Episode 13 had a couple real comedic bright spots: First, Our FL’s drunken mom being carried home by the man she now calls “Baldy”- the Brewery Manager. But even funnier was the Blind Date at the end of the episode. The last time we had such a wonderful attempt by the FL to sabotage a blind date was in the first episode of BUSINESS PROPOSAL. Of course, our ML overhears the whole thing. I am looking forward to tomorrow, when we will get the other two blind dates.
Gyul is coming to see Seri and her parents- and thanks to Bom Seri is now on notice the Gyul is serious about proposing marriage. Seri is not happy.

Note: I completely agree with Baldy’s statement that Chulsoo married the wrong woman. Perhaps the most ironic moment in Episode 13 was hearing the Right Woman encouraging him to hang in there and not give up on his marriage.

Right Woman is a nice person... with regrets. Unfortunately, as we could see (and hear from others) Ungrateful Selfish Wife is not a very nice person, the long separation didn't help either. That relationship is gone and I think Professor Brother could see it after his talk with said Wife.

I'm glad Bom told her. Seri should know... and it may help her to realise that she is falling for Professor (she even had a kdrama moment in the library! 😁).
Can't wait for the continuation of the blind dates!!

This is crisis time for Seri. She may be falling for Professor but in the end, he is not right for her and Gyul is. But it may be that this romantic interlude will serve to clarify for her what she really wants. She does not want to run LX Hotel- that is her otherwise loving mom's ambition and not her own. She is more focused on being a wife and mother.
It is not hard to see why: Just look at her parents. In her mind becoming Chairman of Lynx group mean being like her dad. Being a wife and mother means being like her mom. Which would you want to be.
Oddly enough though being a good wife to Gyul would mean actual participation in LX Hotel in another way precisely because her mom is right in thinking that Gyul is not suitable and has no interest in it: He will own a substantial chunk as a stockholder and should sit on the Board of Directors. With her advanced business education, she can indeed take Gyul's place as a board member without having it consume most of her life as it would if she were chairman. Serving on the board in his place would allow Gyul to concentrate on medicine as opposed to reading financial statements and proposals. Even her gentle demeanor would be a calming influence in the board meetings.
In contrast to Se-ri our Maknae has been taught leadership skills at the Naval Academy by the ultimate experts on that subject and has used those skills in the toughest of real-life situations: He knows how to plan, to pay attention to the details, to make and give clear instructions and to care for his people- all the things that lead to successful results. He has a completely different vision of leadership than the one that Seri has grown up with. Among other things he knows that shouting is no way to talk to your people (unless you are out in high winds and have to just to be heard): Speaking calmly on the other hand inspires confidence.
It is my hope that what the writer has in mind is that Se-ri's mom reconcile herself that perhaps it would be better if her other child inherited the leadership of LX Hotel (Note: we have not had the birth secret 'revealed' yet, so I am making an assumption about that).
Bottom line here though is that first we will see a real conflict between Seri and her mom. It will be all the more poignant because this will be the first time there has been one and I suspect that neither one will handle it well.

I don't know whether Gyul is the right guy for Seri, maybe yes, maybe not, we know very little about him. What we know is that Seri is not in love with him right now, she sees him as Oppa only in the Brother sense... and is being pushed into something romantic only by her surrounding. However, her true romantic feelings are being awaken only now (and I suspect for the first time in her life), for Professor Brother. It is a crush, naïve and unrealistic (so far), but that's how Seri feels. For the record, I don't think she and Professor are making a good couple (and honestly I didn't like that Seri made those pictures of Hani without permission), but like you I also think that this crush is her chance to actually grow up and start thinking what she wants from love... and life.
I like your ideas about the positions of Gyul, Seri and Maknae in LX Hotel... though I'm afraid Writernim will choose differently.

That is indeed how I see the crush and its purpose.
I also see that Gyul will have to grow up and properly woo Se-ri instead of taking her for granted. It is not enough for him tp have realized that he has feelings for Se-ri- because love and marriage is a two way street and Seri is not just his for the asking. At this point one would have to ask why would Seri have an interest in him? Because she has been told to? That is not how it works.
So the crush serves another purpose: Getting Gyul to wake up and realize that he needs to do something about his feelings and that he needs to appreciate Se-ri going forward.
Writernim may indeed have different ideas but I just like the thought of Seri patting Gyul's hand and telling him that he needn't worry his pretty little head about the Hotel....

Part of my idea for these three is a desire to see a future scene where Seri is patting Gyul on the hand and telling him not to worry his pretty little head about the hotel...

I'm only skip-watch this drama - ie watching the KBS without sub clips at YT. Judging the comments there, the most popular couple out of the five combinations is .... Professor+Seri. They all said that this is their favorite couple of this drama. I think Hani plays a part. I'm not sure Gyul will be the end game as I cannot detect any intention from the writer to shape him as a substantive character although things might change later.

My favourite couple is Gwangsuk and Mr Hedgehog. 🙂
Then Gwanksuk and Mom 😄... and Mom and Baldy.
I also like the quiet friendship of Second Brother and Convenience Lady (aka the Right Woman).
And sweet Bom and shy Maknae.
Professor and Seri is actually a couple I have my doubts about right now.
(The less we say about Idol Brother, the better.)

Gyul still feels like just a character on paper—there’s no real depth to him yet, so it’s hard to ship him with Se Ri. I think the writer intentionally made him dull to push Se Ri toward the Professor. I might be in the minority, but I actually like how different Se Ri and the Professor are on so many levels. It’ll be interesting to see how their dynamic unfolds down the road. My favorite future couple is by far Gwang Suk and Chairman. His unsuccessful struggle to get her out of his mind is just too cute. Gwang Suk, on the other hand, isn’t there yet—understandably so—but she’s such a caring person to those around her. I really admire her!

This forming bond between Eagle Brothers and Gwangsuk is for me one of the strongest elements of this weekender and it was touching to see all of them gather and come to visit Gwangsuk and apologise.... and share some troubles.
We have consequently witnessed another quarrel between Mom and Gwangsuk (and I call them love quarrels). Mom very well sees the love Gwangsuk has for Eagle Brothers and that she is ready to share whatever she has with them (as was later confirmed by Gwangsuk offering sharing profit with Ungrateful Wife). And that's exactly what upsets Mom, I think. She wants Gwangsuk happy and she is worried that Gwangsuk is burying herself in Eagle Brewery and losing her best years... she doesn't want Gwangsuk to end up lonely as herself. She wants her to start anew and that's why she arranges the blind dates....
...which start spectacularly. 😂
Gwangsuk has definitely no intention to start a relationship now and her strategy made me laugh loudly (I think she was also testing the guy and had fun with his sweating 😁... Uri Mr Hedgehog witnessing this all was a comedy cherry on top. 😄)
The other thing is, Gwangsuk looks really happy making makkoli... and I hope Mom soon understand it as well (Baldy will help her 😁)... and I also hope for some scenes between Mom and Eagle Brothers (let's start with Maknae!) when they start bonding and Mom realises that they may become HER family as well.

You are right that the quarrels between Mom and our FL are indeed love quarrels and arise from mom not wanting the FL to end up alone. Except that one of the nicest and yet most ironic love stories in this Weekender seems to be that mom is not going to end up alone either. She now even has a pet name for her new guy, who does not mind being called "Baldy".
I also see her coming to accept the brothers as her family.
Next love quarrel: When mom finds out what happened with the blind dates.....

Episode 13 is about Dreams and Nightmares. It is fitting that on St. Patrick’s weekend, snakes are the key metaphor. St. Patrick is that he stood atop an Irish hillside and banished snakes from Ireland—prompting all serpents to slither away into the sea. Snakes, as a Biblical reference, generally connote evil.
There are plenty of vipers in full hunting mode: So Yeon who still wants the brewery sold; Ok-Boon who is shocked when told she is a stalker; Mi-Ae is slithering to make sure Gyeol proposes to complete her golden wedding plans; and Young-Eun is still waiting in the weeds to strike Boem-Soo if he lets his guard down. CEO Han truly believes Gwang-Sook is a gold digging snake, now after a blow up about inheritance, to blind date fangs about getting out of debt with a new, rich husband. (Again, Han does not know the full story on why Gwang-Sook is acting this way . . . to scare off suitors so she can run her business.)
I was surprised that So Yeon and Gwang-Sook had another talk. GS wants to clear the air and apologize, which should be mutual. Final clarification is GS is 100 percent owner of the brewery and has taken on 100 percent of the massive debt. But GS believes her brothers-in-law are moral partners in the family business so she will share profits with them when the debt is resolved. But So Yeon only hears an “admission” of inheritance so she presses for an immediate sale. But GS gently pushes back to tell her Chun-Soo is a good man and that she should give him a chance. But SY has made up her mind and strikes back at any marital advice.
We are getting a more dream-like aura of Seri coming to fantasize about the “concept” of marriage with a partner like Beom-Soo, but not necessarily him directly. She is clearly stunned by the news Gyeol will propose to her next weekend, and she pulls back by telling Bom he may change his mind (meaning she may change her mind.) Part of the problem is her mother is pushing, scheming and demanding that she take over and inherit the hotel while Seri’s current feelings about marriage drift toward being a wife and mother.
Han is right. He has no interest in Gwang-Sook’s personal life or explanations. GS’s TMI may stem from being an only child. She now feels she has a big family of four brothers, and that makes her happy, purposeful and secure. The arguments with her mother are getting more intense, but they are both manipulate compromise thorough acts of kindness.
Joo-Sil tempers her kindness with unfiltered truth. She speaks her mind undiplomatically when she shouts the Eagle Bros are leeching off her daughter (it could be read that way) but Gwang-Sook counters that it is her position as the de facto head of the family to look out for them. Joo-Sil now has a cheeky nickname, Baldy, for our Brewmaster . . . of all the relationships on the racing form, this one that has had the most skinship.
The last snake in the episode is Silla CEO. His R&D team can make an acceptable premium liquor...

.... at a huge loss that angers him to no end. His secretary clearly states Jang-Soo’s long range plan of making his own starter, using aging pots and buying pure bedrock water as the keys to both cost control and premium flavor. Since Silla cannot compete fairly, and CEO has tried to poison the relationship between Eagle and LX Hotel (with some effect), I fear that he will actually poison the Eagle’s water supply to destroy his competitor.

She will be but, more importantly, she is no dummy and can explain to her Oppa that his mistake was in taking Seri for granted. If Se-ri were pushed into a marriage it would be a disaster for both her and Gyul and Bom would see this truth and does not want that for either her friend or her Oppa.
Gyul needs to make Seri important and show her that she is valued.
Bom is the only person who is in a position to explain things to her Oppa. I hope that she does.
Then perhaps her Oppa can turn around and explain to their Appa what Maknae means to Bom and also that she will never meet a finer man.

Episode 14 gives us a Maknae with the cast off. Thank goodness.
The stadium organ music as our FL declares each suitor ‘Out!” was a nice touch. Only her wiles did not work on number 3. Mom finds out, of course. And then Date #3 appears at the Brewery. There was a really fun scene with mom present. Followed by a date- our fine suitor is a golf pro (and lo and behold our ML is there at the driving range for a group outing with VIPs).
We and Seri got to spend some serious time with Hani- who was delightful until she was sick.
Things are getting strained between Se-ri and her mom- and Seri was definitely not acting excited to have Gyul at the dinner table. She was pleasant and hospitable but not excited.
In very stark contrast was Bom who lit up like a lightbulb at the news that Lieutenant Oh was going to be invited to dinner at her house. It looks like their story is about to get back on track.
We ended on another comic note: Our ML doing a faceplant at the driving range (to the tune of “Dido’s Lament”, I believe) and the sound of our FL’s laughter.

Now that the marriage talk is getting serious, Seri is beginning to feel overwhelmed. It's no surprise she dipped on the food preparations with Mom the first chance she got.
Apart from an excuse to leave home, Seri is genuinely smitten by Hani (who isn't?) and I love that her affection for the adorable kid has little to do with the Prof daddy.

Now that you mention it that is how it seems to me. She was actually wincing a couple episodes back when she overheard Hani's dad yelling at Hani's mom. This is too much like her own dad for Seri to want Professor Brother- but Hani is another matter. I do think that she does feel genuinely sorry for him though- but that is not romantic desire.
Seri and Hani are a non-romantic couple indeed- in the last episode we even see Hani recognizing and reaching for Seri.
It is a reminder to us all that the non-romantic relationships in Weekender stories are as important as the romantic ones. Our FL's relationship with her mom and with her brothers-in-law are important elements to our tale. We might soon see that the friendship of Seri and Bom play a critical part in our story

The piece is "Lascia ch'io pianga" (a K-Drama favorite alongside Caccini's/Vavilov's "Ave Maria") which is far more amusing in this context than "Dido's Lament." I recommend the "Farinelli" film version of "Lascia," and while Sumi Jo's "Ave Maria" is really good, I prefer David DQ Lee's older version (not the more recent ones you can find on YouTube) for personal reasons.
Compared to Dido's tragic "When I am laid in earth/May my wrongs create/No trouble in thy breast/Remember me but ah/Forget my fate," the line "Let me weep over/my cruel fate,/and let me sigh for/liberty" cleverly hints that someone's freedom has flied away from them.

For those who want to see and hear it in its original setting "Lascia ch'io pianga" can be found in Act 2 of Handel's Opera RINALDI.
FARINELLI is an interesting biographical film that is well worth viewing and does indeed have an excellent rendition of the aria.

I guess he is probably a former Pro. If he was very successful, he would be playing in the US or European Tour (or LIV in which last year's KPGA champion went after earning a record $730k in Korea.) Only 20 Korean men golfers made more than $200,000 in prize money in 2024 (women's tour is more popular with more events).
Besides, the character seems more like a hustler and a country club pro.

Gwangsuk worrying about Second Brother and then comforting him and listening to his pain... 😭... (why was Wife so unnecessarily cruel??).
This was luckily balanced by a lot of cute Hani 😍 (yay! @Unit ...and we also got a promise of a meeting between Maknae and Hedgehog family! 💃)
In the meantime, Mr Hedgehog is leaving some important guests to check something even more important, yes, the progress of Gwangsuk's blind dates. 😁 (And then he spends some time by listening to classical music to calm his mind 😄, a thing his children notice.)
Mom is also checking Gwangsuk's progress and soon discovers how Gwangsuk sabotaged everything. So when the third suitor appears at the doors of the brewery, Gwangsuk has no choice but to leave with him, for a golf lesson, with VIP guests from LX Hotel, with uri Mr Hedgehog around, of course. And he is so distracted by the beautiful gold-digger (who turns out to be a very good golfer by the way, yay!) that he manages to make a laughing stock of himself by missing the ball completely and diving to the ground... and Gwangsuk does laugh... and so did I. Sorry Mr Hedgehog, it looked really funny... and you sort of deserved to be a bit knocked down from your pedestal. 😁

Episode 14 shows us sabotage speed dating with Gwang-Sook teaching a master class. CEO Han is both cringed and intrigued by the three blind dates. But victorious Gwang-Sook forgot about the feedback loop: her mother would hear from her friends what had happened. Joo-Sil was not amused by her daughter’s behavior. But in another clever twist, the gregarious Golf Pro shows up to have an unannounced second date at a screen golf event. Of course it is sponsored by Han so cue another award interface. (This was a script perk for Uhm Ji Won, who is an avid golfer in real life.) Han gets his private lesson but is totally distracted by GS’s presence that he wildly flails with his tee shot, sliding down the grass. Only GS laughs at the slapstick result which puts her in a different realm than Han is used to.
Speaking of taking a dive, Chun-Soo’s wife So Yeon is definitely hiding a major secret. Her memorized script of insults and demands is masking something else that happened in the US. When Chun-Soo asks if she has a boyfriend, she denies; when he touches her she cringes and is repulsed (which made me think did she get abused in the States to the point she hates all men?) Koreans loath to discuss or get mental health therapy, but Chun-Soo having a breakdown reaching out to his dead brother was a sad repudiation of his life.
I have come to realize the Zumba Brother story line is just a place for the writer to dump all the standard k-drama misinformation into one trash heap. Prime example, hiring a private detective with 15 years of police certification? Totally false. Private detectives were illegal until 2020. Under the law, PDs are severely restricted in services. Contrary to public perception, private investigators will still be prohibited from collecting evidence in criminal and civil cases and locating the whereabouts of fugitive offenders, the agency said. They will also be banned from collecting evidence on cases under investigation or trial and from gathering data to prove a spouse's cheating or tracking down the whereabouts of runaway debtors or spouses can run counter to the Personal Information Protection Act.
I still believe Seri’s pull to Ha Ni and the Professor is not love but her fantasizing about the concept of love and marriage instead of her mother’s business blueprint. It comes to harsh reality when Ha Ni is sick and she panics because does not know what to do. Despite all the writer’s clues, I still don’t think the two are a realistic or compatible couple.
Bom and Gang-Soo are much more in real chance of love category. Bom likes his traits of strength and kindness so she feels safe around him. That is a good starting point to explore mutual feelings for each other. Her brother is about to set them back up. About time.
We do get the worn childhood fate flashback of Chun-Soo comforting young Mi-Sook. I think it is a fine memory for her, but I also think she was sincere in her advice to Chun-Soo to fight for his marriage...

Some people have noted that we actually know very little about Gyul (or Gyeol-I believe that both spellings are permissible). At this point we know that he is a doctor, a nice guy, a loving Oppa to Bom, thinks well of our Maknae and has feelings for Seri which she does not at this point reciprocate. Perhaps we did not really need to know up to this point as his only purpose in our tale has been to explain why Maknae had to leave Naval service against Maknae’s wishes and as the object of the ambitions of Seri’s mom. He is also the reason we know that Maknae is romantically inexperienced and shy around women (I still think of their story as Maknae and the Princess and that this will be a really fun romance- please do not let me down, writer-nim).
Unless the writer wishes to use Gyul as little more than a cardboard cutout this will now have to change. I doubt that Se-ri’s lack of romantic interest cannot be hidden for much longer and that should come as a shock to Gyul. He no doubt thinks that he is quite a catch (which is true) but will have to wake up to the fact that ‘being quite a catch’ is not all there is to forming a deep and lasting romantic relationship. Dramawise the Education of Gyul is rich with potential (and good thing that this is a weekender so that it can be told, assuming that is the story writer-nim has in mind).
Of course, then there is the story of Se-ri, Hani and Professor Brother. Se-ri just got a wake-up call about motherhood: There are moments when being a parent is simply terrifying. She still adores Hani but perhaps now has a more realistic understanding of things.
One thing I do know for sure is that I much prefer a love triangle (of sorts) of Seri, Gyul and Professor brother (with Hani) than the story of Zumba Brother and his two women.

I think we are at the point where Korean viewers and the network begin to shift the story lines to meet new expectations. I am a little surprised that So Yeon has been getting more screen time. I felt she could have been one and done divorce nail. But viewers must have liked her cold demeanor to ask for more of her as a primary villain character. Young-eun is still waiting in the weeds but I don't know how much Korean viewers will like a nasty custody battle over Hani.
Likewise, I wish the writer and director will continue to sandbox the makjang to the throwaway Zumba arc.
To your point about Gyul, I agree his character is not flushed out. We do know his father did not object to his career decision to go into medicine instead of business. Perhaps, his strong mother was the final factor, as Bom was also not career tracked into a role in the family business. At this point, he is a minor support character for Bom and Gang-soo's future relationship. He is a pawn in the Silla hotel inheritance marriage plan. He has not been invested in any power to change the course of others.

Zumba brother's arc is so self-contained as to not be needed at all. My hypothesis is that his story has been so unpopular that it will now be throttled back (I hope) and So Yeon will now deliver some of the makjang with Young-eun waiting to add more drama when So Yeon's story has played out. And let us face the fact that So Yeon is indeed a wonderful primary villain character who represents yet another threat to the brewery.
The writer has already telegraphed a custody battle over Hani so the question will be how much of one do we get. My hope is that our FL will talk enough sense into Professor Brother that Hani's mom will get to at least see her child on a regular basis under rules carefully spelled out in an appropriate court order.
Your description of Gyul fit's my definition of a cardboard cutout character- someone we will never really get to know who is no more than a plot device. The moment he told us that he has feelings for Seri is the moment when the writer signaled that he is destined to be more than that.
It is important to remember that as soon as Professor Brother is identified as one of the Eagle Brothers is the moment that Seri's Dad would adamantly refuse to accept him as a son in law plus there is the simple truth that Seri's mom has her grand ambition for her daughter to marry Gyul.
Plus Seri herself may soon realize that Professor Brother is the Eagle brother who is most like her father in having too much of a temper. We have seen none of that in Gyul.
If I am right in my assumptions, we will now see more of Gyul and get to know him as a person. In the end Gyul is what is good for Seri (and Seri for him), just not for the reasons that Seri's mom has dreamed of.

Jo Seung-Yeon as Gwang sook's third blind date is quite hillarious! The self proclaimed Macho Man! 😂 I'm used to see JSY in serious characters, so seeing him in such a funny character is a good change!
