Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (February 8, 2025)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

missvictrix

Love Scout: Bravo, Show! I knew you could navigate the waters of Tragic Fire Backstory and keep it in line with the rest of the drama, but I admit I was watching from behind a pillow for a few minutes there. But I love how that played out and the pace seemed nice to me. I can’t wait for Ji-yoon’s finally victory lap with her crew. The secondary to-be-romance is pulling in lots of points, too. Great side plot, great side characters — great everything, really. I love this show!

DaebakGrits

Currently covering: When the Stars Gossip

Study Group: This show is so fun! I can’t get over how much I’m enjoying a drama about a teen putting together a study group. But, let’s be real, I’m here for the epic fight scenes and quirky friend dynamics. Ga-min is ridiculously overpowered, and I hope the drama can keep coming up with new bad guys to throw at him and “test” his strength. Also, super curious to know the identity of his coach. There must be a good reason for them to intentionally hide his face.

Love Scout: I can’t believe this drama is almost over! What will I do with myself on Saturday mornings? I’ve got mixed feelings about the childhood connection cliche, but I’m willing to let it slide since our characters overcame this particular hurdle quickly and maturely. Byeol’s princess moment was super cute, but I’m waiting for the moment Byeol can introduce Ji-yoon as something more than a friend. Anyone else kind of worried Byeol’s mom is going to make a last minute appearance, though? It’s totally in the K-drama playbook for something like that to happen, but I’m hoping the writer doesn’t go there.

Dramaddictally

Namib: Oh, I have so many emotions about this. I finished it. And I can’t remember the last time I yelled at my screen so much. That’s good, I guess, since I cared enough about Yoo Jin-woo to want to adopt him myself, and I hated every person that did him wrong in any way — and that includes Kang Su-hyeon. Her character’s inability to empathize was exactly the same from start to finish, as far as I can tell, which is why it irked me so much that the drama spent its last leg having everyone around her keep reiterating how great she is and how much she’s changed. Uh, not really. She’s still acting the same as she did when we met her, which is to fix things in the way she thinks is best without communicating it to anyone else — even when it directly affects them. *exhales* But, again, my level of ire is a consequence of how much I cared about Yoo Jin-woo, so the drama did some major things right. (Even if I didn’t like how self-harm was dealt with (or not dealt with) in the story, and how this kid’s very realistic pain got brushed under the rug.) All in all, it was a captivating watch and I’d love to see the same themes picked up in other dramas (the idol underworld; handling self-harm; stay-at-home dads), but I could do without the disappointing redemption arc.

Motel California: Now we’re getting somewhere. The tension in Episodes 7-8 was perfect. I like it much better when they’re fighting themselves than when they’re fighting each other. I also love the Seoul/countryside cultural dynamic and how the city boy is so out of place in this town. It cracks me up every time he’s exasperated about trying to understand… whatever. And I continue to love and be mystified by how the central relationship seems real to me. Well, maybe not the parental-drama backstory, but the push-pull of trying to draw a line, having “good” reasons not to get together, and just not being able to stay away from each other. I sympathize. ‘Cause in real life, this would not end well.

Travelling ate into my DB time and so this covers everything I've watched in the last 2 (3? 🤔) weeks…

COMPLETED
Namib - Went way overboard with the revenge schemes and not enough time spent on the kids. FL disappearing for 2 years was so random.

ONGOING
Love Scout - Liked the Eun-ho focused episode last week though I'm past the point of finding the typical k-drama jealous ML scenes cute.

Check-in Hanyang - This one really took a turn with the SML huh? Jung Gun-joo chewing the scenery in his villainous glory was kinda fun though.

When the Stars Gossip - Still on pause…

Unmasked/Trigger - The entire stalker arc was nicely done. I assume we have our answer for Cha Seong-wook's death now though I wouldn't mind a few more twists.

STARTED
The Scandal of Chun-hwa - Despite the premise, this seems to be a fairly straightforward sageuk. But it's moving along quickly - lots of plot progress in 2 episodes. I'm in.

WATCHLIST
The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call is still languishing on my watchlist. Hopefully will get to it this week.

C-DRAMAS
Completed Breeze by the Sea, which stayed good till the end.

Dropped Reopen My Journals early on and paused Perfect Match because the MLs were intolerable.

Watching The White Olive Tree but not really feeling the angst it wants me to feel. OTP are sweet though.

Planning to watch Kill My Sins, which has great early feedback.

Can you share where you were able to watch "Scandal in Chunhwa?" I found it on a (maybe legal?) site, but the subs were awful and not timed correctly so I had to give up about 15 minutes in. But I'd like to finish the first ep at least before making a verdict.

I watched it on a darkside site and the subs were atrocious there too. But my understanding of Korean is reasonably good so I made do.

I found it on DailyMotion which is a legitimate French video sharing website which is actually owned by CANAL+. However, I have not really watched it there because I have concerns about whether the people "sharing" the video have a legal right to do so. From what little I did see while checking it out the video quality is not great. I did not watch long enough to have an opinion on the quality of the English subtitles.

Thank you for mentioning DailyMotion sharing cdramas and kdramas. I cannot figure out for the life of me how this could be legit, so at least you put more context on it. Creative content deserves to be respected. Also, DailyMotion often does have substandard subs. But realistically, once available viewers will watch.

I agree with needing to respect creative content which is why I seldom venture over to the dark side. On the other hand, the owners of that content sometimes behave irresponsibly when it comes to whom they make it available. Property law is fascinating because on the one hand we definitely need to respect ownership it also frowns upon an owner deliberately locking property up so that it is on no benefit the society because it is not put to use. {Think some of the regional restrictions that Disney+ has imposed on some shows). That is why I do not criticize those who walk on the dark side when a drama has not been made reasonably available.

Hope you give Reopen My Journals another try. Very good slice of life, much like the kdrama Reply series. Not sure which ML bothered you as they all seemed normal. But be forewarned that there will be older rural values in some episodes that will be very hard to take.

Ah sorry I think my comment wasn't clear. I paused Perfect Match because of the MLs not Reopen My Journals

For Reopen My Journals, I just felt like I had seen this story many times before in c-dramas and k-dramas (incl. the Reply series). I did quite like the Moms in the show but the kids all seemed written to type and weren't very interesting. Maybe I'll give it another try given your recommendation!

As others have said, not much new in Asian scripts these days. I am partial to cdrama slice of life of various periods during past 70 years just to learn more about every day life. Also, refreshing to hear Shanghainese dialect spoken in dramas set in Shanghai.

Live Watches
Love Scout: Ok good. We got all that unpleasantness out of the way in the first 30 minutes of episode 10, and our leads reunited in time to handle the situation with the Next CEO. I didn’t love Ji-yoon needing to get herself together but I still giggled like a fool when they walked into the office hand in hand! I’m starting to get concerned that they aren’t leaving enough time for our second leads though, since we still have to resolve the cruddy chairman issue and now we have this whole history-repeating-itself situation.

Unmasked: (not quite finished with ep 8) I was worried they were teasing a romance for a second but I’m happy to report that I think I imagined it. As ever, this show is good when they have a case of the week, but they still haven’t gotten me to care about the central mystery. But I really enjoyed the fakeout of who the stalker’s “fan” was!

Current Dramas
Check In Hanyang: (through episode 9) Well, I get why everyone was saying our prince is a bit of a dope hahaha! He put all the clues together correctly but crumpled immediately when Deok-su gave an excuse it took her less than 10 seconds to come up with. I find myself not minding one bit though. He’s cute and earnest and seems much better than his dad, and not all princes can be as sharp as Hwan 😉

K-action Movie of the Week
Officer Black Belt: It’s not a good name but it was a fun movie! I didn’t realize this was another Jason Kim story until right before I watched it but it’s suuuper recognizable as one. It establishes a super endearing bromance early on, things are mostly light and fun, then the story takes a darker turn, the heroes face a devastating defeat, and claw their way back to victory. I think it worked better here and in Midnight Runners than it did in Bloodhounds, but it could definitely work in a drama if you get the timing right. I almost wish this had been a short series because the nerdy ragtag team united with the compassionate parole officer would be fun to follow around longer!

Love Scout: I am so glad that was resolved the dad issue so quickly and we moved on. I love this drama.

Seriously, remember what it was like in episode, say, 3 of Hanyang? How off-the-rails could one show go? Who thought that blood-thirsty rampages was the way anyone would be excited to see this drama progress? Watching Jun-wha enjoying humiliating those old men when he "bought them into eating that cow's tongue" was disgusting, and not as a culinary act. Who was EVER thinking that what was missing at the beginning of this drama was moar humiliation??

I hear you two...but the (completely condescending and hateful) guy he just completely wailed on is the son of the rich woman coming to town to "save the day."

There will be no winners here and this simply wasn't the show's oh-so-pastel set up. I don't appreciate the bait-and-switch in the least, no matter how many dimples.

7

@attiton Oh yeah.... I forgot that scene (apparently conveniently haha) I'm definitely watching too many shows at the same time right now. 😂

Ok, I hear you on the problem that's been set up. Except we don't know what role she's been playing in the corruption going on around town. She certainly didn't do a great job raising her son...

3

@attiton @zindigo oh the shizzle is totally going to hit the fan! But the setup was there from the start. They've been impacted by their parents' choices and now they're playing out Part II of past consequences. I miss all the pastel shenanigans, but the opening was dark enough that the pastel felt like a weirdly fluffy interlude. It's not going on my favorites list, that's for sure, but I've enjoyed the whole thing - certainly more than some of the fusion sageuks I've seen.

4

For me, the setup "From the Start" was that the plucky interns were going to overcome their evil past. Not become the evil present where they stomp as hard as they can on one another, use each other terribly, and then insist on seeing their enemies die before their eyes.

6

@attiton @hopefulromantic
I can't wait for the post-mortem on this 😂

5

I'm with Hopeful Tigermoth here, that the sweet fluffy thing is part of the story, contrasting with where we are now, at the threshold to the final.
Right now it looks mighty dark; the key is what several leads have said: "I can't stop now". At this point, the question is whether they actually can't, or whether we will be allowed a return to happy days (though, definitely on a darker background.).
Right now it looks like everyone will end up killing everyone in some circle of revenge.

2

Newtopia (1-2): This drama doesn't have a serious bone in it's body, and it's a joy to watch. Episode 1 was a bit on the slow side, but episode 2 delivered all the crazy zombie chaos I was expecting.

Study Group (5-6): It feels like we're entering more serious territory. Still lots of fun to be had here. The gang literally racing after Ga-min and his mother to stop him from transfering was a highlight for me. Really hope Ga-min's mom manages to recover.

Love Scout (9-10): Almost as if the writer realized that the whole "connected childhood trauma" story was garbage, so they wrapped it up in 30 minutes and then didn't mention it again. But at least we got some wholesome Ji-yun & Yu-byul moments out of it. Also really liked Soo-hyun's story in the latest episode. Not gonna lie, that subplot made me more emotional in one episode than the entire childhood trauma story made me in the entire season combined.

Motel California (8-9): Episode 9 really gave quite a lot of focus to side characters, as it feels like the drama is suddenly starting to juggle 50 side plots. The new Nan-woo & Han-woo pairing proved to be a highlight here. Meanwhile, Yeon-soo's mom is still the worst, and Kang-hee's dad never fails to disappoint me either. Oh, and Esther's husband is cheating on her, because I guess the drama really wants to pair her up with Seok-kyeong?

The Queen Who Crowns (9-10): The king claims to do things for the people, but his plans effectively end up screwing them over instead. At least we have the queen, who actually cares about the people. I'm assuming that since history isn't exactly on the queen's side, her managing to appoint her other son as crown prince will be how the show gives her at least one win.

Check In Hanyang (13-14): Slowly starting to lose hope that our foursome will actually stand together at the end of all this, as Jun-hwa is inching very close to a place he can't come back from. But hey, at least Lady Seol is alive? Here's hoping she manages to survive the last 2 episodes as well.

Love Scout: Right? I was crying as Soo-hyun was telling her son about his parents and then as she cried on the playground, but I was just trying not to roll my eyes when Ji-yoon was crying about her amazing dad “abandoning her”. So glad we’re done with that part!

I felt like episode 1 of Newtopia was a fantastic set-up that made it clear exactly how our main couple love one another--which is imperfectly, but truly. They both apologize to one other when they make mistakes but also stand up for their own needs. I was also very glad that we got to know military zombie town prior to the shift into actual zombie town!

Kickkickkickkick: 🎬💸 (1) This was such dumb and silly fun! It's like a mashup of a sketch variety show and a sitcom with self-referential meta-humor. Just like with variety shows, I don't feel any urgency to keep watching, so I'm going to save episodes for days when I'm too stressed to watch anything with a plot.

Love Scout: (9) ❤️🏹 Another fabulous episode! I loved everything, starting with "You don't have to be perfect" and that hug. I loved Ji-yun continuing to be so cool and true to her values, and her mint-chocolate-chip date with Byeol. I loved jealous Eun-ho and how he graciously let Jeong-hun win at arm wrestling. Speaking of Jeong-hun, I loved his interactions with Eun-ho and Su-hyeon (Lol at his drunk self and Lee Jun-hyuk almost breaking character a couple of times). What a refreshing take on the SML (and SFL!!) role! I love how everything is coming full circle with the leads' pasts. But only one episode is not the doctor-recommended weekly dose haha! 🥲

Check in Hanyang: (13-14) 🗝 Still enjoying this one! I miss our bro squad, but I love how the relationships have gotten messy because of their competing motivations. Plot developments have revealed previously hidden aspects of our core four's character in very interesting ways. Both guys have to grapple with unwelcome reveals of their fathers' true characters and half-truths. There's probably still time for SML to redeem himself in a blaze of heroism, but the end of ep. 14 was giving me Tale of Nokdu villain reveal flashbacks (iykyk 😅). I predict ML will give the throne to his cousin, restoring the rightful line and leaving himself free to live as he likes with the FL. How will she complete her revenge? What does she really want? Two more episodes to wrap everything up!

After hearing me gush about it, Mom watched The Trauma Code: Heroes On Call last Saturday! She LOVED it!!! Next up: my persuasion campaign to see if I can get Dad to watch it 😂

When the Stars Gossip: 7.0 From "Sex In Space" to "Boring Love Geometry On Earth"? Are the two (?) babies fated to be together because of their Conception Connection? Do they come out like Alien? Fated OTP Aliens??

Check-In Hanyang: 7.5

Unmasked: 6.0 Their convolutions defeat my ability to remember what happened last week. I should have binge watched, or perhaps paid more attention.

Kick: 3.0 Parts were ok-ish, but mostly too hyper & scattered for my tastes. YMMV. I briefly had hopes when Seo Hye-won appeared but it seems that was just an ep 1 cameo. Stalled out early in ep 2.

Chunhwa Love Story: 4.0 Likely drop after ep 1. Nothing much interesting except two possible drinking games (A) spotting the reasons why they had to place this story in a fictitious country because showing Korean royals like that would have gotten them Joseon Exorcised™, and (B) spotting bad subtitles when a computer worked sentence-by-sentence and didn't understand the context. But I'm not into drinking games, so...

Newtopia: 7.0 This is the one new show I can't just blow off, mostly because the writers have credits (as assistants?) like Shop For Killers and Parasite (not Parasyte, thank goodness). The story & cast aren't great so far, but not as annoying as KickKick Chunhwa.

The combination of violent/scary stuff on screen, lighthearted music and general absurdity reminds me of Family Matters.

And somehow the idea of a zombie apocalypse seems appropriate now. Can't imagine why.

SORRY NOT SORRY (Ep 9) I may be one of a handful of Beans who is still watching this show. It was a very good episode. was very good. It starts off with the question “what is a mother” leading to the Noble Mothers making false assumption on Jay’s parentage. Then we have Chan-Yang’s joyful curiosity of motherhood, pitfalls and all, with bubbly light comedy along the way.

EAGLE BROS (Ep 1-2) Back down the weekender rabbit hole . . . and the first weekend whisks the story set-up along at light speed with FL "inheriting" her honeymoon husband's four troublesome brothers. Uhm Ji Won is an actress who can carry a show. We shall see if she can in a weekender.

Kick Kick Kick Kick I will try it for the casting.

Sorry Not Sorry I didn't watch the last episode yet.

Check In Hanyang I can't wait for it to be over...

Motel California I dropped it.

Love Scout In the first episodes, I was happy to get adulting adults and we approach the end and they're still acting like adults!

When the Stars Gossip I didn't understand why Eve covered for everybody after she almost died twice... I don't think she should be a commander anymore.

The Scandal of Chunhwa I watched the first 2 episodes with bad subtitles. So after a drama focused on sex in the space, we got a drama focused on sex during Joseon era... I was not expecting to the drama beginning with the a moderne scene in the little library of Goblin.

Study Group I watched episode 3 and 4 and I was completely bored. There are way too many fights and don't even know the opponents. I think I will stop here. The only actor who could make me continue is only a supporting cast.

I will maybe test the cdrama The White Olive Tree but this kind often lacks stubtility about patriotism...

Hi Beanies! Enjoy the weekend!

What I am watching:

_ Study Group (6/10). This is cathartic show 😂 I'm having so much fun! I love this group.

_ Check in Hanyang (14/16). If only this show had been a comedy! That's all I can say now. I hope at least my favorite character (Go Su Ra) has a happy ending.

_ C-drama Blossom (16 out of 34). An excellent show. I highly recommend it if you like epic dramas as One and Only (2021). But Blossom has a little more comedy, which I appreciate. Both leads are good characters, she is very smart and he is clearly in love with her, but she is keeping distance. This is my first drama with Li Yun Rui and he is so good looking! I wish he weren't dubbed, though.

What I have just started:

_ My Perfect Stranger (k-drama. 2023). One of the time travels shows which was still on my list. Interesting so far.

What I have finished:

_ Just Dance (K-drama. 2018). I like slice-of-life dramas but this one is quite depressing and often boring. Even the way it's shot is like a hazy dream, but there are some pretty images. I thought there would be lots of dancing scenes and funny moments but it is not like that at all. The FL is insufferable most of the time and the other girls in the Dance Sportclub aren't interesting enough. One of them has her own sub-plot, which is also depressing and annoying (and this story takes a lot of time in the central episodes). At least the ML is a nice character and there are some cute moments of the couple, like their first kiss or the reconciliation.
This drama lasts only 8 hours but it could have been shorter, maybe 6 hours are enough for this story. It has several good songs, some are OSTs and others are very famous themes.
But although the songs are lively, this drama is sad and draggy.

The FL is Yang Zi (from the currently popular Flourished Peony and last year’s major hit, Lost You Forever) and the ML is Xiao Zhan (from The Untamed & Joy of Life Season 1) 😊 It’s a super fun and light modern romance with lots of heart, especially the parts with family. I think I had not added it to my list before because of the "illness" factor. But I'm glad to see you say it's fun!

1

@isagc
The “illness” factor ties in with the feel-good, heart-tugging aspects of the drama, which may be tough to get through during the process, but it’ll feel very cathartic and worth it in the end, I promise 🥰 It’s because of the catharsis, I was not upset at the changes the drama adaptation made from the source novel. Initially, I was like, “Whyyyyyyyyyy?”, because what the drama’s script changed from the novel made it all seem so cliched, but the end did justify the means for this one. But I’ll stop here and won’t go into details for fear of being spoiler-y lol
I own a copy of the original Chinese novel and have re-read it many a times now, and I still love it, and same with the drama— re-watched it many times and still love it and revisit it every so often 🥰

I loved Blossom too! I'm done with it, but when I scroll through dramas, the poster always catches my eye. I felt like the poster really captured the name (9-layered purple), the romance, and the hopefulness of the drama.

Dissenting opinion- I didn't like Blossom very much. The drama itself was well done, it was the actual characters I ended up disliking. I thought the main lead characters were self-centered and judgemental. If they had been a bit nicer and more sympathetic and supportive, some of the other characters may not have had such evil and tragic ends.
(Open to anyone who wants to try to convince me otherwise.)

We were introduced to all 5 brothers and glimpsed into their problems, being it unemployment, single parenthood or unexpected health complication... and just when the Oldest Eagle starts uncovering these problems his brothers were hiding from him, a tragedy strikes and now everyone will need to adjust, especially our Heroine, the new wife of the oldest brother, just fresh from the honeymoon. It couldn't have been more tragic for her. She will hopefully find an understanding soulmate in our lead, a widower self, even if he is currently Mr Hedgehog, a bit prickly, still mourning his first wife.

I hate all the manipulation of Dongah Sunbae and both women should run away from him. He is full of himself and even his heroic rescue mission was more about his ego than about Eve.
Anyway, I think I'm currently watching mainly for Goeun and the 3 mothers, they should adopt her (and she them) and live happily together, tossing all men away. And then I somehow like the pairing of Ryong's Friend (Gynecologist) and Chaebol Daughter in Law.

Study Group
Gamin is precious as a friend and it was so touching seeing him sacrificing his curfew and giving fighting instructions to Sehyun.
Mom was a big surprise (badass!) and I hope there are no tragedies ahead, as I want the show to keep its humour (art school? 😂 no possible transfer because of Gamin's brilliant thinking of having too low rank? 😆) to balance all the darker sides (Hat Guy and his strange philosophy).

My Perfect Secretary
I don't understand why Jihyun wouldn't check thoroughly and get suspicious with the latest case, but let's hope the take over by Evil Hater will be short and quickly resolved and we can spend the rest of the time with Byol and her Unni and their Admirer Eunho.... and I want more of the Hwaiting Couple... and some successful cases of the week at Peoplez... and I'm curious what job will Eunho choose.

Flourished Peony finished
I think I liked Are You the One? more, but what I loved here was the growing respect and friendship between the leads.... they were so happy to just be together, eat and chat... and then that friendship turned into silent love on ML side. I found it beautifully done, even if it was sort of painful as he was afraid to profess his love in a fear of loosing their friendship.

We will have to go of course through the big fight with the archenemy King of Ning, but I hope that will be also used as a mean of cooperation between the couple and that we will see Mudan falling in love with Changyang. I also want more from the Royal Couple... and hope they will continue with the teasing (Do you have names for your kids? 😄). Also, wouldn't it be wonderful and a great revenge if New Concubine totally fails her mission, falls under Mudan's friendship spell and turns against King Ning?

Thinking of one of the last scenes of the new concubine, I think she will end as you say.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of the Royal Couple (you mean the Emperor also known as The Third and his wife, don't you? Both of them want the same, spending more time together, but they don't know that's the desire of the other one).

My wife liked ARE YOU THE ONE? better also but FLOURISHED PEONY is really good.

Could they have made our Mr. Hedgehog on EAGLE BROTHERS any more appealing? He has been mourning his wife for fifteen years. His two grown kids are so nice that you just know that under that prickly exterior there is a father who raised them with love after she passed away. In their opinion he deserves an end to his loneliness, and they have even been trying to set him up- but to no avail.

Hospital Playlist Did a rewatch of S1 along with the first couple eps of S2, which I put on hold on when it was airing, before finishing the series. S1 is one of my favorites, and I loved revisiting Yulje. While S2 wasn't quite as good, it was still very heartwarming and sweet. A perfect winter watch 🩷
Study Group I was going to stay scrubbed in and start Trauma Code, but chose violence instead. On ep 3 now and I love it! The fight scenes are fun, there are some good laughs, and Ga-min's absolute commitment to his studies and friends is adorable 📚

I caught up yesterday with Study Group (tho by ffw’ding the brutal fights now) and Love Scout #9 (hopeful they end the angst pronto). Pleasantly surprised they’ll screen 10 and 11 this week. Or not? Sometimes kdramas work best in pairs, as they’re intended. Anyway, still love these dramas.

I also binged-watched Trauma Code… and it was fine. (Sorry! Can we still be friends?) And JJH was cool. Anus and Gangsta fun! I think medical dramas are just not my thing. I ffw'd all the operation scenes...so half the drama?

But I have drunk the k-Kool-Aid. If it had been Tom Cruise zipping thru the war zone on a motorcycle, I probably would have dropped it at the over-the-top opening scene. But JJH? 🥰 (I may make an exception to the k-Kool-Aid for the Buffy sequel.)

And we are continuing with the jdrama The Hot Spot as a family watch. I like the setting, pacing and vibe. It’s one of those the Seinfeld type shows: slice of life blown up to epic proportions...but with an alien. 🙃

And I just love the ladies. I could listen to them prattle on for ages. A halved avocado does have the perfect spot to nestle an egg… Spot on! The alien was a little off-putting in episode 1. Tho to the kids he was exactly what an alien who was also the grumpy Uncle next door would be like. (Is this what they think of grownups?). But into Episode 1.5, he seems to tone down and fit in with the gang and solve mighty world problems….LOL. Can’t wait to see how the Great Volleyball Escapade pans out.

I also binged The Trauma Code for 2 days and, while it was very addicting in my case, I would rate it as 8/10. It was fun and all that, but it didn’t leave any great impact on me the same way Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim or Hospital Playlist did. Not sure if it’s because of the me effect or the drama itself isn’t up to par with the two mentioned.

It was fun and I look forward to the next season, if there is, though.

So I will also watch S2. I read somewhere that they've material till S3. And it's doing gangbusters on Netflix, where it's now beaten Squid Games S2. So I'm sure Netflix would be more than happy as well.

Of course, looking at SG2, as the saying going, past performance is no guarantee of...

LIVE WATCHES
Newtopia
Between Trauma Code, Study Group, and this one, 2025 has started off with three amazing dramas that all look and behave like comic books/webtoons rather than feeling "transferred" from that medium. I quite like the effect, and it might end up being how one recognizes dramas from around this time period, in retrospect.

Study Group
I put off work to watch new episodes. I hope someone helps Ga-min see that he's going off the rails because he's lost capacity to use his own wonderful moral compass.

Love Scout
It's fine. I think I might wait until next week to watch the last two episodes together as god intended.

When Stars Gossip
It remains completely itself, which is completely outrageous, and I still think it important to wait until the end to figure out if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Rented in Finland
It's over!! How many times could we watch these four guys figure out how to cook Korean food (with condiments they brought from home) in Finnish outdoor kitchens? A bunch too many.

Check In Hanyang
Wasn't this show about a Joseon variety show where the stars were competing for spots on King the Land? I could not believe my eyes in episodes 13-14. Not only did it turn dark in theme, it turned super dark in action--I'm getting HeartBeat bad ending vibes. Y'all, Jun-hwa's totally dying at the end of this thing.

FROM THE RESERVES
XX
Great, short, relatively meaningful story about two women, and some men too. Amazing cast in which Ahn hee-yeon shines the brightest and Lee Jong-won and Bae In-hyuk have a Spies Who Loved Me reunion.

ON DECK
From Now on, Showtime!
Hoping for light, old-school, ghost-forward, cases-of-the-week!

Yeah Jun-hwa's TOTALLY dying; going out in a blaze of suddenly noble (or regretful?) glory, probably. The viciousness was a shock, and kind of made me go, "ah that's why he took the role" - He's such an underrated (good) actor! I wish he could be a ML.

AHHHH!!!! From Now On, Showtime! is one of my favorite fantasy dramas! I had to FF through the darkest murdery things, but the ghosts were lovely, the ML is a grumpy, arrogant, hilarious stork (his forte) who thaws out most satisfactorily, the FL is awesome, and it's on my list of BEST ENDINGS EVER.

Happy Saturday, Beanies! Little warning – I have time and energy-draining irl stuff to do next weekend, so may be late for WWWW or even skip it altogether.

KILL MY SINS: This drama starts sinfully meh (har!). Confusing, pretentious plot: big revenge mystery with multiple players and dubious motives/loyalties, but we get little to no clues and just go through motions until characters literally start info dump in great detail feat flashbacks, all while smirking proudly at their own smartassery. I'm used to mustache-twirling baddies in historicals, but here EVERYONE does it, why?! Characters themselves are not that engaging either, bordering on faux-deep. Acting is cartoonishly overdramatic – leads and big bad (?) are passable, but even they are heavily “posing” instead of “living” their roles, while supporting cast is mostly just bad. Lead actors do have chemistry, but it makes little sense plot-wise and apparently goes nowhere considering lack of romance tag... Action scenes suck (let's not talk about that horse riding one, pls), dubbing is atrocious (been a while since I saw a lipsync this off), visuals are... pretty good – budget is there, costumes pretty, wigs good, camerawork/colors pleasing etc... But plenty of desktop wallpaper material alone doesn't make a solid show.

LOVE OF THE DIVINE TREE: I'm rather pleased to see that TTEOTM's cultural reset of xianxia demonic fashion continues to thrive))) They didn't have to go as far as making their own discount TTJ tho Far less convoluted plot-wise than the show above and even with some sprinkles of fine humor (heavens opposing MLs scheme was hilarious), but also nothing fresh or particularly interesting (yet?) either. CGI is uneven, action scenes in Ep1 were bad but improved greatly later thanks to ML's skill with wires. FL is hella undercooked – both character and actress. Previous life version is better, but since we can't spend the whole drama in flashback... ML tries his best, but I'm not sure first-timer in headlining the drama could carry the entire thing on his abstractly painted by tropey xianxia curse shoulders. Also, are these few barely-there lines on his face and torso considered horribly fugly disfigurement everyone runs away screaming from? Lmao, he should make a trip to MOON LOVERS universe, Hae Soo will fix it for him in no time!

Genuinely idk what to do with both shows – give them few episodes more or just drop and move on? Rewatched good chunk of AJTL as well and had significantly better time with it than both ongoings combined.

THE REBEL PRINCESS: Still too tired for it.

“Drama news” segment:

- dramas aired already: iQiyi's BACK FOR YOU (Angelababy, Wang Anyu, Republican action mystery) on February 4th, Tencent's LIES NEVER LIE (Wang Zhener,Li Yuan, Wang Bowen, Liu Lincheng, crime mystery) and MangoTV's COME ON DAD (Chen Minghao, Zhu Tao, fantasy comedy ala FREAKY FRIDAY but with dudes) on February 5th, iQiyi's LOVE OF THE DIVINE TREE (Deng Wei, Xiang Hanzhi, xianxia romance) and Youku's KILL MY SINS (Liu Shishi, Dou Xiao, Tang dynasty mystery) on February 7th.

- dramas rumored to air: none.

- dramas confirmed to air: bunch of minis and that's it.
dramas that just got licensed: none?

- dramas announced: MangoTV's YOU ARE MY FATEFUL LOVE (Wei Zheming, Zhenghe Huizi, modern romance) started filming, Tencent's SI JIN (Jing Tian, Zhang Wanyi, historical romance) – confusingly seems like this show's already finished/licensed and readying for premiere but only made a proper introduction now.

- casting rumors: MangoTV's YA XI (Lu Yuxiao, Chen Xingxu, romance melo), Youku's LOVE TRAVELS THROUGH TIME (Liu Xueyi, Yang Yutong, xianxia romance) – at least this new potential FL is not a minor, iQiyi's LIU YI SHENG FAN xIANG JI/THE FLYING DOCTORS (Xiao Zhan, medical drama), XING ZHI WAN (Wang Xingyue, Zhao Qing, historical romance, platform unknown), Tencent's BE MY UNIVERSE (Dilraba Dilmurat, Li Xian, xianxia romance), iQiyi's BORN TO BE ALIVE (Yang Zi, Huang Jingyu, Tibet-setting melodrama?), MangoTV's LIANG CHEN MEI JIN/DISPLAYING BEAUTIFUL BROCADE (Ci Sha, Ren Min, Chang Huasen, historical rebirth romance), Tencent's LONG GU FEN XIANG (Jing Tian, Zhang Binbin, romance suspense), Tencent's SPRING BANQUET (Ding Yuxi, Yang Chaoyue, historical court intrigue romance) - omg, pls save him from having to carry her drama again! and neither fit the roles btw, iQiyi's hot potato CHEATING MEN MUST DIE (Dilraba Dilmurat, Ao Ruipeng, Yan An, Quan Yilun, historical revenge anti-romance) - well, this male cast sounds more realistic than A-listers drama hilariously hoped to get before.

- dramas wrapped: Tencent's LOVE BEYOND THE GRAVE (Dilraba Dilmurat, Chen Feiyu, xianxia romance), Youku's PULL STRINGS (Ao Ruipeng, Sun Zhenni, fantasy wuxia).

- iQiyi's LAMENT OF THE RIVER IMMORTAL (Bai Lu, Zeng Shunxi, xianxia romance) changed working title to FEUD – will never understand this cdramas urge to go for the most basic and lame option possible.

- say bye-bye to unhinged mini-dramas – the format just got hit with more censorship regulations, with multiple tiers of strictness depending on budget and how much platform plans to promote the project. Ouch. Here goes c-ent's hope to make a fortune with such shows...

Thanks @gikata.
In the world of cdrama crime, through four episodes thumbs up for iQIYI’s BACK FOR YOU. It is a shame it was shelved for so long.
Started Tencent’s THE EMBERS (28 eps.) with episode one available subbed on Youtube. I liked what I saw. I enjoyed ML Wang Zi Qi last year in Youku’s THE FIRST SHOT (with Johnny Huang) and some may remember him as ML back in 2021 in Tencent’s THE IMPERIAL CORONER.
Tencent Video has to be one of the worst outfits in revealing what is ‘Coming Soon’. I have a feeling that LIES NEVER LIE will not be made available subbed to US viewers. LNL started airing on Feb. 5 and it does not come up on a search at Tencent Video. (Same thing happened to SMALL POLICE STATION.
I am still waiting for news that THE GOLDEN HAIRPIN has received a license to broadcast.
I have added another Zhang (besides Zhang Ruo Yun) to my list of favorite cdrama MLs: Zhang Yi. I am just wrapping up his excellent 2022 crime/mystery Youku’s BE REBORN (26 eps.). He is going to keep me busy because both of his well regarded 2023 crime dramas: iQIYI’s THE KNOCKOUT and Youku’s WHO IS HE (Viki US) are available to me.

I have a feeling that Tencent got their February plans messed up once again - there is no expected blockbuster drama or even significant costume one in the schedule they dropped for this month, which is hella weird, given how desirable this seasonal timeslot is. Maybe it's a heavens' sign to dust off their deepest shelves once again, huh? Let's see if they'll get the memo.

THE GOLDEN HAIRPIN gets rumors of air-drop every few days now, but to no avail yet. Perhaps this is their monthly flagship drama that still struggles to get released somehow? Nothing in their - or other platforms - lineup for the next few weeks excites me, sadly. So, unless a miracle happens, I'll probably just stick to completing my "in process" list.

My "wanna watch" Iqiyi list is now over two dozen...

2

@cliosservant1846 Yuning promised to notify fans when he's gonna do dubbing for Part2, so if it ever airs, we will be warned beforehand)))

3

Dubbing dramas made "today" now makes a drama suspect for me.

Honestly? I think the trend is away from dubbing leads because their own voices are recognizable to the audience. Think Dylan Wang. He doesn't have a great voice but it makes zero difference in DAFENG.

2

@cliosservant1846 honestly? I'm 90% sure the whole c-gov's latest anti-dubbing agenda is mainly because they want to further enforce celebs speaking perfect Mandarin. Perhaps there are other reasons, but something tells me that making viewers more happy by hearing their faves real voices is not very high on that priority list...

For the record, Dylan's self-dubbing WAS somewhat an issue for domestic audience - not only because of accent, but not-clear-enough diction as well. Ofc, that's never gonna improve unless he keeps doing his own lines, so pick your poison: either let actors train and evolve, which takes time, or don't complain when they use dubbers.

Back to EB2, it still not being dubbed is not a worrying sign in the slightest - Part1 also did the dubbing literally DAYS before drama went on air, this is a common practice. Due to circumstances (pandemic lockdowns) it was being filmed in, no way makers could record clear enough audio on set even if they wanted to.

The short answer is yes. I would definitely recommend it. Jump aboard.Think of it as a marathon however. All of the trilogy is not available in English I believe.
I have read the four volumes that make up Book I: “The Legend of the Condor Heroes”:
Part 1: “A Hero Born” (2018)
Part 2: “A Bond Undone” (2019)
Part 3: “A Snake Lies Waiting” (2020)
Part 4: “A Heart Divided” (2021)
I believe the plan is to translate the trilogy in 12 volumes.

The fifth volume (Part 1 of Book 2) is available now and I have it but I haven’t read it yet.
Book 2: “Return of the Condor Heroes”:
Part 1: “A Past Unearthed” (2024).
Here is some background:

I have never attempted watching a television adaptation of LEGENDS but Viki has the 50 episode 2008 version available and iQIYI has the 52 episode 2017 version
available.

MissVictrix, you said it all for me this week re: LOVE SCOUT. It's a winning kdrama with such likable, capable leads that at episode 9, I'm just praying they don't spoil the triumph.

An outsider opinion again this week, but I'm impressed with WHEN THE STARS GOSSIP. My happy watch of the week goes to the screenwriter who wrote the dialog in episode 10, time stamp 48:50. In a moment of sad self-reflection our "opportunist" space tourist and OB-GYN Kong Ryong describes himself, "I think I'm nothing more than a speck of cosmic dust, a selfish, petty and jealous speck of dust." The clarity of this dialog was touching, and a mature Lee Minh Ho delivers beautifully. Despite all the trashing of this space drama, it's rare to see a show improve along the way. This drama has done just that.

February is re-watch month (likely March too). I began the week attempting to re-watch GUARDIANS OF THE DAFENG based on glowing WWW comments, and it just didn't catch on for me although the comedy is obvious (and this week in America, comedy is life's blood). So, FF through another Dylan Wang cdrama ONLY FOR LOVE (2023) with Bai Lu. This casting mismatch was an obvious miss.

On to my first re-watch, FOREVER AND EVER (2021), the rare drama where I do not skip the captivating opening credits. I remain awestruck at this beautifully rendered cdrama. It just proves that when you have the magic, and Ren Jia Lun paired with Bai Lu have the magic, it's kismet. I wish I wrote this drama because this story is a meditation on how each of us has history. It's provocative, audacious storytelling.

Next up, a re-watch of JOY OF LIFE (2019) and then I reward myself with JOL2 (2024), praise be!

I love Forever and Ever — yes, for the acting and the story, but also for the rare case that it’s a drama that also does it right with the nuances of the relationship dynamics, too. It’s a modern drama that does the “Old Money” story really well. For once we get an “Old Money” take without it being a period drama or a Republican Era drama and it’s done well 🤌🏻🤌🏻

Meant ONE AND ONLY

1

ONE AND ONLY is the drama that really got me into not hating unhappy and “bad” endings, as long as it made sense in the writing and for the characters—-in which case, this one made perfect sense.

Not sure if you’ve seen this before: An interview — 13 minutes long!! 😍— of Bai Lu and Ren Jia Lun (Allen Ren) when they were filming ONE AND ONLY. Apparently, they’d actually filmed FOREVER AND EVER first, but aired ONE AND ONLY first.
One of my favorite interviews ever of any drama 😊

@nessa

Wow! Thanks for sharing that interview! I'll watch it.
I didn't know Forever and ever was shot before One and Only.
Interesting.
Something I regret about One and Only is that the main leads are dubbed, while in Forever and Ever we hear their real voices.

1

@isagc
ONE AND ONLY & FOREVER AND EVER were the drama that made me like these 2 as an actress and as an actor, and this is the interview that made me a fan of the both of them as people 😊

1

What an interesting interview! Some really good questions! Thank you!

Dropped Love Scout at episode 10. All the elements just started to feel too forced. But it's incredibly rare for me to watch a romance all the way through - it has only ever happened a handful of times since I started watching k-drama - so I'm not really the target audience here.

Not live-watching any k-drama at the moment, but have been re-watching Alchemy of Souls. I had forgotten how much I love some of the secondary characters - Hemp Master Lee and his chaste herb tea, the Crown Prince (such an entertaining mixture of vanity and insight).

Watched the first two episodes of Kill My Sins, and found it entertainingly cheesy, even though the dubbing is appalling, and the writing/editing is a total mess. So far the FL seems to be carrying the plot single-handed.

Please, would be interested in hearing which of the "incredibly rare" romances you've made it all the way through?

I do finish a lot of series where the romance is a part of the plot, but does not dominate.

Actually, thinking about it, Encounter and No Gain No Love are probably the only "pure" romances I watched right through. The other romances I enjoyed have a lot of melodrama elements: The One and Only, Perfect Marriage Revenge and Marry My Husband.

Blossom: This was engaging enough to keep me watching, but it never had that magic special something that lifts a show to the next level. I didn't buy a lot of the character choices, and the rather pedestrian acting across the board wasn't helping. It's fine, but I've seen similar stories done in much more compelling ways in other shows.

Study Group: As someone who spent years teaching in "challenging" schools, I can definititively state that this is completely unmoored from reality, as is the idea that you can stop school violence with "more and better violence". That being said, it is entertaining watching our sweet, bespectacled lead plow through the bad guys and I can fully get behind the idea on not giving up on even the most difficult kids. Not sure where this will ultimately end up and I can see it going in directions that will make me want to do my own ninja moves on some folks but I'll stick with it for now.

I'm stalled on Blossom for the reasons you mention. With a better cast (or at least a stronger FL), this could have been so much more vibrant. But it really shows the brilliance of this director in bringing out the best in what (and who) he's given to work with. I'm very excited for his next drama, which has a far stronger cast!

Yes, the directing was definitely the strongest element. Yet even though (stage) directing is a major part of what I do for a living, I find that screenwriting and acting are what tend to make or break shows for me. No matter how effective the framing, shot selection or editing are, they usually can't cover over weakness in the other areas.

I agree the FL in Blossom could have been better played by other actresses with a stronger presence, but as I don't know the source material, I can't say if the director chose this actress because she was exactly as the novel described the character.

I really like the ML, though 🤩

The ML is LOVELY!! 😍 I've liked him in everything I've seen him in, so I'm happy he finally got a ML role. Hopefully more ML roles will be coming up soon for him.

I think he is the ML now in Reopen my Journals. I want to give it a try.

In Blossom he looks so handsome and his character is so cool that I can't understand how the FL can be so cold sometimes when he is around 😅

1

Lol Isa, my thoughts exactly 😂 Her standoffish-ness was completely unrealistic!! He looks SO GOOD and he's nice and competent.... I think I'm convincing myself to go back and finish just to appreciate him more 😉

1

Currently less than half-way through the 500+ chapter novel. The only through going description of the FL concerns her eyebrows that "stretch to her hairline" and the fact that she is very pretty.
To me it is a fascinating lesson about the difficulty in adapting a densely written, incredibly detailed book into a visual art form. There are entire subplots I wish I could FF through!

"as is the idea that you can stop school violence with "more and better violence"."

I'm actually expecting the show to do something different. I feel like there's hope here since our sweet teacher is determined to change the school.
I doubt she'll change a lot by the end, but maybe we will see the beginning of change. Like the director and/or other teachers getting more involved, and sending the psycho kid to jail (well, more like getting him expelled), etc.

This drama has shown all the people involved in the school, not only the kids. So if this ends up being another Weak Hero or Boyhood I'm gonna be annoyed, tbh.

If "violence is the only answer" type of shows become the trend for school dramas I'm going to be very disappointed.

I totally agree. Teacher Lee's character and strategies are what are keeping me watching the show right now, and in my "boots on the ground" experience, shifting the culture of classrooms and institutions through an empathetic community and relationship-based approach isn't pie-in-the-sky idealism - it's the only way real, lasting change happens.

Blossom is probably the second or third c-drama I’ve attempted. (I think the only one I ever finished was The Romance of Tiger and Rose.) I went all the way till their marriage and pretty much abandoned from there as there was nothing of much interest to continue. (Palace politics is so boring!) I am now watching Everlasting Longing, which is I’d say is worse but all the interesting talk about the merchant trade and the surprisingly good acting of Angelababy continues to pique my interest.

If you want to attempt another period but don’t want such complicated and boring politics, I’d absolutely recommend the above mentioned—by many Beanies— the Cdrama, ONE AND ONLY.
It is still a period drama and it does surround the royal family and a family of influence, but it really isn’t heavy or complicated on the politics. It comes and goes, and whatever politics that does come into play of the story, it’s very simple and not head-scratching and is actually significant to the overall plot 😊

I haven't watched episode 9 of Love Scout yet. Planning to watch tonight with ep 10, so I'll save my comments for next week. Thanks to Beanie comments I'm expecting good things 💘

I DID watch the penultimate week of Check In Hanyang and found the swift change in tone exciting. For better or worse, this shift was telegraphed from episode 1. However, the ending is pretty clear now, so the last 2 eps are just about how we get there. I'm hoping the final showdown doesn't go soft. There's still room in the story for our fab 4 to pull it back together.

And thanks to @hopefulromantic, my mistake over where The Trauma Code was streaming was corrected. I'm 5 eps in. Do I love it more for Ju Ji Hoon or just the fact that it's so different in style and tone than everything else I've been watching so far this year? Idk, but it's just what I needed right now. Plus, I've never not liked Kim Sun Young in any role 🙃

Finally, I finished c-drama MOONLIGHT MYSTIQUE after almost dropping it. It was uneven across the board, but when it was good, it was dang good. I particularly liked how the story's core mystery came together at the end. Also, it takes the award for the most full body hugs in a single drama, lol, not complaining. And it features one of the coolest OSTs I've ever heard ("Flowers Fall With No Trace"), even though they overused it. Worth a watch if you love OTT xianxias (and the 4 main leads).

Have a great week beanies! I'll be hanging out in my rooftop apartment 😉

Re: Check in Hanyang - YES absolutely agree; the change in tone was foreshadowed right from week one, so while it felt like a little bit of a shock, it was no surprise.

Woohoo for Trauma Code!!! It is so very much not what I usually watch, but I loved the whole thing, including the absolutely thrilling pace and vibe. Hope you enjoy the end!!!

Moonlight Mystique is on my list, but I'll have to subscribe to watch 😭 Comparing first six episodes (since they went head-to-head), I like The Blossoming Love better. But I do love a good OTT xianxia, so I'll watch for sure 👌

I'm liking Blossoming Love better too, but MM has a strong finish. All the various parts of the story really do come together well. I still have 10 eps to go with TBL, which has done an impressive job with the budget they had. The SML character is really different and I'm liking the actor.

I actually stopped my subscription right after I finished MM because it looks like I'm going to need a Kocowa subscription for Undercover High School, which I really want to watch on my TV, not my computer. If you signed up for iQ originally via the Apple store, and it's still showing in your inactive subscriptions list, you can actually click on "See All Plans" and you'll get a list of all the various purchase options, including all the sale prices they've offered. It's a little confusing, but worth it to get the best price.

I like my C-dramas with a hefty side of spoilers, so I read up on these as they were airing, and I'm looking forward to the MM ending. But I'm so impressed with the FL in TBL!! She's so vibrant and dynamic and alive in her role. The SML in TBL is SO good and interesting. I can't believe he hasn't had ML roles. He's literally the only reason I finished the Netflix movie The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity.

I don't know why, but I'm not very interested in starting Moonlight Mystique yet.

Oh yay! It’s been a while since someone sort of mentioning and love has been given to a Vin Zhang Bin Bin drama (the ML of THE BLOSSOMING LOVE). Now that he’s not a part of a big agency and is just a one-man agency— his own, Zhang Bin Bin Studio— I hope he has more choice to pick his own projects and can build his name back up with better projects where he can really excel 😊 Because he’s not a bad actor by any means, imho— I’ve liked him in all that I’ve seen him in

He’s actually really talented! I’ve seen him in a range of different dramas portraying a range of different characters. I loved him in the Chinese remake of Korea’s She Was Pretty — titled, Pretty Li Hui Zhen — as the Chinese equivalent of Choi Si Won’s character in the Korean original, and all of his other more broody and dark characters are just 🤌🏻

And Trauma Code was a blast.
I prefer this over dramas which are not set in hospitals but suddenly one of the main characters gets very ill (terminal ill, usually).

I watched the first episodes of the new Weekender FOR EAGLE BROTHERS. Tragedy has already struck for our FL and each of her four new brothers-in-law has his own problem. A ‘band of brothers’ ultimately pulling together was a theme of this same writer’s THE GENTLEMEN OF THE WOLGYESU TAILOR SHOP and she has clearly returned with that theme here but the ML is not one of those brothers- he is a widower with a pair of really nice grown children to add to the mix. The third family is from a rival brewery with an apparently past unfortunate connection to the Eagle Brewery (of Makeolli) at the center of the story. The next two episodes should reveal more of the beginnings of our story.

My wife has watched all available episodes of the new Chinese Costume drama EVERLASTING LONGING, a reasonably entertaining show that does not take itself too seriously. On Netflix she has also been watching PERFECT MATCH, another Chinese Costume drama that is watchable but will also not be listed among the all-time greats.

She has also been enjoying the Japanese detective drama GALILEO on Netflix. She is looking forward to watching another Japanese show INHERITANCE DETECTIVE and we are both looking forward to the original live action NODAME CANTABILE which will start on Netflix on Monday: This classic story has been retold by other countries (My family very much enjoyed the recent Chinese version SYMPHONY’S ROMANCE) but to many people none of the remakes can quite capture the magic of the original adaptation of what was a best-selling Manga (which was inspired by a real person).

Speaking of Japanese drama Viki now has the first of the Mischievous Kiss movies, the newest Japanese re-make of the classic Itazurra Na Kissu story. This time the story has been done as three movies, of which the first, now available on Viki, is MISCHIEVOUS KISS: HIGH SCHOOL. It was reasonably entertaining but not even close to the equal of the live action drama MISCHIEVOUS KISS: LOVE IN TOKYO which was done only three years earlier (in 2013), nor the Taiwanese, Thai, Chinese and Korean versions of Tada Kaoru’s immortal story. {Note: The single most complete version of the story is actually the anime ITAKISS which carries the story all the way through to its intended ending with the birth of the OTP’s first child). A great many elements had to be stripped out in order to reduce the story down to three movies and much of the flavor of the original story has been lost with it. The leads in the first movie simply cannot have the same chemistry that Honoka Miki and Yuki Furukawa had in “Love in Tokyo” for the simple reason that many of the interactions between their characters have been stripped away.

I just got the news that Netflix will be releasing the IU and Park Bo-gum drama WHEN LIFE HANDS YOU TANGERINES over four weeks, four episodes per week, in March.
