Weekly Squee #3

Welcome to your weekly chat space for all things that bring out the squee. With plenty of spaces to vent and share about dramas — good, bad, or ugly — this thread is dedicated to that uniquely positive punch of excitement brought on by unexpected cameos, the Episode-8 first kiss, and all other too-close encounters by an OTP.

Consider it a cozy place to sit back, take a breather, and open up about the latest drama moment that sent you into a foot-stomping, mouth-covering fit of squeals.

And if you’re squeeing about non-drama-related stuff, hey, throw it in there. We could all use a happy story and rush of feels to keep us smirking throughout the day.

So, what are you squeeing about this week?

Beware of spoilers below!

All week I was squeeing abt GeumSeop pairing and for Kim Seon Ho in particular and WLGYT in whole. I liked Kim Seon Ho a lot in HomeCha, hear a little abt scandal and how it was resolved and missed him a lot, so seeing him in WLGYT was a very pleasant surprise for me. I watched 10 times 9-12 eps during last week and then Friday just killed me off. I am obsessed. I am in awe and I am just can't describe how I liked this drama. I couldn't seems to find kdrama that I liked in past few months and unexpectadly this slice of life with drop of romance made wonders to me.
I was thinking why it did so much impact to me and mb part of it that it was first time when I jumped on right ship (damn you Reply series and all tears when I 3 times jumped on wrong ship LOL).
Anyway I am enjoying and squeling at my obsession.

I also found out today from IU interview, that they had only ~10 filming sessions and I am dumbfounded how amathing both of them are. Chemistry was so natural I a at awe at their talent and hardwork.

Wait, 3 times? So '97, '94, and '88? Or do you maybe mean Chilbongie, Sun-woo, and Jung-hwan? Thankfully, my ship only sunk once #TeamJunghwan (and now twice with Tangerines).

I personally hated Reply 1997's love triangle and wondered why we were even looking for the husband when there was only one obvious choice.

I will argue a little bit with you. He needed to defence GM when her classmates blackmouthed her behind her back... As CS did before his ex gf...
He only loved her, but didn't understand her and can't propwrly stand for her... Unfortunately to him

2

I agree with you. Or like Geum-myeong's college friend (her maid of honor?) for defending her against the mean girl. But I thought Chung-seop using his ex-girlfriend's lack of education as an insult was kinda rude especially for someone he once loved.

4

After she insulted him fo God knows how long so much his jab wasn't that bad😅

1

When Geum-myeong almost died from carbon monoxide poisoning, why was Chung-seop kneeling with his girlfriend in front of her dad with a box of orange drinks? I thought they were back together and he was asking her dad for his blessing.

3

IDK why I can't answer to your comment it didn't have Reply button anyway. It wasn't a drinks it was Spam (as GM suggest him to bring for last attemt to save this unfinished love). Spam was quite expensive back then and considered luxury after Korean war. Koreans still like it. Netflix subs suck big time (as person who have 4 lvl of Korean Netflix subs makes me very sad) Anyway back to topic. When they were eating kuksu she give him advice basically if he really want to win her over, bring as a gift Spam and ask her hand in marriage, but as we can see he already had feeling for GM bcs of his phrase that every human have dark thoughts/side. But he anyway decided to try and fbring to conclusion dragging story with his ex. But as we saw GM's poisoning got on the way and 100% after he helped to save her he undersrood that he is in big trouble, oi he fall in love with her but alas she have bf... I like in WLGYT that it have so many detailes and you need be very atrentive and understand undercurrents of what they are saying and bcs of this as I already said Netflix subs makes me very sad :(

2

Win her over I mean win his ex gf back.

1

My fault, the box very clearly said the word "SPAM" and was blue. I remembered the color incorrectly and should've rewatched the scene before I commented.

4

Kim Seon-ho was great in Tangerines! I couldn't believe how unrecognizable he was with long hair and a long face. (And the glasses, of course.) It's not that all his other characters I've seen were smiley--the one he played in Start-Up was kind of petulant!--but usually he's very animated. I realized that he, too, does a lot of his acting with his voice.

The people who do the subtitles for these shows so I can listen to the actors' original voices--even when I think they veer off track a little, I appreciate them so much. My whole k-drama fandom has been one long reflection about how acting works. There's so much to it! Subtitlers are in my pantheon with archivists and people who can explain how to do things and community gardeners and people who play traditional instruments.

He is an incredible actor! I found out that he was actually returned with the movie The Childe in 2023 and received New Actor's award for this at Buil and Grand Bell and rightlully so.
I didn't despise subtitle creators it is just making me sad bcs in dramas like WLGYT nuiansess in dialogue is very important. From top of my head it was lost in translation that GM's adivised CS's take SPAM and go to his ex's parents and say to them they want to be together. Or when cinema owner said to CS that he arranged seat right next to GM for him (옆자리) and many more...

While I'm working on the draft of my usual weekend essays (so much to rant, ugh!), I think I should give yall a small music treat, from not-so-purely-coincidentally the same show my man is currently filming as latest season's main cast - THE TREASURED VOICE. Still need to dig more regarding concept in details, but this seems to be duo performances competition with a panel of judges for extra kick? Anyway, I always love me a fiery duo stage, and this one is exactly that, namely in terms of vocals and chemistry. Don't care much about choreo tho - there is swag and there is SWAG, and these two clearly went for the latter, which is not to my tastes, but good for them feeling it lol.

Without further ado, the "we're still on his topic" guy Tan Jianci and Wang Feifei (you may know her from 2nd gen kpop group Miss A) covering Miriam Yeung's "Kissing everywhere" (did I mention that I LOVE OG song? trust me to insta-love every single horny banger out there, no matter the language), proving the thesis that Cantonese is sexy:

Geez. Maybe I watched this too early in the morning. Once again making me miss Melody Journey's high quality performance values. Whoever came up with that stage lighting must have been watching disco videos or something. Just give this good duo a pair of microphones, and let em rip.

Anyway, midweek offering is much appreciated...feeling better?

Maybe production wanted to flex their lightning equipment or something?))) This was ~5 years ago, but certainly feels even more dated, looks suspiciously alike to stages my kpop faves once had during their side China gig in 2013... Glimpsed few other of his collabs on the show, and this was pretty much standard as long as any choreo was involved. Hopefully they upgraded the tech side ever since - I need one less thing to worry about for Ning-ge's sake after what I read regarding this program last night...

Thanks, now I do)))

Very good, this context helps but it still is a poor showing except interesting re: Tan Jian Ci in live performance. Got talent.

Looking forward to Friday with Gikata, as another RL brutal week draws to a close.

I'll look up a more refined stage for the next week then. There's got to be something pleasing for eyeballs besides the performer himself out there, right?

OK, noted, will try to make tomorrow's funnier then.

No pressure, really. I just enjoy your zest and that's really good enough.

I am squeeing over the leads of My Marvelous Fable... what a marvellous little gem of a drama. I am loving the 2 leads, and their chemistry is superb. I don't even know if there's any romance in it, but they're just really, really, good together, as the idiosyncratic author and the straight foil (Reminds me of my fave show, which I don't want to think about right now, whatever)

Wow, I just looked at the trailer and I like the vibe it’s a road movie, romance is definitely in it. Usually you get the whole drama summarised in the credits, but the trailer was pretty comprehensive. Bonus its only 15 episodes it looks like a fun watch. I will add to my watchlist.

Oh it's a Matryoshka doll of a drama. It's a bit weird, and very stylish, and pretty deep, too. It's completely different from any Cdrama I've seen, and I am throughly enjoying it. Hope you do too, and let me know what you think!

I watched it last year and I really enjoyed it. It was my first time watching Miles Wei and I thought he was very charismatic and played very well this smexy nerd.

The stories were weird and funny, but my favorite was the one about the ML's real past.

Yes, I've always seen Miles Wei in run of the mill Cdramas, so it was very refreshing to see him not taking himself seriously in this one. I'm also watching him as second lead in Flourishing Peony, but I'm only on ep 2 of that. He's a good actor, as proven by these two, and I'm glad he's taking on unconventional roles. The FLs in both are also so strong.

Yay!! My most anticipated drama of 2025, the upcoming C-drama, Zang Hai Zhuan (https://mydramalist.com/56835-cang-hai-xi-lin), has passed censorship review and acquired it's streaming & airing license! I'm hopeful it'll actually stream & air in 2025, since it's one of-- if not THE-- drama network's most anticipated S+ level drama of 2025 and I'm sure the production and network (YOUKU in conjunction with CCTV) want to share it with audiences ASAP so it can also receive it's ROI with all the sponsorships I'm sure the drama will easily garner with all the names attached to the project. Since the licensing has now been handed out, I guess it'll just be a matter of time before confirmation comes in as to when the drama will really come to audiences. Yet, as with all C-dramas-- because I've been spurned before-- I won't believe anything until I can physically press 'play' on Episode 1 of the drama and see the opening credits playing in front of my eyes. The life of a C-drama fan, I guess XD

Yea, and from what I understand, the network airing it on tv gets priority and all the say in contract terms, even when working with the producing network. So we’ll see. I just hope that CCTV doesn’t screw around like how 🥭 likes to screw around whenever they work with a streaming platform for the same drama

Sorry to be stupid, but is this another series subject to the cutting floor re: # of episodes?

Required fields are marked *

No! There’s never a stupid inquiry/question 😊 I’m always here to help
I don’t recall the production ever saying what they hope the final episode count of the drama to be, so they very well could have accounted for the fact that they’d get approved for 30/40 episodes from the get-go. Typically, a Cdrama production will have a set number of episodes in their mind in the midst of production (filming) so they will typically plan and film to have 30% more footage available and prepared, lest something does happen and plans change and they do have to cut/edit footage and shave down the episode count. With that said, since it seems this drama planned for 30-40 episodes from the get-go, they’ve probably filmed enough footage equal to 50-ish episodes. Since this seems to be the drama’s very first round passing censorship review, things typically won’t change anytime soon and there won’t be any need for anymore editing at this stage. The only time and reason a Cdrama will have to go back for censorship review—and a possible edit and/or episode cut— is when its current airing & streaming license runs out and it needs to renew. A drama’s tv airing license & online streaming license is usually effective for 1-year, this is why I hope and really want it to acquire a time slot to air and stream asap (outside the fact that the drama is starring my Chinese bias lol). I’m not so worried about the drama receiving a good ROI, because with the cast that it has, a good ROI won’t be a problem 😊 I have pretty good confidence this drama is good to go, as drama productions which aim to air on tv—regardless of simultaneous online streaming— have the highest criteria to meet for it to get a pass at the censorship review—which this drama has already received a passing grade for—as the government sees that dramas which air on tv are for a general audience (a.k.a. Families with small children will also tune in) and the content of the drama needs to be able to meet that need (e.g. need to have some sort of teachable moment or message, can’t be too violent, has to align with the country’s deep principles of Confucianism):

1. The Three Fundamental Bonds and Five Constant Virtues: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Fundamental_Bonds_and_Five_Constant_Virtues

2. The Three Obediances & Four Virtues: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Obediences_and_Four_Virtues

2

So much good information, thank you for taking the time! Really. And, because I know you have a fondness for the lead actor here, just a (smiling) reminder that ROI is French for "King". Fitting, no?

2

I’m always happy to help! 😊

Really?? I was thinking with more of a business and communications mindset— the latter, which is what my education is— and my mind automatically goes to “Return on Investment” whenever I see “ROI” 😂

2

Squee probably isn't the exact word I would use, but I enjoyed reading an article about Choi Dae-Hoon today. It reminded me that he's been a favorite since I first saw him in CLOY. Didn't realize he was in Tangerines, so now adding to the pull of IU I really have to start up my Netflix subscription again to watch that drama!
Speaking of IU, I started watching Moon Lovers since there seem to be a lot of beanies watching it now. I'm liking it a lot despite the writing not always being up to the skill of the actors. The costumes and settings are gorgeous. And I'm seeing the appeal of Lee Joon-Gi which was missing for me in Flower of Evil, which I dropped about 3/4 of the way through. Also didn't care for the FL in that one.

I finished When Life Gives You Tangerines this week. I cried so much! I also reflected that I would have cried about different things had I seen this show when I was younger. I loved it. I guess I will save my many dorky insights for the last recap or something, since I think it's only squee if you squeed. (Though I did squee when I saw photos of the characters from the drama on a museum style banner on the Haenyo Museum--which is of course a real place.)

Not a squee. I'm not really sure what a squee is? New word.

It took several weeks for this story to break through to the mainstream American media. It was covered earlier this week on Variety and this morning, the New York Times. As a parent, I hope this cautionary tale informs the South Korean public that all those involved deserve mercy. Zero tolerance for being out of social order is incurably stupid.
