My Dearest Nemesis: Episodes 9-10

In our penultimate week, our leads deal with the fallout of finding out about their joint dark history. As they navigate the future of their romance, they are hit with other obstacles that will either make their relationship or break them apart completely.

EPISODES 9-10

We resume with Soo-jung and Joo-yeon finding out that they’re each other’s first loves, and this doesn’t go down well with Soo-jung. When she was much younger, her dad spent more time taking care of her sick mom and she grew up having to be strong for herself and to take care of Soo-bin. Black Dragon was the first person Soo-jung wanted to rely on, and that’s why his catfishing devastated her. On the other hand, Joo-yeon has no idea how to feel now that the person who read him for filth and hurt him in the past is the same person who makes him happy in the present.

Ha-jin decides she and Shin-won need to come clean to Soo-jung and Joo-yeon, but at this point, the duo already know about their shared past. Soo-jung and Joo-yeon temporarily put aside their beef to drag Ha-jin and Shin-won for beginning their relationship off the back of separating the first loves. Heh. But the conversation soon circles back to the disastrous first love, and Soo-jung calls it quits. Joo-yeon protests, but she insists that it will be difficult to continue liking him with the knowledge that he is Black Dragon, and the best choice for both of them is to end the relationship. Cue: moments of awkwardness between them at work, and Joo-yeon’s unromantic abuse of power — where he makes Soo-jung sit in his office doing nothing for several productive minutes. Smh.

My Dearest Nemesis: Episodes 9-10

Soo-jung confronts Joo-yeon after a while, and he apologizes for lying about his age back then. He asks if she can forgive him, forget the lie, and just see him as the current Ban Joo-yeon. But nope, Soo-jung’s mind is made up. Joo-yeon doesn’t understand why she’s ending things when she likes him, and I can get behind his argument because Soo-jung’s choice to break up with him now is subjective. But then he unreasonably compares it to the past when she left him — and while I can understand why 15-year-old Joo-yeon would have been hurt, you’d think a 30-year-old Joo-yeon would understand her better. Anyway, after hosting a pity party with Shin-won, Joo-yeon finally realizes how much his lie hurt Ha-jin. Better late than never.

In the midst of the breakup blues, news breaks that the Yongsung successor is getting married, and the accompanying picture in the article is from Joo-yeon’s meet and greet with Soo-jung’s family. Oops! Soo-jung is the subject of gossip and snide comments at work, but her lovely team members are adamant that the rumor is false — because Soo-jung and Joo-yeon are always arguing at work. Oh, you sweet summer children. Secretary Kwon also reports to Grandma that there is no truth to the rumor, but Grandma still wants to get rid of Soo-jung. Joo-yeon argues that Soo-jung is actively involved in the renewal project that the department store is working on, and Grandma relents. But she warns that if she gets a whiff of anything else, she will handle it herself. How scary!

My Dearest Nemesis: Episodes 9-10

Soo-jung is worried about Joo-yeon now that Grandma is involved, but he shuts down her concern because they’re no longer in a relationship. His sudden cold attitude hits her like a ton of bricks, and she breaks down in tears at home for the first time in forever. Joo-yeon buries himself in work to get over the breakup, and he ends up falling so sick that he has to take a day off. Following this, Soo-jung has a mini conference with her head and her heart, and she decides to leave the past in the past. Cue: rushing over to Joo-yeon’s house to nurse him back to health, apologies, reassurances, recommitment to their relationship, and kisses. And more kisses. And spending the night together. Awww.

The next morning, Soo-jung is caught in her walk of shame, and she tells her dad that she’s back together with Joo-yeon. Dad is worried because chaebol families are not normal, but he trusts her decision. And as long as his daughter is happy, he is happy. But Grandma is not from that parental school of thought, and she fires Joo-yeon after hearing that Soo-jung spent the night at his place. Joo-yeon goes on his knees to beg and promise that being in a relationship won’t derail his work, but that falls on deaf ears. Joo-yeon finally realizes he will never be good enough for Grandma and she confirms it by saying he was never a substitute for her son, he was just a defect. Ugh! You can never make me like this woman.

My Dearest Nemesis: Episodes 9-10

The amazing Secretary Kwon resigns after Grandma criticizes her for covering up for Joo-yeon, but she has no regrets. Apparently, she has always known about his double life, but kept mum because his suppression of emotions and feelings reminded her of Grandma remaining strong and stoic after her son’s death. Secretary Kwon figured it was a good trait for a successor to have, but no more. She wants Joo-yeon to be happy in love, and she’s relieved that someone like Soo-jung is by his side. Joo-yeon is touched and he gives her a respectful bow and thanks her for working with him all these years. *Sniff* Show, can’t we keep her and blast Grandma off to space?

Now that Joo-yeon is in his jobless era, he spends time connecting with Soo-jung’s family. Soo-bin is more accepting of him now, and they bond over their shared joblessness, Joo-yeon’s nonexistent handyman skills, and his surprisingly good cooking skills. They have a lovely time over dinner, and it’s the first time Joo-yeon is actually sitting to eat in a family setting since his parents passed away. Dad and Soo-bin are further endeared to Joo-yeon when they hear this, and they make him sleep over — but not before fighting over whose room will host their precious in-law. Lol.

Grandma transfers Soo-jung to the facilities management hoping that she’ll be humiliated enough to quit. But, ma’am, have you actually met Soo-jung? She’s a resilient worker — with handyman skills to boot! She’s going to thrive in this department. Lol. Soo-jung’s refusal to quit also upsets the jealous coworker — who hates her because she is the only person who speaks her mind and refuses to cower in the face of office politics. Coworker can’t understand why that same Soo-jung is so accepting of this obvious humiliation, and Soo-jung explains that her intolerance of injustice was to protect herself, but now that she wants to protect someone else, she has to put up with Grandma’s crap.

A frustrated Grandma eventually summons Soo-jung to ask why she’s not giving in to the pressure to quit. “Because [Joo-yeon] might come back,” she replies. Grandma scoffs at the ridiculous — well, to her — notion that Joo-yeon will be allowed to return. But as far as Soo-jung is concerned, no one is more qualified for the directorship than he is. Soo-jung takes a swipe at Grandma asking if she is at ease after blaming all her misfortunes on Joo-yeon, before concluding that she’s not holding out because she wants Joo-yeon to get back the successor position, but because she wants him to get back his family. Which, unfortunately, is Grandma. Ugh! That woman doesn’t deserve her grandson.

Ha-jin’s mom drops by her restaurant, and Ha-jin hurriedly introduces Shin-won as her boyfriend a part-time worker to avoid unnecessary drama. But drama comes in the form of her ex-husband (cameo by Shin Hyun-soo). I thought it was weird that Mom kept hounding Ha-jin about the divorce, but it turns out she didn’t know that Ex cheated. Mom immediately turns on Ex when Ha-jin spills the tea, and of course, she’s thrilled when she learns that her daughter is dating Shin-won. But Ha-jin is uncomfortable with Shin-won getting too involved in her drama, and she draws the line to prevent him from getting any deeper. Shin-won reiterates that he wants more than just a casual relationship, and their differing stance on what they want from the relationship puts a wrench in the whole thing. Sigh.

Back to our main couple, Joo-yeon finds out about Soo-jung’s transfer and confronts her. He wants her to quit rather than endure the humiliation, but she’s unwilling to throw away the time and effort she devoted to the company just because Grandma is being petty. “I made this decision for myself because I love you,” Soo-jung says, and Joo-yeon comes to a decision as well. Next thing you know, he’s back in his chaebol suit and in his position as director. How he achieved that, we shall find out next week.

I don’t believe Grandma suddenly grew a heart in the black hole that is her chest after her conversation with Soo-jung, so I’m guessing Joo-yeon most likely cut a deal with her to get back his position. I want to believe that said deal will not jeopardize his relationship with Soo-jung, and I also want to believe that Ha-jin and Shin-won will reach a compromise and find a way to make their relationship work. We must get our happy ending on all sides.

"I don’t believe Grandma suddenly grew a heart in the black hole that is her chest"
🤣🤣🤣
She is an NPC Big Boss. NPCs don't have this throbbing muscle we call a heart. They are just pixels on a screen we need to kill lol

Jokes aside, I thought this set of episodes handled the fallout, the purgatory, and makeup with deftness and sensitivity. I was pleasantly surprised and frankly relieved for our OTP.

Love the found family vibes as JY gets adopted into hers ❤❤
Love SJ's loyal team mates (cue: Na Na's very extra sobbing)
Love the secretary! (oh the feels!)
Love our OTP's besties
For these two lonely people, they actually have a lot more emotional resources to draw from - and for that, I cheer ╰(*°▽°*)╯

I was so bored during these episodes, I used a lot the FF button.

My favorite part was the Daddy being sad because he couldn't lock his ex-son-in-law in the freezer.

I'm kinda tired by the trope of the women who don't say their husband cheated because it's protect more the husband than them.

So I was right episode 9 was incredibly annoying, but we are back at it. I see we are getting more of that woman, is grandma. If they have this man forgive her for being such a horrible woman, I will count this drama as one of the worst I have seen. SMH.

It is *so* rare that horrible, tyrannical, violent grandparents aren't forgiven.
They will talk about her trauma, and that it has all been a test with her waiting for her grandchild to show some courage and blah blah blah - it may even be throwing her off the thrown that qualifies him - and suddenly she is through her drama and family is so important blah blah happily ever after.
But I don't want her to be forgiven either.

Koreans mostly love and I think they consider this filial duty to respect and forgive their elders whatever they do considering the many shows we've seen where the family was beyond horrible yet a simple sob and a sorry resolved it(hope the reality isin't that sad)...I would have been so refreshing to see Joo-yeon cut ties with his horrible so called Grandma and start afresh...The man has more than enough specs to find himself a great job and earn great money and all to ever need anything from that woman...He gave her more than enough all this years to feel any remorse for not looking back and finally living his life alongside people who value him...
To actually give that message for others to see it's not bad to cut out toxic people and walk away even if they are family!
But we know they will make him forgive her...

strangely enough, i'm having fun. mind you, my pet peeve dramas are noona romances, rich boy poor girl, ceo/chaebol stuff, and extrememly exaggerated emotions but i do love me an enemies-to-lovers trope so maybe that's where it got me. or maybe i'm just in a season of my life when i can just tolerate bs now. anyways, i eagerly look forward to this show every week. nothing makes sense and it does at the same time. just gotta let go of the brain cells and enjoy the ride.

I can't even say why, but I like this show. Everytime I fear some dreaded trope shows up it does - but it's (mostly) handled in a ok way, sometimes even surprising. When he attempted to kneel before her he said something like "I won't make you cry anymore" and I thought, omo, proposal now?! But he just tied her shoelaces. 😂 So it seems the tropes are canceling each other out. 😉
I never understood why FL was hung up on ML making himself older when they were teens. Not a clever move, sure, but well. The explanation they gave finally in ep 10 hit me unexpectedly on an emotional level - she couldn't count on her Dad let alone her brother to stand up for her. Her Mom had died when she was little. She was and felt alone and thought she had found someone who could be her rock...I felt the letdown and how hard it must hit her. Respect, show, I never thought you'd convince me about this!

Second that, I was really delighted and heartened by how they navigated that whole emotional terrain post-reveal. The directing was on-point too. It hits different

I was surprised at how sensible this situation was shown - her Dad is presented as a doting father, they obviously love each other very much. Still, he is just not the type to stand up and fight, not even for his daughter. But that doesn't make him less loveable. It's just how humans are. And he has lost his wife, too, and was suffering at that time. In fact, in the end, you feel sorry for both of them.

I hope what will happen is that shareholders will be angry that Mrs. Chairwoman is running the company on feelings alone and removing two employees who are not just generally skilled and useful, but also key components in the ongoing ambitious project, so that her pettiness is threatening to cost the company a lot at the bottom line.
I want to see her outside the castle with her ceramic pots, singing "Ach, Du lieber Augustin ... " Muahaha!

I suppose the company is inherited, or it has become a big company some time 50 years ago. I don't want to assume about women in general, but I imagine the chairwoman inherited the company after her husband. I am also completely certain that her son was never the man she says she wants her grandchild to be. (And I don't think he could ever, in any way satisfy her, even if he became a zombie who was completely dead except for market analyses and board meetings).
When I say "feelings" I mean anger and tyranny, not very hippie-ish, but very emotionally. Her grandchild and FL are both extremely competent, and like it has been emphasized, the company and especially their department is in the middle of a complicated project, and they are not very likely to succeed without their two leading figures. When she fires them it is purely based on her emotions and it is bad for business.
That's why I think she is fairly likely to be thrown out by the other shareholders. Being tough and able to fire people may be a qualification, but firing the best people willy-nilly for personal reasons is not. Reverse nepotism.

When I say I don't think her son was like she wants her poor grandchild to be I mean I think she was trying to get him down, too.
In Dramaland, grandparents are usually forgiven for stuff like this.
Otherwise, I wouldn't even be surprised if *she* had ordered the white truck, just because she was angry her son took a day off to celebrate his son's birthday. But I will assume the ToD just represents "destiny", and that the chairwoman will be healed in the end and maybe there won't even be a scene of ML forgiving her, because the "happy end" will be her accepting him, and then everything is alright. Because grandparents more or less can't .... what's it called ... bring themselves out of favour ... degratify? disgrace? in dramaland.
But I hope at least before we end with that lame solution, she will be set off her thrown by her grandchild, who everyone else but her can see is a better businessperson than her.

"My God, it's so horrible for me that I can't just go back and fix my errors. I read what I just wrote and my hair stands on end."

I feel your pain. Hwaiting!

I'm in the this-show-is-sweet camp. It's breaking no new ground in any way but Ju-yeon is adorkable. That '90s fashion vibe, and the love of hair bands and manwha, is hilarious, and he just owns it so completely. At first I thought they were trying to make him look cool and that was horrifying, but I love that he's still the giant geek that he was at 15, underneath the snazzy suits. I hope his grandma sees the error of her ways but is not forgiven. She's just evil.

4

Yes. Firing people out of pettiness because you like to fire people is the characteristic we all like least. Then you have the spectacle of the director (or the nuclear weapons expert, say) being rehired. Who knew that this person's work was actually important? Everyone but you.

This is why, in real life, you should never let a chaebol heir, or the rich failson of some cold, unfeeling wealthy person, run anything. They will run it into the ground.

And finally I can understand and even relate to the FL - that was just the explanation I needed to root for her. Now, in Episode 9 (which is a bit late, show), I finally get it. Having to be the grown up with noone to rely on is hard at any age, even more so when you're just a child, and it's worse when you thought you had someone and then that someone … turns out to be tiny puppy with a thing for melodrama.
I also get Ha-jin - Shin-won is the very definition of "coming on too strong", I felt suffocated just watching him. They'll be fine, if he learns to back the hell off a little. Or a lot.
Grandma should look for a spot as a space tourist.

I genuinely enjoy this drama so much! Sure, there is angst and yes, they had a traditional breakup in ep. 9... But they talked it over! They apologized and moved on! and they're just so cute together! (BTW, the quick resolution of the breakup is such a strength of these 12-ep shows.)

the scene where Soo-jung politely and calmly stood up to Evil Grandma... Mentally, I was going "Yass queen!"... It took 20 years for a grown adult to point out the old lady was blaming her misfortunes on a child!

I also really respect Chief Kwon. At the mercy of a chaebol and she still did the right thing. Didn't let the paycheck stop her from helping Juyeon however she could... Well, she's might be in *her* jobless era, but she can finally open up a diner and gently nudge her schoolteacher daughter into marrying the hot NIS agent.

P.S. Okay, when Soo-jung kissed Ju-yeon, my first thought was more "isn't he super sick right now? the germs must be having a field day!"

This was my first thought when they both got kicked-out: two such competent people will be snapped up by a competitor and take Gramma's empire down.

When he shows up in his suit at the end, I figured he must have done something smart with his stocks and the board and basically went over Gramma's head because everyone recognizes that he's the brains here and she's incompetent. I hope it's something like that. Gramma didn't seem to know anything about it, so I hope he didn't make some deal with her.

That's my read on the situation too, as in I think he has a calling card that allows him to control the narrative during the high profile ceremony or swing shareholders' sentiments in his favour.

I don't think he struck a deal with Nana, cos there was a phone call: she stepped out, and the staff were scrambling so her absence was clearly not in the script for them. Then he swooped in.

I think many of us can have a higher tolerance of abuse in the hands of family, we put up with it UNTIL they touch a certain loved one. And then, you snap

I love that one, too!
But I would love extra much that *exactly* what grandma had been advocating all these years became her downfall. Or, that *and* her hypocrasy.
1) It's a typical wrong standpoint that only good feelings are "feelings" and should be avoided when making business. She has tried for all these years to strangle him, while saying he let irrational things like emotion have an influence, while she has let al her sorrow be anger, and let all her anger loose on a little orphan boy, her own grandchild at that. SHE is the one ruled by emotions.
2) She is letting her emotions ruin the company. I would love if all the other shareholders could see that and joined forces to get her out, elevating the obviously more-than-qualified chaeboy to her position, from where he saves the company.
and
3) there should be no forgiveness. F that! It's just way too late. Especially considering he was a little boy whose parents died with him in the car, and she did nothing to comfort him. Only a monster would be like her. She should have been all over him with hugs and and a mixture of "You can cry on my shoulder, my dear boy" and "Let's do something fun. It's okay to laugh, even if you cry before and after".
He should not be triumphant that he could not forgive her, he should just have had enough.
4) As for her, I would like her to feel her loneliness, but I don't want her to illogically suddenly gain a heart. So, how about this: As long as she can remember, she has never needed those weak things others need, friendship and stuff. She hardly knows herself, but she has been filling the void of friendship instead with connections. And she has been filling the void of persons really close to her instead with people she could order about. She doesn't know about being with someone and not ordering them about, but now she has no son or grandson that she can order about and call "family", and also no faithful secretary that admires her and does her bidding.
She is still making up stories about how others are to blame, but that's a lie that gets weaker all the time. And she was thrown out of her own company for harming it with her oh, so rationel decision to fire the best people in current key positions.
She is more alone than she can even acknowledge, because she is so caught in her pride that she can only feel the frustration, but not change in a way that could get her actual friends or actual forgiveness.
Muahaha!!!
And the good guys of course live happily ever after.

When Strawberry and Black dragon found out who they were, Black dragon was definitely the more mature first. For him what mattered was the present, and he also acknowledge that he hurt her in the past and he wasn't the only one suffering.

The MFL kind of annoy me with her long blank expressions but I couldn't help feeling sad for her when she broke-up and cried to her dad. Loving the dad btw he's just so sweet and supportive.
Fortunately the whole nonsense only lasted one episode and they didn't drag it much.

Loving the secretary as much as I loved the seretary in My Demon, I love when secondary characters are great like that.
I really hope they don't forgive the grandma but I have little hope, I still remember how horrible was My Secret Garden grandma and yet they took the grand kids to her...

I loved the SL relationship but what happened in episode 10 was a bit much? Like she agreed to be with him but when he worries a bit about her safety she pushes him back greatly? Or maybe we lack context or I just didn't get it. Having him just following her around all day in top of her job is also too much imo xD.

Can't wait to see how everything unfold.

Thank you for the recap. 🍓🎮🐉

Am I the only one still holding out hope for in-game scenes. 🤷‍♀️ Probably yes. Sigh, the writer must not be a gamer after all. 😢 Anyway at least uri OTP have finally after much hemming and hawing and soul searching which they actually had ten years to do *smh* have probably (hopefully!?) done now and have acknowledged that only they were not wronged, the other person was hurt too - perhaps beyond what they imagined.

So to compound upon the noble idiocy and breakup blues we also have Halemoni woes. Ah! Secretary Kwon actually knew about the whole OTP shenanigans. Hee, she seemed too smart not to know. 🫰🏻

Black Dragon playing house with Strawberry's family was so cute. Both Appa and dongsaeng love him don't they. I didn't even mind their effusive praise of uri Dragon's cooking skills. Just look how proud Black Dragon was to declare that he is now a man who knows how to fix a door knob. 😂🤣 Well done uri Chaebol sshi. Surely you are the only one out there. 🫰🏻 Drinking chocolate milk and all is fine but I just kept hoping the OTP would play the game which brought them together.

Just get a move on folks and wrap this up. We have only two hours left in which it seems unlikely that we will either get in-game scenes or much OTP fluff.

Er, remind me why Ha-jin and Shin-won broke up again. By the way good riddance of the ex and well done Mom on supporting her daughter on knowing about the actual reason behind the divorce. Of course she just has to immediately ship her with Shin-won doesn't she. 😂

Perhaps both the lovelines will be hurriedly wrapped up and Halemoni will get a redemption arc. Just another day in dramaland. Wae mwo.
