Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (December 7, 2024)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

missvictrix

When the Phone Rings: What does one do when the show that you’re currently obsessed with is premepted for news coverage? Why, rewatch last week’s episodes and a) enjoy your favorite scenes again; b) spend far too much time calculating how often Yoo Yeon-seok’s left hand with his wedding ring actually manages to be in frame. No joke, I began to wonder if he’s a lefty (but he doesn’t seem to be — sadness), so it seems like this is an intentional directorial move. And I heartily approve.

Unit

Currently covering: Brewing Love, Love Your Enemy

When the Phone Rings: For someone who prefers text messages to phone calls, this ringing phone has me on a chokehold! Honestly, I can’t tell what’s more crack-tastic about this show:
– Smexy Yoo Yeon-seok rocking the suits (and that ring!) and the slo-mo strides like he stepped out of a romance novel.
– Chae Soo-bin (rise, my girl, rise!!) absolutely crushing it as the vulnerable but definitely not weak Hong Hee-joo.
– Sa-eon and Hee-joo’s electrically charged scenes and how they jointly take up the majority of screen time.
– My fascination with their communication problems being integral to the plot rather than serving as a mere source of conflict.
– The way the episodes cliff with a plot twist/new revelation as the ending OST swells in the background. Glorious! Simply glorious!
To think that I’ll be ending this year with the absolute banger that is When the Phone Rings. Maybe the dramagods double as my secret Santa after all.

Currently covering: Parole Examiner Lee

Beyond Evil: I’ve had this show on my watch list for a while and I have to say, now that I’m almost halfway through, I’m not disappointed. I’ve seen Yeo Jin-gu in a few dramas and I like his very dour portrayal of Han Joo-won. And Shin Ha-kyun is just brilliant as Lee Dong-shik. It’s safe to say that I have suspected every character (of being the serial killer) throughout this show, and I’m enjoying not knowing how things will turn out.

ONGOING
Brewing Love - Too many stories came out of nowhere this week. I did like that he sweetly made her home warmer and full of memories. Using his senses to catch the delivery guy was kinda cool too.

Face Me - No surprises at all in Lee Yi-kyung being the intruder. Maybe there'll be a nice plot twist on the reasons behind it? One can only hope.

The Fiery Priest S2 (up to Ep. 9) - Significant plot progress in Eps. 7-8 with the bomb and gas tank plot. Then we got a whole lot of nothing in Ep. 9 but we ended on Shaman Oppa (Kyung-sun) and Unnie (Hae-il) so I'm still watching...

Marry You - Can't believe we passed over the dead fiancée so quickly. And then we got the SFL's crazy machinations against the kids. Where did my sweet comedy go?

When the Phone Rings - The bedroom scene was SO typical but somehow still funny. Some of the other actors are really putting the M in makjang with their acting though.

Love on a Single Log Bridge - They gave the FL the sob story of the century but the adult version is still written as too unlikeable. At least the ML is moderately funny. But I yearn for the past scenes and that's not something I'd expect in a Ju Ji-hoon show.

STARTED (not really!)
Didn't start any of the weekend shows that were originally on my watchlist 😅. Will try out Light Shop over the weekend.

C-DRAMAS
3 episodes into See Her Again. Atmospheric and interesting so far.

Waiting for Under the Skin 2 to start. Trailer looks good!

Brewing Love: It was JUSTTT….fine, lol. Our couples are cute, our stories are quaintly wrapped, and the beer has won gold, what more could we ask for.

Light Shop: I didn’t expect this to be horror. So, I was startled at first, because I am not particularly a horror fan, but I kind of liked it.

Family Matters: This drama is slow paced, which I don’t mind. I also appreciate that it isn’t a single drop. I prefer this way of learning new information each episode and what their powers are.

When the Phone Rings?: I am sad not to watch it this weekend, but protecting their country from the inner party trying to bring SK down is more important. I wish half of US voters understood that, but I digress, this is not the place. Netflix shows that it will be uninterrupted after this though, which is good.

The tale of Lady Ok: I am very much looking forward to episode 3, I wonder if it will be just as long. Hopefully, they tell us who “twin, where have you been?” is. I look forward to her getting justice.

Marry You: 💍 (5-6) A lot was revealed! The ML's past is just as wholesome as he is, and the SFL is just as selfish as she seemed from the start. The ML and FL have such a warm and sweet rapport, but we need to move on to romance!! My ideal ending: time jump to ML and FL running their own matchmaking business/restaurant; they're enjoying dating, and the twins are helping ML plan a proposal. *throws confetti* 😂

Parole Examiner Lee👨‍⚖️ (5-6) I keep wanting to call him Secret Royal Inspector Lee! This is exciting and very satisfying to see justice done. But I think it's taken a turn for the dark with the introduction of a Big Bad... 😬😨

●63% done with Family By Choice San-ha's mom is the woooooorst. Everyone else is awesome. THEY NEED TO BE HAPPY FOREVER AND EVER. Also: unleash the romance!!!
●68% done with Cheat On Me If You Can oooh I wasn't expecting those reveals! But they make so much sense and match the evidence we already had.
●30% done with She Would Never Know Rowooooooooon 😍
Spotify Wrapped Stats: I listened to 3,221 artists this year, but I'm in the top 0.5% of listeners to ATEEZ!
In other news... Mom finished Cafe Minamdang, and really enjoyed it! She loved the cast.

My Journey to You: This was awesome! Dark and moody, mysterious and beguiling, tense and twisty, and utterly gorgeous. The visuals are stunning - it's worth the watch for them alone. This was also a good follow-up watch to The Double for me, although not quite as satisfying. As a wuxia, this has some great action and combat scenes. The ending is kind of open but I was fine with it - this drama never promises more. In the end, it was about... ~the journey~ (sorry, I couldn't resist). Recommend if you like moody wuxia that are strong on visuals!

I was just thinking about She Would Never Know/Sunbae's Forbidden Lipstick the other day. I could really do with a rom-com that is that well-done right about now. Those are virtues indeed 😉

The Tale of Lady Ok (1-2): The episodes were long, but this was a very promising start. Hopefully it keeps this up for the whole run. Totally here for Gudeok fighting the good fight against the rich and powerful. Bring it on!

Face Me (9-10): I mean, let's be honest, were we really expecting Lee Yi-Kyung not to be evil in this? I do wonder if and how Jung-woo's mom ties into all this though. Also, wasn't expecting Min-Hyung's brother to survive. I was so sure he was dead, so that was a pleasant surprise. In other good news: Hyo Ju finally got the surgery she wanted. Too bad that's where the good news ends because her life is in danger yet again. Hasn't she been through enough? Just leave her in peace darn it.

Light Shop (1-2): Somehow I wasn't actually aware this was a horror show. But anyway, it really nails that vibe. It's unsettling, creepy, and very mysterious. And somehow even a thunderstorm makes for a very effective jumpscare (multiple times). However I'm not exactly sure what story this show is actually trying to tell, but it's still early. Haven't had time to watch episodes 3 & 4 yet.

Family Matters: 8.5 I'm not likely to fall asleep in the middle of this one. 😲

The Trunk 5.0 Out partway thru ep 2. There's enough bleak, depressing, ominous stuff in the real world. I don't need more in my entertainment.

Fiery Priest s2: 7.0 Not really to my taste, but bonus for creativity with the singing confession and the puppet (which really reminded me of the one in the Smile Time episode of Angel)

When The Phone Rings: 8.0 Nowadays should be "When the Phone Plays Your Custom Ringtone".
Alternate Titles Game, Chae Soo-bin edition:
Strongest Interpreter
I'm Not a Mutist
Rookie Interpreter

The Tale of Lady Ok: 7.5 Using fire arrows for that night attack at the end of ep 1 was silly -- pretty but just extra trouble for the bandits and likely burns up a lot of the loot. Pros would kill everyone, collect everything worth carrying, then maybe torch the place. Sigh. Drama.

Parole Examiner Lee: 7.3

Face Me: 6.5 Really?? Hypnosis to recover memories? I thought hypnosis worked better to implant false memories. Then persuade people the false memories are real and you can frame somebody, "solve" your mystery, make yourself look smart and claim hypnosis is valuable. But it's all bullshit.

Light Shop: 5.5 for episodes 1 & 2. Took too long to get around to whatever the point is.

Love Your Enemy: Dropped

Marry You: 6.0 Not really worth my time, but I've gone this far...

Meanwhile, recent events in S. Korea seem to indicate that it is possible for democratic institutions to slap down a (corrupt??) right-wing president who doesn't know his place and violates democratic norms. Interesting...

And Syria: not the 3-day special military operation Putin wanted.

MARRY YOU (ep. 5-6) This week we had a blizzard of out-of-the-blue story details with frantic, sudden, new plot ends. At the halfway point, (1) we have a semi-evil heiress who jumped the gun to trap her man-prey; (2) Hana the public servant who between balancing her desire for work promotion and a new personal life chose work; (3) Bong is having conflicting reservations about leaving his island life; (4) and a show that introduces new characters every week; and (5) the Twins are the stars of the show.

Live Watches
Brewing Love: This week wasn’t quite as strong as previous weeks, but I find myself not caring at all. With our kind leads, cute seconds, and endearing villagers, I’m just happy to hang out. Sad that this show is ending this week but hoping for a good wrap up for everyone (excluding that mean section leader who is literally the only “bad” character in the whole show)!

Love Your Enemy: I‘m still not completely sure how I feel about this, or how I’ll feel once we stop doing these long teenage-version scenes, but I was still extremely entertained last week, so I’ll continue. I’m always here to see a guy be an absolute loser in love, and Seok-Ji is already up there with the greats! Plus, we seem to be destined for cohabitation hijinks, so I’m definitely not missing that!

Recent Dramas:
Jeongnyeon: (7 episode in) I like this way more than last week. I find it endlessly fascinating to see the different actors’ takes on each of the roles. I wish I could have seen more of Doeng with her outright threatening Gomigeol, but Youngseo is incredibly with her strategist and I was blown away by Jeongnyeon’s seductor version (and so was Jooran hahaha!). If the whole show was just people figuring out their roles and then performing them, I would be thrilled, but something tells me we’re headed for more external conflict soon.

I was thrilled by how much Jeongnyeon stayed focused on the actual performances, and that it actually showed each actor making their own choices about each role and how that played out on stage. I also would have loved to see more of Doeng and thought the actor who played her was terrific.

Jeongnyeon was fantastic, with only a few things I did not like, and even them ... just a small twist and I would have liked them better.
I'm asking Santa for spin-offs, with lots of music and, though this drama ends fairly happily, I want spin-offs that just end in triumph, happiness, and love all over - and the bad guys having digged their own grave. Muahaha. Please, writer-nim.

Light Shop (First impressions)
While this is certainly the better Joo Ji Hoon show that’s airing right now, I wouldn’t say it’s amazing given how the plot twist at the end of the 1st half of the show was quite obviously telegraphed with the ICU patients being left out of shot. I’m curious to see where the show goes from here but there’s a lot of unrelated procedurals to untangle within the 2nd half.

Family Matters (First impressions)
So there’s the whole superpower grooming thing that seems to be inspired from Moving, a serial killer angle, along with the whole prosperity theology cliche whenever a show needs to have some religious drama, not forgetting our beloved school bullying, the animal abuse, the excessive gore and a reference to the Burning Sun scandal. Too many cooks, I’ll say.

The Tale of Lady Ok (Episode 1-2) - Mood: C-
Despite the too-easy-to-hate villains and a doppelgänger trope that seems to have come out of nowhere, I’m feeling great about the narrative tension now that we’ve gotten past the setup and our FL is now fully embracing her new identity. I’m so confused about how the ML’s ride or die for the FL that quickly but I guess it’s just drama magic. Hopefully this stays good!

Love Your Enemy (Episode 3-4) - Mood: D+
Cohabitation trope! Of course, the ML decided to move in after hearing that the 2ML moved in. Speaking of which, the 2ML is cute but I feel bad for the actor: the writer pretty much undercut the character arc by having the ML hijack the past as in the epilogue. And then there’s the 2FL whose characterisation’s so bad that no words are needed: it’s just pathetic writing.

When the Phone Rings (Episode 3-4) - Mood: D+
Ok, now we have the childhood connection trope plus more switched identities. I guess that was a good cliffhanger since it was time the ML found out about the FL blackmailing him before it dragged too long, but the show already has sis prepped and ready to add more nonsense into the plot. Is the 2FL our last hope for a character that is totally unrelated to makjang?

Brewing Love (Episode 9-10) - Mood: D
It’s like a cursed pattern: when the OTP was going through turbulence the second couple was all joy, but now it’s the OTP’s turn to be happy while the second couple takes turns to be the noble idiot. I think in the real world, therapy instead of love? Also, the corporate stuff is suffocating the whole narrative but we’re bringing it into the finale? That’s a bold choice, writer.

Re BREWING LOVE. Good observations. Perhaps getting professional help for his PTSD rather than just sucking it up for 5 years would have been more beneficial for Chan-hwi. However, I think the scene in the pool (designed to give us his traumatic background in Special Forces) backfired a little bit. Not in the story telling which was quite dramatic but we got to see Chan-hwi’s (played by Baek Sung-chul) physique before jumping into the pool. I said to myself, ‘I don’t think this guy would have made the cut for Special Forces.” He has the height at 6’1” but not the weight. He (along with Lee Jong-won) is very slim. (Lol, after a cursory search I could not find out BSC’s weight.)

LIVE WATCHES:

1. BREWING LOVE - As always, this is a delightful weekly watch with a light touch. Even better - NO SERIAL KILLER STORYLINE CRAMMED IN!

2. LOVE YOUR ENEMY - I like this drama quite a lot. I know a lot of Beanies can't stand the squabbling ML-FL but after seeing what happened to them as teens, I think it's fine because they are literally the embodiment of how the people who affected us the most in our childhood and teen years know exactly how to push our buttons to get us to regress to that behaviour sometimes. And with the ML/FL, there's a lot of unresolved and unnecessary hurt that needs to be addressed.

3. MARRY YOU - What a horrible person In-Ah has turned out to be with her trying to get rid of the ML's niece and nephew by packing them off to school abroad. ML needs to nip all her attempts at forming a relationship with him in the bud because she is just bad news all around.

4. LIGHT SHOP - An intriguing and eerie start to this Supernatural Horror drama by Kang Full has me impatient for next week's episode.

Without a doubt, the most gripping drama this week streamed from the streets of Seoul. If we fear it can happen with the populists in our own backyard, we can also hope to stand as strong as the people and (some) politicians of South Korea. #IYKYK

I've often wondered why the plucky slaves remain grateful second leads to their noble owners in sageuks. Well, not so Lady OK! Some minor quibbles aside, what a great start. I am going to love this if it doesn’t go astray. The other drama that kept me on the edge of my seat was Light Shop, but I've only completed Ep. 1 so far. I need a breather after what happened to my poor Uhm Tae-goo. And also, to make sure someone's in the house with me while I watch. 🧳🩸 😱 😂

Yes, there's also tension in When the Phone Rings, but mostly, it's just such a fun watch. Also fun was Sorry Not Sorry. Yes, rather basic, but I quite enjoyed watching JSM as our down-in-the-dumps heroine beginning her journey. Is anyone else watching?

I'm still enjoying Iron Family though these recent episodes are taking the characters through the wringer. While Brewing Love continues to be my mild palate cleanser amid the more high-stake dramas.

In the mixed emotions camp, while I continue to adore the young leads of Love Your Enemy, the focus really needs to shift to the grown-ups for the rest of the drama to shine. I also binged The Trunk, which, well, could have been worse. And I dropped Fangs of Fortune, my one-and-only current C-drama.

With the long holiday weekend last week, so much work, and so many on-air dramas, I'd fallen quite behind. But with the break in many shows, I'm trying to decide whether to pick up again Marry You or Face Me, which I'd paused. Anyone watching both?

The faithful-slave thing: Yes, people seem to love imagining that servants not only are happy for their jobs and may like their employers, /in these cases: *owners*!) but that they feel their own unworthiness so deeply they are willing to put down their lives for their employer/owner. It's like they can't imagine that the slaves, servants, or evev clerks, are the protagnonists of their own lives and their boss/owner is just a side character - who most often isn't even supporting.
I haven't watched Lady OK but maybe I should?

I really hope there will be no repetition USA remake of the Korean Street Drama from Tuesday night. But the Prez elect has kind of promised there would, so it's a question whether the democratic institutions can carry the weight of that, even with what has happened to the courts. Apart from underground work, (Like e.g. The Janes) the best thing to do is to keep an eye on local elections and work to do something in every nook and corner where citizens can have a say.
From Denmark, I wish you luck from my heart. Firstly, I do not like to see things go badly anywhere. Secondly, USA affects the rest of us a lot. We ought to have a say, really. Like, just a third or a quarter of a vote.

I don't know how much the news made it out of the US, but there was a wave of articles over the summer how women had been active beneficiaries of slavery. Oppression really is intersectional. And Lady OK doesn't shy away from that at all.

I liked it with some caveats. Remember how some folks felt KTR overacted at points in Jeongnyeon? There's a bit of that here too (while touching upon more uncomfortable tropes). But I think given the arc of the story, we'll see very little of that going forward. Oh, and as a bonus, we got a show within a show that was somewhere between cirque du soleil and pansori. 😂 I'm not selling it, am I? But it's good, really.

I truly don't know what's going to happen. But history can turn on a dime. Who would have thought democracy would come under attack in "stable" South Korea? But I love your rest-of-the-world vote sharing idea. 😂 Only so many parts of the world also cause me grave concern.

I continue to be inspired by South Koreans. From the Washington Post:
“Tens of thousands of people gathered outside of the National Assembly to call for Yoon’s impeachment, braving freezing temperatures and holding a candlelight protest during the vote Saturday. Young fans of K-pop groups joined the protest with their favorite band’s light sticks, and families brought children to witness the historical moment.”
That Yoon’s party members wouldn’t even stand up and be counted in the vote, a lot like spineless “people’s representatives “ here, is shameful.
Thank you for your support! I’m ready with my Big Bang lightstick should it come to that.

I was a bit surprised by that, too.
I thought that maybe they guessed that it wasn't very intense (yet). Still ... somewhat of a risk to just take.

1

@ceciliedk as someone who personally lived through 3 instances of overthrowing government via people's force, I stand firmly at the belief that there is NO less intense danger for a human life in such instances. The entire idea is ridiculous - it's unarmed (at least initially - if yall ever need a lecture on impromptu weapons for street protests...) civilians against trained legal enforcers with guns etc, how in the world can it be safe? No one below at least high school age (and even that is rather undesirable, but historically teens were always at the front lines of any activist movement, so keeping them home when there's a big shuffle outside is a task close to impossible) should be there, period.

2

I hear you. And I wouldn't bring children to that either.
I don't think Korean parents generally would just bring their children along if they were expecting a lot of violence, so (please don't get mad at me for guessing) I am guessing that because this whole thing did not happen after any kind of unrest in the streets, no overturning of cars, no thrown rotten fruit and no demos ending in violence in the near past, - that like the martial law declaration seemed like it couldn't be true, so there was a general sense of ... "We are going to protest!W - but also "The soldiers are not trained in considering a crowd on the streets as North Korean infiltrators" ... I mean, an expectation that it will not be like if the same thing happened after some escalation.
Just like I think that there have been confrontations between military and demonstrators in the eighties in SK where no one would have dared push the weapon of a soldier, or just snatch their phone back from him (if they had had one then) and then give him a firm, but harmless push in the back away from them. People were not as afraid as they would usually be, and they judged the situation right.
One important thing was that they were not really overthrowing the government ... (yet) but only the martial law.
I wouldn't bring my children their either, (except they are old enough that they might go there and I would just come after them with an incessant stream of "No, don't go there! Don't frown at that soldier, darling! How about we stay here in the back? I'm sure it's helpful, just in numbers. Pull up your facial mask, someone may have a cold (or a camera). I think we have protested enough, children, let's go home."
I am sorry for you to have had to go through that ... three times at that. I sometimes get very angry at injustices and think: "Do rulers and people with money forget that people only put up with this as long as it is better than risking their lives?" But there's a long way between some clear injustice and then injustice enough to make an actual rebellion, ready for physical resistance, too, the best option.

1

THERE
I wouldn't bring my chilren there, and certainly not "their".
It's the Midnight Speller who strikes again.

@ceciliedk that's the thing - street protests can ALWAYS escalate from peaceful few people demonstration into bloody country-level carnage with no more than just one tiny sparkle, gas station explosion style. That's in the core nature of crowds and ever-presented danger of them. These 3 instances I talked about also initially started as innocent students marches with no intention beyond voicing their (perfectly valid in terms of law and nation's interests) opinion and then going home without stirring any further trouble, but then... And each time brought even bigger scale of eventual conflict and casualties. One can NEVER know how far this will go before it's 100% over and you're indeed back at home in one piece.

The only reason I can explain parents doing so is blissful ignorance of such matters - after all, SK is a relatively peaceful country in terms of out-in-the-open violence, esp gun violence. And I both envy and pity their happy bubble of not really understanding what kind of bullet they nearly dodged. It was a necessary risk, yes, but it was still a real risk for adults only to take.

Thank you. Too bad that weren't the last - or even worst - trying times in my annoyingly eventful life...

1

This is a chilling thread. I have no tolerance for incompetent parenting and hauling your youngsters onto the street to "experience" street protests qualifies.

Gikata is right on the money. Street protests can rapidly escalate; crowd control is not for amateurs. It only takes a few ill-intentioned individuals to turn a peaceful crowd into an angry mob.

Children should not be anywhere near this kind of unpredictable situation. The fact that the crowd failed to turn into a mob is fortunate; I hope those SK parents learned a lesson.

1

I am so so impressed by the SK populace. They actually held a political protest that did not turn violent.

The content we watch sometimes makes us apathetic to the background turmoil.

I agree with Gikata here. Kids should stay far far away from any such gathering. It would take only one tear gas....

The Trunk - This one required a whole lot of settling in into. After episode 3, I entered a binge-fest and every other drama took a backseat. Major points I noted.
In-ji and Jeong-won took and found comfort in each other's presence. I really cheered when I saw this guy enter a peaceful state. The last time this happened was Perfect Marriage Revenge when Seo Do-guk slept without having to take pills and for such a stretched amount of time. Seeing Jeong-won sleep on his own brought that nostalgia back, like he finally found home.
His ex-wife Seo-yeon is crazy toxic, but I really wanted things to work out between her and her arranged husband. I loved their resolution at the end. In-ji had her running for her money though.

Which brings me to my tiff. Episode 8. Don't ever break up with me in that manner ever. That was quite traumatic to experience - to see your night ruined in such a manner especially after all the comfort from that day's troubles and the... I'm lost for words. That was very cruel. I really wished they found each other. I really wished I met them at the the resolution written for Seo-yeon and Ji-o by the time The Trunk ended.

Iron Family - I wish Crosswalk we well.
And, nice smooching by Bom Apps and Auntie Mi-yeon.

When The Phone Rings - They saved the sweetest part of it all for last. Now I have to wait for another week to see what happened in that preview.

Waiting for the Phone to Ring has never had me in such a tizzy before... So rewatching bits and pieces on social media is my only go-to during this excruciating delay.
Other than that, Trunk was a great, great, watch, which I did twice already... Gong Yoo looks like an incredibly handsome turtle somehow (Just me who feels that way? Ok!) The OST is playing on loop as well. One of my favourite shows of the year.

Every other show is just plain boiled milk compared to these two, so not even trying to watch anything else.

Happy Saturday, Beanies! Hope your day was better than mine that sucked all around)))

SEE HER AGAIN: I'd really love to ask makers of this version WHY they decided to add this makjangy connection between two important characters that not only stretches my suspension of disbelief paper thin – so far there's no indication of it being done on purpose, so what were the odds? - but also makes everyone look extra freaking dumb. And lemme tell you – I wasn't all that impressed characters intelligence here so far... Original had plenty of their stupid moments too, but at least these made sense via characterization, but here? Not to mention that this leads to a clear conflict of interests/authority abuse, but everyone is OK with it somehow? Eh, whatever. Psycho guy remains the best thing about it with his gruesome backstory and commitment to being chaos agent. Good part is that ML has grown on me, but others will probably remain a mind-numbing white noise till the end.

BLACK AND WHITE FOREST: I'm very, very confused right now – what the hell is even going on here? Why all the characters – esp cops and gangsters – seem related, and openly so? That's cheating, yunno))) Why Ning Li's team leader is so unjustly hostile to DYX's ML, despite them being not only coworkers but also apparently in-laws? Why everyone blames ML for “losing his gun” when it was a sneaky violent attack and robbery? I get that it's a big deal, esp in a country with strict guns control, but come on, he's a victim here, leave it at suspension, why bullying the guy? Also it's ridiculous to see gangsters this silly, being all TERRIFIED of a shooting – their line of job doesn't produce faint-hearted people... For now it looks like a cheap law-themed makjang comedy, ans hardly funny one at that, not a thriller at all. If things don't get better soon, I'm out. At least episodes are extra short, only 37 minutes with credits...

BLOSSOM: I was really bored and needed some non-modern drama for a change. Overall, it's OK: much more smooth writing/directing/pacing than most costume shows lately, gorgeous cinematography, pretty standard rebirth/do-over revenge plot (but somewhat creatively done usual “it was all a dream... or was it?” censorship loophole) with all the genre tropes like cheating husbands, awful parents, scheming mistresses and framed generals. But it's not the tropes that matter, it's execution, right? So far I'm not annoyed. The biggest downside is leads – not that they are bad actors, no... but I don't find them truly gripping (yet?). ML playing General Bloody Rebel is especially not it with his flower boy face and gentle eyes. Where is the murderous rizz, dude? Alas, it happens more often than not in cdramas, so I'll get over it someday. Probably.

Still need to catch up with THE FIERY PRIEST 2 and glimpse at LIGHT SHOP.

- dramas confirmed to air: iQiyi-Tencent's UNDER THE SKIN 2 (Tan Jianci, Jin Shijia, crime mystery) on December 10th, Youku's THE LEGEND OF TAOTIE (An Yuexi, Wang Youshuo, Niu Zifan, Chu Junchen, xianxia? romance about food?) that's been shelved since 2018 (!) also on December 10th.

- dramas that just got licensed: Youku's JUDGE DEE'S MYSTERY 2 (Zhou Yiwei, Wang Likun, Zhong Chuxi, Zhang Jiayi, historical mystery).

- dramas announced: Tencent's SHINE ON ME (Song Weilong, Zhao Jinmai, modern romance), iQiyi's THE SOUTH BUREAU (Ding Yuxi, Zhang Xincheng, Republican mystery), Tencent's 800 METERS (Xu Kai, Ding Yongdai, Deng Enxi, action thriller) and iQiyi-Tencent's REBIRTH (Li Yunrui, Huangyang Tiantian, Zhang Kangle, historical action romance, PRINCESS AGENTS sequel apparently changed into prequel-reboot), all 4 already started filming. As well as Tencent's THE RICHEST POOR GUY (Peng Yuchang, Lin Yun, Liu Guanlin, office comedy).

- casting rumors: Youku's THE EARLY SPRING (Chen Feyu, workplace romance), Tencent's IN THE MOONLIGHT (Bao Shangen, Wang Hongyi, historical palace intrigue romance).

- more AJTL trophies, more! Remember I told yall few months ago about it being nominated in bunch of categories from 29th Asian Television Awards? Well, last week it won in 2 of them: “Best Original Digital Drama Series” and “Best Original Screenplay”. Also packed some more tonight on iQiyi Scream Night, but I'll cover that next time because I'm lazy and just injured my arm in 2 separate places...

1. Tencent’s SEE HER AGAIN. I finished the Canto version on the Youtube channel: Kukan Drama English. Overall I enjoyed it perhaps because like you I enjoyed ML William Chan’s performance. OCN’s TUNNEL (2017) had a more engrossing plot and was a better production overall but I enjoyed being back in Hong Kong. I think William Chan and Choi Jin-hyuk would be GREAT together is a crime drama reprising their respective roles.
2. Tencent’s BLACK AND WHITE FOREST. I have pulled the plug after 9 episodes. I just could not see hanging in there for another 19 episodes. Ning Li was the class of the cast in the early episodes but given the material there are 2 other cops/crime/mystery drama on iQIYI that I would rather invest my time: WE ARE CRIMINAL POLICE (38 eps.) and UNDER THE SKIN SEASON 2.

1. I'm still not done with SHA, will probably finish this weekend. Plot could've been better - I wonder how people more familiar with current HK dramas would rate this one? - but yes, Canto flavor! Interesting idea about SK-HK co-production - are there any? I think I've seen a few movies, but dramas...

2. Too bad, but you're right, FOREST is just not good enough story-wise for its solid cast. Pity. Since it doesn't get better even 9 episodes in, I don't see the point in continuing either.

WE ARE THE CRIMINAL POLICE seems to be the last minute 2024 hit iQiyi was desperately needing both in terms of ratings a reviews. What's with this platform and their very end of the year lucky strike?))) Hope 2025 fares better for them in general.

I assume you watched UNDER THE SKIN1, right? Is it that good?

I did watch the original UNDER THE SKIN in 2022. It had 20 episodes and was available on Viki.
I recall really enjoying it. Forensic art was an unusual subject but it was character driven with a good part of the drama having to do with the evolving relationship of the two leads. At the beginning the detective lead detested the artist lead.
UTS2 is 28 episodes. The relationship between the two leads is now established. To be perfectly honest I forget exactly how the original ended. It must have left the door open for a continuation. Maybe I should rewatch the last couple of episodes of the original series. I will definitely get to it but I watched the first two episodes tonight of WE ARE CRIMINAL POLICE and I am hooked lol.

We Are Criminal Police. Nail-biting my way through episodes as they're released on iQiYi. The longest manhunt in drama history. When are they ever going to get this guy? The point-blank shooting in NYC came along in the middle of this drama manhunt and the style of the crime was so similar it was uncanny.

One notable thing about this drama: the faces of dead victims are blurred out, also evidence of violence to corpses. No forensic porn here. I am so grateful.

I'm not watching too much at the moment. While WHEN THE PHONE RINGS is practically pushing everything else into the background, I can spare some time for LOVE YOUR ENEMY (I liked episode 4 better than the rest, good thing I haven't given up yet) and THE TALE OF LADY OK.

WHEN THE PHONE RINGS: While some (@missvictrix) calculate how often Yoo Yeon-seok's left hand with his wedding ring is in the picture, I count how often he raises his right eyebrow. I hadn't realised how sexy that can be.

Ballad of Seo Dong/The Song of the Prince: I'd wanted to watch this pre-Queen Seondeok Kim Young Hyun sageuk for years and it just popped up on Kocowa. It's definitely old school, but in a good way, and while it doesn't have the cracktastic narrative pull of Kim's later shows, its exploration of technological innovation and industrial espionage in the Three Kingdoms era is quite fun from a history-geek perspective.

When the Phone Rings: I'm not sure this will ultimately end up making any sense, even by the twisted logic of rich people makjang, and this is definitely NOT my favorite flavor of male lead, but Chae Soo Bin's character is intriguing enough that I may give it a few more episodes and see where it goes.

Hello
FAMILY BY CHOICE. Up to episode 6
# somepeopleshouldnothavekids

I like how there's a relationship between each of the kids separately, not just as a trio or each boy with the girl. The relationship between the boys in the kdrama version seems more distinct as a standalone than from what I can recall of the cdrama.

The policeman dad is frustratingly too passive for my tastes. He could more actively protect his poor traumatised son from the toxic mother. And how does it take so many years to say the important words of "it wasn't your fault"?

If I were being charitable, I could say oh the mother was suffering from post partum depression, or oh she is wracked with guilt which is too overwhelming for her psyche, so she unconsciously projects this guilt on to her son as a self protective mechanism. This still does not give her the right to torture her son!! It's almost unbearable to watch. Surely the policeman dad is trained to identify trauma and has access to the necessary professional services to support families in these circumstances? At the very least to provide professional support to his own son.

Of the three kids, I'm sure it's no surprise to hear that I find myself identified more with the Sanha character.

Having finished the last 2 episodes of 3 MEALS A DAY LIGHT 2024, during the time i was starting FAMILY BY CHOICE, my casting for the dad couple in Family by choice in an alternate universe are Cha Seung Won for the chef dad, and Yoo Hae Jin for the policeman dad. Fans of 3 meals a day: don't you think this is huge missed opportunity for dream casting? Lol!

WHEN THE PHONE RINGS. Up to episode 4

I'm in for the ride, like so many of you! Somehow this show is working for me, when I couldnt get past the first few episodes of QoT. Not sure why this is, maybe that something something that YYS is bringing to the role?

Anyway, was pleasantly surprised that his discovery that she speaks (and that she is the caller as the end of ep 4 seems to suggest), came so early. I thought it would be dragged out a bit more.

I agree with the speculation that he may not be the biological son and that there is some connection with the mansion and the sunbea.

Does anyone think the FL father is not as incapacitated as he seems to be?

Must confess I'm fairly distracted (not in a good way) by the perfect skin and perfect hair of the ML, especially after watching a few oldie dramas these recent months. Also noticed this unnaturally out of place perfect skin and hair in Family by choice (chef dad). It jolts me out of the story.

VIRTUOUS BUSINESS. Up to episode 8? I think it is. I'm stuck, or rather not immediately pressing play for the next episode. I think it's the story with the struggling couple with the 3?4? kids and now he's an accomplice...it's pressing all my buttons. I think I will finish but it feels like a slog at the moment.

Hi beanies!!

What I am watching:

_ Marry You (6 episodes out of 10). I'm still enjoying this little drama which is deeper than it seemed. I really like the ML (Lee Yi Kyung) and his emotional intelligence.

_ When the phone rings (4 out of 12). Honestly, I'm not very invested in this drama, but it's being fun to share some theories with my friends.

_ The tale of Lady Ok (2 out of 16). Wow, what a good start! I love everything so far. There are some powerful sequences and beautiful scenes.

_ Jugglers (8 out or 16). I'm enjoying this rom-com a lot. I'm glad I didn't drop it, the main couple is giving me butterflies.

_ C-drama Later I laughed (16 out of 24). I have a problem with this show. It's about stand-up comedy but I don't find their monologues funny. They don't even make me smile.
The drama has other virtues, though. Interesting reflections on life/peace of mind/dreams/career... and a good OST.

_ Anime. Remake of Ranma 1/2 on Netflix. 9 episodes. I was a fan of the original anime when I was a child. I can say this remake is very similar.

What I have finished:

_ C-drama The Bond. This is so good! If you love slice-of-life dramas, you have to watch it.

Western shows:

_ Just started Only murders in the building Season 4.

The island locations gave me "Dog knows everything" vibes and I thought they would spend more time there.

3

I wish they'd stayed in the rural area, too... the city just isn't as warm of a setting. But it's still my current comfort drama!!

3

Yeah, it's Injeong rather than Seoul. I often wonder how these cities--like Onju in Destined with You--get chosen. Do they vie for the production money with deep discounts? Probably.

It's clear that Busan has been doing a lot of investment in the dramas, getting folks to do as much "PPL Busan Tourism" as possible!! I mean, it's working...I can now recognize Busan's architecture on sight.

Weirdly enough, I find the Later, I laughed hilarious in scenes OUTSIDE of the stand up.
E.g The fight between the ex and the classmate in ep 7 and the narrator concluding that the ex needs to see a cardiologist.

The writer has a great sense of humor, but it either does not translate into stand up or includes too many Chinese word plays & refences that we are missing.

Initially I thought the narrator was one of the characters telling the story at one point I thought it was Shi Ye.

I am convinced it has taken the idea of The marvellous Mrs Maisel and modernised it. I miss the Agent character she was such a key part of the fun. I really enjoyed the first couple of seasons of Mrs Maisel but then it lost its sparkle.

I like that Xiu Ya was funny from childhood. I have been fascinated with how they have shown the stand up style with the different personalities. I hope the second couple get it together as they are so cute together.

I have been wondering who will be the end game partner for Xiu Ya as she could just as easily be single and happily independent by the end. The jury is still out, because it’s the first time I have seen a drama with three love interests!

I will miss this show when it ends. Its the first time in a while the 24 episode format has not felt padded out.

Imo this drama could have been shorter. Maybe 20 episodes? I find some episodes a little boring.

It had a really good start, though.

About the second couple, Dong is my favorite character in this drama (if I don't count the narrator). If I were Xiu Ya or Xiao Lan I would have had a crush on him, hands down.

1

Are we discussing that cdrama now? Wohoo. I have been enjoying it a lot and there is zero conversation about it anywhere else.

The show had one of the best explanations for the sudden personality change I have seen on TV. Xiu Ya becoming timed not because she got bullied into it, but because she got convinced that speaking up will only cause disproportionate troubles for others was very in-character. Her being kind above outspoken was a welcoming touch that I feel a lot of "strong" female leads lack.

I have watched only 8 episodes so far, but I am strongly convinced she ends up with her classmate. Is not the endgame in c-dramas clear based on who is closer to the FL on the poster? is that only a kdrama thing?

For all the irrational reasons, I am cheering for the ex the most. The guy is hilariously pathetic and looks like he just found out that the cat he had for years can actually talk.

@isagc , admittedly, the disappearance of the narrator is a bit of a mood killer. I enjoyed the random facts he would throw out to

2

@nerdy

One of my friends who is also watching this drama is rooting for the ex-boyfriend XD At first she didn't like him but now she feels sorry for him. He is not a bad person, he simply had taken Xiu Ya for granted (and tried to decide for her too many times, without paying attention to what she really wanted).

2

@nerdy @isagc I am so glad you two are chatting about this drama because I was gutted no one else was watching. I agree that in an ideal world the 12 episode format for C dramas is the sweet spot but for a 24 episode drama this has done well to minimise the negativity which usually gets on my nerves especially when they cycle through it in two variations just to fill the time.
Re the potential boyfriend two are close to her so that’s what made me think if they are stretching it to three would they just go for no one in the end to show her as a strong independent woman. It would be nice for it to end up being the desk mate but I can also see them making it work with her being single too.
I agree Dong is super cute in looks and personality and more my style than the other male characters.
Nerdy please tag me in to your comment when you share your views when you finish watching.

2

@reply1988, I sure would! This drama is my comfort show during all the broadcasting schedule changes.

2

The Trunk. I may have only started watching this for Gong Yoo & his cardigans (Gong Yoo - King of Knitwear!), but this turned out to a really good Gothic drama to pass the dark winter evenings. Grimly foreboding house, twisted villains, vulnerable protagonists. Well-written characters. Lots of suspense and atmosphere, without ever being too dark.

Face Me. Oh, this is badly acted. And I guessed who the real villain was several episodes ago. But still, it's entertaining, and I watch. 😊

When the Phone Rings. Remarkably cheesy, and I am enjoying it immensely. Can't wait till next weekend when the series resumes airing.

Marry You. Bit disappointed with this. It just seems to get blander as it goes on.

C-drama

Brocade Odyssey. Ouch. This is bad. Completely and utterly unoriginal in every way - practically Grand Theft Plot. And how could they write it without a single convincing character in it? Dropped hastily.

Blossom. I actually enjoyed the first two episodes. There is a slim chance this might be watchable. (But if so, everyone will die in the end, almost certainly, right?)

Later I Laughed. I'm liking the smart & sympathetic female protagonist, and the two sides to her personality - the quiet conformist protective camouflage, and the real person underneath, the sarky rebel. This is actually quite cleverly written so far, but I haven't reached episode ten yet. (Not sure if this is another of those dramas written by a team of writers, so will have to wait and see whether the quality of the writing varies...)

@zindigo @isagc

I’ve tried to start Story of Kunning Palace (with Bai Lu & Zhang Ling He) thrice now and I’ve never been able to finish Ep. 1, which is weird, because I absolutely love love love Bai Lu, so I blame it on Zhang Ling He— I guess I haven’t been able to warm up to him (yet?) 😂 And again, I just can’t with Esther Yu at all— I’ve tried 3 dramas of her and I did not even finish Ep. 1 of any of those dramas 🤔

I await the day the both of them will prove me wrong and a drama of theirs can and will pull me in and keep me entertained and invested

1

@nessa
Esther Yu is completely different in My Journey to Love than any of her other dramas. No squeaky voice! This is turning into one of my most favorite c-dramas. I'm blown away. It's SO good. I'll post a short review in WWW this weekend :-)

2

Oooh good to know! I look forward to your upcoming review! As I know you and I have quite the similar tastes in dramas 😊

2

Nah, you aren't wrong, SWORD AND BROCADE was not a great show - dull storyline, rigid chemistry, absolutely brain-dead misunderstanding from FL's side midway, largely forgettable performance from usually amazing at romance melo Wallace Chung etc. Must be the genre/theme bias from inner court drama lovers or something.

3
5

Good to know lol 😅 Or maybe I can do slice-of-life for most modern/contemporary C-dramas but have to be more picky and choose-y with this genre when it comes to costume dramas, because I watched— and absolutely loved loved loved and adored— New Life Begins, which is costume slice-of-life and very cottage core. It may also be the cast— the last time I watched, and liked, Wallace Chung in something was the modern drama, My Sunshine (https://mydramalist.com/9137-my-sunshine) from 10 years ago, and Tan Song Yun is very touch-n-go for me depending on her role (my favorite role of hers still remains as the one from her drama with Jing Boran, Road Home, which is also slice-of-life [https://mydramalist.com/700295-gui-lu])

1

@nessa I believe it was writing, first and foremost. And probably lack of screen testing done to the cast to see if they click BEFORE starting to shoot - big mistake, no self-respecting cinema should skip this step, esp for romance genre.

Hah, funny - I love Wallace, but MY SUNSHINE almost made me want to strangle everyone involved in it, him included. Then again, I dislike that novel writer's style and every single drama made from her works was godawful as far I am concerned. That one was probably THE worst though, I made a conscious effort to erase it from my brain entirely (and succeeded given how I couldn't recognize LYX playing teen ML years after in another drama).

Slice is a hard genre to pull, it requires VERY good writing and VERY good ensemble cast with zero weak links to keep the viewers engaged despite little to no conflict... In other words, true rarity.

1

Maybe! 🤔
I think a lot of times, it’s just a matter of “you like what you like, and don’t like what you don’t like”, too. I think our different perspectives about Silent Separation may be an unintended example of this lol The drama adaptations of the OG novel writer’s works are a mixed bag for me. Of the drama adaptations that I’ve seen:
Silent Separation was okay— I will randomly revisit it once in a blue moon, but will only re-watch certain parts and episodes. The more I re-watched Scarlet Heart, the more I wanted to pull my hair out and strangle the FL character, so I stopped re-watching after 2 times. Go Go Squid was cute when I mindlessly watched it (I’m okay with age gap couples if done right— I know a few age gap couples as friends irl) but it has no re-watch value, imho. The Flame’s Daughter was forgettable. HOWEVER, I absolutely love love love love Forever and Ever and it is forever on my “Re-Watch” list along with the scriptwriter’s extension (since it’s not a part of the original canon, ergo, “extension”), One and Only ❤️

There have been more times than not wherein I’d be super connected to a drama and absolutely love and adore it, but would feel like I’m literally the only one who loves and adores the drama. Then there would be many a times that drama pairings, and drama castings, and even the dramas themselves which receive raving reviews and so much love on DB —and elsewhere—but I wouldn’t connect with it at all. Likewise, there have been drama pairings that I’d feel nothing about and drama castings that I see receive so much love but in my head, I’m thinking, “This feels off and this character has been miscast to me”. The most recent example of this sort of feeling of miscast for me has actually been for Tan Jian Ci in Lost You Forever — from the beginning of Season 1 until the end of Season 2, I’d always felt that the character/role he portrayed could have gone to another actor. Not to say that Tan Jian Ci’s acting out of that character was bad, just that I could picture someone else portraying it

@nessa I have to admit - I'm pretty critical with books, far more than movies/dramas because those at least can be salvaged somewhat by good acting/directing etc even when plot is meh. But novels? Nope, sorry, nothing can save a bad text in my eyes, not even decades of huge love for the author!

C-novels are still a relatively new genre to me - I think I've yet to break even 100 titles (very embarrassing number for a professional bookworm and speed-reader like myself), and most of them had to be dropped anyway because I deemed them not worthy of completing. In fact, some of them were so bad that I genuinely believe the scriptwriters who adapted them later into dramas made some serious improvements here and there... The opposite is more common, though. Guess I'm lucky to not have a favorite c-novel yet - I seriously doubt I'd love what it would be eventually adapted into))) But that day will probably come soon, and I'm dreading it^^

Tong Hua is not a bad writer per se, I'll give her that. But she has a HUGE thing for 2 tropes I despise - "angst for the sake of angst" and "ridiculously big reverse harem". Me and her just aren't meant to be lol. Seriously doubt anything will ever prompt me to watch LYF, but I've heard things about that novel and how widely beloved that particular character was way before adaptation happened... Almost pity TJC, it's never easy to manage such a sky high expectations. Who did you think would've been a better fit tho? I feel like cdrama castings are always at disadvantage since the start because no living human can match those impossibly perfect descriptions from novels lmao...

I grew up up reading my dad’s collection of wuxia novels and I absolutely loved the memories and experiences of reading them (many were from the Wang Fei Hong series and the Legend of the Condor Heroes series because my dad is a martial arts practicion — yes, I am super excited for Xiao Zhan’s upcoming movie based on the latter, even though there’s been an over abundance of drama and movie adaptations of said series). It’s from reading the Chinese books of my childhood that cultivated my love for books and which made me into a bookworm as I grew up and why I am still one to this day— maybe even why I grew up being an advanced reader when I transitioned to reading English literature, or so my teachers always told me lol 😊 However, if someone were to ask me if I have a favourite, I don’t think I would be able to give an answer— I think what stuck with me more was the moments and the memories of reading the wuxia books, not necessarily the books themselves, especially when I slowly began to read more and more English material as I grew older.

Out of the many Cdrama adaptations of C-novels out there, I’ve only been able to get my hands on one C-novel in the original Chinese text— the actual hard copy novel, actually 😊 — and that is The Oath of Love:
I like what the drama did overall in it’s adaptation, but there are definitely some things I wished wasn’t changed—mostly because I didn’t see anything wrong with it in the novel and don’t under why the thing was changed for the drama adaptation— but the nuances of the OG novel are translated onto the screen quite well, actually.

For other drama adaptations of C-novels, I hope to one day be able to find— and get my hands on— the actual novels in Chinese, but for now, I will have to live with online English fan translations and hope for a good reading experience 😬😅 Though I am weary, I am still thankful for such online English fan translations, else there would be no accessibility to the novels at all, and that is more tragic to me than anything.

For official English translations of C-novels that have been done and are now sold in English bookstores (e.g. Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation a.k.a. “The Untamed”, Stars of Chaos a.k.a. “Sha Po Lang”… just to name a few), the publishing company/publishing houses need to find better translators and editors, imho. We can’t keep giving chances and waiting for 2nd or 3rd editions to come out and hope that the edits and translations are better— they just need to do better so that the 1st edition is already its best and not do dumb dumb unexplained things like omitting chunks from the original version…

I have only watched Esther Yu and Zhang Ling He in Love between Fairy and Devil.
In fact I decided to watch A Journey to love instead of My Journey to You because I preferred the story of the first one, and also the actors.

Ahhh, that was Wang He Di in Fairy. It's the only drama I've seen him in but I thought he was terrific. I'm really looking forward to his upcoming Guardians of the Dafeng, which is releasing imminently. I love all 3 of the dramas you mentioned! 😀

@zindigo

I don't remember his name in Love between Fairy and Devil but I always call him "Frozen" because of his looks 😅
He was SML.

Iron Family: I agree with Cha Rim, Da Rim. You don't like TU. He's your oppa as in bro, and you know it.
I mean, if you really do like him, you have a strange way of showing it.
Hitting him to get him to like you? No wonder no one takes you seriously, bestie.
Light Shop (EP2): the electricity bill most be quite heavy... This has a plot, right?
Family Matters: how can I wait a whole week???
PS. I feel like this would be Justitia's favorite show of year.
When the Phone Rings: I don't see enough people talking about how adorable the SFL is. She deserves more love. She's so cute and harmless.
Love Your Enemy (dropped): I don't know why they chose to recycle the worst tropes of the 2010's (with both second leads), but what I dislike the most is that we didn't even get to see any friendship between the girls because it was so damn obvious the SFL is more of a plot device than a character who's part of the Ji Wons lives. She really ruined the only thing I liked about this (the flashbacks).

BTW, why isn't he getting a restriction order? She's so creepy.
Under the Gun (binge): Se Young is one of the coolest FLs of the year, and this couple is one of the cutest and most realistic ones too.
Trunk (dropped): I just don't care about these characters.
Lady Ok: let's not get too attached to ANYONE, guys. T.T
Anyway, I love uri Gudeoki and I hope she gets to reunite with her dad and her hubby too... But not before she kicks some noble ass and puts those horrible people in their place.
Sorry Not Sorry: kids, this is why we need to learn how to mind our own business, or at least not make assumptions.
The fact that Ji Song feels the need to hide herself and lie during simple social interactions with strangers is sad. She should feel safe to be herself and speak the truth.
I love her nephew and dongsaeng btw.
Savvy Class 101 (dropped): if you want to be popular you should NOT blackmail people and invade their privacy, girl.

Exactly! She fell for him and did something about it as soon as she realized it. But she wasn't annoyingly pushy or anything.
She was awesome.

I'm back to watching KDramas after really really long.. and now it's all I'm doing. I'm averaging 3 days per show.

Be Melodramatic- I really loved this slice of life drama. It had some good humorous scenes like Jin-joo playing the guitar to annoy the director, the whispering scene and each and every PPL scene. Also Shampoo Scent in the Flowers is such a cute song. Han-joo was my favourite- such an awesome character- competent, wise and taking the no drama route! I only wasn't too fond of the stories of some side characters like the senior writer and Han-joo's colleague's girlfriends- felt like too much time was spent on them. I'll also remember this drama for all the fried chicken- actually the drama was one of the most PPL heavy I have seen.

Spice Up Our Love- Watched it for the easy bean. I wasn't so thrilled with No Gain No Love but this was actually really fun! I felt her spicy scenes were better with the secretary in the books.. Fok-yu's intro as the novel lead brought the vibe down. It was nicely meshed with the original story- the extra bounce while he was taking her to the hospital in the dream might have been the same as when he was taking her to the hospital in the original show..also the trauma about her father. I enjoyed it!

Light Shop- I want to do some live watching this year, and this seems the most interesting of the current lot. 2 episodes down- it is scary good so far! Probably shouldn't be watching it at night!

Business Proposal - This drama is still so popular on social media- I have succumbed to all the reels. It is drama crack after so long, both female leads are awesome. I am already in the final stretch of the drama and hoping it stays good.

Switch: A really nice drama filled with elaborate plans to cheat other cheaters. The FL is nice but a little bit boring – I would have liked her to see her cheat MLx2 back, at least once. Anyway, both the ML and the 2ML had loads of charm, and it didn’t hurt that they were played by the same guy. I am really surprised at googling him and finding how his image normally is. An emo-boyband boy with the near clichéed long black dyed forehead lock of hair! Anyway, even if I had a better ending for everybody ready in my mind (Prosecutor moves to the country side with congirl, she becomes a writer, he makes tea for her and watches his health. Conman continues his life with a borrowed name and lots of small illegalities with virtuous prosecutie, and they have little proseconlings) , … apart from my ending being superior to the actual one, it was a fine show.
Iron Family: One thing that happened in the last episode that was a great relief was that ML Kangjo and his mother independantly both told the Unfairman off. Though Kangju got mad about the wrong thing, namely that someone had helped 2ML Tae-ung off the hook by proving he could not have been the on snitching on Kangju. When he heard it was FL Da-rim, he got mad at her though not for long.
Brewing love: This seemed almost like it would be the last episode. Everything was beginning to really look up and then, what happened? Can it please end well?
Six Hours of Martial Law in South Korea: This Horror Comedy was a bit too scary for my taste, though the absurdness of it and it’s quick ending (big fan of the quick ending) made it seem like a joke. I really do not want to see a season 2 of this, but I hope for a short spin-off, a court drama-comedy called DITCH: Prez and Friends Indicted
***
Not a K-drama:
Tidsrejsen 2 (The Time Travel 2) I have talked about a calendar Christmas Drama earlier, that had a really disappointing ending. Well, after about ten years. The second season is here, the former protagonist now playing an important side character. (I am really happy to see that actress back on the screen. She was never the disappointment, nor is she now). The super disappointing ending of the first calendar drama can be corrected now, and I hope against hope that it will happen – it’s the same writers.

Yeah, definitely don't want a sequel to the horror comedy, although the legislature's reluctance to cancel this season means we'll likely get an unwanted extension, and we all know those never make the plot better.

I am so disappointed. I thought we were guaranteed a cancellation. But I guess they thought that would hand the slot to a competitor. It's all about their own ratings.

I thought it was only two hours of Martial Law. On the positive side: The military did NOT stop the National Assembly from meeting to lift it. Plus, one of the ROK president's most important allies has turned on him and I believe is supporting the well-deserved impeachment.

Meanwhile the rebels who are supported by Turkey are steadily gaining ground in Syria and will soon (probably) topple the evil regime of Bashir Assad. While I am not overly fond of the current leader of Turkey this is still an improvement- and I think the markets agree with me as the price of oil has actually fallen on this news.

I don't know about you, but my favorite Korean drama is 윤석열 failing to institute Martial law. I'm glad that the SK incel president is being kicked to the curb About time. I mean after the Itaewon crush incident, I wanted him booted. But it looks like they are going to boot him.

I hope we get a replay of this in a Korean drama???

To be clear, I am Korean... and I'm aware of all of the other crap he pulled before this so the "they" meaning the National Assembly, but damn. Korea has traded children for handbags before (referring to the proxy system--those women who traded kidnapped babies for refrigerators and handbags were evil). But the entire government for a handbag is wild and then The Pres to use the accusations against his wife to declare Martial Law? Even wilder.

It is good to get perspective on this from someone who is in a far better position than myself to follow what has happened. To me the imposition of Martial Law for political purposes was more than just bizarre but simply totally abhorrent. I can only hope that the National Assembly conducts the impeachment quickly and removes him as soon as possible.

Kinda a jaded opinion, from another country's citizen, but it looked like a failing politico's gimmick gone wrong where the utterly serious outcome could have roped in the military to commit violence against their own neighbors and fellow citizens. Meanwhile the upside was media thumbing their nose at the government's martial law order to take over all communications (that is hugely dangerous); and the elected officials manned (sorry women) up and for once, took their oath of office seriously.

He's done for no matter what; he's lost the voting public and his administration can no longer effectively govern.

What a holy mess, but lord Korean citizens should be proud this week. Stay on alert, it ain't over.

He's trying to white knight the situation since she did insider trading, supposedly too, but is she that good that he needs to protect her to this extent and risk jail time himself?

BTW, if you want entertainment, watching the opposition leader film himself climbing a fence is extra wild. Koreans are cheering him on in the chat too.
