Premiere Watch: Pump Up the Healthy Love

Time slot: Wednesday-Thursday
Broadcaster: KBS
Genre: Rom-com, sports, human
Episode count: 12
Global streamer: Viki, Disney+

Reasons to watch: Another victim of the unfortunate English title, the Korean title — 24-Hour Health Club — is a bit more palatable. However, regardless of the title we can still expect to enjoy gym rat and self-proclaimed health freak Lee Jun-young marching around giving orders to Jung Eun-ji, his latest victim client. While the topic of health, weight loss, diet restriction, and body image is rife with red flags, it’s okay because… well… we have a potentially epic OTP on our hands. And our screenwriter — of Missing Crown Prince, Bossam: Steal the Fate, and Birthcare Center makes me hopeful.

TL;DR: Ready for this Jung Eun-ji x Lee Jun-young pairing.

I can't get over Lee Jun-young's character in Weak Hero Class 2 (because I have no qualms about stanning sexy villains), so I'm super excited to see him for the fourth(!) time in three(!) months.

I simply cannot with this title. Even if I watch it and love it, how can I recommend it to other people without the level of embarrassment of a ML getting caught hiding in a closet? I will hereafter be referring to it as That Gym Drama. Or Jun’s Gym. Or 24 Hour Health Club. Or Please Don’t Wreck This Pairing For Me. Or literally anything besides its actual name 😂

I have said it before and I will say it again: I embrace the cringe. Having in the past just told my wife--"I'm going to the gym;" to be able to say "I'm going to pump up my healthy love" has put new life into my weightlifting and treadmill work, which, lets be honest, is extremely boring. I do it to stave off some of the effects of age, but its a tedious chore, and no one is interested in hearing a report about what you benched, your deadlifting that day, how many squat reps you did, etc. I can feel a yawn coming on even mentioning these things. Whereas healthy love--that's another matter!

In fact I have a significant worry that the title of this show will be the most interesting thing about it!

@hacja, “embrace the cringe”. Great attitude. I am with you there.
You also give me an incentive to get back to the gym. In RL I am shortly relocating to a condo development (leasing) with a nice fitness/weight room setup. No excuse now. Just walk down the hall (take the elevator down from the 7th floor or better yet walk down the stairs and go to the fitness room. That us the plan anyway lol.

Sure, and maybe it will be terrible and I won’t ever have to worry about it. But if it isn’t and I wanted to share my joy with anyone else, it will be harder than it would have been. If it’s a choice between recommending a drama that I liked that has a completely ridiculous title and one that I liked where the title is fine or even good, this one will never make the cut. This seems like a relevant consideration to the people making up English titles. Once again I would like to volunteer the Beanies who could provide ample feedback.

There seems to be a perversity to these absurd titles that surpass my lowest expectations. I wonder who comes up with these nonsense? The Korean titles can be ridiculous too but more often than not are infinitely better,
And, now on to my burning qn - As I no longer trust my own eyes given AI and co reimagining our reality - Was that “Mr David” (I died from laughing at that name) Lee Junyoung or was it CGI? Regardless, I love how that face of his commits to being Kooky or evil in equal measure. Mind you, I don’t like his evil ones.

I would hazard to guess that it's CGI combined with a body double. Although Lee Junyoung did do a lot of working out for the role, you don't achieve that type of physique in a few months. It takes years of dedication. There was a scene in the intro where he is standing like the statue of David, where I'm pretty sure it's more CGI. Also, he has this hilarious habit of wanting to lift his shirt to expose his abs to prove some point, and I noticed that the camera cuts off his head, so this is probably another body double. He probably packed on some muscle for this role, but not enough to pass as a dedicated gym rat/trainer/former bodybuilder.
I went back to Melo Movie, and his shoulders are noticeably broader in this new drama. My only remaining question is, is he wearing padding, or is that the result of working out for the role.
Why am I so invested in this? No clue 😆

I'm not watching this drama until it finishes airing, so I haven't seen Jun's physique here yet. Just wanted to say that it is possible as we have seen Namgoong Min bulking up as much as 22 pounds of muscle for his role in The Veil in a very short time. But he was working out almost incessantly. Did Jun even have that much free time to work out?! He has been constantly working on other dramas!

I'm as invested as you are! 😆

3

When you see it you will know it’s not real. In Mr Plankton the male leads bare figure was on show every episode. In this one it’s covered up most of the time and just looks out of proportion. They went too far showing a real body builders body but it is needed for his constant inspirational storytelling. A body where they have worked out to reduce body fat but still looks within normal range would have been a much better and more realistic achievement for a K-drama actor.

3

@reply1988 I'll take your word for it 😄

1

I know that you can put on an impressive amount of muscle in a short amount of time. Bloodhounds is a good example. But here it doesn't look quite right.

Pretty much all this happens in the first 10 minutes, so you can check it out without having to over-invest.

3

Bulking up is one thing but sculpted bulking up for bodybuilding seems impossible in a relatively short period of time.
And, you’ll see it for yourself soon!

1

It looks like padding to me when he is clothed and his head CGI’d onto a real body builders body for those award shots.

2

Required fields are marked *

You could see his real body in the last scene of episode 2, when the back of his shirt was cut of. No padding involved and his shoulders looked finally natural. I really hope, that he can get rid of it. It looks distracting.

2

You can tell it is CGI or body double, if you look at the neck. No body builder (good enough to compete in the so called well renowned Mr. David competition in this show) would have such narrow slender neck and then muscles only from the shoulder downwards!

3
reply

Required fields are marked *

I have had the same question and I have thought that it's CGI, it looks a bit too ridiculous for a normal human being, as dedicated a man could be to bodybuilding.
And I think also he changed his normal pitch somehow. His voice seems very low, much lower than in his other dramas. Or am I imagining things?

I'm not complaining tho, keep getting that $$, son. And the fact that the last 2 projects he participated are with idol actors like him, fills my heart with more joy

Very nice that PUMP UP will re recapped.
Before we get going I just want to comment on the main PUMP UP THE HEALTHY LOVE poster a la TITANIC above ⬆️.
I just smile and chuckle every time I see it but the ‘form’ displayed is SO wrong lol.
I am looking forward to PUMP UP and pleased for Lee Jun-young. LJY (although he appeared in OCN’s CLASS OF LIES (2019) which I enjoyed) really came on my radar when he went toe-to-to with Jung Hae-in in episode 3 of Netflix’s D.P. (2021). I was like, ‘Wow’! Reportedly those two rehearsed for months for that outstanding sequence.

Fl Jung Eun-ji dramatically is a blank slate for me. Checking over her work at MDL I noticed that in 2022 JEJ was FL in OCN’s BLIND with MLs: Taec and Ha Seok-jin. I have never seen BLIND. I ask myself, ‘How did I not watch BLIND?” An OCN drama and both those guys are favorites of mine. Perhaps it wasn’t legally available to me at the time. Anyway, it is legally available to me now on Prime Video where I just added BLIND to my watch list.

I was in awe. Jung Hae-in’s physicality (fighting skills) was something else in D.P. There are actually two confrontation scenes in D.P. between Lee Jun-young and the team tracking him down (Jung Hae-in and Koo Kyo-hwan). The scene at the beginning of the interview in the video was from the second confrontation.
LOL D.P. Spoiler—
The D.P. boys took Lee Jun-youn’s character down and brought him back to the Army.
The Netflix scene referenced above is the first confrontation.

Yes, she just dressed her in loose clothing implying she is flabby and out of shape. When he did the evaluation he talked about stomach fat, potential negative outcomes like diabetes and high blood pressure and her lack of strength, stamina and flexibility. My thought initially, which I think turned out to be correct, is that they will focus on her being "skinny-fat," which means someone who doesn't appear overweight but has too much unhealthy visceral fat. That is much more socially acceptable in 2025 than a fat suit and focuses much less on appearances.

I had had very mixed feelings about this drama right up to that point. A bit OTT, felt a bit fat shaming, but at the same time I felt for the FL.
At that point I changed my mind more towards I think I am going to like this show. It's not fat shaming, but more about health issues caused by fat and confidence. We like it or not, not all overweight people are Lizzo.

Maybe I am in the minority here but for all of the cringe elements - and the truly stupid English title (Uffda- what were they thinking?)- I really enjoyed the first episode and am encouraged by it.

The very capable writer obviously understands the core elements of the original story: The tale of Pygmalion as set forth in Ovid's METAMORPHOSES. We are not being treated to George Bernard Shaw's pretentious distortion of the tale- which left out the important elements of love and creative vision, robbing the story of its central meaning. (I once read a critic describing Shaw as a Great Minor Playwright- I think the description is quite apt)

Of course, it is also true that this story has been told before in a K-drama- the excellent OH MY VENUS starring So Ji-sub and Shin Min-ah. I am looking forward to this new treatment of the tale. We already know that the writer has given us much different backgrounds (and even motivations?) for our two leads, although the emphasis on fitness is the same.

I think that the ML is more flawed in this than in Oh My Venus. I'm hopeful that the two are going to round each other out, he'll help her be more fit but she'll help him be less rigid and judgmental.

I found some parts very cringey, and the FL also was a bit much at times, but overall I enjoyed it.

Required fields are marked *

I very much liked OH MY VENUS (except for the stupid joke ending) but if it had true flaw, it was that the ML was too perfect. I am very happy that this one is not. BTW a judgmental Pygmalion is actually true to Ovid's story.

We may just have to accept the cringe as part of the over-all package.

Hard pass. Healthy love is so NOT what I'm seeking in my drama watches, and physical exercises plus dieting have been too big part of my entire life already. Also I much preferred Eunji's face before all that work done Hope it'll have enough swoony gym scenes to make it worth everyone's time!

I really did not like this, and feel the world simply does not need any more shows with overt or implied fat shaming that equates body size with overall health, personal character, and self-worth. (As an aside, I'm tired of media that tries to get around this by telling us that being fat--and apparently having bad posture as well--makes you more likely to get heart disease, diabetes, or cancer. The research isn't clear on this at all, except when we're talking about extremely overweight OR extremely thin people. Being what most would consider as a little overweight--i.e. not stick thin--doesn't put you at demonstrably higher risk for anything other than people coming up to you saying they're just concerned about your health so please lose weight.) Or gorgeous actresses wearing baggy clothes being cast in the part of what's supposed to be a sad sack of a woman who apparently doesn't love herself enough to be thin.

There are brief moments where I thought Jun-young's charm might push me to continue, or when my personal love of exercise seemed like maybe it would be enough to watch a few more episodes, but those were fleeting. This is a hard pass for me. But I hope those who enjoyed it continue to do so!

I'm still gonna keep watching for now... but yeah, that's my issue with this show and also why I eventually dropped Oh My Venus. Also, the weight loss/fitness regime being promoted in the show is neither healthy nor sustainable. Jun-young's character should absolutely not be a physical trainer, because he is terrible at it. My husband was watching with me and he was like "He's going to end up killing her like what happened those people in The Biggest Loser."

2
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yes, exactly! His routine is punishing and fits into the whole (mistaken) idea that shows like this push, which is that body size directly correlates to how much you do or do not eat and move. It's a lot more complicated than that for most people, and even if the FL loses weight from this extreme lifestyle shift she, like 99% of all human beings who diet, will just go back to how she was before within a few months or a year.

It very well may be the case that Jun-young's character will grow and change during the course of the drama; in fact, I expect that to happen. But for me, that would likely be too little, too late to make up for the overall tone and offensive (to me) content.

2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Jun-young's character clearly experienced the physical fitness equivalent of the training Miles Teller's character experienced in Whiplash, and is now convinced that is the only way to live in a healthy manner. His methods of enacting behavioral change are extremely ineffective and even potentially harmful. He should leave average people alone and only work with people who want to become body builders (I'm not even gonna say regular athletes, I don't think his methods would help them either).
