Weekly Squee #7

Welcome to your weekly chat space for all things that bring out the squee. With plenty of spaces to vent and share about dramas — good, bad, or ugly — this thread is dedicated to that uniquely positive punch of excitement brought on by unexpected cameos, the Episode-8 first kiss, and all other too-close encounters by an OTP.

Consider it a cozy place to sit back, take a breather, and open up about the latest drama moment that sent you into a foot-stomping, mouth-covering fit of squeals.

And if you’re squeeing about non-drama-related stuff, hey, throw it in there. We could all use a happy story and rush of feels to keep us smirking throughout the day.

So, what are you squeeing about this week?

Beware of spoilers below!

Lee Dong Wook and Lee Da Hae are too cute for words in My Girl. I rewatched it and think it will be one of those dramas I go back to regularly for a great OTP and some really good laughs. I also loved the OST - it was so fun or so melo in all the appropriate places and I never got tired of it. I started Hotel King, but didn't get very far. Doesn't seem like it will be worth it and don't want to spoil the pair dynamics.

My Girl was the start of my 20 year of being Lee Dong Wook's fan🤩

I have a nice memory of Hotel King of laughing hysterically the whole way through and live-texting my friend making fun of it. 😂
Don't recommend at all.

Yes, LDW is great. I've seen and liked him in Scent of a Woman, Goblin, Reach of Sincerity, and Life. Which of his dramas would you recommend next?

Scent of a Woman is one of my most favorite dramas ever. So are both Wild Romance and Bubblegum.

I also love Partner which is an office ensemble drama, and Bad and Crazy which is comedy action.

I enjoyed both seasons of The Nine-tailed but not enough to rewatch them.

And most recently I watched and immensely enjoyed A Shop For Killers last week.

OMG, I have really bad facial recognition and had *NO* idea at all Lee Dong Wook was the male lead of My Girl when I watched it live 20 years ago as a kid!

I just remembered my whole family enjoying it a lot in front of the television set (these were the days when the Hong Sisters were doing their best work in stellar wholesome romcoms, before they went dark)

It literally took me 20 years (like, very recently) before I realised THIS is THAT! 🤣🤣 let's just say our boy has lost a lot of baby fats off his cheeks

Ok, so I guess my squee this week is: the romcoms of the Hong Sisters

And this year 2025, we have "Can This Love Be Translated?" to look forward to! 😍

The romcoms of Hong Sisters: add my squee to yours. The cracking dialogue sparks chemistry between the leads that might not have emerged otherwise. Funny super creative situations. I just hope they stick to sparkly romcoms for some time and leave their dark fantasy phase behind.

Well my heart just went through the whole spectrum of squeeee to eeeeekk from Resident Playbook. It made me rewatch Alchemy part 2 but i just remembered part 1 has more funny bits so I’m going back to that.

I'm watching It is Always Midnight in Hagwon and I have a confession squee to make: This people are making me curl my toes under the duvet in excitement whilst in a fetal position. If this is what love is, I'm willing to put myself in Cupid's arrow's path.

I'm going to give this drama a bonus for romance. I didn't expect to be swept away by it and it is just 4 episodes of romance.

Oh so agreed! Ahn Pan-seok knows how to do romance. Midnight in Hangwon is actually an amazing romantic squeeeey drama. Too bad all the non-romance scenes failed to match the intensity of the romance and were mostly repetitive.

My squee for the week is the OST #6 from Resident Playbook... The song Forever by D.O.... playing on loop currently. I had no idea of this singer, but what an extraordinary vocal range he showcases in this one. Even the instrumental version (piano) is so good. Also, the fact that it's YoungWon-i in Korean adds to the squee factor, because their ship is almost sailing 🤞 That last scene in the playground is just lovely, closing with that gorgeous overhead shot.

He’s going to be back (in a drama) this year! Opposite Ji Chang-wook in a villain role and I am jazzed for it! I love every version of him I’ve ever seen (or heard, for that matter)! Now I’m off to listen to this OST immediately.

This is good news for those who love D.O.!

As @isagc and @midnight have mentioned, D.O. is very talented and multifaceted 🥰🥰
Oftentimes, I think (East) Asian Entertainment downplays or complete undermines talents simply because the person has the “traffic star” or “idol” status attached to them and their careers, and even though their skills and talent have become more recognized in recent years, skills and talent still isn’t the very first thing people think of when such celebs are mentioned, and I find this fact sad 😔 But there’s still comfort in knowing that their talent and skills are recognized in their circles— in the case for D.O., he’s very beloved and recognized in the muscial theatre circle 😊

6

Required fields are marked *

what an extraordinary vocal range he showcases

If I'm not mistaken, D.O. is especially famous for his range among male singers, as is Eunji among the female singers (Jung Eunji who is soon to be in the gym drama with Jun)

This is why I’ve been so elated in the past couple of years that he’s been releasing more solo stuff. In EXO they had to spread the moments around to everyone, and he didn’t always get to showcase his range, but when he’s handling it all himself you really get to hear him do everything! (Can you tell I listen to EXO to hear D.O.? 😅)

I tried listening to Exo today, but it's just not my thing.
I have found that I cannot listen to Kpop groups as a whole, but the solo efforts are so good. I love listening to RM (his album Mono is fantastic, though I do not understand anything) and also Jin, even as I do not prefer (*in whispers*) *bts*

I totally get what you mean.

I love listening to Eunji's voice, she has an incredible voice, but once or twice I tried listening to her group's songs (Apink) it was like she was invisible. All her bandmates too, all have lovely voices, but in synch they sound monotonous, flat, uninteresting.

3

Not much to squee about at this particular moment.
However- I am looking forward to Netflix space Kdramas redeeming themselves with Lost in Starlight with Kim Tae Ri’s voice. The teaser looked amazing. Please don’t disappoint.
A first of its kind- an animated Netflix k movie. Please please please be good.

Not much entertainment related things to squee at this moment, but personally there’s something 😊

Yesterday was my birthday, and I had initially told my friend—who’d asked me a week ago how I wanted to celebrate— that I didn’t really want to do anything since I had a pretty hectic weekend pre-birthday with family prepping for an upcoming family wedding and was going to be tired and required time to recharge— #lifeofanintrovert 😅😅. Still, my friend—and 2 others—went out of their way and planned something for me 🥹 Nothing big —just hanging out doing things we collectively like (baking and board games) and then going out for a nice dinner (Japanese).

Sometimes— many a times— life’s simple moments are worth squeezing over, too 💖💕

I agree! Such friends are hard to come by. The older I get, the smaller my inner circle has become, but I’d rather have a smaller inner circles— like what I have now— with friends whom really, truly and genuinely care for and know me over a bigger circle of friends that only consists of surface level interactions on a daily basis

LOL More like a ladies’ afternoon process-of-making-Afternoon-Tea-happen kind of thing 🤣🤣 We were making and baking shortbread—matcha & black sesame flavoured— one of my favourite cookies 😋 And I’m pretty old school, boring, and kind of a grandma with my hobbies:
Board games (old school, I’m an early-90s kid), reading (boring), knitting (grandma 🤣), calligraphy, bookbinding, and making mixed media art

I’ll also de puzzles to the list, too, actually haha

I didn’t know about that— interesting! Maybe I gravitate towards such activities because I’m subconsciously stressed and anxious to begin with 😅 I was actually just telling my cousin a few days ago how I like activities that don’t require much, but are still mentally stimulating. Maybe these are the activities.
I’m definitely very Type A, cannot deal with clutter, tend to plan ahead instead of live in the moment—but at the same time— have gone through enough trauma in life wherein I have stopped panicking about things and just deal with them as they come 🤷🏻‍♀️🤔 Maybe it’s because every time something happens, in my subconscious, I think and feel like the thing could be a lot worse, so when it—thankfully— isn’t as bad as I expected, I don’t find the need to panic. Just deal with the situation as it comes

The cookies are really good! I asked my friend to send me the recipe the very next day, and I’m still savouring the batch we made on my birthday haha

All my hobbies don’t require me to be interactive with other people nor does it require me to get out of the house (although, I could bring it with me out of the house to do), so I’m not sure they’re all that great LOL 😂

4

@nessa we all need that recipe if you had a fanwall you would have dropped it there🙁 how can we share the joy? I looked it up and there are versions with cream cheese and eggs and white chocolate so who knows which is the tried and tested version you have?

"Sometimes— many a times— life’s simple moments are worth squeezing over, too."

I too get easily drained by social activities, which can lead to self-isolation and which is a big no-no for my mental health. So, whenever I feel like not going somewhere or doing something (of course, it excludes extreme cases of tiredness, etc.), I remind myself to still try and go and do the things. It's a small personal win for me.

I agree and am the same!!
For myself, even if I'm not really interacting with anyone or doing anything with anyone, I find that it helps my mental health just to be out of the house and to be amongst people. So I usually pick one or 2 days of the week and go on a mental health walk around the mall or outside if the weather allows, just so I can be amongst people and not isolated at home surrounded by 4 walls (or worse-- closed off in my own bedroom)

100% -- I'm the same! I sometimes take public transportation or explore a new coffee shop, just to be among people. Sitting in your own bedroom is like a bog, the more you sit in it, the more you sink in it. Gotta get out.

Happy Birthday!! :)

Yoon Kye-sang was a revelation for me in Kiss Sixth Sense. It was my first watch of him and he sold it so well.

I sweated too. That man played a character so prim, proper, and well-mannered and still was a hidden tiger in romance.

Have now seen Bai Jingting in two dramas and they were both fantastic. Finished Reset this afternoon, and it was a blast. The story was fantastic and I loved the way it ended. Had me on the edge of my seat countless times. I'm fine with the supernatural element and not knowing how it works -- just so long as it's consistent and the rules don't change. Some wonderful supporting characters -- Staunch Police Captain, Cat Guy and Lord of Asthma! Lots of ordinary people caught up in this scary story. Will be recommending.

The other was The First Frost, and it was a romance like no other I've watched and refreshingly free of some of the irritating cliches of k-drama. Sang Yan was the Lord of Sarcasm, while being the Lord of Lovers as well. Have also read the book in an online translation.

Though he's clearly better known, in both shows his female co-stars were absolutely his equal. Zhang Ruonan in The First Frost was so fine, all the subtleties of her damage and her strength, not a false foot. The portrayal of her broken relationship with her mother just dug holes in me. In the end, I felt sorry for her mother. Another kind of writer or show would have gone down the forgiveness route, but it made sense that Wen Yifan did not forgive. Her mother's weakness and neglect were a betrayal too far. And Yifan was actually quite tough underneath that gentle exterior.

And Zhao Jinmai, in Rerun, was just the spunkiest heroine without ever making that a cliche.

If you’re looking for another Bai JingTing drama, I recommend New Life Begins 😊 The world building needs a little suspension of belief, but I think it’s a good one with no characters that are truly bad or annoying, etc., and a pretty smart and capable heroine!
