Weekly Squee #5

Welcome to your weekly chat space for all things that bring out the squee. With plenty of spaces to vent and share about dramas — good, bad, or ugly — this thread is dedicated to that uniquely positive punch of excitement brought on by unexpected cameos, the Episode-8 first kiss, and all other too-close encounters by an OTP.

Consider it a cozy place to sit back, take a breather, and open up about the latest drama moment that sent you into a foot-stomping, mouth-covering fit of squeals.

And if you’re squeeing about non-drama-related stuff, hey, throw it in there. We could all use a happy story and rush of feels to keep us smirking throughout the day.

So, what are you squeeing about this week?

Beware of spoilers below!

So, @db-staff, I really want to have my only suggestion is to click and hit "favorite" for the future Kdramas (whether terrestrial non-cable and cable TV stations or weekly streaming K-dramas) after airing because I knew that after Kdramas finishing its airing, some people would whether love/like this or hate/unlike this Kdrama after you watching this entire Kdrama.

My only tip to my only Dramabeans suggestion that should have an option to click "favorite" on any future Kdramas after airing: stop people to click "favorite" on any future Kdramas before or during its run, only after airing, because they are feared that this Kdrama completely favorable or already being one of the favorite Kdramas of all time that was prior/before its airing or even during its run.

The favourite button just saves it to your shows tab on your profile page so I don't think it matters what that button has on it. I use it as an easy way to bookmark my current watches for easy access and then unfavourite them when the show finishes to clear room for the next batch.

I know some beanies use it to log all their watches over the years and others just the ones they really like. I like that we can choose how we want to use the show tab.

Though I have to say that hitting the 10/10 rating for the show *before* it even airs is a bit ridiculous to me. People can change the rating if, upon reflection, they find the show more / less favorable here on DB, thankfully. Still seeing ratings like 10/10 or 0/10 a mere hour after the show aired (in my region, at least) is a a bit of an eyesore. It's more of my personal pet peeve, rather than a suggestion for meaningfully changing the rating system.

I agree rating a drama before it’s finished seems premature when so many decline within the first few episodes or even worse, have a disappointing ending.

5

hmm, i do star ratings at some point before the drama ends, but i do preface a later post if i decrease the stars. i don't need to do this, i didn't realize it bothers people... i'm the type that thinks out loud, so i post what i'm thinking at the moment. i have decreased my star ratings a few times, and i explain when i do so. i can quit, tho.
; )

2

I think the timing of ratings are a personal choice. There are plenty of beanies, probably a lot of lurkers who rate during airing and without explanation. Do what works for you. I think it’s a shame that very few beanies write reviews so it’s unclear why certain dramas get the ratings they do.

1

@spazmo I agree with @reply1988 -- do what brings you happiness and disregard a grump like me, lol. My noobs k-drama friends come here and rate 10/10 out of exuberance of the first 20 episodes they watched, and I'm like, "My child, jusssst waaait." I find my interactions with them super funny in that regard, so I guess, there's an upside of rating shows hastily. I also agree with @reply1988 that I wish we had more reviews of k-dramas here. More people could have found better dramas or abstained from fire dumpsters.

3

*first 20 minutes* NOT *first 20 episodes" ....but you know what, weren't we all burned with dramas which were pretty good up till the last episode???

4

I'm behind everything live and when I don't have large trunks of free time, I often return to rewatching my favourites for comfort. I've just finished Forest of Secrets 1 another time, and still think it's the best Kdrama of all time!! I already knew the ending, I knew how things unfolded, but it was still so fascinating and addictive. The writer is genius, and the performance of the ensemble cast is stellar. For a long time I couldn't bring myself to rewatch FoS because of what happened to Shin Hyesun's character. But after finishing Mr Queen recently, my love for her, which has always been very strong, encouraged me to touch FoS once again, and I still love it as ever, and my heart still hurt for Eunsoo like the first time.

This time I watched Lee Junhyuk more closely and found his character very amusing. So I think I'll finally watch Dongjae The Good or The Bastard. But of course after I finish FoS2 once again.

I just finished another C-drama last night, so now I’m in-between moods and in-between re- watching my favourites from my “Forever Can Re-Watch” list until something new catches my interest

OMG, I can't believe that there's Mido and Falasol (Hospital Playlist band) song on Resident Playbook OST which was coming on Easter Sunday/April 20, so I'm hoping for Mido and Falasol on-screen Resident Playbook appearance.

I'm watching Crushology 101 but surprisingly (being a drama about crushes) it doesn't make me squee. I find it very entertaining, but I don't love the characters yet and the chemistry is so-so.

So my weekly squee is thanks to Way Back Love and the main couple, who are absolutely lovely in the flashbacks.

This week has been sadly squee-free in life and k-drama. So I turned to my personal squee-crack, King the Land. Why? I don't know. They're just so sweet and funny together. Yeah, they're not real, but the world is so full of selfish evil people being selfish and evil lately, and they both just seem so decent and well-meaning. And crazy about each other. And there's that episode 8 kiss you mentioned in the intro...

Okay, since the Weekly Squee is now up, I’m re-posting this onto here:

Xiao Zhan’s next drama—from YOUKU, which makes it so he’s now officially worked with all 3 of China’s Big 3 networks— Zang Hai Zhuan, has a premiere date!!!! 🥳

MAY 18th, 2025

Now let’s not get too excited, but at the same time, hope that this date sticks and actually pulls through, because we never know with C-Ent. 😅🤣

I'm currently watching web Cdrama DIFFERENT PRINCESS and am squeeing so hard over the villain-turned softball hero that is the male lead. The direction has alllowed him to be as awkwardly cute as someone his age having his first real crush is supposed to be and his shyness is soooo cute. 🤭

I also started watching 2020 Kdrama CHEAT ON ME, IF YOU CAN and I'm squeeing very hard over the FL's candidness and subtle threats towards her notoriously cheating husband who's acted, equally squee worthy in his own right, by Go Jun.

Watched the first 2 episodes, and enjoyed it. Reminds me of The Romance of Tiger and Rose, and it has a perfect mix of comedy and drama, which is the only combination I can stomach when watching the chinese costume dramas.

These low-budget-made-for-quick-ROI Chinese dramas can sometimes be really fun, mindless and good to watch! I like how such dramas introduce us to less renown talent that might not be getting as much love and attention for their works 😊

I am on episode 10 of my first watch of MOONLOVERS SHR. And I have to say that I am hooked. There have been many Lee Jong Gi squee scenes! I am not very familiar with him - just because I haven't watched any of his dramas- hard to believe as he is so popular. (I tried to watch Flower of Evil, but it just didn't work for me, but I feel I will revisit it now!) Kang Ha Neul is amazing as always. IU is growing on me. Fun to see Jin Ki Joo who I didn't know until Undercover High School.
I am thankful, as always, for the Dramabeans recaps and fun to wade through the hundreds of comments! I am not a fan of the very over used close ups of the actors faces. So distracting and unnecessary! And, I have realized that there are many scenes that have been cut which is frustrating to read about them in the recaps and not see them! I also do not care for the OST, the "modern" music is very jarring and out of place.
But, overall, it is keeping me hooked and I know I will join the thousands of viewers that are unhappy with the end!

I am so, so torn because of Moon Lovers - is this one of the best Kdramas ever or one of the worst? Can it be both?
The thing is - I was so hooked when I watched this, despite many, many shortcomings which would be too spoilerific and the endless, grating OST.

It would have been fun to live watch this and split into Team 4th Prince and Team 8th Prince, no?

Weird side effect: Whenever Baekhyun pops up in my playlist nowadays it's all "hey, it's the little prince!".

Well, I guess Team 4th Prince won IRL (for the OG Scarlet Heart at least) - since Liu Shi Shi went on to wed Nicky Wu who played the 4th Prince after that!

My weekly squee goes to the latest "rented" member of Running Man, Choi Daniel.

It’s easy to see why he’s so well-received -- he seems positioned as a kind of stand-in for Lee Kwang Soo (they even used LKS’s theme music for him, a detail no one missed). But while LKS often leaned into playing a character -- clueless, petty, and larger-than-life -- Choi Daniel feels more like a real person.

He comes across as a genuine goof, adorably scatterbrained, more open-hearted, and quietly authentic. He’s not as hysterically funny as LKS (and credit where it’s due -- LKS was consistently hilarious), but Daniel brings a softer, more generous take on the “tall-feeble-character” role, adn it's refreshing to see.

Whether that image persists, remains to be seen, but for now, it’s a lovely change of pace.

Things have been kind of rough in my world lately. Just an enormous amount of stress in the past couple of weeks and I’ve barely had time to watch anything, let alone post on here. But last night I was watching an episode of Tangerines and they did a flashback to Park Bo-gum waving to his family as he left in the morning. He has such a great smile and against his Jeju-tanned-fisherman face it was extra striking. And I didn’t really squee, but I did whatever the tired version of that is. I’m loving this show but he and his smile are not in it enough! Happy that he has another show coming up soon.

Other than LUCY comeback spazz, I would have shared about LUCY Sangyeop and When Life Gives You Tangerines. Maybe in another post. I will compile it and share it somewhere here. My agenda to spread LUCY awareness continues and it's drama related because he talks about WLGYT quite a lot 😂

[SPOILERS] I wish to squeak madly about THE FIRST FROST. I binged to the end yesterday and was so entranced, I immediately started watching it again. It's my first c-drama so I have nothing to compare it to. Some thoughts:
* First of all, struck by how different Mandarin sounds, to Korean. The tone, the mouth feel, a new experience for my ears.
* Secondly, loved the cityscape, the hills, the cable cars that crossed the screen at the start of each episode, the counter that counted how many days since they met.
* The intensity of this romance, as the slow burn builds, is something to experience. Once they kiss, passionately, for the first time, in about episode 20, it blows the roof off. Yes, that is a long time! But it is worth the wait.
* Bai Jingting is something to behold. Extraordinary looks, but much more than that, the performance of the Epic Boyfriend -- eternal devotion initially just visible through cracks in his arrogant cool, and then unpeeling layer by layer. He could convey so much just in the tension of his face, his quick looks to the side where his cold eyes turned hurt.
* The godawful growing list of sexual assaults and harassment that she suffered, mostly damaging HER reputation. No wonder she was shutdown. Each episode a blow on a bruise.
* Although the show was sexually conservative, I found it refreshing how their powerful sexual attraction was made obvious, not ignored or downplayed.
* Although her family were dreadful, the show had three lovely families to enjoy, that were balm to the heart -- one large friendly working class family and two wealthy families who were kind and nonjudgmental. It was very interesting to me that there were no "class" issues in this show, as is so common in k-drama -- maybe a requirement of the Chinese authorities??
* The 2nd-lead romance was adorable -- so funny when a drunken bender found them in bed together with no knowledge of how, and their subsequent outraged examination of the building security tapes had me chuckling along with the security staff...
* I worried the second lead female was going to be a manic pixie dreamgirl, but I think she was firmly rooted in the reality of her family and her very practical work. Her ability to get his family to unravel their traumas was a delight.
* A fine cat. British shorthair, I believe.
* One can be cynical about romance. Impossible by the end of this show -- I believe they would have lived half-lives without each other. I loved how they were together. So many episodes where they just would not communicate, but this is made up for later as they slowly confess all their pain and secrets. Their interactions all through the show were a delight to me -- they seemed real and adult, even when they were being petty or jealous. I compare this to another epic romantic drama, say Descendants of the Sun, where the leads' interactions drove me mental, they were so annoying and immature, particularly her. This is the case in too many romantic...

I'm glad you have entered C-drama land with a good show! I have not watched First Frost yet but it's on my list, of course.

Bai Jing Ting is one of my favorite Chinese actors, so I highly recommend the first drama I saw him in: Reset.

I would love to see him in something else, so I will search out Reset. I do like fantasy/science fiction, but I prefer where it actually makes sense which is why King the Eternal Monarch lost me at the end, and W: 2Worlds a bit the same, even though I loved most of it.

2

I really liked Reset and it does make more sense than both mentioned by you.

1

One of the things that struck me about Reset is that — time bending aside — it feels and looks like it takes place in a real world — characters who aren’t excessively rich or fashionable but are just trying to go to school and make something of their lives when they find themselves in this unreal situation.

and will definitely look out Hidden Love

3

Trust me, after you watch Hidden Love (with a ML that screams Green Flag!), the ML of First Frost will be a far distant memory.... 🤣🤣

A toast to even better C-dramas in your journey ahead! 🍹

3

Oh, that’s okay lol
I plan to watch FIRST FROST at some point, but not HIDDEN LOVE— I don’t like the FL actress (Zhao Lu Si) from HIDDEN LOVE, not as an actress nor as a person

… Okay, now I gotta retreat lest I get pelted after saying that
*ducks for cover* 😅😱

2

OMG - I loved loved loved Hidden Love.
Others will probably disagree, but I found HL so much more relatable than First Frost. It took ages to understand why the FL acted the way she did in FF.

2

@nessa What's wrong with Zhao Lu-Si? I don't know much about her as I don't keep up much with celebrity gossip. I though she was fantastic in Hidden Love.

2

@lostpanda

It might be a combination of herself, her (former?) agency, and even her parents (who oversee her work), but there seems to have very bad ethics in play in terms of her treatment towards her own staff (who have voiced concerns), manipulation in utilizing her co-stars (especially her male co-stars) for clout (influence, traffic/popularity) and attention (i.e. purposefully creating subliminal messaging and making fans think they’re dating) and then paying money to daipai (social media based gossip accounts, essentially a Chinese version of Korea’s HoverLab) to trash her female co-stars—or the female co-stars of the male celebs she’s trying to impress and use for clout and attention— online utilizing trending topics.

And before anyone (not specifically to you LostPanda 🫶🏻) comes after me for saying all of that 👆🏻:

Yes, I don’t know Zhao Lu Si on a personal level. Yes, all of those ^ things could be the work of the people around her and not actually her doing it. Yes, doing all of this could all just be to get her name out there in such a competitive environment, such as showbiz. I know all of that. I also know what PR is and how it works. My education is in Communications (PR) and Sociology. As always and as with everything I think, see, share, and feel about C-Ent., C-dramas, and C-Celebs, my comments are based on—years and years of—observation, figuring out on my own how things work in C.Ent., and even observing the reactions of the people who have worked with her and how they also choose to react and act around her (i.e. Moments that are caught off guard because people thought the camera and their mic’s were off or from natural reactions that can’t be faked, etc.). I am only human can can be EXTREMELY stupid and wrong and completely off my rocker about things I say about things, too, so take it ALL with a heavy dose of caution and salt and please make your own decisions and conclusions 😊

I must emphasize, by no means is my intention to maliciously bash Zhao Lu Si, it’s all just conclusions I’ve made based on my personal observations about the things she does— her M.O. as an artist in C-Ent.
