[Beanie Recs] Filling the When Life Gives You Tangerines void

Ahoy, Beanies! It’s time to gather your collective genius for a recommendation series that features you and your drama knowledge. We’ll drop a drama conundrum and leave it up to you to provide a drama rec, and the appropriate rationale behind it, be it long or short.

Is it even possible? Are there any other dramas that do what this drama did? How can I fill the emotional gap now that When Life Gives You Tangerines is over (short of rewatching it — which I haven’t excluded)? Help, Beanies! I want to smile and cry that much again! But, where do I go from here?

Have a very particular drama itch that needs scratching? In need of a Beanie Rec? Email us at hello @ dramabeans.com and we’ll feature your topic in a future post.

When Life Gives You Tangerines is in the same genre as Reply 1988 and Our Blues.

Reply 1988 is the closest whereas Oue Blues is too omnibus in format.

Good point. OUR BLUES was an ensemble show.

Tell me about it. I was in a drama slump before Tangerines … and now back in slump.

I just can’t start anything fluffy at all. The likely step is watching non-emotional stuff and three choices I’ve come up with: Big Bet, Dong Jae or Doubt. Any thoughts, my Beanie Friends?

For those who want something as thoughtful as Tangerines, time to watch My Ahjusshi if you haven’t watched it yet.

I guess as a fresque of a long period of time, Pachinko could work.

Ok, I'm going to tackle this in two parts and maybe something will hit.

First, long-spanning kind-of-epic dramas that center around families or romances: As others have said, Reply 1988 is the first one that comes to mind, and probably nails the tone in a way that is most similar. But it also makes me think of Mr. Sunshine in some ways, since you get to follow the characters and their relationships for a long time through many hardships.

BUT if we're just looking for things that made me laugh and cry a lot, it's a wider field! I'd put Move to Heaven in this category - the central relationship between uncle and nephew is amazing as it grows, and you get windows into other peoples' relationships through the trauma cleaning business. I also laughed and cried a ton in The Uncanny Counter which, despite all the super hero/demon stuff, is actually a coming of age story about finding your people and your motivation to keep going. And then for a romance how about Just Between Lovers/Rain or Shine? It's got complicated family dynamics, people trying to deal with the fallout from events they had no control over, and a really sweet central couple.

🤣🤣🤣 All your recommendations indeed hit the lacrimal ducts a bit too well. I remember watching Move to Heaven through a constant veil of tears and feeling as if something had squeezed my heart rather tight. The only other drama which gave me the same feels was Tomorrow (**trigger warning ) but then that is another story.

I love your description of both The Uncanny Counter and Just Between Lovers. Just spot on.

Move To Heaven is a unique gem that fills up your heart in all sorts of ways through its episodic format whilst underscored by a distant yet growing relationship between the uncle and nephew. Its 10-episode run is a smart choice making it compact and impactful.

Way Back Love!! If 🍊 Tangerines 🍊 squeezed our hearts and eyes alike 😭💗 with its epic storytelling and hi-key emotions, so did Way Back Love with its deft handling of a sensitive topic with a lot of heart. ❤ Obviously it was a low budget production and had none of the large scale sceneries of the Netflix wonder, but Way Back Love hits ALL the right notes - emotional and lacrimal. 😂 The drama's handling of the past and present timelines in seamless storytelling with heartfelt moments weaved in was both masterful and engaging. The drama never veered towards heavy melodrama and had quite a few surprisingly comic moments but still managed to tug the heartstrings. The lack of production value in no way affected the story and the way it unfolded and the character growth was cathartic and satisfying. With a handful of characters in the drama, all were well delineated and added their own charm to the story. It was truly a moving experience.

Way Back Love is my tangerines recovery drama as well. It’s a great juxtaposition of emotional highs and lows.

I was going to say Way back love if no one else mentioned it. Its the mix of sad, funny and hope filled. Beautifully shot, well acted and no filler or random plot lines to water it down.

Even though the premise of Way Back Love had heartbreak written all over it, the deft handling of the subject matter and as you so beautifully expressed the correct "mix of sad, funny and hope filled" moments made it a better watch than a straight out melo. The balance of light moments without diluting the powerful message made it a truly inspirational and healing drama, unlike the drama-which-shall-not-be-named-on DB which was allegedly a "light-hearted and fun" watch, ... till it wasn't!! 🙈😭🤷‍♀️

Such a good point, that drama traumatised beanies because the tone change came from nowhere. I didn’t even watch the drama but I felt the after effects through the fan wall group therapy sessions.

That last minute turning on a dime trick the drama pulled was definitely a let down for what was up until then a good drama with some really fun moments. Who can forget the fashion show, especially that fuchsia coat. 😍💗🤣 Yea, all the live watchers were traumatized. Of course binge watchers like uri @IsaGC who knew what to expect were able to manage their expectations well. In all my years of drama watching I have never been so gobsmackedly blindsided by any drama, movie, novel or drama.😱😭🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

@seeker Have you watched High Kick Through The Roof? I haven't, but from what I've read it had a similarly gobsmackedly blindsiding effect on its viewers.

Personally, I have to say that reading about this ending makes me glad I didn’t watch High Kick Through the Roof. While I’m all for trying unexpected things and breaking the mold, there are a few conventions that you can’t really betray without also betraying your audience, and killing off your main characters in the last scene of a FAMILY SITCOM is one of them.

Well no one can say it better than JB. 🤟👏👏👏👏

Thank you @Midnight. For some strange reason now I feel so much better. 😂🤣

3

@seeker I'm glad it made you feel better! 😂😂

When I read "the drama which shall not be mentioned" I was totally thinking of another show which starts with D 😂

3

😯 ... and what drama may that be dear @IsaGC

1

@seeker

Dodosolsollalasol 🙈🙊

2

🤣🤣🤣 Well, well I certainly would not have guessed that ... I made sure to "delete" the second half of the last episode from my memory. For me the drama ended with the leads' joint piano performance. 😂🎹🎼🎶

2

^^ @IsaGC

Guess the fact one found it difficult to move on from Hb was because Taecyeon was just too gosh darn cute and too memorable. 😍🥺

3

@seeker

Our vampire Taecyeon was LOVELY in Heartbeat. One of my favorite MLs.

Are there any dramas that did what Tangerines 🍊 did?

The answer is no.

While there were some that were similar, Tangerines as a whole (the production, the story, the actors) was in a class by itself

I finished Tangerines on Tuesday night and Wednesday night (once the swelling of my eyelids was mostly gone) it felt so much like, where are all my friends? I miss them ❤️

I’d watch the Italian film Cinema Paradiso which is the movie they saw (twice) in the drama. It’s my #1 favorite film of ever and I almost passed out when it started on the cinema screen (that should have been my Squee of the week!). They screened the original (1988, won the Oscar for best foreign film) for his mom and then later they each probably saw the Directors Cut (2002). The original is better and and then you can look up the OST by Ennio Morricone who was one of the great film composers. It’s also about the passage of time and love, so much love.

I’d also recommend Reply ‘88.

I am clearly in minority, I Iiked Tangerines but I find myself unable to associate with the feeling that it left an unfillable void. I mean after watching three reply me series, high school to mature age drama like 25-21, countrylife/island settings like our blues....tangerines gave me a rather familiar feeling. It was a good feeling but familiar. But then, i have been watching kdramas for past 17 years, so maybe I am jaded. And if you are someone who became aware of kdramas post - pandemic on OTTs, then I can understand why Tangerines swept you off your foot. Recommendation wise, I think all three reply me series are a close match, with the third one being the strongest and it has park bo gum too !

Hi, bye Mama has some very sad parts as the husband really did love the wife and the mum was struggling too but there were some funny parts with the ghosts too.

It's not a k-drama, but I think the c-drama The Bond gives similar nostalgic vibes, but it didn't need to make the audience cry. It is an excellent show.

From Korea I highly recommend Twinkling Watermelon (father-son relationship), My Perfect Stranger (mother-daughter relationship) and 25-21 (just because it's very good and most part of the show takes place in 1999-2000). Also Go Back Couple (very good balance between comedy and melodrama. It also is about motherhood).

Great minds think a like, I also thought of Go back couple, 25,21 and Twinkling Watermelon because they were all brilliant at capturing the joy of particular moments in time and the contrast with later times. However, I felt none of them had the epic feel that Tangerines had, especially the generational challenges. Tangerines was one woman and her man’s story and everyone else became the extras who shared part of their journey. I only understood where the spotlight was shining when we saw so little of their children’s stories. In all those other dramas I felt we got a bit more of the ’extras’ stories.

Tangerines 🍊 is probably the one and only time in my memory where the epic budget was deservedly spent for an epic feel. Money well spent IMO. For perspective, that Gossiping Stars show was a similar cost.
Upon my 50th rewatch of 25-21 I can kinda peek through the veneer and see the smaller budget. Same with 🍉’s.

Also, I don’t think I’ve ever cried so hard after ep10 (the father episode) and ep16 (the breakup) of 25-21 until Tangerines came along and said “hold my beer”

“brilliant at capturing the joy of particular moments in time and the contrast with later times” so well stated!!! It applies to Way Back Love as well

Way back love 🥰finally a short drama that felt premium.

Short watches like KBS specials and Soundtrack#1 feel like I have treated myself to an expensive prepared meal from a premium supermarket. However, Way back love felt like I had bought something from the Harrods food hall. I had no idea I was going to be watching a drama that was next level quality.

I almost cried with all the shows I have mentioned (Twinkling Watermelon, 25-21, Tangerines, The Bond...) but My Perfect Stranger and Go Back Couple really made me cry a little.
Surely it depends a lot of our personal emotional phase when we watch a show.

And you are right, Tangerines is the only one which focuses on the main couple story. Nothing more, nothing less. But what I really loved were the relatable and ordinary details.

I agree that our emotional state at the time of watching makes a difference but some dramas hit differently regardless of state of mind at the time they take you out unexpectedly. The mum who lost her daughter and needed to save her son in law by making him care for the baby in Hi, bye mama took me out every time they showed her pain.

“the relatable and ordinary details” - you hit it on the nail. This is where Tangerines is far and away above others, at least to me. I can’t vouch for others but clearly this is also like the story of my families, my parents and even myself. It’s like drawing you into a particular chapter or moment of our lives.

I think that's what I enjoyed the most!
For instance when we had to move when I was a teenager, one of my mom's concerns was to keep her wardrobe and to fit it in the master bedroom of the new house. Although there was already a built-in closet, she didn't want to give up the one they had bought when they got married. So that situation in the drama was very familiar to me.

3

I did not watch WLGYT, but the drama I immediately thought of for this prompt was Hi, Bye Mama. I would both cry my eyes out and laugh out loud most episodes. On top of a great cast (Lee Kyu-Hyung in a lead role!), it was a fun yet heart wrenching story about mothers/daughters, love, loss and grief.
