Weekly Squee #4
by DB Staff
Welcome to your weekly chat space for all things that bring out the squee. With plenty of spaces to vent and share about dramas — good, bad, or ugly — this thread is dedicated to that uniquely positive punch of excitement brought on by unexpected cameos, the Episode-8 first kiss, and all other too-close encounters by an OTP.
Consider it a cozy place to sit back, take a breather, and open up about the latest drama moment that sent you into a foot-stomping, mouth-covering fit of squeals.
And if you’re squeeing about non-drama-related stuff, hey, throw it in there. We could all use a happy story and rush of feels to keep us smirking throughout the day.
So, what are you squeeing about this week?
Beware of spoilers below!

Fanwall frenzy!!!
I wanted to make an urgent post about Buried Hearts, It is Always Midnight in Hagwon, and The Art of Negotiation last week and I couldn't find the energy to look for the weekly squee. The recaps weren't up either. So I gave up.
Now, I've forgotten what geared me so much to want to post.

Some lf their choices are inspired, some are headscratchers

The makjang renaissance of the mid 2010's - early 2020's is still one of my periods in K-dramaland
Money Flower, Woman of dignity, The Last Empress, Penthouse, World of the Married, Mask, Love Marriage Divorce, Misty....etc
It was escapist trash tv at its finest, dramas were super fun then

The Last Empress was the drama that made me return to korean dramas after a drama slump. Imo the palace setting, the royal outfits both modern and traditional, makes it feel different from other rich people makjangs.

It's the finest trash for sure. I sometimes watch other countries' "makjang" (they really are great escape!) and nothing beats k-makjangs. They are the classiest and most rational over the top productions out there 😂

Started watching My Girl and am charmed by the silliness and fun of it all. Can definitely see why both boys ar falling for Yoo-Rin and her peppy antics. 2FL isn't appealing and I'm anticipating/dreading her getting clingy and evil per trope when ML realizes she's not the one. For now's she's reasonable and understandable so maybe this drama will take a different turn? I really hope she doesn't become unwatchable like 2FL in Scent of a Woman and spoil the series for me.

All the kind comments I received from Beanies on the When Life Gives You Tangerines recaps sent little zings of squee through me this week. I love those moments of connection, when someone takes the time to say that what I wrote affected them in a positive way. (It's not the foot-stomping kind of squee, but certainly a heart-lifting one.)

@dramaddictally I think we can all tell that you meticulously picked out all of the perfect words to convey the grandiose nature of 🍊 Tangerines 🍊. Deadlines be damned. It wasn’t just a recap, but a glimpse of the essence of the show. I must have read the last paragraph of that recap 10 times, word for word, by now.
And just like the special dramas that park rent free in your head for eternity, I still vividly remember your December post on Flawed Relationships. I’ve been a fan of yours from that point forward. Congrats on your first fan. I’ll keep my distance- don’t worry about getting a restraining order.

Ah @dramaddictally we can’t help but give the praise where it’s due. Most beanies are living in worlds where we are the only
K-drama fans in the village so when DB staff capture what we feel and express it eloquently it adds something extra special to the experience. Every now and again we get a standout drama and this was that drama so it was always going to be a challenge to capture the essence of it and you did that and so much more. I hope you continue to share your joys (and disappointments) with K dramas with us.

My personal squee this week (outside of having not been able to stop myself finishing Karma and being super smug about foreseeing twist before the end—because I fixated on a pair of shoes for no apparent reason) is that I am taking a Korean exam this weekend. Still at a baby level but very proud about doing it and I hope I won't tank it!

Hi beans!
I started Doubt because I saw it is nominated for Baeksang Best Drama. Still midway ep 2. I keep pausing and doing other stuff 😅.
Outside of kdramaland. I'm still enjoying LUCY! LUCY has concerts coming up and I'm not going to any 😭. They have a new album coming out at the end of April...maybe I'll buy it. Maybe. If I do, it will be my first korean singer album 😆.
Meanwhile Shin Sung Rok is still staying in musicaland. I don't feel he will return to dramaland this year.....or ever 🫠.

I watched the video of him singing from phantom of the opera so many times. That's when I understood why he has been under utilized in kdramas. I have seen him of course many times as the baddie. I have been impressed by him in two dramatic roles- On the way to the airport and thank you.

Many Turkish shows come up on my Netflix home screen, but I've never actually watched any. They seem a bit too dramatic for me, maybe I should I actually try watching one.. One thing is for sure, the actors are so insanely good-looking! And of course, Turkey is top of my bucket list of countries to visit, having read a lot of books set there... the best being My Name is Red, by Orhan Pamuk.
I did watch a fun and fairly good show called The Turkish Detective- police procedural based on a book series - good for a one time watch.

Yes I tried about three Turkish Dramas with friends of mine two yrs ago but I do agree...they are waay too dramatic in action and often in acting. The characters sometimes dip into the dark tasteless & more violent edge of revenge and love relationships. Worse still, I've forgotten the stories completely.

The only one that I could watch is The Gift. It was a good watch, made me go on a rabbit hole about Göbeklitepe, the ending I remember was something I didn't expect but I do not remember.
I saw one movie too, Miracle at cell Nr. 7. Very well done, cried a lot. Of course I learned afterwards that it is a remake of a kdrama.
I tried to watch Diriliş: Ertuğrul (Resurrection: Ertuğrul), I think I lasted a season or two.
As a kid I watched many Turkish dramas and movies ( Romania has a large Turkish minority and they could travel and bring many things from there that we couldn't find; one of those items were VHS tapes with Turkish movies. I don't remember many but a lot of them were tragic at that time.)
For me the Indian ones are even more over the top, and very creative, specially when the men are fighting (my husband is a huge fan).

Just started Friendly Rivalry on a whim. It was a late addition to both Netflix and Viki. 2 episodes in and it’s surprisingly GOOD.
GL. Which is kinda a first for me.
It reminds me of Hee-Do and Yu-Rim of 25-21, but minus the boys and crank up the GL to 11.

I was so excited to finally start watching MOONLOVERS yesterday as I have time to "be sad" for a while! And, I have to say, I am not feeling it. Now, to be fair, I have only finished 3 episodes, but I'm not sure if I should keep going OR switch to TANGERINES as I have not watched that yet. Using up my free sad days so I need to decide. 😩

Same here. I was super excited when Viki finally got moonlovers- but I could barely get through the first 2 episodes. It feels like an earlier era where things were less polished and dare I say it- kinda cringy and over acted. Just my opinion. I’m sure many will disagree.
When Life Gives You Tangerines
Holy hell, it’s on a completely different level. The acting, the production values, the depth of storytelling…it’s just all turned up to 11. There will be tears, but not all are sad tears. Joyful tears, proud tears, pain tears, triumphant tears, miscommunication tears.
The only thing in common between these two shows is IU. She has come a long long way since Moonlovers.

Agree, cringy is the word. It may just be the era, and that I am used to the more modern polished dramas. I do love sageuks, and I have wanted to watch this for so long as I feel it is sort of a rite of passage for kdrama lovers. I started watching in 2019, so this was before my "time" and I have been trying to watch as many of the oldies as possible while still keeping up with today! So, I'll see. I may try a few more episodes.
And, I will definitely watch WLGYT!!

I don't agree that is the era because is fairly recent, 2016. From comments I learned thatat the time it was completely overshadowed by another sageuk that was not only cheaper to produce but also less promoted, Love in the Moonlight. I watched that one a couple of years ago and I loved it. Interesting that both leaders from each of those two rival dramas are the leads in WLGYT.

I lasted 5 episodes and I thought it was something wrong with me since a lot of benies here were happy that it was available on Viki. So I checked the recaps of the first episodes and the last one and I am happy that I found out that I am still OK because many felt the same, including the writers. One observation was that there were over 400 posts in the first one and over 1200. I liked reading the comments, I regret not watching kdramas at that time and I wish more of those early beanies would comment again. It was also pre fanwall, a lot more people were gathering in the recaps and not having private chats on their walls.

Interesting about the number of comments! I have only read the first few. I know that the ending was very disappointing for most beanies.
Agree about regretting not watching dramas sooner. Which is why I try really hard to watch as many of the older ones as possible.

I had no expectations of the drama at all - only watched it last week on a whim after seeing it refered to in recent comments - and maybe for that reason enjoyed it to the end. There were many glaring flaws particularly in editing and some characters, esp Eun, were annoying, but for me there was something addictive about the series and I couldn't stop watching!

I checked out My girl after your previous post and I enjoyed it a lot. I loved the FL, how she made the boys regret their words was priceless. It was also funny to watch the fashion at that time, the hair, the cell phones, furniture.

I just finished it last night! LJG's hair is a sight to behold - perfect elf! I watched My Girl also on a whim since I wanted to see him in something completely different. I also really like LDW even though he always seems to play a version of the same character ^^. It was my first time seeing the FL Lee Da Hae and I thought she was just tops. And thankfully I never hated 2FL, or anyone else in the show for that matter.

Lee Joon-Ki's works have spanned so many genres. Some of my favourites? 'Scholar Who Walks the Night' (2015) a fantasy, Joseon Historical romance. He plays a 'Guardian Vampire' who falls for a noblewoman who is taken by powerfully evil (yet quite sexy) Vampire played by Lee Soo-Hyuk. Also loved Joon-qi in 'Two Weeks' (2013) He's a small time gambler who breaks ties with his pregnant girlfriend as he goes to jail, only to learn 5yrs later that his daughter needs a bone marrow transplant in two weeks. But he's been framed again which means he must hide for two weeks from both the police as well as the gang out to kill him in order to make it back in time for her surgery. It's the story of a feckless man who 'grows through what he goes through' while he's on the lam, trying to buy enough time to save his precociously cute but very sick daughter who's never met him before. I've watched it three times; the tension feels so real. Finally, the "Flower of Evil" where Joon-qi plays another flawed character fighting hard to keep himself from evil...again for the sake of his 6yr old daughter and his wife...who's a detective on the trail of a serial killer. His fight to hold onto his humanity is one of his best roles. Really worth the watch.

Right before reading your comment I was enjoying him in Arang and the Magistrate. I am at episode. 4 and I am hooked. It was on my list to watch for some time, a lot of beanies were recommending it in the past. And since it seems like it is a sageuk dry season, Scholar Who Walks the Night will be next. For some reason it took a lot to warm up to him, I kept avoiding watching the dramas he was in. So I really appreciate your comment, seems like I will go on a LJK drama marathon.

@kodra Great to hear you'll try out some of LJK's old-but-gold series. I started Kdramas in 2015 and after watching 796 dramas so far, the stories begin to blur, but there are still some that resonate. Wasn't a big fan of his crime procedurals: 'Lawless Lawyer' & 'Criminal Minds' but at some point I'll get around to 'Gunman in Joseon' (2014) a historical action hero drama, then watch the last one he did in (2023 ) Arthdal Chronicles, season two, which was Korea's first "ancient fantasy drama" that takes place in the Bronze Age. Lee Joon Ki took over from Song Joong-ki as the ML. I hear it wasn't popular in Korea but Netflix viewers liked it. I'm interested in the plot because Netflix, as per usual, left season one at a critical point in the story and I want to know how it will end. Changing MLs between seasons is never really a magic charm for a series though. So Kodra...it seems, like you, I will too will be indulging in a bit of an LJK marathon this summer. Cheers...
