The Haunted Palace: Episodes 3-4
by mistyisles
Our almost-shaman and her imoogi nemesis have their work cut out for them if they’re going to drive out the evil spirits haunting the palace. Nevertheless, they’re not about to back down from the challenge — even if their reasons for doing so aren’t always exactly aligned.
EPISODES 3-4
The gigantic evil spirit possessing the young prince has many names — including but probably not limited to “Colossal Shadow” and (to a certain blind shaman) “Celestial General” — but whatever you call it, Yeo-ri is determined to save Gab’s soul from its clutches and return him to his body. Her hopes rise when she sees Gab’s ghost fleeing through the palace grounds but fall when the Colossal Shadow grabs him by the throat and drags him back into… well, the shadows.
Kang-cheol has to hold Yeo-ri back from following, and only then does she realize he knew about the Colossal Shadow all along. That’s why he tried to dissuade her from coming to the palace in the first place. She’s less willing to believe Gab also knew and lied about his reason for bringing her here, but even that is getting harder for her to deny.
Speaking of things being hard to believe, Kang-cheol makes absolutely zero effort to convincingly act as Gab, even before the king. Showing deference to human rulers? That’s beneath him. Having any sort of manners at all? Unnecessary. The king’s plan to abolish the slave system? A pipe dream he openly scoffs at (Gab, in contrast, had wept with gratitude and pledged his undying support).
Though the king can’t deny the insightfulness buried in Kang-cheol’s cynicism, he rightly struggles to believe that amnesia could cause the kind of personality transplant “Gab” appears to have undergone. For now, though, he focuses on observing Kang-cheol and investigating the attack on Gab. He correctly identifies the culprit — MINISTER OF WAR KWAK SANG-CHOONG (Yoon Seung) — but lacks the evidence to outright accuse him, and Kang-cheol pretends he doesn’t remember what happened that day.
While Kang-cheol is thus occupied, Yeo-ri prepares a ritual to trap the Colossal Shadow with herself as bait. Upon successfully luring the spirit (still inhabiting the young prince’s body) out of the palace, she offers exactly what she’s denied Kang-cheol: to serve the Colossal Shadow as her guardian spirit. The spirit accepts, and while they perform the ritual dance to seal their bond, she secretly closes a rope circle around them. Unfortunately, the spirit catches on before she can finish. Kang-cheol leaps to her defense in the nick of time, only to be interrupted again by the king and his guards, here to rescue the prince.
In the standoff that ensues, Yeo-ri succeeds in expelling the spirit from the prince’s body, and Kang-cheol jumps in front of an arrow that was aimed at her (he barely even reacts, and leaves it sticking out of his chest for the rest of what follows). The Colossal Shadow isn’t beaten so easily, however, and burns through Yeo-ri’s binding ropes to take a new host — the king. Thus far, he’d been protected by the ward stone in his glasses, but Yeo-ri borrowed it for her ritual and now he’s defenseless. The spirit possesses the king and fights Kang-cheol, but eventually Kang-cheol’s lightning powers and Yeo-ri’s knives win out. It’s a temporary victory, but for now everyone returns to the palace safely.
Yeo-ri patches Kang-cheol up while they await the king’s judgment for their actions. When the king demands answers first, Kang-cheol freely confirms that Gab is dead (at Minister Kwak’s hand) and that he’s simply using Gab’s body. Still, thanks to the prince’s testimony, the king pardons both Kang-cheol and Yeo-ri. At the end of the day, he’s a desperate father who almost lost his son, did lose a loyal subject, and temporarily lost himself to something he doesn’t want to believe is even real.
The king isn’t the only one who softens toward Kang-cheol. Now that it’s clear he didn’t kill Gab, Yeo-ri offers Kang-cheol a deal: if he’ll help her save Gab, she’ll accept him as her guardian spirit. Kang-cheol does still want that, but his initial response is to scoff (Really? NOW you’ll do it? After I begged you for thirteen years??) and storm off down the road.
The next day, they’re busy haggling over what rituals she must perform and exactly how much pumpkin taffy she owes him when the king’s guards arrest them. Yes, they’ve been pardoned for yesterday, but shamanism is still technically illegal and more of Yeo-ri’s ritual objects have been found in the woods — AFTER the guards cleaned up the site. That’s a banishable offense, and banished they are, with only a small bag of money to help them relocate. Kang-cheol complains about the small sum, but doesn’t tell Yeo-ri he intentionally put the ritual objects back out last night so they’d be forced to leave the palace.
To be fair, that is an effective way to get her out before the Colossal Shadow can return. And Kang-cheol earns more favor in Yeo-ri’s sight when he scares a tiger away and admits it’s far from the first time he’s protected her from tiger attacks. He insists he only looks out for her because he needs her to ascend as a dragon, but it sounds less convincing now than it used to. Especially if you factor in the way he blushes every time she gets too close.
In any case, Yeo-ri decides to visit a monk who has her grandmother’s old ritual objects. The meeting starts out a little rocky (another elderly monk steals Kang-cheol’s precious pumpkin taffy stash and Kang-cheol gets knocked clean out before Yeo-ri can step in and make introductions), but ultimately the monk welcomes them both and promises to help dig up the ritual objects.
That’s as far as Yeo-ri and Kang-cheol get this week, but remember that blind shaman who refers to the Colossal Shadow as a Celestial General? He’s been plotting alongside the Queen Dowager to keep the spirit confined to the young prince’s body so that her son, GRAND PRINCE YOUNG-IN (Kim Sun-bin), can claim the throne instead.
When Yeo-ri and Kang-cheol drive the spirit out, however, the Queen Dowager decides to leave off meddling with spirits — she carries trauma from some earlier incident, and anyway the grand prince is horrible and constantly causes problems she has to clean up. Like, for example, sexually assaulting that poor maid who went on to drown herself and become Yeo-ri’s new ghost friend in the well. After Yeo-ri helps the well ghost release some of her grudge by almost drowning the grand prince, he retaliates by attacking her surviving family members. Then, before the well ghost can take proper revenge and become a full-fledged evil spirit herself, the Colossal Shadow returns to the palace and chooses the grand prince as its new host. But judging from Yeo-ri’s vision, he’s not going to be a *living* host much longer.
At this point in the story, I’m not sure if I hope Yeo-ri will be able to save Gab or if she’ll spend the rest of the show falling romantically for Kang-cheol. Gab seemed like such a sweet person and solid support for her, even if he did lie to her, but Yeo-ri and Kang-cheol do make a fantastic ghostbusting team. But I do hope they’ll be back in the palace before too long, because I’d love to see them convince the king to join them in their fight against evil.

I am not surprised by the chemistry displayed between Yeo RI and Kang Cheol. After all he did stalk/follow her for many years. In a sense he may even know her better than she knows herself. He probably knows all her qualms and nuances by heart. I am invested in how these two will develop their relationship over the course of the story....

I’ve already made clear, last week, where I stand: Yeo Ri should, without a doubt, choose the imoogi. But, listen, I totally understand why she is torn, because Gab is an archivist.
As someone who worked in archives to support himself through grad school, I totally get it. If I had a dollar for how many women described me as “smexy”when I was an archivist (as a DB commentator described Gab this weekend) I wouldn’t have more dollars than I do now, but I would know that I SHOULD have. A LOT of dollars. In fact, I think all archivists are smexy!
So obviously, I understand why Yeo-ri believes the archivist is “THE ONE.” Who, but archivists, know how all relationships should be “acid-free” and how love is best “filed away” to be preserved forever!
But, I have to admit, Gab was/is boring, and even as a kid he was a bit hard to take. I don’t understand Yeo-ri’s love, especially when a much more charismatic Kang Cheol is before her. Only Kang Cheol really knows her. Of course, I know well that at the end of the show, we will have Kang Cheol soaring away in the sky as a dragon and Yeo Ri and Gab embracing. But it doesn’t mean I’ll embrace Yeo-Ri’s relationship with Gab!
The only consolation for me: this show recognizes archivists as “smexy” even when they are nearly dead and swallowed by the Colossal Shadow! (In other words, when they are in their late 60s.)

As a former history graduate student, I agree with your assessment of archivists. (My partner is a librarian with a different specialty, so I can no longer wax eloquent about the supremacy of archivists over all other librarians.)
I think Kang Cheol is endgame because he's the one who just realized that having a body is awesome. Gab is a sweet good person but he's so polite because he's used to have taste buds and a sense of smell and a pulse and various other bits and bobs. He doesn't want to lie on a heated floor like the magical lizard he is, and hug warm good-smelling ladies and so on. He wants to reform society and be moral. Yeo Ri doesn't even have to try to be the best person in the room as is visible from space if you're already dead.

Quite sure her infatuation with Gap is because of her childhood and how she was treated...He was the only one not afraid to approch her,be kind to her and even wanting to take her with his family...Of course she will be all moony eyes over him seeing him as the absolute best.
Now her journey will be to realize her prejudice against Lang Cheol and toss it aside and actually see the people around her with a proper lense.

this drama is actually really good. it's not prestige television, but it's very gripping & entertaining in a pulpy horror/adventure kinda way. I thought the first 2 eps were good, if a little low energy, but eps. 3 & 4 were genuinely so riveting, I was glued to the screen!! i hope they keep up this energy.
Gang-cheol is so goofy and badass at the same time. in a drama that's otherwise very grim, the sheer joy and rapture he has with food (same bro). it's nice to Yeo-ri see slowly begin to see him as not totally selfish and antagonistic.
Yeo-ri is also so cool! she's competent, brave and willing to do the right thing while not going too far...
is it weird that I wanted to see a friendship form with Yeo-ri and the well ghost?? god, fuck that prince, I hope she drowns him... poor lady was about to let go of her rage and sorrow... period dramas rarely dwell on the consequences of a society where the 1% ruled like gods and could anything they liked with the common people.

I was low-key hoping well-ghost would drown him also. I mean, I guess it's better that she was stopped so that she doesn't become a full-on evil spirit, but sometimes going around haunting people who deserve it seems like a pretty good gig to me.

I don’t think the prince will stick around being a living little sh*thead for long if we are to believe Yeo-ri’s vision. Admittedly, the vision didn’t come with a timestamp, but I’m eagerly waiting for it to come true.

I continue to enjoy this show! I really like Kang-cheol and Yeo-ri, and I know which ship I’m on. 🥳 (Sorry Gab!)
The backstory of the well ghost was unbearable and enraging. I hope she will be able to find peace in the end.
Plus, my heart suddenly broke at the very short scene when “Gab” was bickering with his mum, and after he left she got all teary-eyed and said “I wish we would have been open with each other and gotten close like this earlier…” SOB. 🥺😭 (I dunno why that got me so badly!)
Hmmm, and in the end I was wondering: did Yeo-ri end up fixing the King’s glasses? Telling his servant he should keep them close (for protection) made no sense to me since she took out the spirit ward stone… 🤔 I guess they just didn’t show she put it back?
About time she found her original spirit ward stone again. I wouldn’t even be surprised if it was found along with both of them at the bottom of that cliff… 🤔

I thought both lenses were made out of the spirit ward stone, and she just took one of them? But I'm sure she put it back in the end regardless.
I thought that scene with Gab's mom was really affecting too! Makes me wonder what their relationship has been like all this time.

Oooh, I thought only one lens was special! Must revisit - but it makes sense she just put it back.
My best guess is that Gab was politeness personified whenever he was interacting with his mum. So… one could argue she didn’t always know what he was really thinking/who he really was. 🤔 🥺 Also the fact that she doesn’t even know yet that her son has actually died struck me. 😖 *grabs tissue*

I know, she is the one person I feel really bad for. I'm not totally heartless, I'm sorry he had to die, but he seemed to know what he was getting into, and what he was up against, and his mom doesn't deserve this situation.

I do feel bad for her, but also if the end game is Gang-cheol, then she gets "her son" for longer.
It's a lie, but it is one that makes her truly happy. Besides I can imagine Gang-cheol not being as much of an a*sehole as we were let to believe and not revealing the truth to mom.
Not that I'd say it's all for the best... but actually, yes scrap that, it's all for the best because we were never supposed to mourn Gab.

I must be the only one thinking
1) Yeo ri has no appeal to me
2) Kang Cheol was kind of abusive and thus not good romantic interest
3) she should confuse gratitude with feelings towards gab
4) the spirit is not scary or convincingly a threat to anything, just let the royals roam about it is not like they can ever leave the palace.
but YSJ is a mad hatter, that much I admit. I almost expect him to grow mushrooms out of his nose.

I'm with you on something: I can't ship Yeo Ri with anyone.
The Imoogi is fun to watch, and their bickerings are entertaining, but I can't ship them because I can't see them as a romantic couple.
But I don't ship her with Gab either. They have not seen each other for several years. As you say, it's only gratitude and probably mutual admiration, but they have not shared enough time as adults, so they are not in love.

I'm having a great time with this show! (Despite being quite on edge due to CatMan's presence in another fantasy show... At least he seems like the least supernatural part of it.)
I was worried I'd feel conflicted about Gab getting erased but it turns out that A. he was pretty mid to begin with and B. he died fair and square early on! Reservations: gone. I'm super here for Kang-cheol's chaotic character, his undying wonder at how good food is, and his budding relationship with Yeo-ri. I love that we got a reveal that he's been a force for good in her life, and I wouldn't be surprised if most of the misfortunes he "caused" turned out to be exaggerated or not actually his doing. The grandmother's death is the most insurmountable one, but we didn't see any evidence that he was even there, so I'm withholding judgement until we get another flashback.
Queen Dowager is in so far over her head already! They've mentioned a few times that there are generational wrongs that attract evil spirits to innocent children; who wants to bet it was something in her generation that let the Colossal Shadow into the palace? She's obviously familiar to a certain extent. And how refreshing is it to have a King and Queen who seem like decent people, who have a good relationship with each other, and who are solid parents? It's wild how rare that is!

I really like the Royal Couple here, too. 💖 So refreshing!
And agreed: Granny’s death really seems unrelated to Kang-cheol. He was never shown in the flashbacks to that seaside festival… 🤔🤓 I suspect he got “better and better” the more time he spent in Yeo-ri’s presence. (He definitely was vicious before, at least in the intro where he ruined the rice field because “he hates humans”. 🙄)

I have only watched the first ten minutes of this show 😁 so take me theory with a heaping spoon of salt, but
How do we know that Kang Cheol ruined rice fields? As far as I understood that beginning sequence was the story granny was telling Yeo Ri, no? I know she was a shaman but we weren't shown that scene as a fact, we were told as a folklore/legend, no? Maybe he didn't even do that.

I realize I'm only watching because Kim Ji Hoon is hot.
The FL is starting to annoy me with her lack of survival skills. She'll do a little scrambling, a little kicking, but the minute she's pinned down, she just cowers and says, "This is it. This is how I die," or whatever it is she said. She did it in both episodes this week and, of course, it was an excuse for the ML to ~~save~~ her. Girl, FIGHT!
I'm not buying her love/like/infatuation with Gap (original version.) Perhaps they killed him off too quickly, because their relationship feels practically non-existent to me. Yes, they were friends when they were kids, but I was under the impression that they hadn't seen each for years. She sees him once and suddenly saving his life is her raison d'etre?
I miss the original Imoogi actor. He was hot. (I realize now that all my complaints are because the original Imoogi actor was just a cameo. We could have had him and Kim Ji Hoon on our screens. *sheds a tie* )
To end on a positive note, I really appreciated the Queen Dowager giving her pos son what was coming to him. I thought she would have been the kind to brush away his misdeeds, but she rightfully put him in his place.

I also struggle with Yeo Ri's "love" for Gab. This is a very common trope in kdramas so it's probably not fair for me to single out this drama's use of it for critique, but it's also not a trope I care for. At all. I mean, first love to me means first real relationship where your feelings are reciprocated and you date in some way. Having a sweet crush on a boy who was nice to you when you were under the age of 10 doesn't qualify.
I certainly remember boys who were nice to me when I was young, and I may even have had crushes on them at the time, but I would never call that first love; additionally, I can't imagine carrying a torch for any of them for years just based on that early interaction, especially if we no longer lived in the same area after it occurred.
In this drama it's particularly galling because Yeo Ri is ready to sacrifice herself and her own happiness for this person she only briefly knew when he was a boy. I don't care how nice and handsome he is now; their early interactions weren't love and the few minutes they spent together in the present are also not enough to fuel this kind of devotion.

I agree, I wrote in a comment below that though he may have been her first love because he sympathized with how she was treated by the villagers, his support probably stemmed from his innate sense of justice and morals and not from love.

I don't think it was love, we didn't see her being devastated by his death. It has more to do with her guilt (she thought gangcheol killed him) and withat her shaman responsibilities (we have seen her trying to rescue the lost ghosts). And sh didn' have much happiness to begin with, she decided to go to tha palace with Gab because she was tired of living alone.

I love this show because stuff actually happens. The ghost reveals her reasons for seeking vengeance and Yeo Ri helps her do something about it. The King realizes his son was possessed by an evil spirit, and that spirit probably possessed him as well. There's a big intense forest sword fight. The King now knows that Gab is not Gab, but that he probably needs his and Yeo Ri's help, even as he follows through with their banishment.
Plus, the Colossal Shadow is still out there wreaking havoc.
As for the romance, I do fear that Yeo Ri will ultimately end up with Gab, precisely because he's a) still alive and b) a good person. At the same time, her dynamic with Gang Cheol is more interesting, although of course, she has yet to develop anything resembling affectionate feelings towards him. His jealousy, on the other hand, is already present and quite hilarious, too.

I’m hoping that Yeo-ri will feel properly conflicted as she develops feelings for an imoogi, and Gab (when he’s eventually freed) will see this and cross the bridge of his own accord. Maybe with a heartfelt interaction with his mom first. Clearing the way for Gang-cheol to stay full time! If this doesn’t turn out to be what happens, it might be the fan fic I write in my head 😬

While the real Gab might've been Yeo-ri's first love because he always stuck up for her as a kid, I think he did it more out of a sense justice than a reciprocated crush. It seems he had this inflexible, moral character his whole life, which may have been one if the reasons he was always so formal with his mother. Like some other commentators wrote, it was heartrending to see Gab's mom moved to tears just because Kang-cheol acted in a bratty and childish way.

I think you very well could be right about Gab’s sense of justice, but I also understand why their friendship as kids would be so precious (and so remembered) to Yeo-ri. If he was literally the only one who was nice to her and didn’t blame her for misfortunes, it makes sense that she would have put that relationship on a pedestal and have fantasies of him coming back for her. First loves can be super flimsy in kdramas, and I don’t love this one, but I can also understand her feelings.

Things I liked this thus far:
- Yeo Ri's shaman dance and attire, she looked beautiful like a ballerina. The question remains where and how she found the tools because that was a pretty big box she was carrying. Probably she bought them.
- The acting of the little crown prince, specially the eyes. His face changed and almost did not recognize him when he was learning with the king afterwards.
- Nobody is talking about the king but we have a hot one here. Although our long hair (tail) incredible smexy hero/villain only graced our eyes for 2 episodes, I am enjoying Kim Ji-hoon very much, the royal robe suits him very well.
I have a few more but unfortunately I have to see a patient in pain and will continue later.

What else I liked:
- How realistic the evil traditional spirits are portrayed. We have the unmarried ghost spirit that, according to Wiki, is a woman wearing a white hanbok, called sobok (소복), the traditional white mourning attire with their hair down and a pale white face with dark circles. They almost always have long hair covering their faces. Another one, the "one-legged ghosts" or "Oedari dokkaebi" are a type of "Dokkaebi", which are mischievous spirits often associated with playfulness and trickery. These ones apparently are the real goblins and they originate from discarded items like brooms or clothes that are stained with blood. We are also introduced to a lesser known spirit, the Paltcheok-gwi or the eight footed ghost that has a deep-seated grudge against the royal family, apparently. The director-nim used an actor to play him and did not rely on CGI. I like how much care and detail went into bringing these characters to life. And lastly, our lovely dragon. Which, apparently, is a positive figure in korean folklore and not how I knew from my western influenced culture. Learning more about it, I don't understand why the grandma didn't want Yeo-ri to help him since if he becomes a dragon then, from what I understood, he can become the guardian of the region. In my rabbit hole searches I came across an interesting podcast with author and professor Heinz Insu Fenkl about dragons and how has influenced korean culture and history (learned about the real six flying dragons and the deep rooted tree, some interesting folklore stories and some history events). The podcast is here: https://www.koreasociety.org/arts-culture/item/534-the-meaning-of-dragons-in-korean-folklore and is an interesting piece for those wrapped up in korean mythology.
I wonder if we will see the three legged crow, the moon rabbit, the fire dog or the Korean cockatrice.
- How silly and fun possessed Gap can be.
What is intriguing me:
- What happened 13 years ago considering that this is when grandma died and has not been shown to Yeo-ri as a ghost and what happened at the royal court when the mother queen remembered the smell of the Paltcheok-gwi.
- Who is the general that holds a grudge against the royal family. One possibility could be general Nam Yi who subjugated the Rebellion of Lee Si-ae under King Sejo only to be falsely accused of treason and executed under King Yejong a few years later.
What I didn't like:
- I can't say anything bad about the drama. So far has piqued my curiosity about korean folklore, tradition and history. The casting is great, the costume are probably some of the best I have seen in a sageuk, the colors are vivid. It is fun, light and entertaining with a spin on body switch trope, having the one that you hate trapped in the body of the one you like. This recap though, I would have plenty to say but I will refrain to just say that it is as captivating as the original Gap.

The writer is obviously inspired by written and spoken stories about these mythical creatures. I am fascinating by all the fables and all the stories around them, each give us bits of ancient wisdom. I feel that this drama also celebrates old korean culture and beliefs that probably has been forgotten, probably this is why it has good rating in Korea.
The saying "Where Gangcheori goes is like spring even it is fall." it is an intriguing one because spring is actually when everything starts to grow yet. It was written in the Jibong Yuseol (1614) and when "when author Lee Soo-kwang asked an old man in the countryside about the origin of the word, the old man told him about a monster called Gangcheori that burns down everything in a few miles." (Wiki). "According to the records in "Seongho saseol" (mid-18th century), Gangcheori is a venomous dragon that like to live in swamps or lakes, and emits a powerful heat that destroys moisture and causes drought. It also brings storms, lightning, and hail to ruin crops." (also Wiki). Which I take that he might have been causing all this damage at the beginning but later learned to harness all that heat into that beam of energy with whom he was able to defeat the Paltcheok-gwi. One other way that a dragon can go to heaven is if he does a lot of good deeds while living among humans so he might not need her in the end.

I find that Yook Sung Jae has good Kim Young Kwang expression, particularly when he is smug.
The bad prince is almost too bad.

idrk where I stand with these stories that present one character, kill them off and then use another one... I've always felt like it brings trouble down the road. idk who they would as a plot device and then drop any emotional investment we have... anyways, the story so far feels action packed and the King looks like a logical one not the cartoonish versions we often get so I hope he would realize there's danger around gim
