Brewing romance between Sooyoung and Gong Myung
by solstices
Another teaser raises a toast to tvN’s upcoming rom-com Second Shot at Love, in which an alcohol-loving (read: alcoholic) heroine is inspired to give up her favorite drinks upon reuniting with her first love. Can she maintain sobriety, or will her cravings win out?
Said heroine is the mechanic Han Geum-joo, played by Sooyoung (Not Others). Regardless of the time or place, Geum-joo can always concoct a reason to crack open a cold one. In all aspects, she’s certainly not living up to her name, which means “abstinence from alcohol.”
That is, until her first love Seo Ui-joon — played by Gong Myung (Way Back Love) — waltzes back into her life. As a doctor, his first priority is health, which means excessive alcohol intake is very much frowned upon. Pouring forth sound advice with a side of romantic feelings, the teetotal Ui-joon will serve as the catalyst for Geum-joo to rethink her drinking habits and hopefully take the first step to a liver-friendly life.
In the latest teaser, our couple is in the midst of a riverside date, dancing as if in a world of their own. Cast in the golden glow of the setting sun, our couple form the perfect dreamlike picture — until Geum-joo teeters off-balance. Ui-joon immediately scrambles to catch her before she falls over, and Geum-joo beams dazedly up at him. And hiccups. With her pink cheeks, it’s clear as day that she’s drunk, oops.
Despite Ui-joon’s utter distaste for alcohol, though, his heart can’t help but win out. Gazing into Geum-joo’s eyes, a fond smile spreads across Ui-joon’s face. “I met you, who is harder to stay away from than alcohol,” narrates Ui-joon, as he continues to hold Geum-joo close.
It seems Geum-joo still isn’t able to refrain from downing a drink or two (or ten), which means it’s up to our smitten hero to stand his ground and correct her habits. Will cutting ties with her beloved alcohol lead to a despirited (and quite literally de-spirited) heroine? Or will Ui-joon’s love and medical advice win out? Either way, something’s certainly brewing on the horizon between these two.
Directed by filmmaker Jang Yoo-jung (Honest Candidate) with scripts penned by Myung Soo-hyun (Monthly Magazine Home) and Jeon Ji-hyun (Ugly Young-ae Season 10), Second Shot at Love will pour its first glass on May 12.

I doubt it will be properly pro-sobriety. From the premise, it sounds like the FL is alcohol-loving and that this trait sets her apart from the ML. It's like the sunshine-grumpy trope, except it involves alcoholism—a medical condition—and not the cute quirk the trailer makes it out to be.
Knowing Koreans, I would not be surprised if the drama ends with the ML deciding to have one can of beer every day.

The premise and cast are intriguing, but after being burned (or, feeling burnt out) on a few recent romcoms, I'm going to wait and see how this one goes before trying it. But also, yay Sooyoung! Yay Gong Myung! I like them both.

After seeing almost all K-dramas normalize excessive drinking where a drunken binge does not seemingly affect the health at all and oftentimes earns a piggyback ride it will be interesting to see how this drama preaches the virtues of being a teetotaler. Cheers to healthy livers and er, lovers. 😂😍
