I loved episode 7 and was again amazed how the drama can take a serious situation when Mom was so humiliated (my heart was bleeding) and later releasing all her hidden frustration and pain... and then smoothly turn this situation into a comedy with no problem. Wow.

I'm also loving Chaebol Rich Son more and more, he was so beautifully smitten with Darim. Plus he keeps his straightforwardness and he treats her as a normal girl, that taking her to a cinema was a cherry on top.

Chaebol is coming around, isn't he! The movie date was so thoughtful - hoping we get to see more! It's surprising that SBO Oppa didn't think of taking her out for a movie, nor did her siblings, even though she's clearly said she wanted to go before.

This show knows it's a family comedy at heart, and is sticking to it - that winking 50$ note is the perfect motif for this show.

That's because SBO Oppa is considerate and doesn't want to hurt Darim's feelings... deng... she needs exactly uri Smitten Writer who on her question When was the last time you watched a movie? answers Yesterday. and who immediately asks her if she wants to watch a movie as well and takes her to a cinema. No thinking on her behalf, no pity.

Episode 7 was fun but also revealing.

Possible birth secret? Bom's grandmother knows The Chairman quite well- as she cooks for him- and she has noted a distinct resemblance between him and our Stock and Building Owner Oppa. Perhaps said Oppa inherited his money-making talent from his bio dad?

Our Chairman has a past with our Mom. Humiliating her was obviously revenge for what she had done to him.

Our Grandparents are being haunted by the ghost of the dead burglar. They have decided to put up with it.

I have concluded that our ML's main flaw is his mother. She may not be psychotic, but her childishness seems to know no bounds.

What happens now that Mom has spotted the cash?

So, do we get a step brother reveal soon?!

Chairman was unexpectedly rude - was he angry because she broke up with him before she got married to someone else?

Also, Mom's red face is a little troubling - with everyone else getting health checkups, someone should check in on her.

I'm wondering if burglar is really dead or if it's another scam he's pulling off?

I think the red face is there to symbolise her (peri)menopause period, especially the hot flushes.

Our FL's Oppa would not have been questioning the three 'associates' of our dead burglar if he was not dead- and he even mentioned that an autopsy would be held- so they have the body. This guy was a simple burglar, not a conman.

The fact that he had the money paid back to her as a red envelope gift at the wedding tells us that Mom had dumped him for our FL's dad, and he was mad about it- and still is. But did she really receive that money, which he says he had delivered by someone else or did that other woman run off with it? Is that other woman the mother of our Stocks and Building Owner Oppa? Does this explain why said Oppa does not want to be associated with his bio-dad- because he is ashamed of what his mother did? Please note that he is obviously not associating with her either (of course she could be dead). Remember that our Chairman was traumatized by the betrayal of a woman- we have assumed that the woman in question was Mom, but she may not be the woman in question. He was clearly hurt by Mom, but he may have been betrayed by another woman.

I believe that mom's medical condition may simply be Rosacea which is often found in middle aged or older people. There is no cure but there are treatments that relieve the condition. She really should see a doctor as there is no reason for unneeded suffering.

I like how everything has been laid there from the beginning - SBO Oppa is SBO because he has genes from his father! He is a good businessman. What uri Smitten Writer is not, as clearly demonstrated by his total failure of appreciating the originality of his future Sister IL. That's why Stocks and Building Owner Oppa will have to take over the company eventually... and why he is also the right partner for Charim (Housekeeper Auntie can see it very clearly 🙂).

What was noticeable was - does SBO Oppa know he's a secret chaebol in real life? he seemed to get very flustered when he was quizzed about his likeness.

Given his reaction to that comparison the answer seems to be that he does indeed know- and that this is not good news to him at all.

Required fields are marked *

I was really struck by how hard his stepfather is trying to teach our ML about the fundamentals of his business. "designers are not office workers' should be tattooed to the inside of our ML's eyelids.

The truth is that our ML is only trying to be a businessman for the sake of his childish mom. No one would be more relieved than he if his far more entrepreneurially talented stepbrother suddenly appeared to take his place (except for the Chairman).

Housekeeper Auntie was visibly startled at the idea that SBO Oppa was interested on Da-rim rather than Cha-rim. She can clearly see that Cha-rim and he belong together but does not know that both of them must deal with their personal demons first- until then it would be a colossal mistake.

I forgot to mention that scene with the three bad guys discussing the dead burglar- and their unanimous opinion that he would never have committed suicide. Was he killed by one of them or someone else? We already knew that our FL's Oppa finds the death suspicious. It looks like we get a murder mystery to go with the comedy and romance.

EPISODE 7

1. Of course 60% of this episode was just uri haraboji and his noona being completely adorable and funny.
I love how they just kept taking money everytime they thought of one of their family members and their needs.
If they knew their daughter is getting miseries as her alimony, they probably would've taken something for her.

2. Of course we have a birth secret. LOL
But I like that this means we'll get a future bromance in the show.

3. Since I'm dumb I just realized that mom was going to ask for money to her daughter's boss. Omona. I'm just glad he actually owed her money, and she didn't ask directly to borrow from him.

3.1. Also, is he sure his girlfriend went to the wedding and gave them the money? Mom would remember something like that. I'm sure.

3.2. Mom looked SO pretty in that flashback.

3.3. I felt very bad for mom in that whole scene. He didn't need to treat her like that.
He was ready to humiliate her even before she entered the room. As if he couldn't have just refuse her visit or tell her no politely and move on.

4. It's kinda cute that everyone is ready to attack Crosswalk the second he says the name Da Rim, but it's also annoying me.
What the heck is SPOOppa doing crashing on their date? She's not a kid, bro.

I loved how Crosswalk (he's name is Kang Joon? I genuinely don't remember) got defensive when Bom's grandma said that no guy would date her.

Everyone seems to love Da Rim, but no one sees her as who she is. They all act as if no one would be interested on her, or as if she doesn't have a future, or as if she no one would take her seriously.
Why do halmol and haraboji think that she's going to live forever with her mom? What?

I need Crosswalk to repeat all her qualities and talents to everyone in her family. And to remind Tae Ung that no one can mess with her.

Btw, I love how she was like "bi*ch, I'm going blind here and you're the one asking me for a pep talk?" And he was like "uhmm, yeah" I LOVE THEM.

5. I too liked Cha Rim's outfit.

6. Okay... So rich mom and Bom's grandma (+Crosswalk) have a whole routine, huh?

Then all the families (future in laws) have more or less connections and good relationships. Let's see the development and change of these dynamics when all their kids start dating. Hehe.

It does make him like a dickhead- but he is really just a man who got very badly hurt by mom- and then I suspect by his then girlfriend who did not deliver the money. He was hurt twice (assuming that was what happened) so this emotional response may be mean, but it is not unnatural.

How far are the people in this drama going to take their hurt feelings? No one seems to be able to deal with anything without being emotionally stunted forever.

1

Replying to your other comment, I actually think dad treated her like that because of bad experiences while growing his business.

Or maybe there's a misunderstanding about her lying to him about something. I wouldn't be surprised if the ex who didn't give her the money back is the one to blame about that.

I just hope they don't go with the "omo she didn't chose me because I was poor" kind of resentment or some dumb thing as if he was a teenager and not a grown ass man.

1

But it may not be about her. I mean, about something from all those years ago.
I think it could be that this is the way he treats people now, because everyone's trying to get something from him.

When he started talking my first impression was "he is his wife's husband". It reminded me of the way she treated Bom's grandma.

But dramas do love their annoying decades old misunderstandings, so Idk.

Ep 7 continues to be such a delight delivering laughter and heartbreak in equal measure.

Can the grandparents be more adorable? Their non-stop questions to their new found wealth, especially how it should be used and who receive for what purposes, are really a pleasure to watch. I do hope they can somehow keep the money to the end (or use some of it wisely).

Mom going through the humiliation at the Chairman’s office is hard to watch. I’m however pleased that it’s not a straight case of asking for money but getting back a loan. The Chairman is so ready for giving her a ‘treat’ in the meanest possible way. The flash back to their college days is lovely with both, surprisingly, looking quite the part. I’m quite sure the man loved her in those days although whether Da-rim’s mom is the woman who lied to him is unclear.

So, the laundry oppa is more than likely the Chairman’s son. My theory at this point is that he’s the love child between the Chairman and the ‘girlfriend’ who was asked to return the loan money / wedding gift to DR’s mom. That woman may not have returned the money and / or she’s the friend of mom who eventually take on the son under her wing. Birth secret could be a fun game in family drama.

And progress with our lead couple with movie and popcorn! These are are people honest with their feelings and they express them without reservation. How refreshing! I just love Da-rim’s straight-fowardness about what she likes and doesn’t. Our ML is totally besotted and very impressive in defending Da-rim. Love every word he said about her.

When checking this drama’s rating, I note that the nation-wide rating for all episodes are higher then Seoul’s ratings. This is the opposite to the trendy dramas commonly watched by Beanies. Is it a norm for family dramas?

Can’t wait for Ep 8 as DR seems to be getting the eye treatment!!

You're spot on about the right balance this drama is striking - comedy + +

ML is completely (and appropriately) blind to her weaknesses (which everyone else is dancing around), and it's charming to watch. He's besotted by her for the right reasons - no pity this time around. 'You haven't watched a movie in years? okay, let's go for one!' - as straightforward as that.

So many things happened in these two episodes.

Again, I will always say how much I love the dynamics between our main couple. But I need them alone. Taewoong was really getting in the way. Specially at the restaurant. I didn't like the whole talk abou how "I'm going to choose your boyfriend" for Darim.

He keeps treating her like a child and a sister and doesn't even seem capable to consider that she might have feelings for him.

The scene, in episode 8, with our grandparents and Bonghee digging the second bag was so funny. Our grandmother couldn't stop yapping.

It seems that Darim will be getting her vision back (if they don't pull a plot twist) waay earlier than I tought. I was guessing this would only happen in the 15 or 16 episode.

I hope this shows speeds up a bit because it’s getting boring. I want to see more of the ML and FL and less of the other characters.
The grandparents are cute but there is too much of them. There cuteness would be better in small dosage.
The Chairman is a weird character. I find him odd. His wife is a bit of an airhead but she is at least fanny.
Taewoong treats DaRin like a baby and mostly ignores her. To be the third wheel on their date was insensitive, specially after DaRim reminded him how he falls asleep in movies. Dude, get the message!
I don’t think he is protecting DaRim but possessive of her. Basically, he doesn’t want her nor wants anyone else to want her. He is getting to be an annoying character.

This is the standard tempo for weekend family dramas in that there are multiple (at least three) generations of characters / stories. Main couple would roughly be 20-25% screen time.

4
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

What was wildly wrong with the last two weekenders was that far too much time was spent on the main couple and their story which essentially froze out the other stories. A Weekender is really an ensemble show with the main couple's story serving as the scaffolding around which the other stories are built. So far, this weekender has avoided that mistake.

I kinda want Cha Rim to keep SBOO busy, because he's annoying me with his " protective oppa" act. Da Rim was done with him in that scene at restaurant too.

We got some clarification on the birth of our Stocks and Building Owner Oppa. It turns out that his baby momma dumped him off at an orphanage right after his birth- and ran off to America. This happened after he dumped her. This Oppa does not know that he is the Chairman’s son and even the Chairman did not know he had a son until he received an email from the now dying birth mother.

But what a contrast with previous weekenders. We saw a wonderful scene of Mom and Grandparents actually putting themselves into danger in order to save Da-rim’s eyes- after our ML stupidly burns the laundry down. The sight of such caring parents is so different from what we saw the previous year. Da-rim gets her miracle after all.

Am I remembering correctly, did I hear that SBO Oppa's mom was a bar hostess? Chairman has interesting taste in partners: gangster's daughter, bar hostess. Not our usual chaebol set up.

I am really enjoying the actor playing the Chairman - who I will always think of as Gaksital Sr. He was the perpetual straight man to everyone's crazy...right up until he got a (well deserved) pillow to the back of the head.

Yes- apparently the FL's mom is the only respectable girl he ever dated. This may explain part of why he still holds a grudge.

It also occurred to me that we are too used to the idea of our Chaebols having inherited wealth and with it the attitudes we often associate with that wealth. This Chairman was once as poor as anyone else in this drama. He built his wealth from the ground up. Bar Hostess and Loan Shark's daughter were the girls he was likely to meet back then- not some heiress.

I was glad that Episode 8 showed us also the good sides of Darim's family. They are still the same, like Charim is still curt and brief, but with that same shortness she demands access to her grandparents in the hospital.... Aunt as well is loudly demanding to be with her family... and Police Oppa, who doesn't say much, is silently comforting Mom while she is waiting during Darim's surgery.

Ep 8 - what a roller coaster! I almost screamed when that stupid fire started. Life is harsh, isn’t it - luckily there’s bag #2.

How consistent is the Iron Family as mom follows the diatom that only those who took the money would be jailed!

I love how they breezily took us to the surgery and very happy Da-Rim will see again next week. Phase 2, bring it on!

Will we be getting a Romeo & Juliet here? And treasure hunt of the gangsters and ML’s mom? How far would the birth secret bring to the fore? Would the bio-and-cancer mom re-surface? What would be the eventual relation between DR’s mom and the Chairman? So much to look forward to.

After chaebol dad humiliated mom, his son burns down her business. And her family steals mom's money but his son sets it on fire.

No fooling about that- no way should that bottle have been in a spot where it can be kicked over by anyone. In the Navy we had an expression for it: 'Gear adrift". Gear adrift was treated as a serious shipboard matter because it does not take much at all for a serious accident to happen when gear is adrift. Just a few years ago the US Navy lost a major helicopter landing ship (basically a small aircraft carrier) due to a fire that started in a manner not much different from what we saw in this laundry fire. That fire came about because of gear adrift- or at the very least became a major fire because of it.
