Premiere Watch: Second Shot at Love

Time slot: Monday-Tuesday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Rom-com
Episode count: 12
Global streamer: Viki

Reasons to watch: I know a drama about an alcoholic female lead sets off about as many (maybe more) red flags as another recent drama, but the more I think about it, the more I wonder if there’s some serious potential here. After all, dramaland is filled with heroines who regularly drink themselves into oblivion and it’s merely played as a plot device. So I’m curious what Second Shot at Love will do with this theme.

Sooyoung plays our mechanic who relies on the hair of the dog, and Gong Myung — who’s totally getting around as a leading man lately — plays a doctor who was once her first love. Again, this drama is walking a fine line, and it’ll likely take an episode or four until we see what they’re going for and how enjoyable of a ride it will be, but it’s looking promising. I mean, I dare you not to smile at the cutie pie photos from the press conference!

TL;DR: Grab your non-alcoholic beverage as we watch this premiere, and let’s hope for a gem

As someone who works with recovering addicts, I will be approaching this title with apprehension and skepticism. I wonder how and if this sensitive topic will be given proper recognition and respect, or if this show just becomes a farcical collection of cliches and stereotypes.....I hope to be pleasantly surprised by it........

I'm kindof meh on the lead actor but love Soo-young. I don't have huge hopes, but would love for this to be better than some of the other (and very weak, imo) romcoms that have come out in recent weeks.

I appreciate uhni0317's thoughts- and sympathize. But after seeing how many shows butcher the law, legal process and the concepts behind them I am afraid that I cannot give any assurances. That being said I do hope that at least some level of sensitivity and respect will be shown. At the very least the premise of the show celebrates the idea that sobriety beats drunkenness so at least it is a start, and I will be watching.

I've only seen the first 10 minutes, but they definitely handle it well initially. It's still clearly a romcom, but we're given a reasonable and accurate mini-lesson on alcoholism, and although this is obviously no "Leaving Las Vegas," it seems like the FL's problem won't be minimized, laughed off, or portrayed as cute.
