Thanks for you kind words. I am glad you liked it.
Yeah, we were lucky to get this gem. I don't think I have ever watched a better drama. Not to diminish the other dramas but to give much-deserved credit to When Life Gives You Tangerines.

A drama with a strong focus on the multi-generation of women. Made me ponder the generational traumas our mothers & grandmothers had suffered and what was passed to the next generation. And what can we do to stop it.

A modern classic and one of the best dramas I've ever seen. It tells a rich yet simple story in a consistently loving and respectful way, focusing on themes like the various kinds of love, sacrifice, and family with which everyone can relate. Personally, there were many moments when I related as a child, and others where I did so as a parent, and to me, that's the mark of a truly excellent multigenerational tale.
There is some tragedy, of course, but I hope hearing that doesn't turn anyone off from watching this show because even at the characters' lowest points, there is still hope and humor that is sustaining.
It's fun to watch different actors show up who I didn't expect to see (especially Kim Seon-ho), and all the performances are exceptional. If you've forgotten why you loved PBG, this show will remind you almost immediately and IU is a joy to watch in dual roles. And even though he plays a highly irritating character, I have to acknowledge Choi Dae-hoon's talent in making this pathetic man occasionally sympathetic (a huge feat).
It's true that "Tangerines" is similar in tone and style to the "Reply" series such that if you liked the latter you'll most likely enjoy the former. But to me, "Tangerines" is a more complex and profound viewing experience overall that never drags. Everything one loves about kdramas is here, but it's also modern enough to introduce to those friends and family members who aren't sure kdramas are for them.
Just watch it.

This is a melodrama following four generations of women from one family as they live through the historical events that shaped the Nation. Aesoon’s experiences once translated into poetry form the Korean version of Alex Hayley’s Roots.
The acting, directing and writing all work together to produce a drama that will be included in the list of classic K-dramas for years to come. The set design and cinematography are a homage to the beauty of the Jeju land and sea scapes.
Do yourself a favour and clear your schedule so you can focus while watching and stick with the four episode per season format that covers the four seasons over the 16 episode series.
Have tissues at the ready for tears of laughter and for crying along with the characters in their times of sorrow. This is a drama that encourages reflections on relationships of all kinds and reminds us of the sacrifices some parents make for their children. We are shown examples of families formed by birth and by choice. The acts of kindness shown to family and random strangers over the years reap a bountiful harvest years later.
I came for my dream pairing of IU and Bogummy and stayed for all the actors. I give high ratings to dramas that bring me joy in the moment but it is a rare drama that is exceptional in multiple areas and lingers on in the memory long after the final credits have rolled. This is that drama and it gets a 10 star rating from me.

This is a very beautiful drama. The story is from the very beginning framed as a memory, and while we go back and follow a chronology from childhood to old age, there are many flashbacks in the later episodes - not so much in long reminiscing attempts to save money by using the same clips a million times, but (and I actually think it worked) reminding us that these grownups and elderly people had been children and young once, and still were those people. That some things had changed and had cost them dearly, and also, that even when their children behaved badly, the apples didn't fall far from the tree.
And I made this one, that isn't really a spoiler except for revealing a mood: https://imgur.com/vmqiu3d
And these, that do have some spoilers.

and I have watched hundreds if not a thousand +)
I found the time jumps sometimes confusing and the translation sometimes a bit strange, but the actors/characters held my attention throughout a 16 hour binge. I cried with them, laughed with them and lived with them. A
As a foreigner, I also thought I understood the times in Korea during the periods covered, and the struggles of the Korean people, and therefore I also find that this country which was almost feudal in the 60s is now such an amazingly advanced nation.
Great direction, great acting and a great story.

One of the best dramas I have ever watched, (and I have watched hundreds if not a thousand +) and great ensemble acting. So many complex characters portrayed so well.
