News bites: October 3, 2024

  • Checking in on the final round of promos for JTBC’s A Virtuous Business ahead of next week’s grand open, it’s another razzle dazzle of colors for our eyes to feast on in the new sneak preview and character posters. Broadcasting in the weekend slot starting October 12, the period comedy will be taking us to the 1990s with Kim So-yeon (Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938) and Yeon Woo-jin (Nothing Uncovered) co-starring alongside Kim Sung-ryung (The Frog), Kim Sun-young (Queen of Divorce), and Lee Se-hee (Bad Prosecutor). [Sports Kyunghyang, TV Report]

  • It’s going to be a double premiere week for JTBC with Family by Choice coming just around the corner as well, launching on October 9 in the Wednesday slot. With Choi Won-young (Hierarchy) and Choi Moo-sung (Your Honor) campaigning for this year’s best dads, grab your tissues and your hankies because the angst is looming near for our trio of siblings-but-not-siblings: Hwang In-yub (Why Her), Jung Chae-yeon (The Golden Spoon), and Bae Hyun-sung (Miraculous Brothers). [JTBC]
  • MBC has been busy with preparation as well, releasing new stills for the upcoming Doubt. Giving us a look into the story’s brighter past, things were once happy for Han Seok-kyu (Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 3), Chae Won-bin (Sweet Home 3), and Oh Yeon-soo (Military Prosecutor Doberman) before everything went terribly wrong. The crime-mystery will be airing weekends starting October 11 next week. [MBC]

  • A new teaser has dropped for Channel A’s merry romance Marry YOU, appointing Jo Soo-min (Penthouse 2) to find a match for Lee Yi-kyung (Marry My Husband) and ensure they tie the knot. Directed by PD Yoon Yeo-chang with co-writing by Lina and Kang Young-hwa, the 12-episode comedy premieres this November. [Newsis]
  • Netflix movie Uprising came out with their official trailer, showcasing what looks to be an epic action story. Starring Kang Dong-won (The Plot) and Park Jung-min (The 8 Show) among quite the heavyweight cast, the Joseon-era sageuk will be releasing on October 11. Production has Kim Sang-man (Midnight FM) directing with scripts by co-penned by filmmaker Park Chan-wook (The Sympathizer, Decision to Leave) and Shin Chul. [News1]
  • Speaking of historicals, tvN released a bundle of stills for the period drama Jeongnyeon – The Star Is Born. Set in post-war South Korea during the 1950s, Kim Tae-ri (Revenant), Shin Ye-eun (The Secret Romantic Guesthouse), Ra Mi-ran (Cold Blooded Intern), Jung Eun-chae (Your Honor), and Kim Yoon-hye (Goodbye Earth) will be due on our screens on October 12, taking hold of the stage as our story’s all-women performing troupe. October/November will be a nice mix of slice of life, nostalgia and comedy. I hope that the 4 on my watchlist make it through the four episode test. Unfortunately for Marry you it has already been relegated to the DNA lover level of fun (before murder took over) just because we all know nothing will get to No gain no love levels of Tom and com. Also for some reason curly hair has to be a feature in a low level comedy to flag up not your typical lead material 😟

I passed on DNA LOVER (apparently a wise decision) and I am looking forward for some nice, clean comedy in little Channel A’s MARRY YOU. You wrote, “it has already been delegated to the DNA lover level of fun…”. I don’t know what that means. I also didn’t watch NO GAIN.
One minute of MARRY YOU hasn’t aired yet. I am assuming Li Yi-kyung will be great in it.

I remember @seeker, Cera we were two of the few from around here who were DARE TO LOVE ME FANS so lightning might strike twice this year.

I sure hope so. 😅😂 Tbh if anybody can deliver in this kind of weird drama it has to be Li Yi-kyung. He not only has the acting chops but also the emotional maturity to walk that fine edge of fun and pathos without devolving into cringe.

@seeker, you are describing Lee Yi-kyung’s performance in KBS’s SECRET ROYAL INSPECTOR 2020 (Amazon Prime). A wonderful performance and one of my favorite dramas of the year. Alas it is unbeanable since it aired back in 2020.

I'm looking forward to watching it more and more every time you mention it! Very soon, hopefully.

Tbh Li Yi-kyung even made uri Kim Myung-soo look good. 🤣🤣🤣

It was an incredibly wise decision

The last two historicals for me. Look at those casts of Uprising and Jeongnyeon.

I'm in for Jeongnyeon – The Star Is Born and Marry YOU if any of the streamers I subscribe to carry both series.

1 and 2) JTBC woke up!

3) Han Seok-kyu is back!

4) Not specially interested by this drama.

5) It kinda reminds me My Country with the 2 leads from a different status.

6) It looks like MBC-TVN's battle won't stop this drama :)

Chae Won-bin is doing a great job looking like she could very well be a sociopath 😬

At this point I’m just ready for most of these dramas to air - seems like the promos have been going forever!

I hated Yeon Woo-jin's character in Thirty-Nine so much, it'll be nice to watch a drama that, hopefully, makes me like him again!

You are surprising me right and left today! 😂 I LOVE YWJ's character in 39! The most considerate thoughtful boyfriend ever!

Haha! I just felt like he was SO UNNECESSARY and took up soooo much screentime. I started calling him Poochie (after the Simpsons reference) because he just kept showing up and inserting himself into scenes.

Give me "Uprising" now! With Park Chan-wook behind the film and the actors are no strangers to sageuks, it's hard to lower expectations.
This is the land version of the Imjin War.

This might have to be my serious sageuk fix until 2025 with TVING’s WON GYEONG apparently now slated to air in January, 2025.

From one film critic, @pierceconran, who watched it at the Busan Film Festival.

"Saw Kim Sang-man’s wickedly entertaining period action-drama UPRISING at #Busan2024 today, produced and co-written by Park Chan-wook and starring Gang Dong-won and Park Jung-min. Sharp and stylish, gripping and gruesome, I kept getting Akira Kurosawa vibes watching it."

Mentioning Akira Kurosawa is the biggest compliment for this film. I'm officially excited. 😂

No. 3. MBC’s DOUBT. It is now on Kocowa’s “Coming Soon” list so I am cautiously optimistic that the F/S ten episode DOUBT will appear on Viki’s “Coming Soon” list. Episode one is one week away on Oct. 11

It’s on Netflix’s list of upcoming shows for October too! Not sure if it will vary by region though.
