News bites: October 1, 2024

  • How better to start the day than with coffee and an also steamy Gong Yoo (The Silent Sea) carefully going through his morning afternoon routine. It’s also time to check the post for our invitations and RSVP to Netflix’s Squid Game 2.  Headlined by Lee Jung-jae (Chief of Staff, The Acolyte) and Lee Byung-heon (Our Blues) among a host of other talents, the new second season will be launching on December 26. • Disney+ is preparing for a tour of Gangnam B-Side, where our guides Jo Woo-jin (Narco-Saints), Ji Chang-wook (Queen Woo), Ha Yoon-kyung (The Frog), and BIBI (The Worst of Evil) are showcased in new character posters. With filmmaker Park Nuri (Money) directing and writing by Joo Won-kyu (Argon), the crime series premieres at the Busan International Film Festival this week and will be released for streaming on November 6 thereafter. [Newsen]

  • After initially considering a 2024 broadcast, tvN’s The Queen Who Crowns (previously Won-kyung) has now reportedly been slated for January 2025. Starring Cha Joo-young (The Real Has Come), Lee Hyun-wook (Song of the Bandits), and Lee Sung-min (A Bloody Lucky), the Joseon-era sageuk completed filming in June and is currently in post-production under the Money Game duo: PD Kim Sang-ho and writer Lee Young-mi. [iZE]
  • In the meantime, tvN is busy with promos for their upcoming lineup, drowning our hero Go Soo (Missing: The Other Side 2) in paperwork in the latest poster for Parole Examiner Lee. Coming to our screens on November 18, the revenge drama also stars Kwon Yuri (Good Job), Baek Ji-won (Connection), and Lee Hak-joo (LTNS). [Newsen]

  • TVING dropped a new poster as well, placing Lee Jun-hyuk (Vigilante) at a crossroads to decide between Dong-jae, the Good or the Bastard. With Park Sung-woong (Dog Knows Everything) co-starring in this Forest of Secrets spin-off, the crime drama will first be available for streaming on October 10 and will then be airing in tvN’s Monday-Tuesday slot starting October 14. [Sports Donga]
  • Speaking of TVING spin-offs, new stills have come out for Spice Up Our Love, where Lee Sang-yi and Han Ji-hyun take the center spotlight after graduating from second leads in the recently concluded No Gain No Love. The fantasy romance premieres on October 3, keeping their story spicy and sweet, but perhaps too short, with a 2-episode count. [Osen]

Gosh the only light hearted one is Spice up your life and I am seriously considering not watching. I can’t see this matching the fun of the original and I don’t want to be disappointed twice.

The trailer looked incredibly fun, but it's also very, very short

Basically, it is just a feature length movie broadcast over two nights- it probably should have just been shown as a film rather than a drama.

I genuinely wonder how Squid Game is gonna be. Part of me thinks people are gonna be so disappointed (like D.P. 2) and the other part thinks people won't particular care as long as it's as violent and interesting as the first one.
A pitfall of D.P. 2 apparently was it felt like a retread which wasn't interesting. The best episode was the most tragic and different.

With Squid Game, I don't know if knowing more about the bad guys would make it more interesting. Part of the mystique is the random unknowns in the costumes or the Front Man (who ended up just a middle man).

Then again, I have no idea what will happen in the show. Maybe seeing the world from other perspectives will be interesting🤷‍♀️

The only way I see SG 2 being different is if the contestants riot and try to overthrow the Front Man and the guards. It would be like a long prison movie. But I think the format will be the same.

The Queen Who Crowns is another saguek I am looking forward to. Since Queen Woo is such a disappoinment, it makes me anticipate this more. I am intrigued with this historical character since I only saw so little of her in dramas about King Taejo.
And Dong Jae will soon be back on the small screen! I can't wait!

The only reliable sageuk actor in this cast is Lee Sung-min. I've never seen the others in a sageuk. Queen Wongyeong has been portrayed before by veteran actresses like Choi Gil, Kang Jung, Park Jin-hee, and more, so I hope this FL is not another Queen Woo.

I sure hope its better than Queen Woo. I would like to think they learn from the mistakes of the former. I'd hate to be disappointed with sagueks I have been waiting for 2 in a row.

I think I'm only going to watch crime shows for a while now, considering how disappointed I am with romances that have ground my heart into the dust off late! So Gangnam B Side, and Parole Officer it will be.
Also, no side couple shenanigans for me- I had enough of them in NGNL 😅

Or perhaps 2 episodes too long.

I'm gonna watch it because it's apart of the No Gain No Love universe but I am a bit bitter about it because I feel like NGNL kinda got shafted. It feels as if NGNL was used to set the sequel/spinoff up and *that's* where the promotion and excitement behind the scenes went (which does make sense cause it's a novel idea in live action). Even viewers kept talking about the spinoff and the second couple more than the original for weeks.

Fine, everyone is allowed their interests and the ships they're drawn to but it still feels kinda unfair to me.

I'm hoping for a Shin Mina and/or Kim Young Dae cameo at least.

I read somewhere that they're slated to appear

I would agree, but this is only two eps and I don't even think it's gonna have any "real life" implications. It's weird how they promoted it making it sound like a real drama.

Some of us just preferred the second couple overall, irrespective of the spinoff. I'm not sure the spinoff is entirely what made people talk about them more. I myself am only as excited about the spinoff as I am because I love the second couple.
