5 looked mouthwatering.
Unwritten Seoul: Surprisingly moving in many places. I do wish PBY would not pout so much when she talks though, I can barely hear what she says... Is it an affectation for the role?
I'm liking the cinematography a lot though... Many scenes, title included, have a very Wes Anderson vibe to them... Especially at that nightmare of an office, with the rows of cubicles and computers... Reminds me a lot of his movies and shows.
Looking forward to begin Good Boy today.
CDrama: Surprise surprise I am bingeing Prisoner of Beauty... Waiting for whenever all eps will drop. Unexpected drama, not my genre at all usually, but both leads are so good together... The FL is so shrewd and sassy, and I love how she's slowly winding the ML around her little finger. I do FF some of the political machinations, but overall it's been a great watch. Apparently something unpleasant happens in the last few eps, but I'm hoping it'll remain good overall.
English: Rolling my way through Last One Laughing UK... Never has just watching people trying to keep a straight face been funnier... My son does not get it at all, and I really cannot explain it.
Going to check out Dept Q, not really in the mood for that genre, but Matthew Goode sells it to me.

NINE PUZZLES remains gripping and the number of possible suspects for the mastermind villain is shrinking. Captain Jang could have just whispered the name of the murderer before he died instead of a cryptic hint, but this never happens in any drama for obvious reasons. Kim Da-mi and Son Suk-ku are very good together, I just hope there is not going to be a romance. Psychiatrist Park is the most suspicious, because she looks more normal than her creepy colleague.
SECOND SHOT AT LOVE remains good. I liked the staff night out and how it showed the pressure to drink is so strong in these events. I almost expected FL to give in. Sad to see mum driven to alcohol herself now.
OUR UNWRITTEN SEOUL is so much better than I hoped for. The Double Lottie (Das doppelte Lottchen by Erich Kästner) is a classic I have always loved and these kind of stories have their own charm. I actually did not even notice that these episodes were extra long.
I am ready for the Colossal Spirit to come to an end. The twists are still coming, but I am not sure I like the return of the real Yoon Gap. It look as if he will be returned to life for a romance with Yeo-ri and Gang cheori ascend to wherever he wanted to ascend to. Love the king and his eunuch!
TASTEFULLY YOURS is a drop. The French-Korean family and the food were the only good part, the rest is pretty much non-sensical. This is a bad script which even these good actors cannot improve with their acting.

Re: 9 Puzzles
I am calling it here first! (since we only have one more ep to the finale)
My plot prediction is: there could be more than 1 killer (at least 1 psychiatrist, 1 police officer, or even 1 former patient or orphan)
Even if there is only 1 killer, there are accomplices (i.e. the police or psychiatrist) aiding and abetting the serial killer

UNWRITTEN SEOUL: I feel spoiled by this show right now, because it's extending the glow from "Resident Playbook" and reminding me all over again what I love about kdramas (when they're this good). "US" is obviously a different type of show that "RP," but it's even better at depicting pain and loneliness without dragging the viewer down into a mire of hopelessness and despair. I love the set-up for both the romances, but more than that, I am fascinated by all the characters (although as I mentioned before, I'm tired of kdrama moms who yell and insult their adult children because they don't like their professional choices) and the specific quirks and circumstances that make them both unique and relatable. Plus, Park Bo-Young is truly phenomenal here.
SECOND SHOT AT LOVE: A consistently good drama, even with the very predictable and lame second-act villain making his appearance. The leads have a nice vibe, the second romance is cute, and there's just enough depth and poignancy to make its argument about functional alcoholism being just as real as the kind of overt drunkenness most of us associate with chemical dependence.
TASTEFULLY YOURS: I just started this and although I'm gathering from current Beanie commentary that it might not remain this enjoyable, I had a great time with the premier. Kang Ha-neul is such a pleasure to watch and a really good comedic actor; he definitely elevates the more cliched moments. His co-star is equally adept, but I was less enamored of her character. Still, this one delivered on its premise and I hope it doesn't start to annoy me.

After Resident Playbook, I have yet to start a new K-Drama. I stuck with Pump up ..., though I am not sure why. I didn't watch episode 10 yet. The preview seems to have smothered maybe the last interest I had in this drama.
I began Youthful Glory, but paused it because I was all in on The Prisoner of Beauty, which I absolutely loved. It wasn't perfect by no means, but in the end that didn't matter. I just felt the ending felt rushed and needed more scenes.

I seem to be able to pay attention to more than one drama a week. This week it was Nine Puzzles. I am really impressed with Kim Da-mi’s immersion in her character. Is this really the same person as in My Beloved Summer? I was also very confused when it didn’t wrap up at episode 9. Hulu didn’t list them as upcoming, so I had to hunt up that it was 11 episodes. I share @daebakgrits concerns for the identity of the murderer and also thought the old rookie cop was him. However, I am curious about the misdeed at the center of it all, and our two leads getting some resolution.

Life severely cut into my drama watching this week. This did not get in the way of my wife and I enjoying two more episodes of THE HAUNTED PALACE.
My wife finished the Chinese Costume Drama SERENDIPTY and says that it is very good. She had too much on her plate and paused her watching of THE PRISONER OF BEAUTY- even though it is very good. She might wait until Viki posts the fortieth episode and then binge the rest. She has also paused YOUTHFUL GLORY. She has LEGEND OF ZANG HAI on hold as well- even though she knows that it is going to be very good. All of these are good shows (so far- one has to cross one’s fingers with the forty-episode limit). The main reason for this is that she has been watching LEE SAN, WIND IN THE PALACE.
I am behind on all of my other shows except for 24 HOUR HEALTH CLUB (aka PUMP UP THE HEALTHY LOVE]. This week’s episodes were a bit of a mess, but I still enjoyed the show.
Our Weekender FOR EAGLE BROTHERS has begun its final story arcs. Our lovely leads are now a couple- and that was done very nicely. Dramatically the best part of that was our ML at the Columbarium promising our FL’s late husband that he would help the FL take care of his brothers. The now intertwined story of the two younger brothers and the Silla family (and Hani’s Baby Mama) exploded with a partial reveal of Maknae’s birth secret and the sordid past of Seri’s parents- including the fake ‘news expose’ used by her dad. Now we will be treated to a custody battle for Hani- and surely the other shoe will drop regarding Maknae’s birth secret (at least now Seri will have an Oppa to talk to).

THE PRISONER OF BEAUTY only has 36 episodes in total. Tencent's VIP airing schedule ends on June 6th iirc, after that Viki and Netflix should upload the remaining bulk fast.

Thank you for that information. My next question is how did they manage to get it down to thirty-six episodes? My understanding is that it was based upon a fairly substantial web novel. I realize that the final episodes have not yet aired so we still do not know how well the adaptation went.

By cutting out almost all R-rated stuff, which is pretty much half of the book?))) Some secondary characters/plotlines were also cut or merged. Last episodes are rushed, but with cdramas that's basically a norm these days.
I'd rate it is as above average adaptation - flawed (mostly in pacing and tone), but entertaining, with strong visuals and fantastic cast. To be fair, adapting this novel to screens was a hellish task to begin with.

That is a good explanation. My wife has found it to be a very good drama, but it probably will not count as one of her favorites. If it as a story that was difficult to adapt- and many are- perhaps we should give the writers credit for doing as well as they did.

Off to watch Ep5 .
The subs are missing half the time .
Had to guess what was happening. It looks like after his parents died, the wife of the deceased father’s commanding officer took our ML in, as his relatives had no use for him. Then she saw our FL as a spouse for him ,without really knowing anything about her, the wife seemed apologetic to our FL for the ML’s lack of a family ? Am I close ? 🤔😂

@30 minutes - she was writing the word "okaerinasai" on his palm. it means "welcome home".
yes, when orphaned, his relatives did not want him, they treated him badly and he wrecked their things and ran away. the naval officer friend of his father's took him in. takimasa would just study, work and sleep - he told them he was thinking about going to china to get involved in the war.
so they arranged a marriage quickly to keep him grounded at home. the woman is apologetic to natsumi for "using her" in that way.
so she wondered if she might've married someone she had feelings for, but was forced to marry someone she didn't know.
but natsumi is happy with takimasa.

the scene on the street when he's leaving -- he's saying "ittekimasu" (i'm leaving) and she's saying "itterashai" (go safely/take care).
the auto subs are terrible... LOL.

oh, also she's sorry natsumi has to live the life of a wife of a naval officer. anything can happen at any time, and she may find herself alone.
takimasa was sorry to natsumi for marrying her (the seta friend made him realize), because she might've had a good life without worry and being lonely all the time.

A lot of positive WWW feedback this week on currently airing kdramas thankfully, because I'm in a summer slump and rewatching DESCENDANTS OF THE SUN. Because. It is so good.
THE PRISONER OF BEAUTY. After last week's discussion, I decided to go back and rewatch from the third episode. This is such an entertaining show that I tend to miss the quality. Up to ep. 26 and holding until the remaining episodes are loaded on Viki. Kudos to this director and cast. My happy watch of the week goes to veteran actor Peter Ho in a short, comedic role. What a robber.
ETERNAL BROTHERHOOD, season 1. This was top tier on my iQiyi list for six months and now that EB2 is available, I went back to watch the series. Viewer Beware Warning: ep. 1, season 1 has atrocious subtitling. Thankfully @gikata steered me to youtube or it would have been a drop. By episode 6, iQiyi finally got their act together. Visually, this is a stunning show. I admire its ambitious storytelling and production quality. EB was obviously filmed with on set sound because you can see the sound booms in the episode outtakes, and also watch/hear the actors flub their lines. (The outtakes are fabulous fun, even without subtitles they are interesting).
YOUTHFUL GLORY. Idk what to make of it. This may be a casting mismatch with Song Wei Long doing the heavy lifting for his costar.
Speed watched the imperfect EAT RUN LOVE a modern day cdrama romance/business story. You cannot miss the talent oozing out of lead performers Sabrina Zhuang and Chen Fei Yu. There's a young man with ACTOR written all over him.
I've got Prime, so next week it's time for GOOD BOY and Park Bo Gum.

Brace yourself for Good boy the police corruption is even worse than it was in Crash. I thought it would have a similar vibe but I feel Good boy is more violent so far.

EB is such an interesting case, honestly - ambitious production, but very tight budget, leading to many fascinating creative choices. For example, drama uses ONLY natural lightning, lots of night scenes notwithstanding. Yuning even joked that if actors wanted to be visible in filmed footage, they had to try their best at finding sources of light to stand near first))) Minimal makeup and zero beauty filtering. Bet it's been a while since you've last seen human pores in cdrama?)))
Btw, show had to be fully redubbed later because of censorship - initial cut was closer to source material with many banned fantasy/sci-fi and politically triggering elements. OG novel (there's also an anime) takes place in distant future, on planet far far away, which humans spaceship-crashed on and later formed fusion feudal-meets Regency-meets steampunk civilization. Multiple warring states, including fantasy race ones - you can spot leftover line in subs about elves, orcs and demons in some episode later))) All that had to be scrapped.

That certainly explains the bizarre subtitles in S. 1, ep. 1, and the use of "orcs" for enemies.
Personally, I appreciate the gritty look of this drama. ETERNAL BROTHERHOOD is almost like watching a well-done Black and White film. The look matches the story, and lends authenticity to the viewing experience. It's a sophisticated drama. They did a lot with a tight budget, and did it well.
I'm almost afraid to ask ... am I going to hate the ending?

I'm on Ep2 of second part rn and still unsure whether some low-fantasy stuff remained against all odds. Part1 had a few rather... bizarre moments.
If it was a western show, it would've 100% air on HBO.
Based on how true to novel's spirit Part1 was, probably yes. I've been mentally preparing myself ever since, not that it helped much...
