Park Min-young leads a swindling trio in The Confidence Man KR

Amazon Prime is finally plunging deeper into the K-entertainment waters with their first full-fledged series — The Confidence Man KR (working title) — which will be headlined by Park Min-young (Marry My Husband). It’s a directional shift for Amazon Prime, as unlike their rivals Netflix, Disney+, and Apple TV+, they had primarily focused on getting streaming rights for a few dramas here and there.

In a remake of the hit Japanese drama The Confidence Man JP, the crime-comedy features a trio of con artists who have a Robin Hood-esque vision. Or, should I say Hong Gil-dong in Korea’s case. Park Min-young plays the leader of our scammer group as Yoon Yi-rang and in true K-drama fashion, she’s described as having a most ~genius~ brain, ranking in the top 1%.

She’ll be joined by Joo Jong-hyuk (Unmasked) and Park Hee-soon (Squid Game 2) to round out our three cons. And with their individual talents combined, the team is indeed brilliant when it comes to swindling other people’s money into their own pockets. However, the fat wallets that they’ll be eyeing will belong to the baddies of baddies in society.

Production for the caper began filming last September in 2024 and has recently wrapped. Directed by PD Nam Ki-hoon (Destined With You, Big Bet) with scripts penned by Hong Seung-hyun (Criminal Minds, Joseon X-Files), Amazon Prime’s The Confidence Man KR will have a total runtime of 12 episodes and is expected to release later this year.

Finally the 200-billion-pound behemoth joins in the mix.....always wondered what Bezos was waiting for.
Hope this translates to more big budget productions down the road for us viewers.

He was too busy sucking up to fascists and planning his ‘let them eat cake” wedding in Venice.

Now, now, give him some credit. He’s still very busy sucking up to fascists and making sure Amazon soon becomes the evilest corporation in human history. Stuff like that leaves no time for self-care like, say, kdramas or being a human with a soul.

- PD Nam Ki-hoon had directed three Kdramas that hit streaming platforms: first, Disney+ (Big Bet), then on Netflix (Destined with You), and now... on Prime Video with this upcoming Kdrama!
- I am going to predict that Park Min-young would be the queen of Prime Video. First, Marry My Husband, then this upcoming Kdrama. If her next Kdramas would acquire or would get international streaming rights to Prime Video, would be her third lucky Prime Video charm? Let's see in the brief future...

I was pleased when I saw this news a few days ago. Park Min-young (as a con artist) must have found this role a very interesting change to the romantic dramas she has been associated with. I really hope this is a non-romantic role for her and maybe she can show us some comedic acting chops.
The original 2018 jdrama THE CONFIDENCE MAN: JP is available on Netflix US (10 episodes) and I plan to watch it before the Korean remake airs on Amazon Prime Video. Being a subscriber there will be no availability angst for once.

Also ‘Coming Attractions’ for US viewers on the Amazon Prime Video front, Park Bo-gum’s upcoming JTBC S/S drama GOOD BOY (16 eps.) will be airing on Amazon Prime with episodes one airing this Saturday.

For the first time in a long time, Park Min-young looks like she's having fun.

At least since Secretary Kim, it has felt like she was going through the motions of her rom-com roles. Her eyes were tired. I hope shaking up the premise helps her rediscover herself as an actress. I'm sorry, though, that she's going to be a GEENIUS = a kind of super hero. I hope her character has some very human flaws.

I feel a bit skeptic about the adaptation. Despite liking Park Min-young and Joo Jong-hyuk in other dramas, I don't believe either of them can do justice to the characters of the originals (Park Min-young not playing an outspoken honest independent woman is already hard to believe).

I didn't like PMY's past dramas. She did weird choices of styling for her characters that didn't make sense for me.

At least, in this drama, she can be stylish and it will be good for the story!
