[Beanie Recs] More Korea/Japan collabs, please
by DB Staff
Ahoy, Beanies! It’s time to gather your collective genius for a recommendation series that features you and your drama knowledge. We’ll drop a drama conundrum and leave it up to you to provide a drama rec, and the appropriate rationale behind it, be it long or short.
I’ve got my eye on the upcoming drama Hatsukoi DOGs, partially because I heart Na In-woo, but mostly because I’ve realized I’m really loving the Korea/Japan crossovers. Last year’s What Comes After Love was especially moving to me with the Tokyo/Seoul timelines, the mixed-language dialogue, and all the cultural conundrums. Since Hatsukoi DOGs won’t be out until July, anyone got recs for the best K-dramas featuring Japanese actors (or vice versa) to hold me over until then?
Have a very particular drama itch that needs scratching? In need of a Beanie Rec? Email us at hello @ dramabeans.com and we’ll feature your topic in a future post.

Personally, I'm excited for Can This Love Be Translated? with Sota Fukushi joining Kdrama world and Romantics Anonymous with Shun Oguri and Han Hyo-joo \o/
Otherwise, lastly there was Eyes Love You with Chae Jong Hyeop in a Jdrama.

Friends (2002) (starring Won Bin) (miniseries, 4 episodes) (this miniseries also commemorated that yr.'s World Cup in South Korea and Japan)
Passing Rain (2002) (another miniseries, only 2eps., released that same year) (starring Ji Jin-hee)
Star's Echo (2004) (starring Jo Hyun-jae) (another miniseries with only two episodes) (that was Jo Hyun-jae(!) before 49 Days, Yong-pal, Let Me Introduce Her and even last yr.'s Chicken Nugget as what I noticed on his Asianwiki page)
The Secret Message (2015) (starring TOP)

I've never seen it, but since it's been in the news because of Mei Nagano's cheating scandal, J-drama News Anchor stars Korean actor Kim Mu-jun (My Dearest, Love All Play, Nevertheless).

In the recent k-drama The art of Negotiation there are a pair of episodes which take place in Japan, and there are some main characters played by Japanese actors.
In Flower Boy Next Door one of the "flower boys" is a Japanese actor (Mizuta Kouki), but all the series takes place in Korea.
Song of the Bandits and The Nokdu Flower have some Japanese actors too, because of the historic period.

You might like The Monster Within. No Korean actors, but it is a Jdrama mystery romance produced and directed by Koreans, so it has all the usual kdrama tropes.
