I think this drama tried to be too many things at the same time.

I don't see what the investigation brought the story. We didn't really learn informations with the interrogation, it wasn't in a linary timeline, so it was more confusing. It's the same for Eom Tae-Seong, I think there were already enough weird people, the story didn't need a stalker.

There were a lot of characters for a drama with 8 episodes and each with a lot of trauma to address.

The couple was great, it was nice to see them getting closer, becoming a wife-husband little by little.

The house was a character itself. It reminded me Hobbit's house without the charm and the hospitality. The palet of colors was in the blues and greys with the chandelier that was kinda a character too. I think it could have been the Chandelier instead The Trunk (but we would have missed the part when every character has baggage from the past).

The casting was great. There were many familiar faces! The production focused on Seo Hyun-Jin and Gong Yoo but Jung Yun-Ha had a lot of scenes too.

PS : who thought Seo Hyun-Jin's haircut was a good idea?

I am with you re Seo Hyun-jin's hairstyle - why did they do the dirty on our girl like that! It reminded me of an Australian mullet - sometimes referred to as 'business in the front, party in the back' - but the back of hers looked like a party on acid, or cut by a 5 year old! 🤣

Random notes 4 eps in... I'm finding it a little try-hard, but still strangely so very gripping. Haven't felt the urge to skip scenes, or way to the end at all, so that's saying something.

I'm finding the acting strictly okay, a bit one-note, and not really feeling chemistry between the leads because they're playing such closed-off characters... Though I love their little dates, and their smiles leaking through. I do hope hope they can work through their immense baggage, literally, of trauma, and just lead simple lives, regardless of together or not.

Architecture is the new hot profession in Kdrama, it seems, after law and medicine! That house, if it exists, is gorgeous from the outside, but mausoleum-like from inside (if it exists and not CGI, which I think it is)

But I have to say, much of it my being absolutely hypnotised by this series, is because of the INCREDIBLE background music and sound design. It's up there with, if not better, than Atypical Family, for me. This is a show which has to be watched (or just listened to) with headphones. The bgm has almost an ASMR quality at times, each cut, scrape and rustle amplified, the electronic sounds giving it another layer of eeriness. Kudos to the sound team- they deserve awards.
The cinematography and locales are all absolutely gorgeous too. Though her lying down in the kayak like that gives me anxiety, given how bottomless that lake actually looks from the air! The production design is top-notch, and I love how the motif on the trunk is re-echoed through the shots of the fish.

As to the actual story, I'm yet to work out anyone's motivations completely... Everyone has theirs on the surface of things, but I'm yet to figure out how they all connect. At this point, a large part is still untold, and I'm waiting to see how it all pans out... The suspicious neighbour, the stalker, the missing fiance... Hope all these loose ends in In Ji's life get resolved somehow, of course, the mysterious trunk being the key to everything.

Will update once I finish the series.

Was it perfect? No, but it was still a very satisfying watch for me. Eight episodes was just right and I didn’t fast forward once. I enjoyed the cinematography and direction as well as all of the performances. Gong Yoo was terrific, but the show, in my opinion, truly belongs to Seo Hyun Jin. Her portrayal of In Ji was stellar and she had me slow clapping during several scenes.

Having finished this drama an hour ago, I'm sitting here thinking about who actually killed that guy and I'm quite literally shaking my head because I can't believe that that was what the writer came up with as a "good, well-motivated plot point."

But, when all is said and done, at the end of these 8 hours, all I think I'm left with is the following thought:

Where's our Gong Yoo as cat dad drama???

(1) I still loved oppa Gong Yoo throughout this Kdrama so much while I'm waiting for him in the next four weeks for the second season of Emmy award-winning Squid Game.
(2) Q: What's inside the trunk? (as revealed on ep8)
A: The baby's toys and baby's clothes
(3) The fictional October(?) 2026 timeskip during the final episode (ep8) was just a bit of happy ending.

I love it. Only half way through. I normally hate the 16 episode format, but this series is so addictive I wish it was the normal 16.
Two great actors playing Noh In-ji and Han Jeong-won. Especially Seo Hyun-jin. I care for what appears to be a deeply flawed/damaged person, but also able to have an inner warmth shine through.
I am seeing so many possibilities for how this series will go.
Can't wait for the end but wish there was more.

I actually liked this quite a bit. My husband got really sucked into it, too, and ended up watching the whole thing with me. It gave me Atypical Family vibes, and I LOVED Atypical Family. I liked a lot of the metaphors, although the baggage thing was a little too on the nose. I couldn't tell if the drama wanted me to like Seo-yeon or not, and I thought it spent way too much time with her. I could have used a bit more romance. I also am not a huge fan of open endings but at least it was happy-ish.

The main leads were phenomenal acting-wise. I've only ever seen the FL play really overly emotional women (like Another Miss Oh) so it was interesting seeing her be the opposite.

Also, I really want that trunk! It is GORGEOUS.

That trunk made me think of The Wilds (teen girls stranded after a plane crash) because in that one of the richer kids has a v. expensive suitcase that is waterproof and floats, so they have access to some clothes etc.

So, yes The Trunk was not only gorgeous but could probably save your life in an emergency as well :)

Update after ep 4: Wow, by the end, I was caught up by this show, hook, line, and sinker! So so good. What an absolute pleasure to see two mature leads falling in love, healing, and finding their peace. It was a visual and aural treat for the senses throughout.

All the actors were really good, the second couple as well. I want to know though, how the cops cottoned-onto the 2ML. I also felt the resolution between the ML and 2FL, was too easy-going. But ok, maybe he just wanted to move on and be done with, but how does he do that with someone who has consistently undermined him, I don't know. The only one that really irritated me was the character of the business partner's wife- nothing but a Greek chorus, expositioning the action onscreen into simplistic oh my! moments.

Yes, the story was a bit all over the place, and I really didn't see the point of calling it Trunk, because what was that cop-out at the end?! But what mattered to me finally was the journey they took me on. It should have been called The Eye or something, because watching and being watched, were to me the central themes of the show, apart from the literal baggage that each character carried with them, and finally divested. Even the production design took the eye thing so literally, like the oculus-like skylight in the house, framed by the sweeping stairs to look like an eye, or the eye motifs on the trunk itself. There was even an eye-shaped clock in the MLs house.

I absolutely LOVED Gong Yoo in this, never having watched a show of his fully (recently dropped Goblin yet again). His smiles when he is with Seo Hyun Jin are a thing of beauty... I could literally see and feel the peace emanating from him, when they were together. SHJ is fantastic as usual- I began watching for her only, and she didn't fail me.

And even though the ending was open, it was so cute... the way he hesitantly asked if she waited for the end credits, and her admitting she watched the film only for that! I just know that they're going to be hanging around that vet's clinic/ coffee shop the very next day, or going to the theatre again, just to run into each other accidentally on purpose for the second time!!

Yet again, rooting for Awards for the sound design and music teams... They elevated the story beyond banal, to something that became one of the best dramas this year for me, on my rewatch list for sure.

Yes imo, Gong Yoo was superb and the main reason I eagerly awaited for The Trunk to drop on Netflix. Now he is infrequently seen in TV series but I try to see all of his stuff, including films.

I had mixed feelings about Goblin but stuck with it, primarily because the 4 leads were so good (a super Grim Reaper). My favourite Gong Yoo series is Coffee Prince (from 2027), though I understand some people are not so keen on it. The CP ML progresses through various stages of emotions, which I cannot imagine being so brilliantly portrayed by anyone other than Gong Yoo. IMO, no one can do humour combined with tortured souls better than Gong Yoo (though of course Ji Chang-wook comes close in Healer).

I have not verified it, but my guess is that the horror film watched by In-ji and Jeong-won is Gong Woo’s Train to Busan. I am less sure about their second film, but maybe the opening is from Goblin, though I would have thought they would have done something highlighting SHJ — Another Miss Oh is a fan favourite.

And lastly, the Trunk tango kiss reminded me of the Goblin’s kiss appearing late in that series. The Goblin’s kiss was explosive, driven by his mostly physically-repressed love (probably because she was only 19!). Jeong-wu’s kiss was also explosive, but possibly from his repressed mostly-physical desire for a woman. What a fine actor he is, to bring out the subtle differences.

This was excellent.
Every aspect complimented each other so it made for a great whole.
You could see how much thought and work had gone into the show which elevates it above others.
The acting was sublime, it was like watching a masterclass.
It's really hard to go back to watching an "average Kdrama" because you can very clearly see what is missing.
Highly recommend it.

It had its moments: An unexpected tango lesson ending in an abrupt kiss. An all-out female cage fight inside a construction elevator. A chandelier growing monstrously large during a drug trip.

Then, there was Seo Hyun-jin’s taut performance, Jung Yun Ha’s desperate turn and Gong Yoo’s wounded character—all imprisoned inside an arresting, atmospheric set.

Yet, yet…in the end, I wanted our wonderful OTP to tango right out and into a better story. Because despite the visuals, performances and an intriguing beginning, the script ultimately failed to deliver. As when we learned of the underwhelming contents of the mysterious trunk, I found myself asking as the credits rolled, was this it, was this really all?

I watched this for Gong Yoo - of course! - and I was not disappointed. Atmospheric, and kept my attention. That house, it felt like Jung-Won was falling down a dark hole, literally and figuratively. Both leads were stellar in their roles. The scene that I felt most was Jung Won watching the video feed of his home. Are red scarves now required for all of Gong Yoo's partners? Maybe I should add one to my holiday wish list.

Yes, well-said. My favorite genres are emotional-tension ones but it is so welcome when their woeful characters float above it and share a nice moment -- red scarf and all.

The house was creatively unique but not one that I want to live in. You nailed it -- why would we want our home to be built around a big dark hole, even if it has an amazing chandelier?

I add my name to those who watched Trunk because of Gong Yoo. IMO, for a melodrama the plot was creative and well-played. Gong yoo and Seo Hun-jin are such professionals that I felt that I understood their characters and the emotional forces between them.

I appreciated that our bisexual runaway groom was not portrayed as a jerk (the usual Knorm for partner who dumps a lead character). I interpreted that our bisexual groom had loved her but felt suffocated by her (I really missed our wonderful Dramabeans recappers who would have enlightened me on plot points.)

From the start, first-wife Yun-ha engaged me as interesting villain. I was a bit unsure as to why she wanted Jeong-won to marry someone else (maybe I missed an explicit explanation). Perhaps a good reason is that she thought he would be so unhappy with In-ji (ill-suited, Yun-ha thought) that he would come to fully appreciate first wife, and thus he would not choose an unborn child over her.

As noted by others, Yu-han's husband being the murderer of creepy stalker seemed to have come out of nowhere. I blame Netflix for force-fitting the 8-episode format on Kdramas. Another couple of episodes could have laid the groundwork, building on husband's retribution for creepy guy having killed his security colleague.

Even if they have to be only 8 episodes, I hope Netflix keeps them coming !
