Come Check-in at Hanyang guesthouse with Bae In-hyuk

From script readings to posters to teasers, lots of new promos have recently dropped for Channel A’s historical comedy Check-in Hanyang, showing us what it takes to work at the hottest guesthouse in Joseon.

The guesthouse Yongcheonru is described as the palace across the street from the palace. With its extravagant premises and top-notch amenities, it’s enough to put the actual king’s estate to shame. And for our newest guesthouse interns, Bae In-hyuk (The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract), Kim Ji-eun (Love Next Door), Jung Geon-joo (Bittersweet Hell), and DKZ’s Jaechan (My Sweet Mobster), it’s the dream job.

As our heroine Hong Deok-soo (Kim Ji-eun) cross-dresses as a man to enter the campus, she marvels at how the guesthouse truly exemplifies “customer is king.” We then cut to a furious Lee Eun-ho (Bae In-hyuk) who takes great offense at the mere reference to someome as king — bear with him, he’s secretly a prince — much to the confusion of everyone else.

Just as Deok-soo decides to avoid the wacko Eun-ho, they get tangled up in a brawl with two other interns: the Yongcheonru heir Chun Jun-hwa (Jung Geon-joo) and the poor yet scrappy Go Soo-ra (Jaechan). While the four are all given demerits despite their great protests, they end up bonding. From horsing around to dramatic bro-shower antics to the chagrin of Deok-soo, the four become fast friends. We even get some romantic hints through a charged snippet of Eun-ho giving an unconscious Deok-soo an underwater kiss of life. But will their friendship be able withstand all their secrets coming to light?

You guys… cross-dressing to get into a prestigious, yet cutthroat institution and finding three unlikely pals in the process? This teaser is giving me major Sungkyunkwan Scandal energy, and I am so here for it!

Written by Park Hyun-jin (My Military Valentine) and directed by Myung Hyun-woo (Grand Shining Hotel), Check-in Hanyang is set to premiere December 21 on Channel A.

Pros:
1. The three MLs - Jaechan/JGJ reunion, and a chance for Bae In-hyuk to redeem himself if he can roll more Queen's Umbrella than Park's Marriage Contract.
2. Ummm ... Joseon glasses?

Cons: So many red flags waving, from the engine to the caboose.
1. The director of two of the worst dramas in the last couple of years.
2. The writer of My Military Valentine, a stinker in not-fun ways.
3. Kim Ji-eun, who is not a good actor and never seems to improve - she has two-and-a-half expressions at best, and the previews show all of them.
4. Slo-mo tablecloth-shaking that gives me the KtL shivers.
5. Cross-dressing. Sigh.

Who knows? Fingers crossed for the *right* kind of train wreck.

Let us not forget his stint as bespectacled-but-outrageously-psychopathic tutor to Jaechan (no less) in Bitter Sweet Hell, though.

hmm...our boy Gun-Ju managed to stray away from the guesthouse in that one. I think he only gets trapped in guesthouses when tumbling back in time.

It's not clear where he really lives, though, until the end--and then only sort of?? We could posit a goshiwon...isn't that sort of like the guesthouse of today?

Between the time of Secret Romantic Guesthouse and this here Joseon Junho Hotel drama, Jung Geon-joo played a substantial supporting role in Bitter Sweet Hell in which he played a very sensual game of catch with Jaechan, and actor he is also co-starring with (again) here. I propose that being a psychopathic tutor is what he was doing between staying at the Ihwawon and Hanhang guesthouses, not just moving in a straight line.

He's taking a meandering path towards his fate.

I think the GLASSES make a big difference as to both social class and living arrangements

3

And I would challenge the psyhopath description as he bleak background provided the impetus for his 2VL behavior, as opposed to the VL in that one, who was just, alas, born that way.

2

LOL. He came by it honestly 🤣

If he starts wearing glasses in this one, we'll know, we'll know.

I have to mention a quirky li'l web drama he did with Hwang In Youp called W.H.Y.. 10 eps totaling about a movie's length. Lightweight but funny, with fantastic scenery and a shockingly good soundtrack. 2018 ya'll. One of the golden years for k-drama. Thanks for sharing, some kind beanie shared this before and I can recommend it’s worth the watch. I love seeing web dramas with now popular actors. I hope newbies to this one enjoy it too.

I have been a fan of web dramas for a while, some are really good and would have been great turned into full 4-8 episode dramas.

Thanks for the recommendation, @zindigo. I enjoyed it a great deal, and I've never seen Jeju look so amazingly beautiful, even in dramas with far larger budgets!!!

Poor Jung Gun-joo has been stuck in a Joseon inn as a scholar for 2 years now. From The Secret Romantic Guesthouse to Yongcheonru in Check-in Hanyang 😅.

The writing and directing team give me pause, but the cast of MLs is lovely, and it looks undeniably cute (or, at least, that's what they're selling us). I guess I'll be checking in to Yongcheonru! 💼😎
