To be or not to be Hongrang is the question for Lee Jae-wook
by tccolb
A new poster and teaser set have dropped on Netflix, making us puzzle over the true identity of our Dear Hongrang – played by a shadowy Lee Jae-wook (The Impossible Heir) – and how he came to the doorstep of the wealthy merchant Shim family, announcing himself to be the family’s long lost son.
Ever since 12 years ago, the Shims had been hopelessly waiting after the child Hong-rang mysteriously disappeared and the trailer begins with the now adult Hong-rang’s (Lee Jae-wook) miraculous return – though he alleges amnesia about what happened. Mom Eom Ji-won (For Eagle Brothers) is convinced he’s her son and insists that he’s properly reinstated as their family heir. However, the more she sees him, half-sister Jo Boa (Destined With You) feels certain that this Hong-rang is a fraud and, to her credit, we do see that Hong-rang is hiding secrets.
Adopted brother Jung Ga-ram (Gangnam B-Side) thus steps in, requesting dad Park Byung-eun (Hyper Knife) to dig into Hong-rang’s missing past and verify the truth. In the action sequence that follows, we get a curious glimpse of our story’s Joseon prince and presumably he’ll have an invested role in this mystery-sageuk’s tale, because one does not cast Kim Jae-wook (Melo Movie) to simply look pretty and sit still. Elsewhere, Hong-rang is busy fending off assailants and rushing to the rescue of his maybe sister Jae-yi (Jo Boa). Toeing the line into fauxcest romance, the teaser then closes on a wintry scene with our two leads.
With production for the novel adaptation led by PD Kim Hong-sun (Bait, Money Heist – Joint Economic Area) and writer Kim Jin-ah (Dr. Brain), Netflix’s Dear Hongrang will be premiering on May 16 in just two more weeks.

Sounds delish. I'm in...but will wait until I can take a nice long sip of six episodes before playing the waiting game every week!

I think they may be dropping this all at once...

Hard to say with Netflix.
Resident Playbook was piece-meal.
Melo Movie was single drop....
Weak Hero 2 was single drop....
There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason so who knows? 😁

Netflix Originals have all been single drop except When Life Gives You Tangerines.
Resident Playbook is a tvN drama and not a Netflix Original.
Melo Movie, Weak Hero Class 2, and Dear Hongrang are all Netflix Originals.

I don't know - I have a different theory. I noticed that streaming services would drop less-than-good TV shows all at once. The good, bridgeable ones -- they'd drop two episodes at time or piece-meal to retain their subscribers longer (because they wait each week for a next batch of episodes.) If Netflix deemed Hongrang to be a quality show, I think they'll drop it 2 episodes at a time.

Yes, panshel is right, there are different classes of "Netflix Original". They put that label on their own original programming (which I call Netflix Originals and which generally come out all at once or in two parts) but they also put it on shows that they have licensed exclusively (which I call Netflix Exclusives). So they look the same, but anything that drops two episodes a week is just licensed. They do occasionally have legit Netflix Originals that come out in more than one drop, like Tangerines, and I think they are moving more in that direction for dramas that have more than 10ish episodes (it helps build anticipation for the next parts to have a short pause), but most of their dramas still come out at once. Someone made a list of all the true Netflix Originals on My Drama List if you're interested! https://mydramalist.com/list/1VKEXjJL

@bomibeans Disney+ drops two episodes a week (Hyper Knife, Moving) but never Netflix, and IMO, some Netflix Originals are good, quality shows.
I was wrong because besides Tangerines, The Glory, Gyeongseong Creature, and Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area were also not single drops, but they were released in two parts with half of the episodes at one time.
I agree with @zindigo that Hongrang will be a single drop.

@Unaspirated I think the easiest way to tell is does the drama air on television? If it does (Resident Playbook, Heavenly Ever After), then it's not a Netflix Original.
@uhni0317 can also use Wikipedia (shows that have ended) in case MyDramaList isn't updated.

@panshel I was looking for that other link but couldn't find the list of ended shows!
For me, it can be tricky to tell what will actually air on TV before the drama premieres, so paying attention to the first part of all the DB announcements is super key. This one only mentions Netflix releasing promos, not a network, so it's a Netflix Original ✅ and there is only one premiere date, so it's likely a single drop! ✅

Big fan of both male and female leads.
Fingers crossed this is nothing like his last atrocity otherwise known as The Impossible Heir......
I thought I would next see Jo Boa in Disney's Knock Off, but apparently that release got postponed so here we are.......

“one does not cast Kim Jae-wook to simply look pretty and sit still.”
Let me remind you of that Cop Drama with Taecyeon, where KJW was cast as a Ghost and had NO speaking parts. I’m pretty sure his sad eyes then weren’t acting.
Back to this drama, i’m excited to see Jae Wook again in a period piece. I hope they have gorgeous costumes for the cast.

😂 One recognizes a veteran beanie when they lament about KJW having no speaking parts!😂 This was THE gripe on DB for so long that it is still the first thing I remember whenever he is mentioned! 😂

Even i who came for Taec thought it was seriously criminal to waste KJW’s talent like that. Esp when poor Taec was still so green as a lead that time.

😂😂😂 yea ideally if he had speaking parts, he wouldn’t look like a tragically wet ghost all the time. Maybe a dry flashback to happier times.

Let me add my voice to a chorus to say that Kim Jae-wook is criminally underutilized in the K-entertainment industry.

I completely forgot about Who Are You. Thank you (but no thank you😅) for reminding me of that atrocity done to Kim Jae-wook in the past. May it NEVER happen again 🙏... Although, one could argue that KJW still stole that show despite not having any lines 😏 (no shade at Taecyeon, I do like him too hehe)

And what's interesting about this sageuk, is that this is a pretty unique concept in sageuks (granted I'm not a sageuk connoisseur, so there might be some other ones with this premise.) I'm looking forward to explore more of this set-up (instead of boring palace politics) but seeing how they also involved Prince for some reason dampens my high expectations.

May is looking busy! This creeped up on me. I am curious and will try to tune in if it's not a single drop... but it's on Netflix so it probably is. >_<"
I didn't catch Kim Jae Wook's recent drama and it seems rare to see him in a sageuk so I'm excited for this role.

"because one does not cast Kim Jae-wook (Melo Movie) to simply look pretty and sit still."
But one could cast Kim Jae-wook to simply look pretty and sit still, because we would all still watch for the pretty. It's so so pretty.
I guess we all know that dude isn't her half-brother because the poster is giving romance. I guess the mystery is "who is he really and what happened to the real half-brother?"

"Toeing the line into fauxcest romance"
Oh the HUGE white elephant in the room. I wonder how they'll get around this. Either Hongrang is indeed a legitimate heir, or our poor Jo Boa is not a 50/50 daughter at all but 100 percent illegitimate/adopted.

Since we know now that royal family is involved, my money's on that he's a (secret?) prince assuming missing bro's identity to save his life from throne-greedy relatives' pursuit. Would it even be truly kdrama if they somehow come up with a different solution?)))

Is fauxcest fully back in vogue in kdramaland? Given the genre, it likely won't go was as
deep and rawfar with it as BURIED HEARTS recently did, which is a pity. Oh well, maybe there will be an actual plot to tune in for instead... one can hope!Required fields are marked *

Not really - the whole fauxcest suspicion there lasted like 1 episode. I meant more in a sense of first introducing very hot and actively sexual couple half-
strokestep away from shotgun wedding and then suddenly go "wait, they may be half-siblings actually, whoopsie" at eleventh hour. It made no sense narratively and no viewer in their right mind was fooled either, but the sheer audacity! Felt like watching something made in mid-2000's again)))Required fields are marked *

May 16 can’t come soon enough! Everything I’ve read about the novel is perfect for a historical K-drama junkie like me who loves stories about rebellion against class oppression. I hope the script adaptation lives up to it, and the trailer makes it look like it will.

Oh this is looking better and better...dark and moody and very picturesque. Plus KJW!! I like when they cast a historical show with people that don't have very "modern" faces (for lack of a better word). And also when the FL is fierce and can optionally wield a sword... I recently saw the trailer for Our Blooming Youth and am planning on visiting it for precisely this reason.
