In the early 1990s, I remember one late Sunday night stumbling upon a PBS show called IRON CHEF. Iron Chef was a Japanese television cooking show that ran from 1993 to 1999 in which two cooks are encouraged to make something using a specific ingredient in a timed battle. The show has since received adaptations in America, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Vietnam, and Israel. Strange ingredients, exciting dishes, harsh judging as part of a competition show back then was unique.
Trends seem to be circular as the hottest show in Korea today is "Culinary Class Wars,” a Netflix cooking competition show. The country’s mega convenience franchises have promptly responded to the cooking competition show’s stir among domestic foodies. CU, a convenience franchise brand run by BGF, teamed up with the show’s ultimate winner Kwon Seong- joon (stage nickname Napoli Matfia), owner and chef at Italian restaurant Via Toledo in Seoul. The franchise is releasing one of Kwon's most popular creations on the show, his chestnut tiramisu, later this week. CU on Tuesday accepted preorders for the tiramisu before putting it on store shelves on Saturday. All 20,000 sold out in less than 20 minutes, the company said.

I also started watching Iron Chef when it first appeared in the 1990s, although in Southern California it wasn't on PBS--late night on a local channel. The cooking was extraordinary, but what was hilarious about it was the supposed "back story" recited every episode, plus the breathless, sports-like announcing. It was really funny.
It did inaugurate the whole cooking competition genre in the U.S., which sustains the Food Channel, and my kids grew up watching Chopped -- and my daughter and her friends in high school even staged their own Chopped competition.
Culinary Class Wars is the most Korean variation on these cooking competition shows ever--with the elite "white spoon chefs" from fine dining restuarants pitted against the so called "ordinary"-- "black spoon chefs". There's an element of Squid Games and Fitness 100 in the competition, with the contestants watching each other and commenting. I found parts of it really funny, ala Iron Chef, whereas the current cooking competitions in the U.S. tend to take themselves too seriously these days. Highly recommended!

NOTES FROM 9TAILEDVIXEN'S 2ND WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 2024:
1. This Week in Life
Fell and hit my good knee on some steps after Tuesday Yoga class. Said knee promptly bled through my favourite Yoga pants and I had to hobble home as quickly as I could to get the bloodstains out.
Sigh... life is not a picnic when one is chronically clumsy.
2. This Week in Korean Women's News
1. Han Kang wins the Nobel Prize for Literature!
Han Kang, author of the Booker Prize-winning novel The Vegetarian, has become the first Korean and the first Asian woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. I would say she achieved this IN SPITE OF the toxic Confucian patriarchy of South Korea. CONGRATULATIONS, MS. HAN!
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c206djljel1o
Best of all, South Korea's Incel President is obligated to congratulate her (a woman - the gender he despises):

2. In their 80s, these South Korean women learned reading and rap
Born at a time when women were often marginalized in education, Park Jeom-Sun and her friends were among a group of older adults learning how to read and write the Korean alphabet, hangeul, at a community center in their farming village in South Korea’s rural southeast.
They were having so much fun that they started dabbling with poetry. They began writing and performing rap in summer last year.

3. South Korean woman sues government over abduction, adoption of child to U.S.
A 70-year-old South Korean woman sued her government, an adoption agency and an orphanage over the adoption of her daughter, who was sent to the United States in 1976, months after she was kidnapped at age four.
It's the first known case of a Korean birth parent suing the government and an adoption agency for damages over the wrongful adoption of their child, said Kim Soo-jung, one of the lawyers representing Han Tae-soon.

@bbstl @reply1988 So further (mis)adventures:
I just got back from Saturday morning Aerial Yoga class and:
1. The Good News
I can finally complete an entire Aerial Yoga flow (7 poses flowing from one to another while I'm suspended mid-air) for the first time ever!
And I did it by myself without my teacher needing to help me with positions!
2. The bad news
I was practicing and came down hard on my right foot and now my 4 toe on there is swollen.
Why has it been open season on my legs, ankles, feet and toes since I started Aerial Yoga? WHY?
FML!

UGH! My Thursday teacher was already telling me "BE CAREFUL!" when I dropped down on my feet from a little higher than usual (but with no injuries)... and now on Saturday I accidentally hit the mat too hard from a LOWER drop.
FML.
On the bright side, my new yoga mat is very sturdy so I'm not slipping about and it's lightweight so it's easier to carry around than my old nearly-dead yoga mat.

@bbstl I think I've almost forgotten that when a person does any exercise that is more complicated than walking or gentle stretching on a regular basis, the built-in risk of injury goes up.
And given that I'm spending 3 mornings per week dangling from the ceiling with only the silk hammock and my core and upper body strength to hold me up, it's probably a given that I'd get injured at some point.
Ah well. I can admire the shades of blue, black, and purple on my badly-bruised toe now...

Do you use Arnica? I use the gel and the little pellets (one at a time, as many times a day as you want) and it really reduces bruising and swelling for me.

@bbstl I currently use pure Moringga oil. That heals wounds, gets rid of bruising, and prevents scars if you use it right from the start.
The toe looks a little less banged up today already. Still bruised but pain is minimal and it no longer looks like it's gonna fall off...

so yesterday we filmed 3 more clips, one for st martins´ day and with a phone, I had to stage the action and direct it and then our media person filmed it, and another colleague was the actor, and he did really well. we had 6 takes for that. with props and all
the other 2 were about spirit season starting nov 2nd, and we had a story of a minister who meets a ghost / poltergeist and they bite each others noses off, and the other was about a forest guardian who has its golden throne sink into the ground when people cut the forest down.
we had 4 takes for each half of it was in dialect so even I had trouble although I am a bit used to reading dialects. but this time I was like äbbbbrhhhh I cannot!
fun though, by the end my conversation partner was laughing so hard we had to stop filming. but it is really fun.
and tomorrow: vacation and moms´ birthday.
I dont know why but today I am having anxiety and shivers maybe because there is a very fancy exhibition opening later and my stuff doesnt look too fance but it has a great story. I really dont know what caused the sudden bout of nerves.
overthinking perhaps. this shit is too physical, I mean anxiety is a mental thing why is it giving me hot lashes and cramped fingers.
there is a lot of tension...
since the city is looking for ways to cut expenses so they have sent a hidden spy to the library. to my knowledge it is illegal - they have also recorded personal conversations. If they are doing that and it gets confirmed, we have decided to go on strike.
funny stuff too.
patron asks for Herman Hunts´ book Hesse
and is there a sequel called Esse Moor?
another one asks for "just the first chapter or the national epic Kalevipoeg" first, it is in verse and continuous text that doesnt have chapters, second, how are we supposed to slice the book in parts?
ok just in case the spy is on to me, redfox over and out. don´t tell on me.

Well, body and mind are not so separate. I got kind of angsty one time at a job (every day for some time) and found out that yes, it wasn't very easy and yes, I was not sure I was doing it well enough but also Yes, I drank way too much coffee and that made my whole body feel uncomfortably alert, like I had a stroboscope light inside of me.
Also, when as a singer you work on relaxing the jaw mucles, you might find that for some time you suddenly get very easily angry. Because when we hold back anger, we bite our teeth together, quite literally.

A couple of weeks ago, a couple of us were discussing The Remarried Empress and how it would hard or weird to adapt it since it's European inspired or that's the aesthetic. Anyhoo, it's being adapted. Shin Mina is playing the title role.
I don't know how I feel about it because I can't imagine how it will look. They'll likely change the names and look right? I don't know where the webtoon originated but according to Webtoon US, it's an ongoing project so I wonder how much of the story will be covered. Granted, they could just covered 1 arc and be done with it haha.
That webtoon is feeling so long to me. After seeing the news about the casting, I went back to catch up on it and I just skipped around haha. All the betrayals and magic were alot haha

Oh goodness, why?!))) I mean, it's not as bad as Han So Hee and Cha Eun Woo for leads (and Lee Soo Hyuk was too good for ex-husband) - they advertised manhwa few years ago in costumes and all - but still!
I believe it's based on a complete novel, idk why webtoon version takes THIS long to finish - ending is known, no point of dancing around.
And honestly, this story isn't even good for all its hype...Required fields are marked *

It's just hard to imagine it adapted. Like even with how traditionist and rigid the Joseon era might be, it's hard to imagine this particular situation.
Wow, even though shows like The Forbidden Marriage, Love Song for Illusion, and Mr Queen exist, I still can't imagine this drama at all haha. I can't even imagine Shin Mina being *that* deadpan or serious like Navier is supposed to be.
Clearly this screenwriter/production team is more creative than I am.
If they modernized it, wouldn't it just be the world of chaebols?

Gikata
October 11, 2024 at 11:06 AM
@britney most of hyped webtoon are not really suited to get adapted, but when did that stopped greedy producers?)))
In faux-Joseon era it'll probably fare slightly better logically, honestly, because as a faux-European monarchy the plot was highly ridiculous (author clearly never read a single page of pre-modern western history in their whole life and it SHOWS).
If they modernize it, it'll be GOONG 2.0. Who knows? It did work once)))
vienibenmio
October 11, 2024 at 11:28 AM
I actually JUST found out that it's set in "the Dongdae Empire." So I think it will be a fictional setting? It has to be one that allowed divorce, too.
vienibenmio
October 11, 2024 at 6:32 AM
Yeah, I've been thinking about that too. It's going to be Joseon era and I have no idea how that's going to work. I've said it elsewhere, but I think Shin Min-a is wasted on this role. Navier is sooooo dull and she won't get to use any of her strengths, unless they drastically alter her personality. I think we're gonna run into the same issue we did with Marry My Husband where the female lead felt so bland and cold, especially compared to the second female lead (I assume that will be Rashta in this case) who was more interesting and complex. And Marry My Husband didn't even have the slavery aspect...
I actually dropped the webtoon, I got so bored with it.

I forgot about it haha
And I just skipped around to see what happened after seeing the news about the adaptation. It does get tedious. Though I feel that way about alot of webtoons haha.
It's hard to maintain interest with how long they take.
I did read Marry My Husband but I think I skipped around and then came back to the chapters I missed. Same with See You In My 19th Life.
Navier is supposed to be regal and poised. How do you liven up a rigid character when they're supposed to aristocratic?
Required fields are marked *
vienibenmio
October 11, 2024 at 7:30 AM
Yeah, that's IMO the fatal flaw of Remarried Empress, Navier is basically perfect except for being too stoic. She was raised in an incredibly privileged environment. And we're supposed to be rooting for her over a really interesting and flawed character who started out with every disadvantage, but used what she had to achieve her goals. Honestly, the author wants us to hate Rashta so much it almost gets ridiculous, they might as well just have her kick a puppy.

October 11, 2024 at 10:57 AM
Two steps:
1) by writing that character to have humanizing flaws and vulnerabilities. @vienibenmio is 100% right - Navier is a Mary Sue whose only "downsides" are pretty much her being too great and saintly compared to everyone else. ML wasn't all that much deeper and realistic either.
2) hiring a REALLY competent actor capable of making even a stoic character engaging. I do like SMA as an actress, but I don't think she can rise above the stiff and weakly written role like some true acting powerhouses are capable of.

vienibenmio
October 11, 2024 at 11:30 AM
I agree, I love SMA but I don't think this role is a good fit for her. I agree that Heinrey is also a really shallow character and I'll be curious to see who plays him (also curious to see if they do a "noona" type relationship.)
Gikata
October 11, 2024 at 12:58 PM
@vienibenmio I'd say he's even more shallow character because he's just this dreamboat "reward" guy for Navier and, unlike her, hardly even has a character arc of his own except some blink-and-you-miss-it politicking that no one really cares about as long as he's
naked in a fountainmaking heart eyes on her.I'm confident that noona aspect will remain, that's pretty much a main selling point)))

I've been watching some videos of a kpop group, mainly the variety/interview stuff, and it's like I don't wanna like them cause they're younger than me haha
But it's like aww they're cute haha (in a adorable, funny little brother way) and then I saw them performing in a music video and I was 🫨 haha

But also it shows the power of makeup and styling haha
I can't even imagine make up and styling changing how I look haha. (I don't wear make up and I have a comfortable plain jane style)
Also the group I was looking at, there are 13 members and I'm just like that is too much! What the hell?! Haha

Taemin is OG genius maknae/golden kid of kpop. Phenomenal dancer who also learned from the scratch (he had no lines is his group's first albums lol) to sing better than some of "main vocalists" out there. His artistry is something else, guy is basically hard harrying half of a whole industry's experimental creativity atm.
I recall you saying you don't know what good dancing is - well, in terms of kpop it's him personified. His choreos require such a mad level of body control that younger idols are basically afraid to cover them because they know they won't manage and get laughed at^^ He even stand outs among other SHINee members, which is no small fit, since they as a group are one of the best dancers in kpop EVER.

Taemin is the idol of idols and is such a huge talent. He should be equal to Michael Jackson or Beyonce but SM have held him back. Thankfully with his new company he has started touring more widley.
I love how he is so down to earth and goofy but when he gets on stage he is literally a beast.

Gikata
October 11, 2024 at 3:41 PM
@britney yes, he's more or less unarguably THE best kpop dancer of all generations, acknowledged by both public and other idols en masse. Pick a random "main dancer" from any group nowadays and they'll likely name him as their role model.
Not to say that current groups don't have good or even great dancers/iconic choreos, but with these kind of things you also gotta look at longevity of the hype. You can't really be called a legend when you just got famous 5 minutes ago, right?))) Taemin certainly has long proven his stardom.
Mrs Buckwheat
October 11, 2024 at 3:51 PM
There are of course other great dancers in various idol groups but no one is at the level of Taemin. He is able to control his body so well and his choreographies are very complex and those of SHINee are always known to be super hard. He is amazing in his group but also is highly successful individually in his solo career. I don't think there is another idol similar to him that has such huge success in both fields but also has the quality and complexity of dancing.
Mrs Buckwheat
October 11, 2024 at 4:24 PM
For Taemins latest comeback with Sexy In The Air, his back up dancers were all highly respected choreographers -Kany, Kasper, Bada Lee and some of Beyonce's dancers as well . No other idol would be able to achieve this.

I saw Michael Jackson inspiration in one of those dances. I'm rhythmless so anyone who can move their bodies in a coordinated way is already like wow to me haha
I'm sorry my bar is low haha
But seriously, I did think there was some artistry to his dancing.
(Sidenote: it's blowing my mind how so many of these different group members mare in the same age range haha. How are BTS members like the age of members from Seventeen haha🤯 ah time haha. It's like finding out that Betty White was older than sliced bread)

Happy Friday, Beanies! It was a really troublesome week, so I typed it in a particularly annoyed mood.
This may affect my critical tolerance negativelyUnlike a certain someone I like my life lazy and chill as possible... too bad reality refuses to help with that. But LYN once again proved he's a very considerate man and lessened the amount of weekly updates I need to cover – slightly, but I still appreciate the effort... Or so I thought because the only day I wanted to sleep in he decides to livestream after ages, forcing me to redo my notes last second. Grrr, sir, you're are so lucky I'm fond of you!We start with a fresh OST - “Splashing ink” for THE RISE OF NING drama I didn't bother to check because fauxcest and me do not click. While it's a nice song, I cannot say I love it – is it because he's sort of straining his voice here to sound high and, idk, thin and breathy? Not his comfort zone, at least as far as my ears are concerned. Official MV:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7fs_vC4af8
Subbed lyrics:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGDyvSHVK9s
Back to OUR SONG – I think it was really a final FINAL concert, wrapping up at 12 (I think) episodes. No fiery rock this time around – probably to prevent me from overheating))) Too bad – I'd love me some distraction... For this encore Ning-ge went full international, teaming up with two non-domestic artists, first being Taiwanese singer-songwriter Chou Chuan Huing (Steve Chou) for a duo remix of Chou's hit “Blue flower” (what's up with the “blue” songs lately?). While the melody is lovely – and lyrics supposedly are too, lamenting about hardships in life or something like that – Chou's voice (and pronunciation, tho I'm unsure if it's his accent or just how he speaks – been a hot minute since I've listened to Taiwanese) is a bit grating to me, and why did background vocals have to be SO LOUD? It's almost as if singers on stage were support for those in the back and not vice versa. Technical problems between mics? Possible since it was live... Idk. Guess it sounded better at the venue because that was, once again, hottest stage of the night)))

Solo fancam: performance was not flawless, but I have no complaints about this new suit, esp the deep neckline. In fact, it was so deep that I managed to spot a bruise quite low on his chest in one of group photos – no, no THAT kind of bruise lol! He claims he burned himself while eating and scar just won't go away – this troublesome child! Go to cosmetologist, don't be stingy! What if your precious “visual brand value” drops, hmmm?
Tbh, it looks more like a bruise from prop arrow (Nan Heng was shot exactly there) to me, and man is a known liar...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQBVvc8YGpg

Funnily, OUR SONG folks even joked about Yuning's voice sounding older/more battered than Chou's afterwards, which our boy laughed off via “yeah, I've been through a lot” - pretty sure those are unrelated facts, but you do you. Thankfully, he got his spirit back for a romantic two-language duo “You and me on the road” (originally by Jacky Cheung) with a Japanese star Ms.OOJA. Who, to my huge relief, has a very nice voice and perfectly melodic delivery. Mixing Chinese and Japanese was an interesting move, but I think they've blended well – both languages and performers. Cameraman going all out to even their heights with diagonal angles was hilarious tho – no need, guys, EVERYONE knows Ning-ge is a human sequoia towering over a whole forest)))

Solo fancam again – are his buttons glowing? How cute!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCxEUbfRiwE
So turns out I'm bad at math, not that it's any surprising – he sang 4 songs in 3 episodes of MELODY JOURNEY, not 2. Meaning it was only 1 song last Sunday, and after watching an episode itself I can confirm that he had to fight for it – or, rather, haggle and manipulate))) Long story short, him and rapper Wang Linkai (Lil Ghost) both liked a demo for sweet serenade to fans “Want to write a song for you”, but Wang, being younger and chattier, got to composer first and went on a looong convincing speech to charm the author, leaving poor Ning-ge sitting there completely ignored... until he realized that he's about about to lose entirely and came out with a quick solution to make it a duo. Which he proceeded to successfully guilt-trip both guys into, being all “ofc, if you don't wanna to work with me, it's fiiine, don't worry” *claps in amazement* Sneaky fox! Surprisingly, I liked the end result of this collab very much – at first song sounded too sweet, almost teeth-achingly so, but it grew on me. Wang sings very decently for a rapper and matches Yuning's voice well, not to mention a great playful on-stage chemistry between them. Those yellow lights in the crowd are from fandom, awww)))

Hard to believe, but it was only second collaboration between them – first happening back in OUR SONG SEASON1, which I almost forgot about. Sorry, I'm really picky with rap, very few artists of this genre earn more than a “lol, pass” from me there. Their version of Jay Chou's “Fade away” was quite fine – lack of grandeur and genre creativity in original season aside, I always loved how rock-heavy Yuning was through it, man didn't spare a single drop of metal he had in him. That outfit tho (but A+ for jeans alone)))

Clunky execution (the coat! can't decide if it's genius or horrible) aside, concept certainly wasn't without its merits (113cm in the title refers to his legs length – yep, that's an official info, no exaggeration whatsoever):

- OSTs for TSOPG and FANGS OF FORTUNE – and no for CICADA even now. This cold war between him and drama makers keeps getting bloodier. just give him a good demo, wtf!
- at least 10 venues at concert tour next year - let's see if you'll manage that^^
- he got “This sky blue” copyrighted! But seems it won't go into his next album – all spots there taken, I guess;
- once again asking for no fanwars during drama airing. So there WILL be reasons for that? Thanks for warning us beforehand...
- and admitting his suggestion of “woman, you're playing with fire” line into ADWAD script lol. At least it wasn't aliens this time)...
Also, I LOVE his new camera equipment, he looks so HD and far less distorted by “beauty” filter with it, bless! Is that a new mole? Pretty^^

Happy Friday, chingu! Thank you for the Yuning love!
I have so much going on this weekend, and I really need some calming music today. "Splashing Ink" is just perfect for today.
I've watched five episodes already, and it reminds me of Ming Lan, so I'll stick with it.

Ming Lan was authentic, well-written, and acted by older and more experienced actors. I'm not expecting it to be half as good, especially with this PD. His work has been very dull to me. I'm just here for Zhang Wan Yi's voice and hope to see Ren Min do well. She has talent, but she has received a lot of criticism for her appearance and voice, which doesn't bother me nearly as much as a particular fairy.
I love her in "Cry Me a Sad River," and I have a soft spot for her. However, this genre is unforgiving, and she'll get complaints, so I hope to see her grow and do better than her last costume drama.

Perhaps because I know too many cutesy voiced girls irl, it never bothered me much in dramas. Certainly not as badly as some obvious speech defects that plenty of actors somehow sport for years without fixing even a bit, ugh. "A particular fairy" is even kinda amusing with her helium voice and pouty lips.
I assume you're NOT on board with my crack ship idea to pair her up with Yuning and see the public SUFFER from audio/vibe dissonance they'll create together?^^Good luck for Ren Min then.

Today I have watched episodes 1 and 2 of The Rise of Ning. The main actress acting is... weak? I don't know how to describe it.
But these first episodes haven't been boring, so I'll keep watching it too.
As it happens, I'm also watching Minglan (44 episodes so far) and I definitely can see some similarities, but cinematography, script and acting are better in Minglan.

I don't think I saw her in anything, but she was BLASTED in her previous drama for variety of reasons, acting included. At the time I didn't pay much attention to it because main gripe was her looks and you know how "seriously" I take cnetz opinions on actors visuals^^ But now I wonder if that was the case of bigger issue somehow buried under a smaller one - glimpsed over reactions to the show, and everyone seems to agree that her performance is somehow off. Maybe I should sacrifice one hour and see for myself...
MINGLAN was sooo excruciatingly enraging that I didn't even get to the adult part, fearing I'll
accidentally break my laptop if I continue.

I'm here for Fridays With Gikata.
RISE OF NING OST maybe not in his top tier of drama songs, but I liked it. The Our Song final made me think his voice is tired. From what you've describe its been an exhausting stretch of work for LYN, so one can see how that would be reflected here. Didn't care for the Taiwanese song but the Japanese songstress has a voice fit for Broadway, pure of tone. I would like to see them duet again.
The 'Lil Ghost rapper duet (from last week) was terrific, inspiring even. Stupid me, I've always thought rappers were not confident of their singing voice so chose to rap. This young man, he's got a good voice and LYN doesn't overpower him in that performance.
It's hard to better last week's "The Sky Blue" performance, and good to know he's got a copyright on that song.
The modified Eisenhower jackets are suited to his frame. The checkered bathrobe (season 1), not so much. Honestly, if I had my say, I'd put him in something a bit more tailored and fitted but I'm old school, what do I know?
Thank you for making my Fridays better, Gikata. Traveling next week, but hope to keep up!

Hi and you're welcome. Have a good trip next week)))
It's genuinely hard to tell when he's tired and when he's not because it very rarely shows in his voice - this insane man somehow managed to sing even when he couldn't TALK AT ALL during his vocal chords problems era years ago. Doing a livestream for 4 hours 40 minutes is probably an indicator he's in a great mood at least - when truly exhausted, he usually wraps at ~3^^
Same feelings about his OUR SONG partners this time. I assume Ms.OOJA isn't singing anime OSTs, because no way I wouldn't remember a voice so beautiful...
Rap genre, esp in non-USA, is a tricky beast. For example, in SK pop music HIGHLY favors male tenors above any other timbres so guys with naturally deep voices have to stick to other genres mostly and for an idol trainee it's an almost guarantee they'd be forced into rapper position. I never quite understood why it has to be so... unflexible, but when in Rome *shrugs* Lil Ghost really sings nicely. He'll be in at least 1 more episode with Yuning so I'll certainly pay attention then.
"Bathrobes" were a huge thing for LYN's fashion when he just debuted - not sure if it was a raging trend back then or stylists simply didn't know how to work with a frame as... vertical as his. Gosh, the amount of fugly shapeless long coats turning him into human cotton candy on a stick my eyes had to suffer through... Things got significantly better last 2 years or so. Wouldn't say I am THAT old school when it comes to fashion, but when you have a model with basically doll-like proportions, why re-inventing the wheel? Nicely tailored suits are eternal classics for a reason.

I forgot to ask. The Our Song clips were out of sync, yes? Because the voices sure seemed out of sync with the recording, or am I looney?
My son is 6'2", an ectomorph. My husband(s) were 6'2 1/2" (passed away long since) and 6'5" (shrunken down since), so me, I think LYN is normal.
Billowing doesn't suit height. He either had poor "wardrobe" choices back then or just didn't understand how his frame looked in clothes. Baffles me why someone like Tom Ford doesn't get ahold of that long frame of his and do him up right. But again, what do I know?
And, I don't understand the whole tenor thing going on in Korea either, but maybe it's more appealing for a youth audience. Boy band voices, if you will. Nevertheless, there are some really great Korean tenors in pop music.

@cliosservant1846 entirely possible for OS videos - when it comes to Chinese variety, stuff they upload on YT is always troubled with issues - bad audio, no audio, bad sync etc. Watch these videos taken down and re-posted in like few months or so. It was also recorded from livestream so even more reasons for poorer quality...
He's certainly not normal height for China, even towering over most of his Northeastern peers known for being tallest on average guys among all c-regions. And was sincerely terrified to find out he's got even taller in the last few years due to working on his posture lol - someone pls tell him he's not exactly still growing at 34 and that taking his prescribed calcium won't make him pass 2 meters bar... probably)))
Hahaha, that's because he's avoiding anything fashion-related like a plague))) Guy LOATHES posing and modeling, I can't even imagine the paycheck that (super duper expensive) jewelry brand he's advertising had to tempt him with to overcome his usual "no, thanks, never ask me again" instinctive reaction to such things. It's been like centuries since he's as much as walked red carpet at the event, and he's been attending them non-stop! All the invitations to fashion weeks and magazine covers he receives probably end up in trash can faster than owls blink... If some extra stubborn designer stalks him, I'm not sure whether he'll agree out of politeness or file a police report first))) Most we can hope for is him lucking out with costume designers in his dramas. Which was not always the case...
Tenor thing must be something deeply cultural, just like local beauty standards we, outsiders, are often baffled with. There are plenty of good tenors in SK indeed. But limiting a good singing to just reaching the highest note possible is so... limiting. And when you limit art you start killing it.

Few hit musicals released albums years ago, but either that wasn't very profitable at the time or they ran into other issues (legal ones?) productions didn't feel like battling with, so here we are, sadly. At most they share MVs of leads singing one track each as a part of promos and that's it(((

I don't know much about kpop industry because the only group I have watched a lot is 2PM. But going only by them, I think, at least with the previous generations, the companies did try to make images in the beginning. How much of it stuck probably depended on the group members.
Like, going waaay back to the oldest 2PM videos it is obvious that in the beginning they were trying to show Taec and Chansung who were the tallest members as these brooding mysterious huge beasts, and Wooyoung who had the smallest frame as the cute chaotic baby. But it simply didn't work! Taec and Chansung are such dorks, Taec just can't stop being a clown, Wooyoung is very shy, and Junho was an explosive ball of energy! The images changed very quickly.
I don't know anything about the more recent generations of idols, of course.

The New Yorker this week had a story on Bang Si-hyuk (the man behind some of BTS's success, as well as the founder of Hybe) which talked a little about the way he puts together groups, his method definitely concentrating on image and attempts to consciously construct fan groups, etc. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2024/10/14/the-k-pop-king (not sure if this link is accessible to non-subscribers).
The article focuses on how he put together Katseye, the international and racially diverse girl group that nonetheless (to me, that is) sounds a lot like every other girl group out there.
Its interesting, but the one thing I thought the article missed was how long a history this kind of combining of group/image construction had in pop music, so even though Bang developed certain refinements well suited to the global, social media age --like Weverse--he isn't that different from past music industry executives, it seems to me. The thing is, the image making and engineered fan response can only go so far, it seems to me. Katseye might have a hit or two--in fact, I hope these young women have great success, (though my best wishes for them are not enough so that I will become an "EYEKON" or even listen to them regularly) --but I'm pretty sure it will be temporary. We might all be trapped in a consumer culture of image making, our choices constrained by marketing, but in the end, the public makes the final decision about what they like or believe about each group, and how much they want to listen to it.
That's why, going back to the choice of my childhood, I have to say again, that I believe the Monkees were the greatest musical group of the 1960s. The Last Train to Clarksville still brings tears to my eyes.

Again, only talking about 2PM, JYP looked for possible trainees in US, specifically for image-making. Two of the members were Korean-Americans, and one, Nichkhun was Thai-American who not only knew nothing about Korea or a word of Korean, but had no interest in singing and dancing! They asked him so much until his father decided that this might hold a better future for him. All for image-making.

Adding 2 thoughts on this.
1. It's mind boggling that the company is willing to invest so much money and time on a reluctant blank slate with language barrier, instead of recruiting any of the hundreds of wildly talented hopefuls at their disposal. For visual and image-making.
2. The investment has paid off. Looking at Nichkhun now, it's not easily imaginable that he started from scratch at the age of 18 with no prior training or interest.

Oh, the idol who was put on hiatus for almost a year, Seunghan of RIIZE has been reinstated or however that's phrased. He's supposed to be rejoining group activities.
Personally, I feel kinda bad for him. I just imagine it's gonna be awkward and weird for everyone. Plus those same "fans" and netizens who complained about him in the first place will be at it again.
I don't know if he had more freedom during this forced hiatus but now he's back to not being able to date, smoke, hang out, whatever he was doing with himself.
I've seen people say he got his spot back because of the recent idol who was dropped from his group and label for being an alleged criminal. It's supposed to take the spotlight off of that or something.

Korea's Criminal Law defines the crime of rape as sexual activity against one's will involving "violence or intimidation." As such, in order to secure a rape conviction, prosecutors must prove that the perpetrator had used or threatened violence against the victim. Sexual assault against a victim in a vulnerable state, such as under the influence of alcohol or drugs, is seen as "quasi-rape" since the victim cannot give consent.

I've mentioned this about the other celebrities who get caught up in scandals but I don't understand what they're supposed to do with themselves after the public or industry turns on them.
I don't know how old the RIIZE guy is but I assume he was scouted as a teen and he'd been together with his members for a decent amount of time. And then to just cut him off from that for almost a year to then be dropped back into their new dynamic feels kinda cruel. The Nobel Prize committee has a website and they published an interview with Han Kang on it. I read in another article that she found out about the prize only 15 minutes before the rest of the world and thought it was a scam! https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/literature/2024/han/interview/

I thought at least you'd know if you were one of the runner-ups, like "It's you or one of these five other people".
But it's true, there is no drum roll silence reveal with a camera on the losers, either. It's not the Oscars.

She's relatively young for a Nobel laureate, so I am sure she wasn't expecting it. I see I read The Vegetarian at this time last year! I derived a lot of comfort from her anti-violence message.

There's no shame in being the kind of person who checks out the winner of the Nobel Prize with the hopeful assumption that it must be someone writing something worth noticing. Though it seems "everybody" does that, it is not everybody. It's not even all women, even if as long as we are allowed to, statistically, we read more.

@ahjummaaa Here is the secret: I don't feel compelled to finish library books I've borrowed if I don't like them, or even if I just don't have time to read them. That way, I can request any book that sounds good, because there's really no penalty. I also request that the library purchase books. The worst that can happen is that the book is too expensive or hard to get and they say no. Years ago when I finished my oral exams from graduate school, I came up with the idea of taking people's recommendations & going straight to the library with them. I just couldn't let reading be something that was a punishment. I need reading to keep me on an even keel.

@ahjummaaa Sometimes everyone has read the Nobel Laureate for Literature, because it's someone like Kazuo Ishiguro who had bestsellers that became films, or Bob Dylan. The reason I knew about this writer was this here website, where we had a discussion of South Korean books that were available and popular in English. We didn't read The Vegetarian as a group, but it came up in discussion and I saw that it won a Booker Prize, so I borrowed it from the library. This is the first South Korean writer to win a Nobel Prize, so that's pretty cool.

that's really wonderful though how it caught your interest and you took initiative to get the book. I've read excerpts from her book (internet meme's to be honest) that moved me but I still didn't do anything about it. I think I should be more curious and open-minded. Maybe give books with unfamiliar subject matters a chance even if I can't connect initially. I think I was thinking, "Gwangju uprising, what does that have to do with me?" and thus I missed out on a good book Human Acts for years.

She seems very likable, but the reason for not holding a press conference doesn't really make sense, considering she could use it to talk more about the subject of peace and communication.
I will assume she is the kind of person who really, really prefers being alone in her study a lot with lovely words and interesting grammar, carefully formulating the best sentences to express her idea. I respect that, too.

While SK is currently technically not "at peace", they haven't seen an active war in... quite a while. So it would've been pretty tone deaf of her to talk about things (and likely places) she has only theoretical knowledge of. Whatever her real reason was, this decision was probably for the better. More people need to learn to shut up about serious issues they do not grasp, world would've been a much better place then.

Some beanies talked about a show where some Korean young man (former singer? or something?) invited different celebrities like, to his home for a very peaceful "talk show" where you often got a good impression of a side of the that felt very real.
Do you know what I'm talking about, and maybe where I can see it?

The latest series had 14 episodes they usually have two celebrities over a couple of weeks then move on to the next batch. Park Bogum, Wookie and Jennie from BLACKPINK were some of the cast in this time round. They do a range of jobs and they move into their homes so you see various careers and families. It’s quite funny as the in studio MC’s tease them as they struggle with the challenges of the task.

We had children who swapped lives and families with other children in Danish television, that was very interesting. LIke, one well-trained sports boy had to do ballet for a week and had a hard time, because he was very competitive but of course had no chance of being "the best" on the Royal School of Ballet.
It was quite touching to see him being so uncomfortable but still working hard, and just admitting to his embarrassment and gratefully accepting all the help he could get - and that was a lot, since his short-time family *all* were ballet dancers, professionals or becoming professionals. His borrowed big brother helped him practice in the apartment, too.

I'd prefer less of the fun comments from the studio, if I could choose. Especially with the Bogum story; He is genuinely touched, and then he kind of has to be "funny" and smooth out that raw feeling, from a studio where their job more or less is to be ironic about his experience.
The other guy has had a more ambiguous experience, f*cking things up for a not very wealthy family, it seems, (I hope their income was insured in spite of him) and it might make more sense to smooth out that, but also, maybe it would be more interesting if the family and his failure (I am not saying he was an idiot; it's not a given thing that you can take over someone else's life competently) uhm, his failure and the family's everyday life could be looked at without all the "ha ha", and maybe it would actually make his mistakes funnier in a "we are all humans" kind of way. 🤷🏻
But I guess this is like almost all things that are good; you want them to be better.

NDAs? Probably.
But I should think the majority of people who date Korean celebrities probably automatically keep themselves extremely low profile since it's common knowledge that you get attacked relentlessly and your privacy is gone if the general public knows you are dating so-and-so.
At least, you would think most sensible people would think that way.

This is not only korean netizens. International netizens on social media doing the same things.
Many Karina twitter/tik tok fans hated and insulted Lee Jae Wook just because he admitted and didn't deny their relationship.
Or how they acted offended when Jisoo dated with Ahn Bo Hyun, not with Jung Hae In she was shipped with.
International fans of popular k-stars hating and insulting each other in the worst way possible because of literally nothing. Even fans of two co-stars who filmed in the same drama doing it, just because of some lame competitions in acting and popularity. If you heard about stupid k-pop fanwars and constant comparisons, k-drama fans doing the same things.
What about fake rumours, international fans not any better in it. Whole k-drama twitter trying hard to hate and cancel Lee Jung Jae for YEARS because of the fake rumours and misinformation. The only truthful bad thing he did was two DUI 20 years ago. And yet they can't check rumors they're spreading about him for many years, while trying hard to cancel him.
So, it's not only "k", unfortunately netizens around the world so crazy.

Desperately Seeking...Webtoon in English for Moon in the Day 낮에 뜨는 달)
Hey Beanies, I'm late (as always) to the party. And apparently No Gain No Love has made me a slave to Kim Young Dae (read: embarrassed fangirl), so now I'm trying to catch up to all his dramas.
I just finished Moon in the Day. I know what the drama was supposed to be (although it missed the mark). But, it has now made me interested in reading the Manhwa it is based off of.
I'm not sure if my googling skills are just that bad, but I'm having difficulty locating the Manhwa in translation. Can anyone help me out?

I'm actually kind of sad because Moon in the Day is totally my cup of tea in terms of tragic, sageuk love stories. But KYD was just so wooden in it. He has the look, but not the diction, and I fear a lack of understanding of his character in that one.
I hope he does better in Dear X.
Also, strange that KYD is filming when his company said he was going to be signing up for his military enlistment at the second half of 2024.....which we are deeply in already. HAHA! Perhaps he will sign up after Christmas.

I just saw a recap for the drama Oh My Baby (I think that's what it's called). The almost 40 year old single woman wants a baby and she's sick so she's on a time table. 3 suitors (really 2) want to get with her.
With all this happening, I just kept thinking that there are SOOOOOO many abandoned and unwanted children in the world yet adoption is STILL looked down. There's babies, there's kids, and there are teens, all who would love to have loving parents and it's just totally disregarded.
Granted, from what I understand the adoption process is not easy and I get the appeal of having your own kids. It's just the fact that it's not even an option that gets me.

Kdramas - not gonna say SK irl, but since art imitates life... yunno - have really negative view on non-blood related relatives, esp adopted kids. How many times we've seen "abandoned by parent(s) who decided to remarry" backstory for leads? Or "a kid of problematic parents" one for a future serial killer? Continuing the bloodline at all cost and holding prejudices based on genetics is the part of their cultural code that's very hard to overcome, I assume.

And that's always so crazy to me. How do you just abandon your family for a new one?
I mean I almost get it when there's domestic violence involved but the way it's portrayed in dramas is crazy. I can't remember where I saw it but in one of the drama a mother was like "I want to live for *me* now. You understand right" and the kid was like 6.
But anyhoo, I digress haha
Once again the hypocrisy is crazy. There is this prejudice against orphans or non blood relations meanwhile blood relations can be even more toxic and harmful.
There is an SK actor who didn't reveal his son was technically his step son for this same reason: people's criticism. And it's like why do you care?! If the parents are loving and they raise the kids with love, what is your damage?!
This stuff happens in America too. It's so frustrating cause there's so many people who WANT to be parents but can't for whatever reasons and so many people who don't deserve to be parents who are. It's like a cosmic joke

Wrong person to ask this question - I was largely abandoned myself after parents' divorce by both of them, at the ripe age of 3.5... The whole "I want to live for me (and you're getting in the way)" hits all too close to home. That's why you'll never see me advocating for teen marriages. Or marriages in general... Hugely screw this whole "love and family" crap, honestly. I'm quite fine being single - I'm EXTREMELY used to loneliness.
Being wary of outsiders to a certain extent is a thing for any nation or community, it's a natural survival mechanism because back in the day unknown almost certainly meant mortal danger. But most places somewhat grow out of it now with globalization and stuff, while SK, thanks to CENTURIES of hardcore self-isolation, took this concept to a fascinating (morbidly) level. They say to get over a breakup one needs to wait half of the time that relationship lasted - if we apply this method to a whole country, SK WILL get better... in approximately 200 years or so)))

I'm exasperated by IMDb credits for Korean dramas. Often I see voice actors for the dubbed versions credited as the principal actors, while the actors who actually played the roles are either missing or listed as being in just a few episodes. On the page for Seoul Vibe, for instance, the first of the eight actors listed is some guy named Ian Kim, playing "Berkeley" in episodes 9 and 10. Kim Dong-Wook is listed fourth, as "Dongbang Yu-Bin" in "unknown episodes." Seo Hyun-Woo is listed as "Jung Jung-Hwan," but only in episode 1. You get the picture.
I've tried to fix some of these errors, but the process is cumbersome and overwhelming. IMDb supposedly does not permit actors to receive credit for dubbing alternate language versions, but the process of removing someone who shouldn't have received credit requires that you upload all kinds of documentation to support your case.
IMDb's brief bio of Kim Dong-Wook says that he's known for "Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds (2017), Take Off (2009) and The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince (2007)." Those are probably not the shows and movies I would have suggested to people interested in seeing more of his work.
While I realize that many Kdrama fans don't give a rat's patootie about IMDb listings, there are people coming to Korean dramas for the first time who may want to learn more about the shows and actors they enjoyed seeing. I wish IMDb would be willing to work with AsianWiki to make sure they get the correct credits, bios, etc. in their listings of Korean and Japanese tv and movies.

I wonder if there is a way of raising the profile on this as companies/organisations only really feel the need to take these issues seriously when they fear backlash and being labelled institutional racism.
