News bites: April 1, 2025

  • It’s been almost three years since TVING’s webtoon adaptation Yumi’s Cells left us hanging after Season 2 and preparations are finally underway for Season 3, with an offer out for Kim Go-eun (Little Women) to reprise her leading role. As production for the office rom-com is in the early stages, details regarding scheduling or other cast members are still being discussed. [Osen]

  • JTBC confirmed casting for Ryu Seung-ryong (Chicken Nugget) to star in the slice-of-life office series The Story of Seoul Home Owner and Corporate Director Mr. Kim (roughly translated). Adapted from the same-titled novel (which was also made into a webtoon), the black comedy is planning to broadcast later this year, with PD Jo Hyun-tak (The Atypical Family, SKY Castle) attached to direct. [JTBC]
  • SBS has armed Yook Sung-jae (The Golden Spoon) and Bona (Pyramid Game) in new character posters, readying them for battle in King Kim Ji-hoon’s (Death’s Game) The Haunted Palace. Coming to our screens on April 18 this month, the supernatural sageuk will be airing on weekends following Buried Hearts. [SBS]

  • The Remarried Empress has reportedly found a home on Disney+ and though casting has not been fully finalized, it is looking likely that Shin Mina (Karma), Lee Se-young (Motel California), Lee Jong-seok (Big Mouth), and Joo Ji-hoon (The Trauma Code – Heroes on Call) will be our four leads. The fantasy romance and webtoon adaptation is expected to start filming around late May or early June. [iZE]
  • JTBC is gearing up for their upcoming fantasy Heavenly Ever After, where the suave Sohn Seok-gu (A Killer’s Paradox) fails tries to reassure wife Kim Hye-ja (Our Blues) in the latest teaser. Helmed by PD Kim Seok-yoon (Behind Your Touch) with scripts by Lee Nam-kyu (Daily Dose of Sunshine), the series will be premiering on April 19 in the weekend slot. [MBC]
  • It’s going to be a mystical season in dramaland this year with MBC also dabbling with spirits, setting up a labor law office for Jung Kyung-ho (Crash Course in Romance), Seol In-ah (Twinkling Watermelon), and Cha Hak-yeon (Castaway Diva) to represent their Oh My Ghost Clients. Kicking off promos with the first script reading stills, the comedy also stars Tang Joon-sang (Racket Boys) and Kyung Su-jin (Shadow Detective 2), and will be launching this May. [MBC]

Just scrap Season 3 if Kim Go-eun doesn't reprise her leading role. Obviously, I'm curious about who Yumi’s Cells will cast as Soonrok, but what scenes will he even be getting when Season 2 gave Babi Soonrok's scenes?

In the eyes of the general public (who haven't read the source material) Kim Go-eun IS Yumi, recasting her would be a bad idea

I saw the Yumi’s cells news and thought finally🥳. I could not believe they would leave the story hanging two seasons in a row. I hope it does going ahead but unlike 1&2 which were filmed close together this gap may mean that they struggle to get the regulars to coordinate their schedules. Also they would have been better off using those three years to make the animation scenes. I assume even with modern tech advances they take the longest to produce so it could mean waiting even longer. I love Yumi’s cells and it’s my go to when recommending a starter K drama to newbies to Korean dramas. I refer to it as the adult version of the film Inside out!

I agree. Yumi's cells is perfect for starters.

Yumi's cells 1 and 2 are the first k-dramas I watched on Viki and I loved them.
I think I have never laughed with other dramas so much.
I almost had given up on a third season, but these news are great. I'm looking forward to knowing the cast.

Of these, I'm the most excited for The Haunted Palace and am thrilled that it will be on Viki in my region!

I'd love to see Jung Kyung-ho in something better than his last drama, but don't really have high hopes for this one. I hope it surprises me!

1 - cast BWS as ML, that'd 100% bring the target audience to the yard^^

4 - oh well... enjoy that paycheck, JJH! Imma pretend this never happened and just keep loving you, can I?

6 - why only Hakyeon was spared from stylist's wrath? Not that I'm complaining...

1 - Webtoon fans have been dream-casting the role of Soonrok since the first season, which was obviously before Byeon Woo-seok's popularity, but I say no to him and yes to Gong Myung.

6 - Jung Kyung-ho and Seol In-ah must use the same hairstylist.

1 - if "true to book" accuracy was high on producers priority list, we'd never seen THIS lineup for REMARRIED EMPRESS, for example. So while I wish fans all the luck in getting a fitting actor for the part, makers will likely just go for the hottest trendy face they could afford. Which, for the record, likely won't be BWS, despite my joke above - I bet he's too expensive atm.

- yeah, TOTALLY the same stylist. Time-traveler from 80's, I assume...

I didn't know i would be this unexcited for Yumi's cells season 3. They really didn't plan this well and gave Babi lots of SR scenes but also that season 2 was very mid compared to season 1 which I loved. I'm not sure how they would go about the third season that too if there is no KGE.

1. 😱😱😱 Sigh, I am really not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. Yea, there is too much "story" left but is it a good time to tell this tale!? Hmm, let us then wait and watch dear friends.

2. Ryu Seung-ryong feels too larger-than-life to be restricted in an office. Gotta see him *ahem* Moving I guess. 💪🏻😂

3. Imoogi Kang-cheol, hwaiting!!

4. 🤦‍♀️ Again, sigh, I am really not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. 🤷‍♀️

5. 🤞🏻Fingers crossed for this one. Please be good, please be good, please be good ... till the end.

6. I love Seol In-ah's haircut. It really suits her. Jung Kyung-ho and Cha Hak-yeon are looking good too. Also I loved The Midnight Studio and this day-time version seems promising.
