Premiere Watch: Love in the Big City

Time slot: Monday (single drop)
Broadcaster: TVING
Genre: Youth, romance, comedy, queer
Episode count: 8
Global streamer: Viki/Viu

Reasons to watch: Don’t be like me and get utterly confused between the streaming series Love in the Big City and the film of the same name that premiered earlier this month in theaters. The movie stars Kim Go-eun and Noh Sang-hyun. The drama stars Nam Yoon-soo, Jin Ho-eun, and Lee Soo-kyung. But, there is reason to be confused, as they’re both adapted from the same novel by Park Sang-young — who incidentally wrote the scripts for our drama version. Word on the street is that the drama series Love in the Big City separates out one of the side storylines from the main storyline in the novel (which became the film). So, the drama story follows three youngsters as they explore the big city, relationships, and their sexuality. While not being directly promoted as a BL drama, you could have fooled me.

TL;DR: The drama counterpart of the film Love in the Big City starring Nam Yoon-su

After all the hate that poor actor got, I just hope it's a good drama and it gets lots of love.

I'm glad this one is airing at the same time than Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo, since I've been waiting for both shows with excitement.

Oh so this *is* connected to the movie?! I thought it was interesting that both a movie and drama with the same title were coming out so closely together.

So is this like a spinoff of the movie?

The book is divided into 4 sections. The movie adapts only the first section while the drama adapts the whole book (including the first) . Nam Yoon su is not in the movie. His character there is played by Noh Sang hyun.

OMG, this kid donated a kidney to his father! I didn't know that. I feel like people are really burying the lede here with this whole homophobic condemnation of a gay role.

What does him donating his kidney have to do with the role?

@britney I saw a video on Youtube about how badly this fellow is being slandered and insulted for taking this role. It doesn't actually have anything to do with his acting or this series. I would be looking forward to it in any case, because I like him. But, it does seem like he's got some moral courage. Maybe it will also translate into brave acting decisions.

I thought the movie was a friends to lovers romcom and the drama was story about a HIV+ gay man. How is it the same character? Is it supposed to take place years apart?

The book follows the main character from college days into his 30s. So it spans a few years. The movie focuses on his friendship with his female friend (that's the ROM com part). The series will also show this "Rom Com" part as well as what happens after. The series is the complete story, focusing on his life.

No - I I find it confusing that the description above talks first about the cast of the movie when the "premiere watch" is for the drama. As far as MDL knows, there's no overlap in the cast between the two.

@britney It looks like they're both derived from the novel, but not directly related to each other. The promo materials suggest the drama and the movie tell different stories with different sets of characters. I guess we'll find out tomorrow.

The movie is in theatrical release in Korea only, for now.

It's just confusing that two projects adapted from the source material with same name was released around the same time.

It's still interesting if the stories are in the same universe even if it's no direct overlap.

I don't really understand the purpose to tell the same story in a movie and in a drama at the same time without the same actors...

Is this show getting a drama hangout? I know dramabeans doesn't do it for some webdramas but since we got this premiere watch randomly, I was wondering if a hangout is happening too.

Like perhaps many others I am super confused. A Hangout would be nice as the Fanwall rolls by super fast and one may miss out on a wonderful post.
