News bites: January 2, 2025

  • 2025 has arrived and MBC’s Motel California is getting ready for their doors open with new character posters showcasing Lee Se-young (What Comes After Love), Na In-woo (Marry My Husband), and Choi Min-soo (Numbers), as well as Kim Tae-hyung (Bait) and Choi Hee-jin (The Impossible Heir). In just one more week, the romance will be airing on weekends, following When the Phone Rings on January 10. [MBC]

  • Kang Hanna (Frankly Speaking) is in the final talks for tvN’s new fantasy rom-com The Tyrant’s Chef, potentially joining Yoon-ah (King the Land) and Park Sung-hoon (Squid Game 2) in the cast. Production for the timeslip and webtoon adaptation has PD Jang Tae-yoo (Knight Flower) at the helm with scripts by HapJak. [Newsen]
  • TVING briefly released their first poster for their upcoming fictional sageuk The Scandal of Chunhwa (previously translated as The Love Story of Choon-hwa). But there must have been some kind of error as the post has since been taken down, so let’s ignore the listed February date in case it’s incorrect and just enjoy all the pretty with Go Ara (Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol) and Jang Ryul (Daily Dose of Sunshine) as our leads. [Single List]

  • Netflix dropped a special poster for Squid Game 3, introducing the iconic doll Young-hee’s new partner-in-crime: Chul-soo. With both writing and directing remaining in the hands of series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, the new season will also continue with our large, large cast – led by Lee Jung-jae. Picking up from where we were left hanging in the story at the end of Season 2, the third installment will be launching later this year. [MBC]
  • In the meantime, Cha Joo-young (The Real Has Come) and Lee Hyun-wook (Song of the Bandits) begin their procession towards the Joseon throne, standing up against the formidable Lee Sung-min (A Bloody Lucky Day) in the latest teaser for The Queen Who Crowns. tvN’s sageuk will soon be on our screens in just a few days, premiering on January 6 in the Monday-Tuesday slot. [Osen]
  • More stills have come out on KBS for the new weekender Please Take Care of the Five Eagle Brothers, featuring Eom Ji-won (The Trunk) and Ahn Jae-wook (Not Others) along with our title’s five brothers. Taking over the weekend slot after Iron Family concludes its run, the family drama is expected to begin its story in February. [KBS, Sports Donga]

Motel California, and The Tyrant’s chef are on the list. Loving the screenwriters name, I am guessing they wrote the webtoon..

It is an interesting name. I did try searching when writing the news post, but the webtoon writer is listed as "Park Gook-jae" so I'm not sure if it's the same person using a pen name or if it's someone else.

I read today that The Tyrant's Chef has been put on hold because of Park Sung-hoon's scandal.

The script reading was supposed to take place this week, but it was postponed, citing the national mourning period as the official reason... 🤔

No. 1. MBC’s MOTEL CALIFORNIA (12 eps) is now on Viki US’s “Coming Soon” list. I will be there for Choi Min-soo.

A concern. I know very little about MC because for me CMS was enough of a draw for me to want to watch. I haven’t watched any trailers. However, after reading the MDL sysnopsis it seems Lee Se-young’s character was treated like crap as a child by some residents of the rural village where the motel is located. I have no reason to believe 20 years later these folks have changed. So I may pull the ripcord early if we will be confonted with village residents from hell like in SUMMER STRIKE and to a certain extent recently in FAMILY BY CHOICE (I am looking at you Madam!).

I am always wary of going-back-to-your-small-town dramas, and usually wait to see some feedback before I watch them these days. When I have to go back to the town I grew up in, I generally go out of my way to avoid anyone I used to know, so all the awkward or painful situations the characters get into are super uncomfortable to watch.
