[K-drama Treasure Hunt] Stuck on an overnight trip together

Welcome to the K-drama treasure hunt, where we all go looking for K-drama treasure in the form of tiny drama details that we know and love. Sometimes these details take the shape of well-worn tropes (oppa Band-Aiding) or storytelling devices (Top Secret Deadly Allergy), but other times it’s just details we know we’ve seen in other dramas, but need help putting all the clues together.

Each week we’ll put you on the hunt for a piece of K-drama treasure, and you can report your findings in the comments.

There’s no umpire in this game, so if you find the detail we’re looking for, drop the drama title (or even better, drama title + episode number) in the comments, and we’ll all take your word for it. Or, we’ll go binge watch just to see it play out.

And remember, we’re here to map our way to the treasures not to the plot twists! We know how exciting it can be to have all the hard-earned details stashed in your head, but let’s try to keep the spoilers out of the comments.

This week’s treasure:

Stuck on an overnight trip together

Your mission:

Locate all those instances of budding romance where the leads find themselves with no choice but to stay overnight together. Maybe they’ve broken down in the middle of the woods or maybe (probably) they’ve missed the last ferry home. In any case, they’ll need accommodations for the night, and the lone place they come across will certainly only have one room. What’s a pair of good-looking people to do but share?

Thanks @aicaramba for this treasure hunt idea!

Reference drama:

King the Land (Episode 3)

You should always be wary of the tides at Mont St-Michel!

This trope might be in every romance drama. I love it! 🥳

I remember DR SLUMP, where FL went to the countryside for a job interview, and for reasons ML followed her there and they end up exploring the area and having to sleep over, too. While they don’t technically share one room, FL stays with him until he falls asleep. *aaaaaaws* It might also be on that same trip they fall asleep together in a restaurant of all places. (Might count as one room.)

Currently watching RUN ON, where the main couple go on a trip to - you guessed it - the countryside, to seek out an old acquaintance. FL accidentally gets super drunk and falls asleep in the car, only to awake in the morning to see ML slept next to her.

This scene is also in BUSINESS PROPOSAL, where the leads run into old acquaintances of FL on a business trip (this time to the seaside!). ML somehow ends up pretending to be her boyfriend, which in turn leads to staying at a hotel in the same room together to keep up the charade.

Business Proposal might be my favorite use of that trope because of the way the comedic hijinks with the FL's frenemies moved the romance forward, as opposed to just the forced hotel room proximity.

Coffee Prince: They are not accidentally stuck overnight, but the whole coffee shop crew go on an overnight "retreat" together organized by Mr. Hong that turns out to be at an apple orchard where they have to work picking apples. While the crew is not happy at first having to work, the whole experience leads to a change in attitude by Han Gyul about the cafe and bonding by not only the main couple, but also, all the coffee princes--the friendship (which is in fact facilitated by the fact that all of them, except Mr. Hong, think Eun Chan is a guy and treats her as one of the guys leading better bonding) being one of the charms of the show in addition to the romance. It is also a turning point for the cafe because of the viral video from the orchard that Eun Chan's sister posts.

Before We Get Married: The accidental overnight at the visit to the investor leads to . . . or almost. A key scene to their relationship and the drama.

Yes, I love the orchard night out in Coffee Prince - full of youth and energy.

I enjoy that kind of situations.

Off the top of my head:

_ The Tale of Lady Ok.
_ Flower Boy Next Door.
_ Shopping King Louis.
_ Live up to your name.
_ Rookie Historian.
_ Secret Romantic Guesthouse.
_ Abyss.
_ Racket Boys.
_ Love song for illusion.

Age of Youth 2 Ep1
Okay - so it's not romantic leads, but a crew of innocent women who wander into a vacation home with an evil axe serial killer dude. Hilarity ensues.
Crash Landing on You
do I need to explain this one? It's practically the entire first half premise

I was thinking about this one. You're right that it's most of the show. Whether they're in North or South Korea one of them is far from home. But for some reason it made me think of the episode on the train -- or outside of the train, I guess. I loved that one. I think about it a lot!

so, so many involving storms and freezing weather...but there's a pleasant camping trip in Becoming a Billionaire and a Gilligan's Island scenario in Haeundae Lovers.

LOL I think I’d only ever re-watched it once or twice after my initial watch. Since then, I’ve only watched bits and pieces of it once in a blue moon whenever I was feeling nostalgic

Can't remember the series but two episodes that come to mind are one where they get lost and end up staying in a pension in the middle of nowhere, and the pension owner turns out to be a serial killer who is robbing the pension. (Maybe welcome to Waikiki or something equally farcial).

The second one is where the main character is perhaps on his way to military service, his girlfriend takes him down, he gets absolutely hammered and shits himself.

The first one you mentioned could be Age of Youth 2. The group of friends go through a similar situation.

I'd go back to the drama in another era - My Girl, when Gong Chan (Lee Dong-wook) and Yoo-rin (Lee Da-Hae) stuck in a village having to put on ajumma pants singing, dancing and drinking makgeolli. A snowy fun night with budding romance. It also became a standard routine for future romances.

King the Land had our OTP conned into spending an overnight trip together.

While technically the ML lived on the island and the OTP didn't go in a trip, the FL missed the last ferry back and spent the night on the island stuck together with the ML and his nibling twins at their home in Marry YOU. Of course the OTP had an intensely intimate conversation under the moonlit sky.

Her Private Life had *the* most perfect example of this, when they were stranded in the photographer's friend's home... It wasn't that contrived, and managed to give us that totally squee-worthy, breathless moment with Kim Jae Wook untangling Park Young Min's hair...

That's the most exquisitely filmed romantic k-drama moment I can think of (it's come a long way from frozen kisses).

I loooooove this trope!! Some of the recent ones I remember are from Lovely Runner (surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet) when they went to the seaside and had to stay the night *with a really lovely confession thrown in,* Brewing Love (stay overnight at the top of the mountain in ep. 3), does Bossam: Steal the Fate count?, Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale (it happens as part of a dare, essentially, and the reality does not match up to the fantasy 😂), and *I think* The Legend of the Blue Sea would count, too.

Business proposal and Her private life are already mentioned.
One that comes to mind, despite my low appreciation of the drama, is Cafe Minamdang. They are standed on an island, and have to borrow adjumas clothes. Seo In Guk pulls up the sexy, even in a pink florally tracksuit.

The Undateables – when the leads were stranded in a country house because the ML’s car keys were buried in a sack of potato seeds. If I remember correctly, he did it on purpose to extend their stay overnight. Though they didn’t share a room, the house was small enough to make it feel like they did.
