Love Your Enemy: Episodes 5-6

It’s cohabitation o’clock, and it’s time for hijinks! As our enemies-who-aren’t-lovers-yet spend time under the same roof, they unearth and unlock fond memories. But it’s up to them to face those memories, because ready or not, the result of their bet is out!

EPISODES 5-6

Despite Yoon-ji’s objections, Seok-ji moves into the school residence alongside Moon-soo. I’m slightly disappointed that we didn’t get a scene of these three musketeers plus grandpa wearing the matching tracksuits, but the show does entertain us with Seok-ji and Moon-soo’s petty attempts to be the ideal housemate/grandson-in-law. Cooking, cleaning, laundry… before you name it, Seok-ji and Moon-soo have done it. I was a little surprised Seok-ji didn’t destroy anything while on his Mr. Fix-it spree, but then I remembered he’s got a background in construction. Background in cooking, not so much. I can’t believe this man dumped a ladle of sugar in his stew. *Facepalm*

Of course Grandpa Yoon enjoys every bit of the housemate drama, and Soo-ah jokingly asks to move in so she can witness the drama for herself. On the other hand, Yoon-ji and Ji-hye do NOT enjoy the current state of things for their individual obvious reasons. Ji-hye overhears our Ji-wons bickering at school over the housemate situation, and she sees Seok-ji smiling to himself afterwards like a loon. “They’re at it again with their antics,” she mutters to herself, and I wonder what evil lies she’s going to concoct to separate them this time.

Love Your Enemy: Episodes 5-6

Grandpa Yoon’s attempt to rally the townspeople to oppose Daddy Seok’s proposed golf course fails due to their assumption that the land prices will go up after the golf course is built. A happy Daddy Seok gathers the people for premium beef and beer, and Grandpa Yoon storms the restaurant. To his credit, he reins in his anger — until a drunk Seok berates Yoon-ji for ending up as a teacher after acting all high and mighty in her younger days. Grandpa Yoon responds with a “keep my granddaughter’s name out of your mouth” slap, and the men get into a brawl. Aigoo.

After separating their feuding fatherly figures, Seok-ji and Yoon-ji pick up from where the fathers left off. Accusations fly, arguments follow, and hurtful words are hurled back and forth. Honestly, I want to put these two in a timeout because it’s like they’re both talking to a wall. They’re battling with the pain that each person thinks the other inflicted on them, but rather than communicate that hurt, they’re just going around in circles and masking the pain in the unkind words they spew at each other. How does Ji-hye sleep at night knowing that her one act of jealousy has caused this much damage?

Unsurprisingly, Ji-hye sleeps just fine as one would expect from a person whose skincare routine is jealousy and wickedness. In fact, it is with great delight that she receives the news that Seok-ji and Yoon-ji were involved in yet another argument. Ji-hye tries to take advantage of the sour relationship to pit Yoon-ji against Seok-ji, but it doesn’t work. No matter how “petty, stupid, selfish and rude” Yoon-ji finds Seok-ji, she knows he’s not a liar as Ji-hye would have her believe. Ji-hye then changes tactics and invites herself to the school residence. But nothing says “I’m visiting to drink with Yoon-ji” better than sneaking into Seok-ji’s empty room to feed her delulu imaginations. Tsk. Having unrequited feelings suck, but she doesn’t have to be so pathetic about it.

Hours later, Ji-hye wakes up from a drunken nap and gets set to go home. But on walking into the living room, Ji-hye and Yoon-ji get the fright of their lives when they see a pair of legs hanging out of the ceiling. But it’s just Seok-ji and his curiosity that led him to the attic — where he finds Yoon-ji’s box of memories containing their pictures from high school among other things. Aww. Seok-ji climbs back down with the box, and Yoon-ji’s head alarms go off. She rushes to grab the box, but she trips and grabs his pants instead… and London Bridge comes crashing down. Pfft! I will never be tired of this falling gag.

Love Your Enemy: Episodes 5-6

After ending up with his pants down in front of the whole house, Seok-ji’s woe-meter climbs when the thermostat in his room stops working. He gets a nasty cold which develops into a fever, and Yoon-ji has to nurse him at night. In his delirium, Seok-ji kisses Yoon-ji, but he wakes up the next morning without the fever — and the memories of the preceding night. Ha! How dare he? Yoon-ji is a little awkward around Seok-ji now, and he notices. But as expected, she denies it because she can’t possibly tell him that she’s all flustered and bothered and disappointed and annoyed because he kissed her and forgot all about it. Heh.

Speaking of which, Ji-hye tells Seok-ji to forget about her confession and that they should go back to being just friends. But despite her attempt to hitch a solo ride to Seoul — for a teachers’ conference — with her “friend,” Mr. Friend insists on giving Yoon-ji and Moon-soo a ride. Seok-ji also offers to drive his housemates back home after the conference, but when he calls Yoon-ji to see if they’re done, Ji-hye rejects the call, turns off the phone and shoves it into her handbag — all without Yoon-ji’s knowledge. Sigh. Some things never change.

Love Your Enemy: Episodes 5-6

Yoon-ji ends up hanging out with Moon-soo after Ji-hye excuses herself, and we get a cameo of 10CM busking to his OST in the background as Moon-soo confesses to Yoon-ji. It’s been a few years since their hospital rooftop incident, and Moon-soo says it’s not like he has been thinking about Yoon-ji all the while. But the moment he saw her again, he realized that he’d missed her for a long time. These words hit Yoon-ji, and she realizes that she feels the same way… about Seok-ji.

On their return to town, Yoon-ji tries to expel her thoughts and feelings by running laps around the school field, while Seok-ji dwells on Yoon-ji’s non-responses to his call — which painfully reminds him of her unreachable line 18 years ago. Oh, Ji-hye, you will crumble for this! The week ends with our Ji-wons getting into another round of bickering, and Yoon-ji asks why Seok-ji wants to date her via their bet. “So I can dump you,” he replies, and he’s talking about payback for the Ji-hye-induced misunderstanding.

But as far as Yoon-ji is concerned, neither dating nor dumping will happen because the lilacs won’t bl… — oh dear! The words are barely out of her mouth when they come face to face with the object of their bet — which now stands majestic in full bloom! Yoon-ji is shocked, and Seok-ji is doubly shocked because lilacs aside, his memory of their kiss has also returned. Ohlala!

Love Your Enemy: Episodes 5-6

We are making progress, guys! Our younger Ji-wons barely had screen time this week, and while I miss them, this is good for plot development. I was getting tired of adult Ji-wons’ incessant bickering, and it’s nice to have their dating era to look forward to next week. I mean, they have to abide by the bet, right?

In other news, there’s this dude in the plot, JI KYUNG-HOON (Lee Seung-joon), and he’s like an administrative staff at Dokmok or something. Anyway, on the surface he’s very loyal to Grandpa Yoon — to the point of addressing him as “father” — but I’m not buying it. Kyung-hoon is suspicious, and I won’t be surprised if he had something to do with Yoon-ji’s parents’ accident and the embezzlement case that her dad was accused of.

There’s also the health teacher/school nurse, HONG TAE-OH (Kim Jae-chul), and his suspicious relationship with a female student. My gut says that she’s his kid or niece or something, and maybe he’s wary of romantic relationships because he doesn’t want to burden anyone with stepmom duties. The girl has to be family, right? Because the other possibility is so out of place in a show like this. Anyway, the show seems to be setting up something between him and Soo-ah, so, we shall see.

Oh man. Ji-hye makes me want to throw things at the screen. Everyone keep your phones close to you!! I don’t get her. What kind of woman likes a man when you see the man obsessed with this one woman all his life. How are you not put off by this and actually want that said man!?? For what??

The hurt of Seok Ji Won is so deep that he thinks dumping her will give him the closure. I wasn’t expecting him to say that he wants to date and dump her.

When the show is wacky it’s so funny. It was so embarrassingly funny to see the tracksuit being pulled down scene. It’s ridiculous but somehow makes me laugh.

The show could have been titled ‘When the lilacs bloom’.

Yeah, I too think the teacher is the father of the class rep or something like that. And the secretary is very suspicious ( a man with a whiskey glass starting at a window gotta be a scheming villain right?)

I actually like Seok Ji eon’s family dynamics. Especially the way his mother teases her husband. He is petty and the family knows it and teases him but still cares for him. So I do feel he will come around when the time is right.

Wow, can you really just buy a Kelly like that in SK? He is going to get a sticker shock seeing the price :)

I am so excited for the dating era. Bring it on show!!

I don't think he really meant the "dating to dump you" thing as she'd have to care about dating him again for that to work, and moreover he's given away the game. He was just being a petulant child letting "us" know that she hurt him vewwwy much that night when he totally misunderstood that she wasn't home waiting for him--she was keeping another promise they'd made to one another that he totally forgot.

I hope we get just as many extended flashbacks to her sitting on top of N Seoul Tower waiting for him that night!!!

We got a lot of her flashbacks in week 1! I definitely thought at first that Seok-ji coming in at the end (and her touching his cheek) was reality until they showed us the more extended version later.

I did wonder if he forgot that promise or if he just didn’t listen to the weather that day. It wasn’t really snowing in their hometown, so it’s possible he legit didn’t know about it.

Nowhere near as many flashbacks as we've had of our sad 도련님 with his sad red nobbly scarf, a garment that IS DEFINITELY SHOWING BACK UP IN EPISODE 11.

I remember how long it took me to make my first scarf and I will be DEVASTATED if it does not show itself again!

"a man with a whiskey glass starting at a window gotta be a scheming villain right?"

Dude has been sus from day 1, but the whiskey scene is what cemented his villain status for me.

I'd like to be proven wrong, though.

"Ji-hye makes me want to throw things at the screen."

Having a second female lead as a prime cause of the OTP misunderstanding is such an overused plot device (also a symptom of a lazy writing), that I thought that k-drama has retired it a loooong time ago.

I was wrong.

@unit, yessss, but isn't their dating also going to consist of just more bickering, only this time like in an angry contract marriage or something?

I hope they get through that fast (like less than one more episode of sneering) and start with the adorable falling back in love part. I guess the mountain's gonna bring them together. Love Mountain.

PS: I almost wrote in week one that I was glad that Lee Seung-joon was finally gonna get to play a nice guy, but I didn't because, well, I didn't want to sound like an ass...and here we are. Gah, to that too.

But at least they'd be "dating." It's a step up from their endless I-hate-you-but-not-really-hate-you bickering.

I agree, @unit I think the student has to be a relation of his. I was really worried they were going to make that relationship creepy, and it could still go that way, but I hope not.

I am low-key enjoying how hilariously evil Ji-hye is hahaha! Just me? That’s fine, sometimes there is just something nice to me about a ridiculous comic book-style villain. I still feel some kind of way about this drama as a whole, but I was extremely entertained this week (despite the lack of teens) so I’m sticking with it. Ju Ji-hoon looks like he’s having a blast, and that’s enough to make up for my annoyance with Jung Yu-mi’s overused lip curl any day. I laughed so hard when I saw the lilac blooming and I’m glad the bet is turning out the opposite way this time. I’m also glad that we got some indications that Yoon-ji still likes Seok-ji as well - it was looking a little one-sided there for a minute.

And finally, I was absolutely taken in by Seok-ji looking completely tragic right before the kiss. Please can we resolve some of this misunderstanding soon?!

I really liked the scene of the supermarket because the leads found their natural relationship back. He knew what she liked and took a lot of them for her.

But sadly it didn't last. And they became way more childish...

I think it's sad because the FL is just this bitter and angry woman. They didn't really give her anything else that doesn't imply the ML.

I have the feeling that Ji Kyung Hoon is playing both grandfather and father, I don't trust him.

I liked the comment of the nurse to Soo-A about never taking things seriously. Now, what is his relationship with the student... I really hope they're from the same family.

Ji-Hye won the price of the most pathetic woman in the world...

Ji-Hye is the sort of frenemy that needs to get BIG CONSEQUENCES for her actions. I have zero time and sympathy for two-faced folks like her. They are the absolute worst!

Let's just get this romance rolling along. ML needs to stop behaving like a petulant teen and start courting FL... and both ML and FL need to really starting communicating and putting the pieces together so that...

... Ji-Hye will be faced with CONSEQUENCES.

And on another note: it looks like Ji-Hoon Oppa doesn't skip leg day at the gym ROFL!

The last two episodes were quite frustrating. You'd think the script had been in the drawer for several years, so many tropes I didn't want to see again, e.g. the jealous and scheming SFL or miscommunication that dragged on for years.
I could still overlook it if the issues were at least quickly wrapped up, but as it stands, it will take several more episodes for ML and FL to talk openly with each other and realise it was all just a big misunderstanding.

As this show keeps pointing out to us, there's a thin line between love and hate, and I've now officially crossed the line, and am hate watching this show. To me, this show exemplifies what's wrong with kdrama rom-coms this year--that is, exaggerating one aspect of the comedy, often male immaturity--in this one, couple immaturity, in directions that undermine the romance.

Like most of the shows, it has the germ of a good idea, and a couple of okay first episodes, and decent, in this one, excellent, actors playing the leads--both young and old. (well, except for the 2ml, but he's supposed to be playing this simpleminded innocently lovable young man, which he's doing fine.)

But its totally squandered those things by pounding away at the "comical" premise (in this case, a pair of 40 year olds acting like 13 year olds -- less mature than their younger selves) until I just get sick of it, and start actually hoping that the show ends in Heartbeat fashion: in a bittersweet way, with a stupid, meaningless "lesson" such as "there are some relationships just not meant to be and therefore one person must die."

The last episode, which should, after the infectious kiss, have been a set of progressively less hostile encounters between the leads--perhaps based on the gag of love being like the flu-- instead spent all its time building up how great the 2ml was, and the chemistry between the FL and the 2ml. This episode proved they are meant for each other, with that exciting basketball game between them, which had great symbolic import, so much so that I had no idea why they even included it, except to show that both were terrible at basketball. Of course, he's 15 years younger than she is, but that could be an advantage, and lead to a more satisfying physical relationship for the FL, especially as they age, as long as they don't play basketball in bed.

But I guess we are supposed to take her rejection of his confession as final. (And why did he love her anyway--because of one encounter in the hospital 10 years ago?)

So, now we have the main relationship to look forward to, based on sparkling, witty dialogue--a set of repeated "I hate yous"--and a simple failure to say--"what happened 12 years ago? I waited for you" which EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN REAL LIFE WOULD HAVE SAID BY NOW.

I totally understand that we are supposed to accept and find amusing the fantasy that they both were so in love with each other and so devastated by their miscommunication breakup that they never had a satisfactory relationship with any other person in the last 10 years and remain obsessed with each other.

But what ruins this show for me is that that I could imagine several alternative ways they could have done a comic, modern day "what if Romeo and Juliet had not killed themselves, but instead mistakenly separated" theme, while taking advantage of these two charismatic actors--without making them both so irritating to watch.

"(And why did he love her anyway--because of one encounter in the hospital 10 years ago?)"

This is such a thing that's been used in romance dramas lately. The ML fell for the FL because he saw her looking pretty (usually lit by natural light, or sometimes laughing in the rain) and that's that. It's hard for me to get invested in a romance when feelings are based on something like that and nothing else.

I am really enjoying this drama. I love the mix of romance, angst, pettiness, and laugh-out-loud funny moments. (The pants!) My husband (not generally a fan of kdramas) was watching over my shoulder and got hooked. I could do without Ji-Hye, but I suppose we need something keeping them apart.

I think she is his daughter or niece too.

There are more denied attraction and mixed signals from the two. SFL still up to her old tricks and I honestly want her transferred somewhere far away.
I enjoyed the cohabitation hijinks with ML and SML trying to one-up the other. Thay embarrasing pants scene with poor Seok Jiwon. I wouldve preferred Ji Hye not to have witnessee that.
Honestly i don't understand Ji Hye. We all know our FL only has her eye on a certain someone. She knows it too and also know that the same is true for Seok Ji won. Why is she still pursuing him?

Besides her, I hope the two Jiwons be more honest with each other. They are not really fooling anyone.

“Why is she still pursuing him?”
I think, sadly, she is still pursuing him because she is a SFL and so far her entire role has been to be vaguely suspicious, obsessed with the ML to the point of actual stalker behavior, and develop misunderstandings between the leads. I’m weirdly enjoying her antics, but kind of in the same way I enjoy a good Left State Minister cackle. Maybe someday a SFL will break out of this fate (I’m sure there’s a webtoon about this somewhere), but she seems pretty firmly entrenched, poor thing.

And she made no effort to get close to him all these years. I am sure she could have contacted him if she wanted to.
To me it sounds more like she doesn’t want Ji won to have someone nice by her side. She knows he is too good and doesn’t want her friend to have that perfect life.
The way she is pushing the second ML with Ji won is so cringe.

Thank you for the recap. 💘🤸‍♀️🌁

Tbh I liked this week better because of the limited time given to the younger version of the leads. However cute Hong Min-gi is the extended cameos are definitely hurting this story. Hopefully we can stay in the present for more extended periods and get to see the Ji-won x 2 dating era 2.0.

How does Ji-hye sleep at night knowing that her one act of jealousy has caused this much damage?

Huh, apparently by doing more of the same. 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️ I do hope this time she gets caught and preferably thrown out of the school. She is like a mini version of the 2FL in Marry My Husband and that is not a compliment. 🤪 The other sus character Ji Kyung-hoon also deserves his comeuppance but apparently we will have to wait for a few more weeks to unveil and kick out the evil brigade.

There must be more to the 2ndFL sabotaging her bff. I mean I hope there is. She seemed clearly shaken with guilt of what she’d just done to her friend yet again. The funny thing is though, the two people she’s trying to tear apart are at this moment living under the same roof, they will meet at the house anyway, so her phone thievery was really for nothing. This couple also thrives on bickering and she’s giving them more excuses to fight over haha. If she never meddled back in the past they might have even separated on their own in time, but thanks to her they're as obsessed with each other as ever.

It is ridiculously entertaining to see that the chairman of a school is in a dating bet with one of his teachers and the whole student body is in on it watching gleefully from the sidelines. How insane that would be in real life. This is why I love kdramas though. I’m also closing my eyes to the fact that the adult Ji-wons basically know nothing about each other other than their HS memories. Who are these people after 18 years? Who cares, right?

That could have been guilt, but I wasn’t as sure. She didn’t just decline the call and delete the record, she legitimately stole Yoon-ji’s phone, so I interpreted her hesitation as a realization of how far she’d just gone, not really regret for her actions. The show might humanize/redeem her yet, but for now I’m having more fun thinking the worst of her 😂

This week was very watchable. I am glad I stuck with the show. The problem with the first two weeks was that there was very little action. It was mostly setting up the main characters and their backstory with a lot of bickering. This week they fixed the balance of the show with a lot more side characters getting screen time and a lot of interwoven storylines about friendship and unspoken feelings.

I also don't mind the fact that we started the week with a cliched fight between the two male leads. Maybe it was because it was comforting and familiar. But, I think it was because I was so bored the last few weeks that I was finally getting some entertainment.
