Drama viewership ratings for the week of November 18-24, 2024
by tccolb
It’s time to say hello to a fresh crop of new dramas this week and Parole Examiner Lee kicked things off with a very strong start, scoring weekday numbers that compete with the weekend premiere of both When the Phone Rings and Love Your Enemy. The latter in particular came in surprisingly low on Saturday, but thankfully made a big jump once Sunday came around. But there’s still a long journey ahead if they want to catch up with our Fiery Priest, who has been steadily climbing higher.

IRON FAMILY is still struggling in the ratings due to the ghosts of recent Weekenders past. It is in fact far superior and should be getting vastly higher ratings. This is a real shame for what has turned into probably the best Weekender since ONCE AGAIN or FATHER IS STRANGE. We are getting a really entertaining story and for many of us this is our favorite currently broadcasting show. It has humor, warmth (but also conflict, etc), mysteries and even some suspense. It has some truly likeable characters but also some that we can dislike but, at the same time are potentially redeemable. Even the bad guys whom other writers would make totally evil are not completely inhuman- they even gave our ML a place to sleep when he was rendered homeless. Their only vice is simple greed and nothing more. We have romances that are developing naturally and are not forced. Indeed, one is simply beginning to form at the halfway point of the story.
I know that Channel A does not reach as many people but MARRY YOU deserves more love.
I could say much the same about BREWING LOVE. Is PAROLE EXAMINER LEE really that much better?
Both episodes of FAMILY BY CHOICE were broadcast on the same day?
FACE ME obviously suffered as a result.
From the first episode to the second LOVE YOUR ENEMY had a spectacular jump. I have not started it yet but plan to- this is a good omen.
I was not planning on watching WHEN THE PHONE RINGS but given the ratings I may have to reconsider that.

@oldawyer,
Point 2. The problem/situation? with Channel A’s MARRY YOU (for me anyway) is that for US viewers the license went to Kocowa not Viki which in the past has licensed many Channel A dramas with CINDERELLA AT 2AM probably the most recent.
(If you have a few extra hours try to figure out the ownership structure of Kocowa.)
So now not only does Kocowa have a say if KBS and SBS and MBC dramas have US availability, Kocowa is directly licensing Channel A dramas (MARRY YOU for one) and JTBC dramas (LADY OK for one). Kocowa is now competing directly with Viki for licensing dramas for US availability similar to DramaFever back in the day and Disney+ now. A couple of years ago I dropped my Kocowa subscription because through Viki Plus many of the big three (KBS, SBS and MBC) dramas available on Kocowa where available on Viki. That is not the case case anymore.
Point 4. JTBC from the first airing has been airing 2 episodes of FAMILY BY CHOICE on Wednesdays.

Kocowa is throwing Viki a bone by allowing it to air: 2024 KBS DRAMA SPECIAL. Episodes will be available on a delayed basis.

This is great news as I love these shows and always have to search high and low to find them.

Is the issue the day and time the programmes are live as I wonder if people watch one of the shows live and one later and that accounts for differences between day one and day two of the same drama. I also wonder as we only see some of the shows that air in Korea if people are watching a variety show rather than the drama live.

While the real time ratings for IRON FAMILY may not be all that, it is having a positive impact. Both Keum Seo-rok and Kim Jung-hyun have had recent high profile casting news for future work.

Happy for both Phone rings and Love your enemy.
That’s a huge jump for LYE! I think this has potential to go higher.

Those are good premier ratings for both Love Your Enemy and When the Phone Rings.
Parole Examiner Lee also had great premier ratings for a Mon-Tue drama.

I wonder if there will be a change in the weekend drama ratings when Lady Ok and The trunk drop this weekend.
Love your enemy had a great opening weekend so it will be interesting to see if it can maintain it.
What a shame for the weekender faithful that when a decent one finally comes out the ratings are not encouraging other writers to bring back the elements that made weekenders a fun watch.

Can't wait to see how Lady Ok changes the ratings during the weekends. I am happy to see that dramas headed by veteran stars are doing rather well, especially Parole Examiner Lee, When The Phone Rings, Fiery Priest 2 and even Love Your Enemy. By the way, casting Jung Yu Mi and Ju Ji Hoon is a smart move to drive up the ratings for a romcom, especially during the weekend.
