Tastefully Yours: Episodes 3-4
by Unit
Our not-so-chabeol might have left Seoul, but the people he left behind are not done with him yet. And speaking of the past, we get some breadcrumbs from our chef’s backstory. In the meantime, our Jungjae family adopts a new member, and the team join forces to rise above some external setbacks.
EPISODES 3-4
It turns out Beom-woo doesn’t need to lie his way out of Yeon-joo’s “why are you really here?” question, because she provides the answer by herself. Earlier on, Yeon-joo overheard Beom-woo’s phone rant about Young-hye leaving Motto for La Lecel, and she (Yeon-joo) misunderstood the situation to mean Beom-woo’s girlfriend leaving him for his brother. A whole makjang plot! Anyway, Yeon-joo assumes Beom-woo came to Jeonju to heal from the heartbreak, and she commiserates with him — despite his many attempts to tell her that she’s wrong about everything. Lol.
Moving on, a petty Choon-seung spreads a rumor around town that Jungjae is going under, and he also reports the restaurant for every health and safety violation he can think of. Yeon-joo tells Beom-woo to stay put while she handles the situation, but an equally petty Beom-woo reports Choon-seung’s restaurant for a violation. Things escalate as both sides sling mud at each other, and Jungjae ends up on the losing side — leading to a pissed off Yeon-joo, who scolds Beom-woo for participating in the reporting contest.
Jungjae’s sauce supplier suddenly becomes unreachable, and Yeon-joo sets out to visit him. Beom-woo is quite grumpy after Yeon-joo’s scolding, but Mr. This-is-none-of-my-business wakes up early to accompany her on the trip. Lol. The duo learn that the supplier hurt his back while prepping a new batch, and Yeon-joo takes it upon herself — and a very reluctant Beom-woo — to finish making the sauces. Yeon-joo gives Beom-woo a crash course in traditional sauces and how the flavors influence the taste of food, and he’s drawn to how pretty and delighted she looks as she eagerly chats away. Essentially, this trip is an avenue for him to further catch unplanned feelings for her.
Beom-woo snaps out of the romantic mood when they get a call that Jungjae’s kitchen is on fire. It looks like arson, but there are no CCTVs and the police investigation will take time. Myung-sook marches off to confront Choon-seung, but he denies it. Sure, his drunk ass was loitering the premises, and he remembers breaking in and playing around with a lighter. But he swears he doesn’t remember actually setting fire to the place. Beom-woo and Myung-sook want to report him to the police despite his pleas, but Yeon-joo decides to give him a chance. She tells him to get the kitchen up and running in three days, and he readily agrees to this.
Choon-seung tries his best to be Mr. Fix-it, but he’s pretty useless with his hands, and Myung-sook scolds him for his immature and lazy behavior. He counters that he also knows he’s good for nothing, but it’s not like he wanted to live like this. Apparently, he had dreams of his own, but his dad said to stop doing “pointless stuff” and focus on the family business — which Dad won’t even put him in charge of! “I wasn’t born just to inherit the gukbap restaurant,” Choon-seung cries. Beom-woo is affected by this, and it looks like he can relate to Choon-seung’s story about the family business cancelling out personal life goals. His statement about double majoring in architecture seems to support this theory as well.
DIY aside, our Jungjae squad still needs about five million won to renovate their kitchen. Luckily, there’s a food truck contest at an upcoming two-day festival with that exact amount as the winning prize. They’re able to submit their application before (okay, some seconds after) the deadline thanks to Choon-seung — and he’s so proud to finally be of help to Jungjae, that he quits smoking. But here’s the kicker: he doesn’t remember setting fire to the restaurant because the arsonist is actually someone else!
Back in Seoul, Chairwoman Han is not impressed with Young-hye’s touched up neobiani recipe, and she asks if Sun-woo intends to serve “this trash” as La Lecel’s signature dish. Ouch! The chairwoman tells him that she knows he set Beom-woo up for dismissal, and she reminds him that his brother is the type to get even with people who backstab him. This is basically a “get your act together” warning from the chairwoman, and Sun-woo immediately starts digging into Beom-woo’s activities in Jeonju.
Young-hye heads to Jeonju, and a panicked Beom-woo introduces her to — an indifferent — Yeon-joo as his ex-girlfriend. Yunno, before Young-hye spills the beans that he is a recipe thief who preys on restaurant owners. Heh. Young-hye is curious about Yeon-joo seeing how she makes Beom-woo all flustered, but her curiosity turns into a bruised ego when Beom-woo tells her Yeon-joo is a much better chef than she is. It’s bad enough that Young-hye overheard Chairwoman Han’s scathing critique of her dish. And now Beom-woo is saying a “country bumpkin” has better skills? Ha!
The food festival finally arrives, and Beom-woo is enthusiastic about making money from the food truck, as well as winning the prize money from the contest. Then he finds out Hansang Foods is a last-minute sponsor of the festival, and his enthusiasm takes a nosedive. Of course, this is Sun-woo’s attempt to stick it to his brother — and even worse, Young-hye insists on participating with a food truck from La Lecel to confirm if Yeon-joo is really the better chef. Smh.
The good news is, Sun-woo increases the prize money to ten million won. The bad news is, none of the festival attendees are stopping at Jungjae’s food truck. While planning their menu, Yeon-joo insisted on selling basic gimbap even when Beom-woo suggested they sell a fancier dish. Now that it’s all crickets around their truck, Beom-woo swings into action by ordering boxes of premium laver and beef. This is Mr. Experienced Marketer insisting that Ms. Chef needs to be a little flexible if she’s interested in selling out and winning the contest. Yeon-joo relents and goes from basic to fusion gimbap, and the customer response is overwhelmingly positive. At the end of day one, it’s Jungjae 1:0 La Lecel.
Young-hye vows to turn the tides on day two, but Sun-woo isn’t confident in his chef’s ability to win on her own. Ouch! He organizes a meet and greet with a popular trot singer to attract customers to La Lecel’s food truck, and Young-hye’s ego takes another hit. Pfft. But it’s one thing for your boss to not trust you, and it’s another thing for you to not trust yourself — to the extent of changing your menu to a similar one as the competition! Smh. For someone who complained Beom-woo was stifling her creativity by making her recreate recipes, Young-hye sure lacks originality when the occasion calls for it. Perhaps if she stops being so publicity-hungry and goes back to the drawing board, she might turn out to be a more decent chef than she currently is.
Beom-woo calls out the blatant cheating with the meet and greet strategy, and a scorned Young-hye expels her frustration with snide remarks at Yeon-joo. She rants about all the “nobodies” parading themselves around as chefs — and the whole time, she’s referring to our very own summa cum laude graduate from a prestigious culinary school in the U.S! Didn’t nobody teach this snob not to judge a chef by their country accent? Tsk. In all of this, Yeon-joo is unfazed because at the end of the day, her cooking skills will do all the talking.
Jungjae struggles to make sales no thanks to La Lecel’s meet and greet, and Choon-seung suggests pairing their gimbap with his self-made nonalcoholic traditional liquor. His teammates are hesitant to try the liquor — because, let’s face it, who wants to drink anything Choon-seung brewed? — but they’re blown away by the taste. Choon-seung actually has talent? Who would have thought. Lool. Jungjae goes back to selling regular gimbap after an influencer requests for it, and their sales pick up. Our resident rumormonger also goes around sharing his liquor for free, and telling everyone to vote for their gimbap because Beom-woo and Yeon-joo are expecting a baby and they need the prize money for baby formula. I absolutely cannot deal with Choon-seung! LMAO!
But despite Jungjae’s best effort, La Lecel ends up winning the contest. Aish! On the bright side, Jungjae gets four million won as second place winner, and that combined with the profit they made from sales is enough to repair their kitchen. An upset Choon-seung insists he counted the votes a minute before they closed, and Jungjae had the most votes. Beom-woo confronts Sun-woo for rigging the contest — and for the arson at Jungjae — but Sun-woo denies the accusation. And now that Beom-woo has lost to him twice, Sun-woo no longer sees his brother as a threat.
Young-hye comes to gloat over winning, and a still-pissed Beom-woo tells her to stop calling Yeon-joo a country bumpkin. Young-hye points out his feelings for Yeon-joo, and our hero stutters in denial before leaving. Young-hye might have “won,” but she can’t deny Yeon-joo’s skills when she sneaks a plate of Jungjae’s gimbap. In the meantime, an irritated Beom-woo wrestles with his feelings all the way back to the restaurant, and after Yeon-joo’s repeated probing, he explodes. “Apparently, it looks like I have a crush!” He spurts. “Have a crush on what?” Yeon-joo asks. “On you. I like you,” Beom-woo replies, before going in for a kiss. Whoa! Slow down, guys, we’re just two weeks in!
I’m really enjoying this show, and I love that Beom-woo has settled in nicely with the Jeonju folks. Sure, he hasn’t shelved his thieving plans yet, but he has genuinely begun to care about Jungjae and its people. My highlight of the week is the gimbap illustration of how Beom-woo and Yeon-joo’s different areas of expertise can be combined to achieve best results. Yeon-joo understands the palate, hence her insistence on selling regular gimbap because customers easily get tired of fusion — as proven by day two. But Beom-woo knows that customers are initially attracted by flashy visuals, and Jungjae would not have made its first day sales if they didn’t switch to the fusion gimbap. Beom-woo and Yeon-joo complement each other in the best of ways, and I can’t wait to see more of their partnership outside of the romance.
I’m also more curious than ever about Yeon-joo’s backstory. She schooled abroad and used to work at a fancy restaurant in the past, so why is she running a struggling restaurant in Jeonju? So many questions, I hope we get our answers soon. In the meantime, I’m loving the random blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameos, and Kang Haneul’s many meme-able expressions. This man is having so much fun with his character, and I’m here for it!

Other than Go Min Si, the biggest reason I started watching this show was its food theme. I love anything that has to do with food. What ended up intriguing me was the chemistry among those 4 – each one has a distinctive personality (sometimes over the top) but I am curious on how the writers will weave them together as a team (presumably). When Yoo turned out to be all talk and no action (when he was trying to repair the restaurant), Kang actually consoled him and gave him encouragement and assistance – I did not expect that at all. The bickering among the two couples also amused me at times. Oddly enough I am not that invested in the romance among them – rather I am more interested in how and if they complement each other. Also, I feel like there is a backstory to why Go came to this town all by herself in the first place (sneak preview at the end hinted at an ex). Last but not least, will the 2 lady chefs end up being enemies (like Heo’s Diner) or respectful competitors?
What keeps nagging me is I cannot help but think that down the road Go will find out Kang’s hidden agenda and get blind-sided by it. However, given Kang is a pseudo-celebrity, and Hansang is a big corporation, all she needs to do is go online and she will find out anything and everything that has happened recently. Then she can deduce why Kang is here in the first place, and what his ulterior motives are. I look forward to seeing how all this plays out.
Have a blessed week ahead, fellow beanies!

I'll admit, the whole underlying motive waiting to be found thing makes me a bit nervous for how our chef will react. I, too, am curious as to how the show will deal with it. It would be interesting if we find out that Chef Go has done some sleuthing and actually has a good idea of why Kang is working with her.

I'm not convinced that Yeon-joo is completely unaware of Beom-woo's plot to steal her recipes. She is no dummy, likely is familiar with the cutthroat world of fine dining, and plays her cards close to her vest.

I think she already knows. She is keeping quiet to see if he will confess his non-romantic intentions. In fact, she could take the kiss as just another way to steal her recipes.

I thought about this too. She's a sharp cookie, and it'd make more sense if she knows already. But I don't wanna give the drama too much credit, yet.

I agree that the show is playing with us, making us wonder if she knows, but she does. When he started begging her to make a recipe so he could steal it, she neatly dodged his every effort.

Plot Predictions!
I think our FL came to this sleepy town to start a restaurant because of:
(a) a key inciting incident in her childhood (traumatic or otherwise)
(b) to fulfill a promise she made to a deceased someone (who used to run a food joint here)
(c) to repay a debt (it could be like Chocolate, a dish that saved her in the lowest point of her life)
(d) some other curve ball

All solid reasons.
Or it might even be a combo of them.
Can't wait to see what the writers have in store for us 🙌 🤗

e) she fell deeply in love with chef YYS, whom on top of everything she deeply respected for his talent, but due to his immaturity and arrogance (or some kdrama misunderstanding), he berated her talent, which caused her hyper perfectionism and withdrawal from “haught cuisine.” Add-on some childhood drama about someone diseased (grandma), and voila, all the perfect ingredients are blended for a rather dull-tasting backstory.

No, please no.
The last thing we need after scoring not one, but two, stellar award winning female chefs in a show, is to discover that *gasp* deep down, they are both yearning for some validation of self-worth from an idolised male mentor who gaslighted them.
I am not a feminist, but frankly we don't need that rubbish.
What I would LURVE to see though is the two female chefs go from feuding rivals to buddies, with BW becoming the outraged third-wheeler! 🤣🤣

YJ+YH=female version of bromance. And BW red-fuming over feeling excluded? Hell, I’ll take it.🤣 This version of show is a real recipe BW needs to steal. 🤝
And yeah please, avoid option e) at all costs, drama, please.

"both yearning for some validation of self-worth from an idolised male mentor who gaslighted them."
This is not what is happening in this one. The validation that all these characters (besides our FL until now) seek is from the ML's mother. Which not only the second female chef did not get but got destroyed when she spit out the first bite she took out of her dish. I hope that she will let go of her superficiality and get back to the basics, which is making food that tastes good primarily. And I wish both of our leads will help her, like they are doing with the 4th member of the crew. What I really want from this show is for them to get the Michelin stars and refuse them, getting away from that toxic competitive environment of food snobism and enjoy cooking food that they like for regular people, not just the elites that need caviar (or fig vinegar) with their ratatouille for their delicate palate.
But to get back to your comment, only a feminist will forget that detail and spin it to point out only what is convenient and trendy.

Presumptions and predictions:
1. Yeon-Joo came from a rich family because her CIA degree cost several hundred thousand dollars.
2. She is an idealist and perfectionist so she quickly got frustrated in fine dining restaurants in Seoul. She probably did not last long either being fired or quitting.
3. Her family went bankrupt and she was blamed for wasting their money on a degree she is not using to its fullest financial level. She leaves Seoul to avoid criticism.
4. Locals call her "weird" but they accept her quirks. But she is not a local since people bought the newlywed story.
5. I think in the backstory there is a connection or conflict to Beom-Woo's family, especially his mother.
6. I think Yeon-Joo went to the countryside to use the best organic ingredients with her western culinary skills to elevate basic Korean cooking; a goal to become a traditional Korean food prophet, surpassing Boom-Woo's evil mother or celebrity chefs like Jang.

I like it, but my preference would be:
- raised poor with parents that had a small restaurant that either got kicked out by a corporate chain (she made a comment about how food tastes in those enterprises and called the new hire a chef just because he worked 15 years in a restaurant) or, why not if this is old school kdrama, she got the envelope money from the mother of the new cameo guy and was told to leave the country. She got the degree and did return outside of Seol to do what she loved when she was a child.

I literally I'm tuning in for Haneul so its nice to see the show is coming together with great Second leads and a baddie like Bae Nara thats recently became my fav due to his Hero Class' acting. the Dakkji kiss (gave me Squid Game 2 flashbacks! kinda was waiting for Gong Yoo to appear rofl) took me off guard but it fit right in with BW and his personality. I was intrigued by the show being about a food romcom and the whole arc of her having actually studied and worked for a major restaurant but decided to go to the countryside to make a living is giving me major "The Bear" vibes. idt a romcom would gi full The Bear on us but it would def be interesting to see her story, even more so with the cameo in the preview!

every episode is better than the last. I was laughing out loud and smiling throughout... it's the small details that get me, like Beom-woo desperately trying to keep his pants on when gukbap kid pulls, so he doesn't flash everyone 😭😭 or the sheer disgust and horror that Chef Kang has at the idea she's Beom-woo's exgf 🤣🤣
Yeon-joo is so pretty, can't blame him for falling... but a kiss and a confession by ep. 4? wow, these 10 ep dramas are something else. because of the time constraints, next week we might get their dating era or "ex comes back" chaos

I loved what Yeong-joo said, it’s really up to her to find whether Beom-woo a good person or not and that she doesn’t need a help from an ex for this. It’s a good writing.
I do think that it’s not so much a short-form drama that’s causing the sudden kiss by episode 4. It’s really all rushed and a bit nonsensical. That, unfortunately, is an example of a bad writing. The electric chemistry can be developed in 10 episodes without a need to force a kiss so soon.

Thanks for the recap @unit--I'm enjoying this one as well. I do have to say I didn't find the tit for tat and macho shouting between Beom-woo Choon-seung very amusing, and I thought that went on too long. I'm glad that conflict has been resolved, although neither man knows how to tile a wall. Don't they have tile spacers in Korea? Their grout lines must be all over the place!
As a once frequent watcher of the Food channel, I really enjoyed the food festival food truck competition, and I found it amusing that it was kind of reprise of the discussion we had on Dramabeans last week--French duck confit vs. Korean gimbap. I hope they continue that theme when it gets down to restaurant competition.
As far as the romance, now that there is a grudging confession and a kiss--(though pretty passionless on Yeon-joo's side--she obviously isn't sure yet) I'll be anxious to see some further development. I hope the return of the ex doesn't lead to more shouting and macho posturing, but rather more interesting food production!

With only ten episodes I was wondering if we’d get some major movement this week and we definitely did! I kinda expected a kiss in episode 5 instead of 4, but I’m not mad about it! It was nice to see a Beom-u realizing his feelings (his face as he put the pieces together!) and telling Yeon-ju about it literally within a few minutes. I’m sure there won’t be a relationship yet, but now everyone is thinking about it! I wonder if Yeon-ju will find out about Beom-u before they get romantically involved or after? And there is no way we get a culinary school cohort photo with Yoo Yeon-seok in it unless he’s going to show up in a minute, right?
I suspected Chef Jang was being propped up by good recipes and it looks like we got some confirmation. I’m sure she’s competent, but it doesn’t seem like she’s inspired, and since she’s already splashed her face everywhere she has a lot to lose. That neobiani seemed like it had waaay too much going on, and I like the contrast between that dish and the gimbap that was pared down to just exceptional basics. It makes sense that they would give Chef Jang the contest victory - she has too much to prove to be written out of the story yet!
The leads’ visit to the jang ajusshi has me wanting to learn how to make them myself…

I think gochujang is the one that is the most famous outside Korea because it is used in lots of Korean dishes that have crossed cultural lines, like tteokbokki and as a coating for fried foods. I fell down a jang rabbit hole a few year ago and am now one of those people who has like six different versions of soy sauce (ganjang) around! 😂 If you have access to doenjang, you should try making doenjang jjigae - it's easy and so so good!

Thinking out loud:
Isn't it a blatant conflict of interests to have an affiliate/employee take part in the contest the parent company is chief sponsor of?
That 10 million won prize money? It's left hand goes to right hand right there.
And Confit? Seriously? That darn duck was slow-cooked in its own fats for 6 freaking hours. They had a whole assembly line of kitchen staff and an expensive sous vide machine in their fancy set-up.
Whatever happened to cost-vs-profit ratio? It flew out the window in the contest of egos.
If I were a judge, I would have to award the prize to humble gimbap for understanding the contest brief. They got the memo.

1. Ep 4 really picks up - with the entire story beat on the food truck contest a delightful highlight for me (in stark contrast to the silly food contest in Potato Lab)
I actually watched that whole sequence twice cos it's not only food-centred, the fluid dynamics of festival crowds ground realities and how they made agile adaptations of their menu / ingredients / marketing strategies in response to both the market demand and their competition is what I really signed up for.
and OMG I was actually salivating over the gimbap (esp when they drizzle Mala sauce over!!) and made a mental note to self that maybe I should have gimbap the next day. I wish they would have a drama series microsite that publishes the actual recipes used in the show.
What sauce did she cook to pour over her homely carrots?
Tastefully Yours: sorry, not sorry. It's always the food for me, not the romance LOL
2. The Kiss: I was a bit startled that they sealed the deal end of Ep 4. Wow, that escalated fast. Would have preferred it end of Ep 6, or start of 7 to make it more hard-earned and well-deserved.
I did not buy it. Right now, I will un(officially) clock it down to "under the influence of alcohol".
3. Love the addition of Choon-seung into this chaotic energy! The underdog quartet & motley crew's chemistry is what's driving the story and keeping viewers like me watching. I couldn't care less for arson side-plot or elder brother's underhanded biz sabotage.
On that note, can I say that anyone who still thinks BW is a chaebol can lay your doubts to rest, our boy is so unapologetically working class he can pass off as a fish-monger! I love their bootstrapping mindset and energy! It's so much more fun to watch than to trod through the tired trope of chaebol "fish out of water" turning his nose up at the countryside.
4. My new fav nickname: "Gimbap's mommy"
5. Can't wait for YYS' cameo to stir up more troubled waters (and simmering passions)!

I was on board with the kiss because I think it will push everyone into thinking about how they really felt about it, but I don't believe that they are going to start a relationship at this point. He's been falling for her from the start, but she's got farther to go before she fully likes him.

I love me some gimbap and Yeon Joo's gimbap looked delicious! The colors were nice and bright.
The food truck plot was good - scenes of the different foods and people having a happy time. Different marketing methods. I liked seeing how Beom Woo and Yeon Joo voiced their own strategies and were able to combine their ideas well. I was really hoping they would win first place especially with the food truck festival being a minor plot in the overall story. D;
The quartet has had some nice bonding moments after a rough start. It was cute that Beom Woo and Choon Seung got along quick to get their food truck entry submitted on time. The VTS? BTS? TVS. LOL. The motorcycle ride was scary funny, heh.
Nice to see Choon Seung passionately showing something he made too. His enthusiasm and efforts to work hard makes his character more palatable for sure.
Beom Woo was a bit too loud at times so I hope he tones it down. I still love his fun facial expressions and side comments. His winky face at the camera and his dancing when they closed early. Sooo extra. XD
The kiss happened fast. Beom Woo and Yeon Joo have shown growing attraction to each other, but he fell faster. They are not total enemies so it works. She may be hiding her feelings better than he is.
One thing that took me out was the layered placement of Jung Jae's orders. The papers were all over the board lol. ^^"

Overall, I’m enjoying this show (especially KHN sassy acting) but I have to say I’m not feeling the chemistry between the leads yet. Like, why does he like her? Why does she like him? Why did they even kiss? There was no meaningful foreplay between the two (except that brief yank away from leaking bust stop roof.)
The chemistry I DO feel is a hilariously passionate and incessant quarrels between Beom-woo and Young-hye. At one point, when they argued at the food truck, I was fanning myself — whew these two reeeeeaaaally go from zero to a hundred, and in love too?!
In fact, despite hints here and there about Yeon-joo’s complicated past, it’s really Young-hye I’m most curious about. Her constant self-hyping-up masks deep insecurity (I suspect). Her pride hurts deeply when Chairwoman insults her food, and I bet she values Beom-woo’s opinion too, despite her repeated denials to the contrary. I loved her dare-the-world attitude and wish that chemistry could have blossom under the passionate guidance of Beom-woo, but, alas, she’s not a main character.
Finally, I’m super curious about Beom-woo. How could a man “double majoring in architecture” became a very capable restaurant manager with zero sensitivity to the art of culinary and its creators, chefs. There’s some fascinating backstory I hope they explore more in detail.
And please, drama god, add some passion and energy into this OTP, or I might just fall asleep.

This drama is quite fun! I like the main characters.
I wasn't not sure to see YYS on her picture. I wonder what is her past, she's not a “country bumpkin"!
It's sad that Young-hye doesn't trust herself. The 2 brothers did her wrong but she needs to rethink herself as a chef too.

Can I please see a K-version of The Bear?!
Like, they have enough dramatic cop shows and med shows to offset the lighter ones like Resident Playbook, why can we not have a gritty chef show?
I'd love to see one about a character like Chef Edward Lee... Have a proper rivalry between chefs of two restaurants and styles, Culinary Class War, but make it fiction. This show already has all the same elements, but why they've just made the female chefs basically pawns, or waiting to be rescued... Le Sigh.
Or a story with a younger guy like Ahn Bo Hyun? He would fit in my fantasy food drama of "guy from across the tracks but rose to Michelin chef, comes back to rescue dad's failing restaurant, meets hometown girl who's a great cook as well, sparks fly, wok catches fire, etc etc". You could reverse the sexes and roles, and it would be even better. Moody lighting, lots of great food shots, hot as heck chemistry, simple story... Very fanfic- coded I know LoL, but I'd rather that, than whatever this is.
Tastefully Yours is both too bland and over-garnished at the same time. They've got some good food going, at least, but somewhere, it lacks heart.

But colour me most surprised when Beom Woo spoke very passable French in ep 5 (the first few minutes that I've watched so far... I ran over here to comment before continuing LOL) Granted, it was tourist guidebook French, but KHN did a good job!

I still shiver at the memory of the ML's mom in "Love Next Door" who was meant to have been a diplomat who lived in France for years, and yet apparently couldn't speak a word of French that was intelligible (she was also done dirty by the writers who apparently didn't know enough French to construct a real sentence!!)
Still, the otherwise brilliant Jang Young-nam is currently playing a v. diff mother in 'Our Unwritten Seoul' and showing her range :)

For the leads who have no money, they do get around . . . a lot. A bonding not bonding bus trip, soju drinking parties, etc. Episode 3 brings loser Cheon-Seoung into the Jungjae “family” after he admits to torching the restaurant as an escalation between him and Beom-Woo. It is hard to have two dumb male characters on the top cast list. It seems the arsonist is probably Cheon-Seoung’s dad. The solution is another side-adventure: a food truck contest. However, they have no money and no food truck. Chef Jang gets torched by Hansang Mom (who we learn is a culinary superstar) as her food is “trash.” She goes to find Beom-Woo so she can regain her cooking magic (I guess his berating behavior adds flavor.) The street meeting where Beom-Woo compounds his lies by saying stylish Chef Jang is an obsessive ex-girlfriend was cringe but it did show us that Yeon-Joo already knows everything.
But in Episode 4 we learn Chef Jang is in the village to “compete” in a local foodie festival. Her modern truck is serving haute cuisine to the masses while Jungjae, short on cash and ingredients, goes with “gourmet” carrot gimbap but Beom-Soo changes course to add expensive meat to the menu. It is hard enough to cook well to start, but to pivot to a new dish on the fly is something else. But they sell out early, sigh, then realize day two needs something better. Around them, everyone is trying to hard so they dial it back. It would have failed but for Cheon-Seoung and Myung-Sook’s crowd story that Beom-Woo and Yeon-Joo are “newlyweds” who cannot afford formula for their unborn child. Pity purchases are still purchases. In the end, Chef Jang wins while Jungjae disappoints in second place. Choon-Seoung, who has suddenly become helpful, thinks it was rigged; Beom Woo confronts his smug brother who smirks but does not admit. He thinks he won, but Chef Jang tries their food and knows she really lost. Quietly upset, Yeon-Joo becoms the ddakji queen by taking all the kids squares, then runs away holding Beom-Woo’s hand. At the restaurant, Beom-Woo confesses and without asking for an answer puts a dead fish kiss on Yeon-Joo. That was too fast for even a short series. I assume the opening of the next episode will be Yeon-Joo either slapping him or giving him a judo toss. Also the math does not add up if 5 million won was barely enough to repair the restaurant, 4 million won after paying extra for prime meat ingredients has to put the crew back to square one: no money to rebuild. I also learned in screen grab that Yeon-joo graduated from CIA in 2014. There is an 11 year backstory to tell before we get into an ill-fated romance.

There is a lot that I love about this drama. Mostly I like the old-school vibe that I get from watching it. "Make k-dramas great again" is the first thing that came into my mind when I saw the first episodes. Just like how the traditional food recipes have withstand through the ages defying different changing times and trends, the recipe for kdramas that made it so popular should also. And speaking about traditional recipes, in the first episode we get a glimpse of how the ML's mother made it rich (or super rich) by distributing homemade kimchi adding corn flour to it instead of the staple glutinous rice flour. I tried to find more about how Koreans think of it but my algorithm is not helping me. We see her in that promotional video acting almost like th ML now. She also tells him to "find it", and by "it" meant to find a way to succeed without any help or money. I don't know what will be more important to her, getting the three stars from "that guide...or whatever from overseas" (I kind of liked that phrase way too much) or him succeeding like she did out of nothing.

"Make [ ] great again" is so nazi-coded, I can't even fathom it brings anything else to my mind except revulsion, let alone such a benign concept as kdrama.
I find Chairwoman a supremely unlikable character, even more so than BW's brother. She insults food, is double-faced (pleasant to public but cruel to her own sons), despises the kimchi-making process as evidenced in episode 1. She's fastidious and disparaging. I don't know how she made it rich but I'm curious as to why everyone wants approval from such an atrocious person, except her money. Making money not always equates with intelligence and hard work, sometimes it equates with dumb luck, riding on someone else's back and stealing. As someone pointed out, there might be some backstory involving YJ and BM's families, but at this point I see no redeeming quality for this character, no matter the background they gave her.

I see that you are still triggered by harmless words, I suggest you work more on yourself. And yes, those words are harmless because what I want from kdramas is to be able to bold again and push the envelope and not produce the same cookie cutter formula they have been doing recently. I want for the writers, directors and actors to be free to express themselves without worrying that a certain hypersensitive loud minority will censor them. If that is nazism, then we both live in a different dimensions. And I don't understand why you chose to rant about the chairwoman to me, I despise her just as much as you do. I noticed though that you forgot to use important words such as matriarchal or misandry, because the opposite words that would have never been missed if the character would have been male. My comment about her remark is about the writer, I found it bold for her to throw it outhere for all of us. I despise all these elitist foreign institutions that want to impose their "standards" to other countries in all areas in order to control them. And I also like the idea of her testing him because I hope, in the end, he will find out that he doesn't need her but she needs him. I just pointed out where I think and hope the writer is going with this drama, points that are far more interesting for me then the divide between the sexes that has been pushing lately. Your bias against me and the despise you have for more than half of American voters have certainly made you not understand my comment and you chose, again, to regurgitate all that nonsense for some insignificant virtue signaling like votes. I just gave you one more, hopefully it will help you get higher on that dramabean caste system faster.

This is fun! 😊
And I think I'm actually more interested in Beomwoo's past (and abandoned dreams) than uri Hidden Chef's. The mentioning of architecture picked my interest and I really liked the bonding moment with Clumsy Choonseung when Beomwoo explained how to tile the wall, I could sense his past love there...

Yeah, starving actors like a young Harrison Ford learned a construction trade before stardom. Not so in Korea?
Having done a fair share of bathroom repairs, one always starts in the most visible corner where you want a full tile (focal point), use a level to mark the bottom tile line and use a space to mark the grout lines. You use a trowel for better coverage. I saw two hapless actors making a mess.

I am still not on board with this drama, partly because I know a little about the restaurant business. I have no idea how FL is making any money at all, only once were customers shown in her place. She has nerves of steel, is remarkably relaxed, disappears for hours to visit a supplier and ends up doing his work. What about her own place?
Her landlady is openly looking for a new tenant - alarm bells should ring. Now the place is fire damaged (what will the landlady think of that?), this is not undone with a few new tiles. Still, no sign of any urgency, instead, a romance is blossoming.
She is also a saint, forgiving the assumed arsonist almost on the spot after seeing his crocodile tears (poor boy, it is his father's fault that he is spoilt and lazy). I am sure she is aware of ML real goals, but she still keeps him around.
At least ML is not shouting so much anymore, he does say a few sentences in a normal voice. This is some improvement. Maybe I should not look for realism and just enjoy the romance.

I think she gave him chance because she had lived in this town for many years and knows a little bit about him. He may be petty but she doesn’t think he is capable of intentionally setting fire. May be she trusted her judgement and his reaction and gave him a chance.

They are setting up FL lead as someone who likes to give second chances to misfits and transgressors because she was once (or believes herself to be) a misfit or transgressor.
This is a rather boring set-up, but I'll go with it.

Many have pointed out that KHN is an acquired taste. 😄
But I don’t see much in the actual character to complain about: he works hard, competent, ambitious. A bit misguided about his desires and goals but he doesn’t resort to mean ways to achieve them like his brother. His growth arc is still to come into a view and I hope it’s going to be impactful and meaningful. Generally speaking, this fast-talking hustler is quite endearing to me, actually.

I like the story so far but a bit apprehensive about how that ending will turn out. Yeon Joo is amused by him but I do not think she likes him as yet. He, on the other hand, is a bit of a mess at the moment. I get he likes her but he has to shape up first. But together as business partners, they are great together. They compliment each others strengths. I do not for a moment think they are ready for romance. But I welcome the guest stint of the actor showing up next week!

That has to be one of the fasted confession and kiss in dramaland. Yoo Su Bin is great addition to the cast. I loved his roles in CLOY and Start Up. There was more food this week but I felt there was a conflict of interest due to a chef participating in the contest that was sponsored by the same company she is employed with. “ Gimbap’s mommy, three more rolls of gimbap” had me squealing !!!Glad that they did not get caught.
