Buried Hearts: Episodes 7-8

Try as our scheming villain may, he just can’t seem to pin our protagonist down for long. Whether that’s because our hero is just that good at slipping through his fingers or because those schemes aren’t exactly watertight… I’ll let you be the judge. But it’s certainly entertaining to see just what Buried Hearts will throw at us next!

EPISODES 7-8

For once, the Truck of Doom driver has a name, and he’s someone we’ve seen before. JO YANG-CHUN (Kim Ki-moo) belongs to the mercenary crew Jang-sun hired to kill Dong-joo and then torture him when that failed. Yang-chun is arrested on-scene and escorted to the hospital for (minor) injuries, while Dong-joo’s family and close acquaintances prepare Agnes’s funeral.

Dong-joo maintains a stoic front, giving no indication that he remembers Agnes at all, even as Jang-sun attempts to provoke him. But then he sticks Jang-sun with the task of receiving mourners on his behalf (Jang-sun is hilariously awkward about it, and I can’t decide if it’s supposed to be this comedic) and slips away to mete out some quick revenge.

Assisted by Won-bae (hey, he’s back!), Dong-joo kidnaps Yang-chun, beats him to a pulp, and then sends him off… somewhere. (This will become a point of contention between Jang-sun and the head mercenary, the latter of whom isn’t pleased by Jang-sun’s lack of concern for his henchman’s disappearance.) Then Dong-joo races back to the church, arriving just in time for the funeral and securing his own alibi. Only after Jang-sun leaves does Dong-joo let his eyes fill with tears, and only days later — in the privacy of the home he used to share with Eun-nam — does he let himself properly grieve for his sister.

Jang-sun is still suspicious, though, so Dong-joo announces that his memories are coming back, little by little. For instance, he remembers where Chairman Cha hid the note with the passwords to his office safes. That note, you’ll remember, has since been stolen by Eun-nam’s aunt CHA GUK-HEE (Hong Soo-hyun). But since no one else knows this yet, they’re none the wiser to the fact that Dong-joo remembers the *passwords* and simply replaced the note.

A delighted Chairman Cha misses the veiled barbs that pass between Il-do and Dong-joo and sends Dong-joo to pay Jang-sun the cash he’s been demanding in return for not overturning all the business deals he previously agreed to. Jang-sun is still feeling out the state of Dong-joo’s memories, but ultimately chases after Dong-joo with a gun to demand his money back. Dong-joo responds by snatching the gun and pointing it at first Jang-sun and then himself, successfully reducing Jang-sun to a pleading mess.

In the end, Dong-joo simply hands the gun over and walks away unharmed. But after much thought, Jang-sun decides not even 2 trillion won is worth continuing this fight. See, he’s viewed Dong-joo as an enemy since highschooler Dong-joo got into a rugby scuffle with highschooler Hee-chul. Hee-chul was in the wrong, but Jang-sun paid off the rest of the students to put all the blame on Dong-joo and get him banned from the field. When Dong-joo showed up again at Daesan and caught an “accounting error” that totally wasn’t related to a certain slush fund, Jang-sun’s annoyance with him was renewed. Now, he’s ready to eliminate the thorn in his side for good and get the money he needs some other way.

The method he chooses doesn’t seem very foolproof to me, but I guess he’s exhausted most of his better ideas already. It’s previously been established that Dong-joo is deathly allergic to cinnamon. So Jang-sun’s brilliant idea is to secretly plant cinnamon in his wife’s kitchen in place of another ingredient, so she’ll use it in the snacks she makes for Chairman Cha’s family. By Jang-sun’s logic, if Dong-joo avoids the cinnamon, he’ll be admitting his amnesia is an act, and if he doesn’t, well, he’ll be dead. (Again, that doesn’t quite sound like a win-win to me, and it hinges on quite a bit of happenstance, but at least Jang-sun has Il-do on the inside to nudge Dong-joo in their desired direction?)

Anyway, it works (mostly). Dong-joo forces the cinnamon-dusted snacks down, knowing Il-do is watching him. By the time Eun-nam tastes the snacks and raises the alarm, Dong-joo is already swelling up and gasping for air. He’s rushed to the hospital, but not expected to live through the night. And Jang-sun and Il-do have the audacity to start planning his funeral to Chairman Cha’s face before Dong-joo has even been declared dead. Much to their dismay, Dong-joo survives, and Eun-nam takes note of the disappointment on their faces.

That sends her on an investigation. Minutes before the cinnamon incident, Dong-joo had angrily pointed out that the worst misfortunes befall him when she’s around. He’s right, of course, but Eun-nam discovers another common factor: people connected to Jang-sun were also present at each catastrophe. The most shocking being that Il-do and his boat appeared in the background of that video Dong-joo made for Eun-nam right before being shot.

Alongside her investigation, Eun-nam also officially asks Hee-chul for a divorce. He tries every argument he can think of — he’s loved her since the moment he saw her, she’ll have to give up her Daesan shares if they separate, maybe they could at least have a kid together first? — but her mind is made up. Especially after Hee-chul admits part of him wanted to marry her specifically because she was his old rival’s ex.

Divorce won’t be easy to procure — it means breaking the contract with Jang-sun, which means a heavy fine for Eun-nam and her family — so she tries blackmail. She sends Jang-sun photos of his henchman at Agnes’s accident site and of Il-do on his boat, correctly guessing that Jang-sun is trying to make Il-do the next Daesan figurehead — which will be difficult if he’s embroiled in murder accusations. Jang-sun agrees to meet with Eun-nam, but secretly has her followed.

At the same time, he sends Il-do in to finish Dong-joo off (this time they opt for the good old-fashioned “syringe of ominous liquid added to the IV” route). The head mercenary beats Il-do to it, but it doesn’t matter because Dong-joo wakes up just in time to fight back, and he and Il-do make intense eye contact through the window.

Honestly, I think Il-do is better at this whole villain thing than Jang-sun is. While Jang-sun is playing weird mind games with his nephew’s old nemesis and flip-flopping on whether he really needs that slush fund, Il-do is slowly worming his way into every facet of the family business. Each new secret he learns — from Chairman Cha’s dementia to Guk-hee sneaking cash from the safe — he uses as leverage to make himself the person everyone is supposed to report to first. Plus, I find his tension with Dong-joo to be far more interesting than that between Dong-joo and Jang-sun.

Of course, Jang-sun still has the financial and social leverage to keep Il-do in check (for now), and there’s still the matter of that mysterious Elder Jang-sun reports to. But if any of these men has the makings of an evil puppet master, I’d say it’s the one who watched an alleged amnesiac choke down food he knew would kill him and asked straight-faced if he wanted more.

I don't watch this cause I feel it would be too stressful (though sometimes I'm tempted cause I want to see the action or revenge scenes) but it's always something to me when rich or privileged do wrong and then have the audacity to be offended by the person they wronged.

I don't understand why they are so determined to kill him as if his mere existence proves their mediocrity and/or incompetence (though I suppose it does haha). But when he had no memory, they still wanted to kill him. He wasn't even a threat then!

And ugh, how gross to want your rival's ex just to spite them. It's like "tell me you're an absolute loser without telling me".

However, I do wonder if Eunnam is gonna need up pregnant and it will be Dong Joo's baby.

I don't know why I am enjoying this so much! It is so makjang and oh so unbelievable but I can't have enough!!! Maybe its because of PHS? I have never seen him in this scenario and I like it!

I have nothing to add on this weeks story line. I like no one. Not even Secretary Gong because even she seems suss. I just want DJ to win and I don't even know what he is fighting against to begin with.

I like the bearded guy. He is very helpful. I also like Madame Pi because she seems in on it. So far there appear to be his only 2 allies. Hopefully we’ll see the hacker girl back too.

While I don’t think the female doctor is bad I worry she’s a bit too gullible like the doctor brother in law and will be used as pawns.

Speaking of pawns I am glad SDJ called out YEN for being a source of his troubles especially since she has been used as a pawn so many times. It took her long enough to figure out her role. Hopefully she can redeem herself now although I don’t think she has SDJ’s street smarts so likely she may end up being a damsel in distress. While it is not a bad idea to try to blackmail your way out of marriage you now regret, so far it seems she has underestimated her opponent. However clearly she can’t die this early so maybe she’ll have a plan B (maybe a bun in the oven which is SDJ’s but she can claim it’s HC’s for now. HC will be too proud to admit they haven’t consummated yet so he will have to go along with the charade especially since he has shown a stubborn pride and would never admit defeat to his arch rival.)

Honestly, the love story - the basis of this entire heartbreaking plot - is its weakest link. I wish SDJ has left his YEN memories behind. Hence his calling her out was one of the finest moments of this series.

As for her pregnancy - has SDJ not been gone for a really long time? I'm sure it's been more than nine months now between his disappearance and now his reappearance.

I think the flashback from 8 years ago of SDJ being the one who found the error of the embezzlement that HID did for Yeom and Chairman Cha refusing to fire SDJ but offering to “forget” the embezzlement as payment, is one of the main factors for why HID and Yeom hate SDJ. It happened a 2nd time when Yeom told Cha about YEN and SDJ and Cha again refused to fire SDJ. Also I think it really bothers Yeom’s pride that a nobody like SDJ whom he easily got rid of with the rugby thing with a little bribery can be standing in the way of him getting enough money to wield political clout either through his embezzled slush fund or by taking over Daesan. He doesn’t care which which way to get it but at times one seems easier than the other. Initially the slush fund is easier if they can torture the code from SDJ. Then when it looks like he really lost his memory they tried killing his sister to bring it back. So whenever he thinks SDJ is blocking both (with both passcodes) he can’t afford to kill him. But anytime a little possibility exists for a different path to the money (like now how Cha’s dementia makes him think the Daesan takeover is more likely) his anger/hatred wins out and his desire to just kill SDJ.

Yeom and SDJ basically played a round of chicken with SDJ’s life with the gun scene. SDJ purposely left the ring to force a decision whether they were really going to keep trying to kill him or if their desire for the code to the slush fund was more important. Gambling with your life was a bit crazy because there was no guarantee they didn’t really just want to kill him when he put the gun to his head. Luckily they didn’t call his bluff although his willingness to eat the known cinnamon tainted cookies really suggests he is willing to see it to the end no matter what. This is a slow game of chess where SDJ is finding a way to box HID and Yeom out forever from Daesan and remove them from power. When he is following Yeom through the sewers to identify the Elder I assume he is trying to get to the head and find a way to undermine/destroy Yeom’s influence and power. If all he wanted was a killing spree revenge he could have killed Yeom with the gun but instead he wants a deeper more meaningful revenge of stripping Yeom and HID of all they hold dear whether it’s power, money or maybe even people.

As our recapper mentioned, I also don't know if baddie Jang-sun receiving mourners at the funeral was supposed to be funny, but I have to say I was totally laughing. The way Jang-sun stood there, with the "you've got to be kidding me with this" look on his face, was just hilarious.

For sure SDJ did it to spite him/unnerve him but his uncomfortableness was pretty funny. By asking Yeom to stand in he was subtly calling out Yeom’s fake concern and forcing him to play the role of the chief mourner who has to receive the condolences from the guests. I laughed when Yeom had to keep bowing lower to try to be lower than the nun.

I think they should have utilized that guy's comic timing instead of trying to portray him as cold blooded. He is not very impressive as a villain but the funeral scenes were funny.

Jang-sun’s logic is weird. There is someone behind him who wants the money. How it will work if he kills the only person who can get it? His pride is so important for him that he's ready to loose so much money... because of what happened with a teenager...

Il-do is kinda the most interesting character. I like how he navigates between his conscience and his greed.

They should really need to stop the romantic side of this drama. It doesn't work at all for me.

There is a birth secret there with DJ that we can all guess which I am thinking our main baddie is aware of. Maybe he was aware of it since he was a teen. Otherwise the amount of hate makes no sense.

I don't dislike YEN as much as many do. I don't like her either, but I think I can understand her. I feel like she is a very naive person who tends to act rashly without much strategic planning. Is that a flawed character? For sure! However not everyone in the show can be clever or else there wouldn't be a plot. I do think she truly loves SDJ and was very happy with him in their relationship and maybe thought of it more like a love fling rich people do before they choose the political loveless marriage (think Dirty Dancing). She hid who she was from him from the beginning probably because she was worried that he otherwise would be with her for her position at Daesan and his ambitions. From the conversation on the phone before the wedding she had previously been trying to block it, so she isn't easily or happily entering it. She doesn't have much leverage though because if she refused, they could have just cut her off from the family and livelihood. Just staying with SDJ was unlikely to work because he worked for Daesan and if their illicit relationship was discovered they both would have been kicked out to the streets. Ultimately, she thought she could just let SDJ go and follow through with the marriage. She underestimated her own love for SDJ and overestimated how much leverage the stocks she was promised would help her to prevent her mother and stepfather from taking over Daesan. I think she regretted her choice fairly early but felt trapped by it. At this point I worry she is too naive to be able to deal with these vile men on the same level. I don't think she understands to what extent they will go to get what they want although she's starting to get an idea. I would just be happy if she finds a way herself to stay out of trouble and not get in the way of SDJ's revenge.

This would all make sense if the premise of her character was not that she believes Il Do killed her father with her mother's help. So she's known for decades how far people would go to get what they want. That's why her character doesn't make any sense. Viewers are working over time to rewrite the character because it doesn't make any sense. Take for example her marriage. She's known that SDJ original planned on marrying the "real" version of her. The chairman would have encouraged it. She knows that, so if she wanted to be with him, she could just do that. They were together long before her arranged marriage was even a thing. She could have married SDJ and gotten her shares. So why did she make the choices she did? "Reasons". She was leaving SDJ, why not break up with him after she made her choice instead of via text during her wedding? "Reasons". Since she's had said shares, she's done what? Nothing. Why? "Reasons". She leaves her in-laws home and does not go to a hotel or any of the other properties (they are sure to own) but returns to the house where the killer of her lover lives and has total control, with all of the evidence in hand (literally). Why? "Reasons". (That's the second time Il Do catches her with a phone. Doors don't lock in that house?) From the first week viewers have been trying to explain her actions (maybe she was blackmailed into the marriage) and every week we've been shown that the only explanation for her behavior is "Reasons". For example this week's plans: with all that evidence in hand of how Il Do and Jang Sun are willing to kill to get what they want, it absolutely doesn't occur to her that she would in danger? There's a word for that, but it's not naivety. Why not show that evidence to her grandfather, or meet with the person who gave it to her in the first place to ask questions? No not everyone can be a mastermind sure, but her lack self-awareness is telling. I think her only purpose as a character is to be a catalyst for the makjang. So it's almost a requirement that she makes no sense. Why does she do what she does? "Reasons".

Reasons indeed, her "character" is really awful. Well stated chingu.

The whole Nancy Drew thing with her is driving me nuts, all the things she's seen or suspected and she still is pulling a lame blackmail stunt just for a divorce!? Like she can't meet with an unfortunate "accident"?,she doesn't even lock the door when viewing suspicious videos- and what are the odds she backed up those photos or sent them to someone with power, like say her grandfather?!

Violent anger looks good on DJ. So is this entirely different genre's coded little habit of his to strip at every opportunity presented, non-romantic included))) PHS is giving it his all, bless him *claps*

Yeom makes no sense whatsoever, both in decision making and mood consistency (also the fact he made his unwitting sweet wife a complicit in nasty murder attempt... dude!). Honestly, no one here does - they're all clowns and occasionally a whole circus. At least HC is consistent in being everyone punchbag physically and emotionally (that's what he deserves - telling a woman he's supposedly madly in love with he largely wants her as a pissing contest trophy? way to win her heart!), while other flip-flop on a daily basis, and it's getting old.

I suppose I should praise EN for saving DJ's life twice in a row, but girl, if not for you, he may not have been in this mess at all! And she wants a divorce at all cost NOW?! After doing a whole lotta freaking nothing with her dowry shares (which it seems she never got despite getting married as planned - her fam is a scam) and powerful in-laws and this grand revenge plan of hers that consisted of... breaking DJ's heart and that's it for her achievements, really. Impressive *sarcasm* Redemption arc for her excites me just as much as watching her and DJ lovey-dovey flashbacks - infinite negative.

So we know that DJ is indeed connected to EN's dad, but how? Why? And what for was that "Chairman doesn't like cinnamon in his house", if not for the wild twist I'm sure drama doesn't have balls to pull?

Can we slow clap for PHS and his acting? Since poor @minniegupta is being a good girl and waiting 6 days for Hulu to drop, I will admire his eye acting in her stead. The scene at the funeral where he comes back “from resting” and has a stare down with Yeom just before the door closes you can see he has a subtle hidden anger and scoffing at what he had just done to his sister’s murderer masked in pretend indifference. As soon as the door closes he then subtly allows his grief to barely show and tears barely well up in his eye before he pushes all that away. Chef’s kiss!

Also the scene with the gun… sigh. Our min min has certainly matured.

I found the cinnamon allergy test ridiculous. They already know he’s regained part of his memory, so what exactly would it prove if he ate the cinnamon biscuits or not? He could have easily just remembered that he's allergic.
Aside from that, I still find Eunnam annoying. It feels like her determination for revenge by obtaining Daesan shares lasted only a single day—the wedding day. So how can she be forgiven after crushing Dong-joo’s heart in the cruelest way possible? I wish they wouldn’t end up together, but unfortunately, the show has already made its decision

Here come my thoughts.....

PHS: The Man, The Legend, The Walking Swag Factory
Look, Park Hyung Sik could be reading a grocery list, and I’d still be on the edge of my seat. The man acts with his whole face, body, and probably his tax returns. He’s carrying this show like an overworked eldest son, and we are simply witnessing greatness. While nothing will top him in Our Blooming Youth, this comes pretty darn close. Yi Hyun remains a worthy contender for my heart, but SDJ might just make me reevaluate my life choices.

The FL: Eyes That Speak, But Not For Me
She’s good. She’s got the longing down, her eyes do that emotional heavy lifting, but let’s be real—I am not rooting for her endgame. She’s the type who’ll stare soulfully at you across a lantern-lit courtyard, and you’ll believe she’s in love, but then you remember—she's not the one for my man.

The Villains: Are We Watching a Saturday Morning Cartoon?
What in the Scooby-Doo is going on with these villains? I half expect them to tie SDJ to a railroad track while twirling their non-existant mustaches. They have the depth of a puddle, and yet, somehow, they keep things entertaining in a ‘so-bad-it’s-good’ way.
Il Do: A Masterclass in One Expression Acting
Listen, I know people are impressed, but I am not buying whatever Il Do is selling. The man has ONE look—whether he's in pain, jealous, scheming, or debating what to eat for lunch, it's the same expression. It's like his face is permanently buffering. Take the allergy scene—was he happy? Was he relieved? Was he feeling a deep existential crisis about the futility of life? We’ll never know because his face gave us NOTHING. It's tragic because his character is actually well-written. If only the actor had the range.
The Plot: Genius or Sheer Audacity?
The memory arc? Solid. The idea that SDJ is out here orchestrating an entire revolution with what seems to be one broke man and a borrowed horse (in this case, a motorcycle)? Less solid. The dude has the survival instincts of a man who knows he's the main character—willingly eating poison just to bait his enemies? Iconic. Also, Jang Sun is out here playing the most intense game of ‘Should I Kill Him?’ I’ve ever seen. And that history with SDJ? I need receipts.
On a serious note, I liked how it progressed as far as memory goes, though I find it a bit far fetched that SDJ is setting so much in motion with the help of a man who does not seem to have many resources. Meanwhile, he plot did manage well to establish how he is using his own vulnerability to draw out the villains. At this point he does not trust anyone. So his willingness to eat poison (cinnamon) made sense. I also like how Jang Sun keeps oscillating between killing him and not killing him. Also, he knows something about SDJ's childhood. Something that has made the man hate him for a very long time. Something dark went down between them, and I’m ready for the tea.
YEN: The Queen of Self-Sabotage
To me, her arc...

7

Required fields are marked *

YEN: The Queen of Self-Sabotage
To me, her arc makes an awful lot of sense. This woman is selfish, driven by a need larger than her: the quest to pin her father's murder on her stepfather. The problem? She steamrolled SDJ in the process without once thinking, “Huh, maybe destroying a man’s entire existence will have consequences?” She didn't stop to think of the carnage that her decision would bring. She took SDJ for granted, and set a chain of events in motion that she now has no control over. Now she’s out here trying to undo the catastrophe she caused, but it’s too little, too late, babe. She might save SDJ a hundred times over, but she still doesn’t deserve him.

The women in this series are killing it. They are terrific and not a moment of boredom when any of them are on the screen. Men, take notes.

Final Thought: SDJ x The Doctor – A Fanfic I Would Read
Honestly, let’s manifest an ending where SDJ rides off into the sunset with the doctor instead. A logical, smart woman who actually treats him like a human being? Revolutionary. I’ll be here, waiting. One can hope.
Thoughts? Should we start a petition for the doctor ship? 😆
