Possessed Yook Sung-jae ventures into the Haunted Palace

Another teaser is out for SBS’s supernatural fantasy The Haunted Palace, blending historical fiction with a body-possessing rom-com premise. Yook Sung-jae (The Golden Spoon) may appear to be the nobleman Yoon Gab, but the true inhabitant of this refined shell is the imoogi Kang-cheol. In other words, he’s a mythological serpent that aspires to become a dragon. That’s where our heroine Bona (Pyramid Game) enters the picture, as the shaman Yeo-ri who harbors feelings for Gab — but not the spirit currently residing in his physical being. (Or at least, not yet.)

On a night shrouded in shadows, the king Kim Ji-hoon (Death’s Game) issues a royal order for Gab to be brought into the palace. Alas, Gab is anything but obedient, which means he literally gets carried into the palace while flailing about in protest. His mere presence brings about a shift in the atmosphere, sending our heroine’s sixth sense tingling. “How is the palace filled with such negative yin energy despite the king’s presence?” wonders Yeo-ri.

Before long, even the king sniffs out the impostor in his quarters. “You are not Yoon Gab,” proclaims the king. “Who are you?” Illuminated by a dramatic flash of lightning and rumbling thunder that he calls upon with a wave of his hand, Gab — or rather, not-Gab — quirks his lips in a cheeky smirk. Then he levels the king with a steady gaze: “I am Kang-cheol.” In response, the king’s face twists in a sneer. “That wicked imoogi?” Needless to say, there’s no one unfamiliar with the malicious spirit from the legends of yore.

Kang-cheol may claim he was drawn to the palace by his curiosity regarding the upheaval within its walls, but it seems like even more mayhem is following in his wake. Around a bloodstained young child, servants sprawl to the ground as if toppled by an unseen power. “This cursed evil spirit has taken hold of my father,” hisses the king, who later finds himself surrounded by countless centipedes while out in the forest.

“That eight-foot ghost will soon devise a way to swallow both the king and the first prince’s mother,” warns a concerned Yeo-ri. Without a second to waste, Yeo-ri immediately begins preparing a shamanistic ritual — only for someone to abruptly interrupt her, grabbing her arm with a hand that’s clad in a bloodstained sleeve. “Just what sort of deeds have your ancestors committed?” is the question that rings out, as the blind seer Kim Sang-ho (Dongjae, the Good or the Bastard) wears a curious smile.

Then we finally get a glimpse of the towering eight-foot ghost, and it’s a monstrous sight. “The only way to completely banish the eight-foot ghost is for you to sacrifice yourself,” the monk Lee Won-jong (The Goryeo-Khitan War) advises Kang-cheol. “Do you intend to give it a try?” Meanwhile, Yeo-ri begins a spirit-summoning ritual, declaring that the eight-foot ghost will soon appear. “Where are you hiding?” snarls the king, backed by a contingent of men and a sword in his hand. Not to be outdone, Kang-cheol swings his woldo blade down in a swift arc: “I’ll put an end to this.”

Helmed by PD Yoon Sung-shik (Cleaning Up, Mr. Queen) with scripts by Yoon Soo-jung (Sassy Go Go), The Haunted Palace is slated to premiere on April 18.

Not sure how they'll put in a romcom with body swap hijinks in there, with all of this chaos going down, but I'm in.

Ookaaaay trailer two has more of the horror stuff promised by the premise (more than I was hoping for haha), but it still looks like chaotic fun! I think this will be my next live watch. The premiere feels so far away! 😂

I'm really liking that the romance aspect is not with the king or crown prince. It already feels fresh because of it!

Thank you for the detailed breakdown of the teaser. Yook Sung-jae is always fun to watch. If I can watch Bona for Woo Do-hwan I can definitely watch her for Yook Sung-jae. I like the irreverent imoogi already. I am sure the OG Yoon Gab was a dull drag. Hwaiting Kang-cheol!! Go for it. 🐉
