Gong Myung scolds Sooyoung in Second Shot at Love
by lovepark
The first teaser has dropped for tvN’s romantic-comedy Second Shot at Love, featuring Sooyoung (Not Others) as alcohol-chugging mechanic Han Geum-joo and Gong Myung (Way Back Love) as the alcohol-averse doctor Seo Ui-joon. These two polar opposites reunite as adults, and thus begins her journey towards sobriety.
Opening with a sequence of Geum-joo drinking – no matter the occasion, group, or place – she appears energetic and lively as she tosses back a glass of soju, beer, or wine with a smile on her face. In contrast, we hear Ui-joon’s voiceover saying that South Korea is too lenient with alcohol, and his words have merit as the scenes change to what happens to Geum-joo after she gets drunk.
From her parents to her old crush, the people around Geum-joo call her name with a mixture of worry and disappointment as she stumbles over a rock, gets piggybacked by Ui-joon, and spills her guts into the toilet. It might have been fun in the beginning, but it seems once Geum-joo starts, she does not stop until she is completely drunk.
Ui-joon sternly tells her to quit drinking, and as if contemplating his advice, our drunk heroine hiccups in response. Touted as the first Korean drama promoting sobriety, the show could be a fun change of pace to the usual drinking culture seen on our screens.
Similarly to the teaser, the two posters released alongside it showcase Ui-joon’s stance against drinking. The first depicts Ui-joon pulling Geum-joo out of a glass of beer with the words “I wish you would not drink,” and the second has doctor Ui-joon asking if you have ever considered cutting off alcohol with images playing off the Korean phrase “the film was cut” to describe alcohol-induced blackouts.
Written by Myung Soo-hyun (Monthly Magazine Home) and Jeon Ji-hyun (Ugly Young-ae Season 10) with filmmaker Jang Yoo-jung (Honest Candidate) at the helm, tvN’s Second Shot at Love is slated for twelve episodes and will premiere May 12 in the Monday-Tuesday slot.

Finally a show that actually shows the reality of drinking large amounts of alcohol over a period of time. Hopefully, like the mental health elements in Dr Slump and Daily dose of sunshine this drama will integrate some on point elements re alcohol treatment and minimise the dramatic aspects that could put people off admitting they need help.
The only other drama that I watched that emphasised the negative elements of alcohol is the weekender Once again where the mother in law ended up with alcohol induced dementia and had to stop drinking to reverse the symptoms.

Actually, one of the few things I remember of Dr. Slump, was being quite shocked at the amount of alcohol they drank while being on anti-depressants.

Yes that alcohol intake as well as the window in the therapy room door and the ability to hear the person talking from outside the room were all ridiculous but they did get some elements right. Unfortunately, all the dramas seem to work hard to get one element right and then get slack which results in two elements being very wrong when they are covering important topics.

Call me after she stops drinking! I'm not a teetotaller, but I'm most definitely cringe-averse. If there's anything that makes me hit the FF button, it's drunken shenanigans. I'm glad they're addressing this issue.

I wish the cast luck but this drama will be a pass. I am at the point now that any drama with the words ‘drinking’ or ‘divorce’ in the title is an automatic pass. Do you recall an earlier title that SECOND SHOT AT LOVE was being publicized under: A VERY COMMON SENSE ALCOHOLIC? SSAL is a definite improvement.

Drunken shenanigans aren't exactly my favorite, but on the other hand, a drama where the ML tells the FL to quit drinking for 12 episodes doesn't sound particularly fun either.
Sure, a drama that touches on the dangers and consequences of too much alcohol could be interesting, but this is a rom-com, so all of this will probably just remain surface level (not to mention that the preview is already treating the whole thing like a joke).
Maybe I'm wrong, and this drama will be a surprise, but so far, I'm not convinced.

The posters are fun. A journey towards sobriety is anything but fun 🙃 however I appreciate the premise. Hopefully it will be more than just a token PSA / documentary on the evils of drinking and the challenges of becoming (and staying) sober.
Again not a fan of watching back-to-back dramas of the same actor but Gong Myung gets a pass. I would definitely want to see how a stuffed starchy shirt doctor handles his boisterous drunk yeoja-chingu. I love Sooyoung and I am sure she will kill it.
I also appreciate the name change. So drama team - Cheers!! 😂

I'm watching it just for the premise of actually saying alcohol is bad for you. And for the leads. I'm watching Way Back Love with Gong Myung and am so surprised at how I forgot how handsome he is and a good actor! Why can't I age backwards too?

"The first Korean Drama Promoting Sobriety". What a sad statement but I guess one has to start somewhere.
This show might be good. I will check it out.
