Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (September 21, 2024)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

Currently covering: Black Out

Love Next Door: WOW that was a lot of crying, and most of it more exhausting than cathartic. Funny how the emotions were a big part of what roped me in initially, but now I feel like I’m just trudging through them and hoping they’ll let up soon. There’s just a lot of shouting and blaming and speaking for each other, and not nearly enough listening to try and understand how each other feels. And then when we finally get a few moments of levity, it feels jarring and out of place (except the spoons on the eyes thing — for whatever reason, that actually had me cackling). The most egregious example being one of my favorite emotional moments of the week — Dan-ho and Mo-eum’s heart-to-heart leading up to the kiss — that was then totally undercut by her smacking him in the face for no reason. Head-butting aside, though, Mo-eum is my favorite character, and my other favorite moment this week was her hugging Seok-ryu instead of yelling at her like everyone else did. I understand the point the show was making, but I think it could have made that point in a much better way.

Currently covering: Perfect Family

Cinderella at 2AM: It’s a nice change to see a trope that’s been trotted out a million times with a new spin. A chaebol heir and a normal, down-to-earth female lead — you know you’ve seen this one. The hero seems naive yet sweet, and the heroine is mature, flawed, and likable. Looking forward to see where this show goes.

COMPLETED
Romance in the House - Nice wrap-up to everyone's stories. Sweet couples in a sweet show!

Perfect Family - I think this show was so in love with how it told the story that every new episode was just 'AHA! Uno-reverse!' until the reversals lost all meaning. Might have enjoyed it more if I liked Sun-hui as a character. At least the parents were amazing.

Good Partner - Stuck the landing beautifully, with two wholesome episodes last week and then a nice finale yesterday (though somebody should give poor Kim Jun-han an actual romance next time!). Really well-written show. Go Ah-sung's cameo was cute.

ONGOING
Black Out - Deok-mi's true colours will come out this week. Can't wait for more loss of faith in humanity 😑…

Mom's Friend's Son - I watched the episodes after reading the recap. Maybe because I'd vicariously vented at the entitled twerp ML already, I didn't mind where we ended up. The leads deserve each other lol.

No Gain, No Love - So nice to see characters just say that they like someone/want to date them instead of waffling and agonising for weeks. So curious how Lucifer and Mr. Volunteer are going to handle next week.

Seoul Busters - These episodes felt really slow - like the case went on forever when the perpetrator was obvious. I think the funny scenes also go on for too long. Next week looks more exciting at least.

WATCHLIST
Planning to try out the The Judge from Hell. I feel like there'll be no midway with this show - it'll either be amazing or amazingly terrible.

C-DRAMAS
Love of Nirvana started with quite an opening sequence. Only 3 episodes in but nice to see the ML a bit of a departure from the norm. Will try to catch up over the weekend.

Debating whether or not to watch Black Out. "more loss of faith in humanity" makes me think I should probably binge it when I'm in the mood to go completely dark.

I definitely think you need to be in a specific mood to tolerate the terrible, no good, awful people of that village! Watching this is like that Ross meme from Friends - "this is not good for my rage" 😤.

Well so far (up to Ep.6), without spoilers, it's more of political intrigue/ power play between ML and 2ML and the FL gets unfortunately entangled in it. What's different so far is the ML being more callous than is usual in c-dramas. I'm enjoying the enemies-on-all-sides vibes of it!

Live watches

No gain, no love
💛The highlight of my week. Each week I try to wait so I can watch the two episodes back to back on a Tuesday but I fail miserably because I am literally watching the clock to press play on a Monday afternoon.

Love next door
I am looking forward to this week’s episodes to see where this drama takes us, it is always an interesting watch.

DNA lover
😬This has become disappointing because the second female lead character is annoying me and she is everywhere and there is the unwanted element of a hint of a killer lurking in the background.

Cinderella at 2AM
The couple have spent a lot of time in misery due to the unwanted break up so I am hoping we will see them have some fun times this week as they are good together. The work place team members have not shown any competence in the work place and rarely use their initiative so I am not sure why they have been promoted.

Tiger with wings - Japanese
🥰I have come to love this show and I am very disappointed that we only have 10 episodes left. It has been a truly epic historical drama showing how the changes in culture have influenced the political and legal systems through the lived experiences of the main character’s journey from a teenager into a grandmother.

Umi no Hajimari - Japanese
🥲Such a bittersweet story. I really don’t know how it will end next week but I feel it has realistically shown the many facets of becoming a parent by choice including single parenthood and blended families. I struggled with the aftermath of Umi’s mum’s death because of the choices she made when she was alive and I feel the same with Umi’s dad’s choices at times. I hope that the drama ends well whatever the outcome because it has been such a beautiful story.

Hikaru Kimi e -Japanese
😮 A historical drama that I am loving despite the political elements. It is showing the struggles of the people outside the palace and so many elements of the author’s life were included in The tale of Genji. I hope they show that she stretched the story due to the money it brought in because that story was ridiculously long (72 hours on Audible) I am worried I will be left hanging as this series started in January and runs an episode a week for 48 episodes so most of the episodes have been out for months but I only have access to 16 with subtitles.

Binge watch corner
Two outs in the Nineth Inning
Decided to watch this often mentioned oldie. It is going to be a slow watch due to the bite sized 6 chunks per episode with the multiple ads between each chunk on YouTube. It is not the drama that will make me pay the premium price to avoid the ads, but it is ok so far.

Book corner
Talking to strangers - Malcolm Gladwell
Fascinating listen on what influences our perspectives on others. Really interesting presentation style on Audible with podcast style clips from interviews, police radio audio, and it has a theme song.

A tale for the Time Being - Ruth Ozeki
This seems to be the...

Buddhist equivalent of Sophie’s world, using fiction as a means to introduce Buddhist ideas. It covers some VERY heavy themes; pimping a school girl, school and military training bullying, suicide, the Fukushima disaster etc. suffice to say I was not expecting it to be this dark. I am half way through and hoping for brighter times!

What a shame it is so cut!
I think I managed to watch it during good old mysoju days. 🙂

4

I know that "two outs in the ninth inning' is the proper translation of the title but to me it will always be NINE ENDS TWO OUTS. Somehow it just seems to be a more fitting way of showing the uniqueness of this very greatest of all 'friends to lovers' stories.

6

@oldawyer since I don't understand baseball neither title makes ANY sense to me🫤

4

@oldawyer It's another crazy English title. It's supposed to mean Bottom of the 9th, 2 Outs, which, in most baseball games is the last "out" before the game is over (unless there's a tie, in which case, the game continues).

7

@zindigo
Thanks for the explanation. It totally makes sense, once watched the drama.

4

@IsaGC You're welcome!

@oldawyer, my apologies. My comment should have been directed to @Reply1988 😬

3

No offense taken. I am simply glad that you are sharing your thoughts.

3

“Two outs in the bottom of the ninth” is a metaphor meaning a do-or-die situation. Time’s running out, and if you miss this last chance, then you lose. I haven’t seen the show—does this meaning have anything to do with the story?

Big baseball fan here. My team is going to the postseason! ⚾️😄

2

@babylilo

Yes, the title makes sense once you know the characters, their backstory and their fears (mainly FL's but also others).

2

Oh, you are reading A Tale for the Time Being! Yes, it's DARK... it made me quite depressed during pandemic. But the thing I really liked about that book was its sense of place - it really makes you "live" both timelines of both the protagonists. Let me know how you interpret the ending. If you are covering this in beanie book club, then tag me too please. I have been searching some books to read and none have that sense of place and lightness/ brightness/ hopefulness at the same time. I tried reading Hwang Sok-yong's At Dusk and Princess Bari, but alas, I am not ready for political commentary.. just looking for everyday characters who draw me into their worlds.

What is the next book for the club? Maybe it'll work for me 😄

Thank you 🙂. I think I'll sit this one out. The trigger material really sounds like a warning to me 😅

1

I just got my hands on a copy of Almond. It's very compelling so far.

1

Do all the DB book picks have English translations, @Reply1998?

3

@sunnyboo yes all the books in the book club so far have either been originally written in English or translations as most of us can’t read Korean. We will be voting on the next batch of books for next year as we have one left from the original poll but I assume the future books will need to be in English too.

2

I can’t imagine reading it during the pandemic it would have pushed me over the edge as I was already super stressed working in child mental health during that time🫤

I will get back to you on my views on the ending.

Sometimes when I listen to books it feels like the author is adding in material because they found it interesting when they were researching the topic. I am getting annoyed with the insertion of some material in this book for that reason e.g. on the climate issues. I think it is intentional because it reflects some of the local characters’ patronising attitudes towards the main character so it may be that the tone is spot on for that which is why it is so annoying for me to listen too especially as her husband is one of the most annoying know it alls.

3
7
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, that is why I was depressed. And my memories of it are REALLY vague now 😅. I just remember the ending clearly, and yes, that her husband was annoying 😅. But the self-sacrifice part in Nao's narrative is really important for both stories. I like that the novel presents self-sacrifice as a cultural value rooted in Japanese history... I won't give you spoilers about the ending.. which is the only thing I remember 😅

1

@anne18 yes the historical elements with the nun grandmother and her son’s story etc. have been the better parts. The local gossip/small town mentality is frustrating because it feels racist. There are too many comments from the conversation about the house that had been owned by the Japanese family before they were sent to the internment camp to the fears of the pollution from the disaster.

2

@anne18 I finished the book. The author read the anudiobook and said that she had added different elements to each format of the book. The written format had pictures and footnotes that were not in the audiobook. I do assume that the fantasy/metaphysical explanation was the same in both versions. I think the ending fitted with my theory that it was a novel with Buddhist themes running through it. I think I would have preferred the story if it had focused on the great grandmother and would have been a Pachinko style generational story focused on how the great grandmother lived through the multiple historical events and became a nun. She could have told the story to help her granddaughter learn to overcome the horrific experiences learning about her faith and family strengths. That would have kept the Buddhist ideas front and centre and missed out the annoying detour into small minded island life. Environmental issues would have still come up but without the patronising.

I will not be exploring any of the author’s other books as I chose this one as it sounded the most interesting.

1

@reply1988 Oh, then you see it as magical realism in the end (which I think was as the author really intended). But I don't know whether it was because I didn't know the author's background as a Buddhist priest, or whether I wanted to assign some meaning to it just to think I haven't wasted my time and been depressed for nothing 😆... I had a quite different take. I didn't think of it as means to introduce Buddhist ideas (I found them interesting, but they didn't attract my attention much) and didn't think the connection between the diary and the author was magical. As the idea of "self-sacrifice" introduced in the diary caught my attention.. I suspected (as "I saw" the author's husband also did in the end) that the author had made up the whole story about "finding" the diary. My theory says 😅.. she had been writing that diary all along. While like you, I found Nao's narrative (especially her grandmother) more interesting, I empathised with the author more. I think it was because I was caught in a covid lockdown here and slowly seeping into this feeling of being holed up in an unproductive place, just like the author. I saw her making repeated "self-sacrifice" by prioritizing first her mother's, then her husband's health over her own writing, and I thought it left her with deep subconscious dissatisfaction as a creative person. All her time caring for her mother and her dying in the end must've taken a toll on her, and her husband was an ungrateful a-hole. And I thought as the author's deep desire of prioritising self (and her mental health) was manifesting itself in form of Nao's story... and the husband realised that it was directed at him in the end (as I saw it 😆).
I don't remember clearly, but didn't Nao comment on how everybody was so aware about mental health in the US and how people of Japanese origin had a tendency to suppress their mental health needs to put up a brave front for their family until it all imploded (like her and her father). That part striked a chord with me as an Asian (I am not Japanese, but I guess that trait runs here too 😅). I saw the author doing the same.. so I just assumed that the diary was all her pent up feelings coming up 😆. Of course, this may be my own far-fetched interpretation, but the only way the weird connection makes any sense to me.

The ebook had footnotes about the Schrodinger cat experiment.. and I thought it was just was a filler like you felt felt about many other elements... Not a perfect novel anyway, and VERY depressing through most of it (I had to choose the worst possible time to read it, of course 🙄)

Can I vote for the next batch of novels too? 😅

1

@reply1988 Many Asian societies prioritise the family, the community and the society over the individual, so the glorification of self-sacrifice (and the subsequent consequences on that individual's mental health) is really a thing here.

2

I have recently finished the book I went to see my father by Kyungsook Shin, I have listened to a few of her books now and I think there are some writers that it feels like the narrator is based on them so it’s hard to see it as a fictional piece. I knew this author was a Zen priest and from a Canadian Japanese background and her mum was Japanese therefore I felt the only really fictional elements were the Nao story and the rest were areas of interest shoehorned into a story with too much mansplaining. It just isn’t my style of storytelling, it was also tooooooo dark with the explicit details of the many elements of bullying. The author/reader concept although it should have been interesting by that point I just didn’t care enough. I haven’t read Proust so all the references to him were lost on me.
I listened to the end but I felt it limped home because I was disengaged.

The bookclub polling details will be mentioned on Open thread and posted on a fanwall so it will be open to anyone. We just tag the beanies who expressed an interest at the time we discussed a book club. Lots of the original DB bookclub beanies dropped out due to busyness but new beanies have signed up to be tagged so I will add you to tag list as there is no obligation to respond.

1

Yes, too much narration and too little world-building can be off-putting in fiction.
Thanks for adding me to the book club 👍🙂

I know right! I am looking at my list of top ten dramas and trying to work out what I can take out to get NGNL in. The only way I can do it is to remove one of the genres that are not pure rom com even if they are all dramas that I would happily recommend to anyone. My top ten dramas are mainly feel good dramas with great characters and lots of laugh out loud moments so this feels like a no brainer add in. I have not enjoyed a pure rom com so much for a loooooooooooooong time.

6

I think this has got a lot to do with the quality fo the show and whether we have time to dissect it. I usually binge watch shows that have already been green lit by people who watched it live. So I know I'm going in to a good show to begin with. Plus, when I can just play the next episode, I do not spend much time critically observing each episode. In live watch I tend to dissect i lt because there's a lot of time till the next episode airs and suffices my curiosity.

4

Which is why even if my favorite shows were binge watched, I probably would trust the ratings I give when I live watched the show.

2

I have to admit I might have been a happier drama watcher in the early years when I was mostly binge watching.

This makes me a little sad to read--which is probably only me-oriented, sorry--but I'd like to put out there that it might also be a normal evolutionary step for a Beanie.

It's one thing to read from afar and then join in...it's another to understand what it takes to stay in the conversation. And that is often quite difficult. I look to @midnight and @bbstl (and others) frequently for models.

2

@attiton
I'm not sure I understand your comment... would you please clarify?

1

I'm only suggesting that engaging with Dramabeans can change one's relationship to live-watching and binge-watching. If what I say doesn't jibe with your experience, you are welcome to simply ignore it.

1

@attiton

Ahhh... I wasn't taking offense at your comment, I just genuinely didn't understand it. 🤗

I agree. Engaging with any comment forum definitely alters the experience of watching a drama live. I binge watched k-dramas for well over a year before I read anything extensive online... just followed actors/writers/directors as my mood struck. I was actually using IMDB to find them hahaha! When I eventually found MDL, I was shocked at how different my opinions were on some of my beloved dramas 😮 The frequently harsh comments there are really a turn off, so I was so glad to find Drama Beans last year.

It's always fun when most of us are loving a particular drama we're all live-watching, and often interesting when opinions vary but offer fresh perspectives. Definitely a bummer to love something that nobody else does but what's nice about DB is not feeling the need to defend oneself. Beanies are thoughtful about their comments. ❤️

5

I keep putting off dramas like Two Outs in the Nineth Inning because I think it's about sports. I guess I'm an "indoor girl" so sports themed dramas are a turn-off for me. Especially if it's about wrestling or baseball... snooze fest... I don't know why I'm this way! But I do like soccer for some reason, and there's almost never any dramas about that.

I have watched a few dramas about baseball players, managers etc. and the same with office based dramas like Miseang and The good manager where a particular industry or department may be setting but is just a background to the actual story. Any of the specifics that make sense to game lovers or experts in that field may go over my head but the main story has always been interesting.

One of my favourite J dramas Worst to first: A teen baseball miracle was based on a true story about a small town school baseball team that went from only having one player to being good enough to make it to the finals of the most prestige school baseball event. I love coming of age dramas and it really focused on the boys and their coach overcoming their individual challenges and learning to be a team which resulted in them building life long relationships.

Exactly, they are sooooooooooo hard to locate and when you do find them it’s a weekly stress waiting to see if the episode will drop that week or next and when it does then enduring another wait for the subs to be added. I know these are not big issues in the scheme of things but I hate open loops so if I get part way through and they stop releasing subbed episodes it is very disappointing.

It is a shame that Netflix and Viki don’t seem to pick up all the standout dramas although they have some good ones in their offer.

The other hard to find dramas are O’PENing and KBS drama specials which are usually very good too.

1

ICYMI, you can find most recent jdramas through the ancient but quite easy to use "d-addicts jdrama fansub map". other option is Drama-Otaku, though that requires registration.

It's actually never been easier to find (recent) jdramas because more people than ever are fansubbing and their blogs or sites are quite easy to track down. DO is also an one-stop, centralized place to find 'em, I'll never stop singing their praises. The map also makes searching much easier.

Older Japanese dramas and movies are a different story. Sometimes they're off the internet altogether, or only on certain "streaming sites" in 144p.
Do let me know if you need to finding older media, or anything Japanese, I'll do my best to help! :)
Good part of having membership in private Asian trackers is that I can help people access media, no matter how obscure, in (usually) decent quality.

2

Thank you very much, Dylan! So kind of you :)

I'm so used to finding almost everything easily on streaming platforms!

I'll try the sites you mentioned. It's good to know new ways to watch dramas.

I like your drama descriptions and the categories you have. I also admire your appetite for historical Japanese dramas! Nice to see you enjoying and writing about the recent J-dramas you're watching because I'm so deep into K-dramas that watching shows from other countries shocks my system too much now. But I started watching J-dramas and know there's still good stuff being made. I think I have some sort of ADHD when it comes to dramas and so historical dramas or anything that requires more patience and thinking is lost on me.

I am not sure I would be interested in any other historicals but Tiger with wings is modern history so it shows the Japan of the 1930’s onwards. I am not sure how close to current times they will get to by the time the series finishes. i love BBC period dramas like the Jane Austen classics and Call the Midwife so these two elements of Japanese history have been interesting to watch.

No Gain No love: I did not know this drama was a 12er. So, we are more than halfway through. The subway PPL and avocado discussion reminded me of when there used to be more restaurant variety. I recently did a rewatch of Secret Love, courtesy of a recent reminder(ha), and they had TGIF PPL. I remember thinking even then, oooh how random. I also remember the Papa Johns era. Ahhhh PPL, which reminds me of Be Melo, lol. Tangent complete.

Seoul Busters: It was boring. I didn’t even chuckle this time. So, it is a drop for me. Hopefully, we will get more Wed-Thurs dramas.

Good Partner: Nicely wrapped up and a good ending to a really good show. However, NJH and P.O. had no chemistry, lol, that was the only odd thing. But it wasn’t about them, so it didn’t really matter in that sense.

BlackOut: The temerity, audacity, gall, gumption, and sheer arrogance of these people is BREATHTAKING. What gutter, garbage, and toxic landfill people. Just awful. Geoh Oh and Deok Mi didn’t even do anything, but their coverup of these crimes is diabolical. I am shocked every time at how awful these people are.

The Judge from Hell: I look forward to this!!

Love Next Door: Maybe there will be some romantic movement, maybe we will continue to meander, who knows. I am the fool who keeps watching, ha.

You know, everyone is saying how unbelievable the community in Black Out is... but the past year I experienced a similar type of situation where a neighbor's son was causing trouble for us and instead of teaching him how to behave, he protected his son and told lies. It was horrible. It made me lose faith in humanity, especially after having just lost my own dad. So yes, parents will almost always stand on the side of their children even when they're wrong. I've seen this play out in divorces too. No matter how close you are to your in-laws, when you get a divorce, they will stand on the side of their child. This is an unfortunate fact of human nature.

Currently Watching
I'm behind on Seoul Busters and No Gain No Love... I may wait and watch the last five eps all in one go. On the other hand, I've started a rewatch of The Matchmakers, which is just as lovely as the first time.

In other news...: Mom breezed through Marry My Husband and really enjoyed it. She thought it was dark with the villains but found the revenge satisfying. She called it "delicious," and said the ML was "so good" - she found Na In-woo "adorable" and "sweet" (so do I!!)

Finished
Romance in the House: What a lovely surprise this drama was! Over the course of twelve episodes, we saw relationships being mended, families being strengthened, and individuals finding their purpose - their vocation - and what they really want in life. Parent-child relationships were central to the story, and we got to see them get stronger and better. The last episodes were so nice. Seeing both dads get into a dad argument about how great their adult children are was great. Seeing Mi-rae ask her dad to change a light bulb was a great moment. Seeing Tae-pyung talk things out with his dad was great. And can I praise how well the show handled the dating rumors in the office??? No noble idiocy and breakup; FL's coworkers extending understanding; and that passive-aggressive clap-back at those bitter haters with her team having her back! Well done!!! Finally, I really liked how Mi-rae and Tae-pyung's relationship was built on mutual respect, understanding, and communication.

Welcome to Samdalri: I loved this!!! Shin Hye-sun was excellent, and really made me connect with her character. I shed more than a few tears for her journey. This is my kind of healing drama. Her FL is a dragon raised in a small stream, who rises to fame, but is forced to retreat to her hometown due to the venomous lies of her poisonous assistant. This "villain" was scary because of how evil she was and how easily she achieved her goals at first. But, this didn't stress me out, because not only was this the necessary origin story for how our heroine rediscovers and comes back to her true self and the things in life she truly loves, but it also serves to illustrate how she has a defensive bulwark of family and friends. Even at her lowest, she is not truly alone, nor without allies. I just love...

...her sisters and niece; they were such fun, and I liked that they got their own stories. Her friends (and Yong-pil) were also ready to defend her no matter what, trusting her completely even though they haven't seen her in years. The real joy and draw in this drama, along with the themes of rediscovering yourself and coming back from failures, was the love story between Sam-dal and Yong-pil. Born on the same day, growing up together as friends, turning into more than friends, we meet them again when they've been broken up for eight years. But their ties span decades, and they know each other better than they know themselves, so they can't keep their distance for long... especially in a small town. I loved how their story unfolding in the present was interwoven with glimpses into their past. This allowed for layers of their motivations, feelings, and memories to be revealed gradually, instead of mashing together an approximation of all these things at once by repeated flashbacks to one or two big "keys to the past" scenes like some dramas do. Ji Chang-wook was fantastic as Yong-pil, who's always had his heart set on Sam-dal, and whose loyalty and faithfulness are a constant as Sam-dal heals from her hurts. The theme of enduring love was beautifully illustrated through a variety of relationships, both romantic and not. The ending is cathartic and satisfying. This is now in my top-ten, and I highly recommend it.

Sorry, since this is the second what we’re watching week in a row suggesting that those of us who didn't like this drama were somehow under a bad influence of others or of timing, and that if we saw without that bad influence, we'd really love it. I have to defend my response to this show.

I am not attacking you or those who liked it, at all, I'm just saying in my perception of the leads had no chemistry whatsoever--the only emotionally intimate moment between them, I recall, was when they were talking separated by a wall. Any other moment was purposely sabotaged by the writer. (or maybe by the wishes of the actors themselves?)

So that leaves the healing--now, I am well aware that what heals some people can hurt others, based on personal experiences, so again I am not suggesting those who were healed by this show were wrong.

But for me, with its forced, manipulative sentimentality this show at times was like fingernails grating on a chalkboard. (I know nobody remembers chalkboards anymore, but as a former teacher, I certainly do!).

In fact, let me describe my experience of the show: I found it like drinking too much pumpkin-spiced beer, and falling comatose with my head on the table, cushioned only by a tea cozy labeled Home Sweet Home, waking with a splitting headache and seeing my grandmother wearing a wetsuit, involved in a shrieking hair pulling fight with another octogenarian, then glancing over to witness my cute niece coloring with crayons the skin of a live dolphin in a fish tank, while my brother clapped his hands like a seal and grinned goofily like a simpleton, my Dad screamed spittle flecked curses at me, and my neighbor revved his Lamborghini in my living room. I was not healed by that vision.

8

Thank you for sharing your experience, @hacja. It's nice to see a diversity of reactions and preferences. My reference to timing was twofold: watching it right now was right timing for my watching mood; and I know when it was airing, for as many people who liked it, there were more who didn't. So I recognize I'm in the minority opinion here. For as much as you hated it, I can only hope you dropped it instead of suffering through!

5

I watched Welcome to Samdalri when it was airing. It's been interesting seeing how it was received sort of poorly when it was airing compared to the reactions of those who have picked it up as a binge. I'm so glad for your lovely review. I hope more people will give it a chance or revisit it after reading it.

It's not in my top dramas. I felt the initial episodes weren't done well, but the drama really did get so much better by the second half once the themes of the drama became more clear. There were so many moments that it would be a shame to miss.

You're right, it's so interesting how reactions can differ a lot based on when a drama is watched! I hope more people try it out, it was really lovely and just what I needed right now. I think that the script was kind of "meh," but the excellent cast and good directing elevated it and made it work for me. Yes, the themes were really well done, particularly in the second half. I love a good drama with clear themes! 😄

me too, I stopped somewhere in the first episode. and for the dumbest reason: I wasn't interested in the FL's job. I couldn't connect with her. And the story seemed like something I've seen before. And your praise of Welcome to Samdalri has me putting it back on my watch list and I will give it another try. I have my reservations about it: I don't like FL in rom-com because she's intense and stresses me out but I love her in thrillers and police/investigative/crime/legal. But anyways I'm going to give it another chance thanks to you.

Recent Dramas:
My Sweet Mobster: (slightly more than 14 episodes in) I have never seen a drama that so obviously should have been 12 episodes. I really love it when the leads are cutting through the misconceptions, when Hong-gi is comforting the orange-haired creator, when Ji-hwan is being tentative and polite, basically anytime the Thirsty Deer’s two most attractive employees (by their own accounts) are on screen, and when the TD’s actual most attractive employee (Lee Joon) shows up to be ridiculous and amazing. But I like it less whenever I’m supposed to care about the SML (was it mean to hope that he would stay unconscious longer after he was hit with the brick?), whenever the ML stops communicating about anything, when our poor maknae deer gets blamed by a violent vigilante for a murder that was actually an accident, and when the FL boldly strides into situations and makes them way worse for everyone. I didn’t dislike the second couple as much as I was prepared to based on the recaps, but they obviously could have handled that better too. Still, I’m here to watch people get stabby at the end, to see our leads’ conclusion, and most importantly to send uri deerlings off well.

Older Dramas:
Happiness: (8 episodes in) I got super busy this week so we didn’t really watch ahead of the community watch. My husband is no longer that into it, but will still finish it with me. But I’m still really loving it! Korea does society’s descent into chaos so well and I really like it here too. Our leads are obviously amazing and I’m still finding LC Han as interesting as I was before. Whenever Sae-bom loses her temper and twists someone’s arm back or slams them on a table it is sooo satisfying. Whenever I encounter a truly awful character I’m going to imagine her absolutely silencing them with her withering glances and cool moves. As ever: I hope Seo-yoon makes it through this show.

Live Watches
Mom’s Friend’s Son/Love Next Door: I’m glad ex-fiance bowed out and did it quite gracefully this week. I’m not sure if I have a higher tolerance for angst in a romcom (almost definitely true) or if I just had fewer expectations going into this drama, but I’m one of the few still enjoying it. I like our leads and am excited to see them start to explore what they could be to each other now that they have closure and secrets are out. And I could even excuse the dead fish kiss between the second leads (I think I would have been shocked too!) especially since I laughed so much at Mo-eum trying to sneak away only to be foiled by the fact that she lives next door!

Fragile (2): Even more like Skam than the first episode, as beyond just adapting the story, they also literally adapt specific scenes. This episode also introduces the rest of the characters, and it becomes very clear very quickly that not a single character here is original. All of them are based off a Skam character, and the core personalities of them appear to be largely intact. Honestly, the biggest change so far is that they replaced the Muslim character with a Southeast Asian character. From a western perspective, it's interesting how she literally states "to Western people we look alike", and I do think there's a sense of truth to that. I appreciate the show keeping the racism theme intact here, as I think it's an important theme for a show like this to touch upon. I really liked this second episode, and I'm already loving the growing friendship between the girls, and I can't wait to see more of that.

Good Partner (15-16): Drama of the year! Or at least so far. You know that empty feeling you get when you finish a drama you really loved? Yeah, I'm definitely feeling that right now. I just loved seeing these characters grow, and ultimately live their best lives. The cases were consistently great as well, and the show even managed to deliver some wise advice and inspirational life lessons along the way too. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it broke my heart as often as it warmed it, and it just made me fall in love with everything.

Perfect Family (11-12): This show might've been imperfect, but I very much enjoyed the ride. I'm very satified with the ending overall. They might've caused me a lot of stress, but I'm going to miss this imperfect perfect family.

No Gain No Love (7-8): With the spin-off coming up, I'm pretty curious where this drama will leave off the story of the second leads. Will they have a conclusion here, or will they leave it open ended and save the actual conclusion for the spin-off? Regardless, I can't wait to find out.

Love Next Door (9-10): Someone remind me while I'm still watching this? Because the only thing in this show that consistently entertains me are the second leads.

Romance In The House (1-7): I gave this show another chance after previously bailing halfway through episode 1, and I'm quite enjoying it. Not the biggest fan of the dad though. On the other hand, Tae-pyeong might actually be a real green flag, and not one of those imposters that fool people into believing they're green flags.

I was actually on holiday this week, but I'm glad I still managed to keep up with my dramas. I put Revenant and Be Melodramatic on pause for the week, as I had easier access to watch RITH, so I actually wanted to finish that while on holiday, but sadly I didn't have enough time for that.

I watched the first ten minutes of Fragile and it really is SKAM, even the handheld mood is like the original Norwegian version in a way I hadn't expected. I thought that would make me binge the whole thing right away, but apparently my plate is a bit too full right now.
Oh and SPOILER ALERT discussing things that happen in the original as compated to those first ten minutes: "Isak" seems more openly hostile than in the original. Also, wonder how they will get around lying about something that everybody gets to know as opposed to grades in Norway that are not publicly announced.

Well, the story would [SPOILER for people who haven't seen SKAM] lead to like him anyway, ... but that he has so negative feelings toward "Eva" shouldn't be obvious from scene one ... it would make you expect her boyfriend to tell him off, if he stared meanly at her like that, wouldn't it? He should be more Iago-ish.

Going by the OG storyline, I can understand why he may have negative feelings towards her (even though it has nothing to do with her). But he's actually pretty nice to her later on (probably to fuel a misdirect there). The actual boyfriend continues to not make the best impression, but I guess that's consistent with the original.

1

Well, as I recall, Isak was never a completely sh*tty person. And he didn't specifically want Eva to be unhappy ... he just had a hidden agenda that was against her interests. And at times he gave bad advice - bad for her, good for him.

Perfect Family (Series review) - Mood progression: C- / C- / C- / D+ / D / D
Classic characteristics of a rushed makjang finale: characters get thrown into and out of life and death scenarios with very quick resolutions, antagonists either die or have brain transplants, increase in references to the show’s title. It’s just a sigh.

Romance in the House (Series review) - Mood progression: C- / D+ / D+ / D / D / D
This show is what happens when you take elements from a family sitcom and sprinkle some murder mystery dust: it’s quite bland and uninteresting to watch. And it’s not just the plot: you just knew which characters would start screaming at when.

Good Partner (Series review) - Mood progression: D+ / D / D+ / D+ / D / D / D+
As with most procedurals that struggle, this show also relied significantly (too much, I say) on its cases to carry the story. I would’ve preferred no affair but the writer clearly planned around it, so much so that the 2ML only got his arc in the finale?

Cinderella at 2AM (Episode 7-8) - Mood: C-
As the main plot collapses under the weight of one shitty mother (who we all know will get a brain transplant for the finale), the 2nd leads arc finally blossoms and uplifts the show. I would’ve also liked more of FL and bro but I’ll take what I can get.

Black Out (Episode 9) - Mood: D+
Of course Na Gyeom’s the mastermind, she’s the only lead other than the ML from that town. The predictability does make it less interesting to watch though who knows what might happen with 5 more episodes. Or that’s just me manifesting it all.

No Gain No Love (Episode 7-8) - Mood: D
The secretary didn’t seem like he had any feelings for the writer so she would’ve been friend zoned anyway, but I guess the writer wasn’t confident enough and had to perform character assassination to get the ship going. That’s not great writing?

Love Next Door (Episode 9-10) - Mood: D
Oh, it’s turned into the cancer and depression show this week. And if that wasn’t enough, the show’s strongly hinting at the ML’s mom having hidden Alzheimer’s while facing forced retrenchment and divorce papers. What’s next, cancer relapsing?

DNA Lover (Episode 9-10) - Mood: D-
You know, the plot twist would’ve been that the jersey was belonged to some random guy. But now we have the 2FL ruining things because she’s a child who wants her favourite toy, and I suspect we’re heading towards the third-quarter break-up?

Bad Memory Eraser (Episode 13-14) - Mood: D-
Ah yes, they really had the OTP go through one conflict while making up in the same episode, while saving one more for an explosive cliffhanger. Of course there’s the ultra makjang reveal where the 2FL’s dad is the stalker to ensure an epic finale.

I actually liked what the writer did with the web author and the secretary. A more nuanced approach would not have fit the spirit of the show. Instead, we get to see that she actually has very good reason to re-assess our 2ML who is already enamored of her. It also sets up nicely that important moment when her biggest fan may have to consider having her as a daughter-in-law.

I haven't seen any character assassination either. Secretary Yo just did what he was told, with the promise of his dream transfer on mind, being self-centered as usual. Mr. Chaebol Volunteer was taking responsibility and revealing his kindness (which was already seeping through here and there)... and the show forced us to think about our first impressions/prejudices.

Are You the One? 17eps
I have not watched much as Work and Real Life got busy, but I have been enjoying this one as a slow relaxing watch. Though, things are turning a biiit darker as we are getting to the core of the story and Heroine is getting her memories back. And while I was totally fine with the deception at the beginning as a war/tactical strategy to lure an enemy, I think now Uri Lord totally missed the chance to tell the truth.... and confess his true feelings.

No Gain, No Love
Every week I expect a drop in my entertainment adrenalin, but no, this show is still fun (Jiwook trying to be the man in the house... totally failing... and then cancelling the help channel 😄)... and joy... and butterflies (especially whenever they close up on the wedding ring 😊)... and the show still!! surprises me.
What a twist with Secretary Yo... and honestly, after some thinking, for me this actually makes more sense and fits the characters and what we know about them more.
I'm also wondering whether after the workplace, relationship, newlyweds (and sexual life 😁)... we also get interesting comments on pregnancy/parenting as Unni seemed to miss her Red Days.

LOVE NEXT DOOR (Ep 9-10) A rom-com is not doing well when the leads’ ex-es are nicer characters than the leads themselves. Then add the sudden story turn to melo and the ML having a personality transplant to be demanding, pushy and clingy jerk.

There was a lot of material packed into last weekend’s 3 hours, but none of it translated to chemistry between the leads. It is like watching two magnets with like-poles point together, that naturally should push apart (repel each other). The only good foreshadowing I see from “The Illness” arc is Dad’s self-esteem lifted by becoming successful selling high quality Joseon Gungjung Tteokbokki and the second couple getting back on track.

BEAUTY & MR. ROMANTIC (Lurking & Dropped) I have been extremely bothered by the FL, JY/Dora, under false pretenses taking Grandma’s generosity and money. I find it odd that no one is bothered by this when it is in plain sight. When Dora/JY regains her memories, she continues on as JY taking money from the dementia Grandma who thinks she is her long lost granddaughter. Grandma buys a nice apartment for them, then gives her hundreds of thousands of dollars of her savings. Dora uses it to pay off the family’s loan shark. It is no different than her mother scamming others. And it gripes me that JY can put a lot of energy in time finding the sponsorship actor to clear her name but never once thought about finding Grandma’s real family (she knows all their names).

The final straw was when the police show up to the apartment to investigate Grandma’s missing gold that Dora’s mom stole. JY filed the complaint as the “granddaughter” (under a known false ID). The police arrive knowing that Dora’s mom pawned the gold for money. She is a convicted felon and now a thief. The detectives would have interviewed every member of the household, including Grandma, about the crime. They would have easily found that Grandma’s dementia has allowed non-family members into her house to take advantage of her since Dora’s brothers would have had to shown their real IDs. A background check of Grandma’s real family could have shed light on her real family members and the elder abuse. The show makes the police and viewers incompetent, and the only conclusion is that JY/Dora continued her own identity theft to protect her real family more so than Grandma’s well being. It is the worst financial elder abuse shown without any legal or moral consequences.

To be fair, Do-ra/Ji-young also takes care of her amnesia-granny a great deal. Do-sik, even, has truly become her "son" (as she "remembers" him). I don't think it's a case of those siblings simply bilking a woman sliding into dementia!

As for the gold--that was just a stupid, irrelevant plot point. The Mi-ja-as-unrepentant-villain angle was worn out in episode 25...

No Gain No Love Kim Young-dae was really a bad choice. It's a romcom and they barely promoted this drama together. Shin Min-ah went alone on TEO channel and for the cook contest, they didn't pair the couple against each other...

Cinderella at 2AM I'm still wondering why the FL did this choice. She was miserable without him and she didn't enjoy a rich life with this money!

Black Out Only 3 good people... It's not a lot.

Good Partner I'm not sure this drama needed 16 episodes. After her divorce, the story lost its charm.

The Judge from Hell I'm curious about this one and happy with the actor being the ML for once!

Love Next Door Give me the romance now!

Seoul Busters Kim Dong-wook's face when he mixed/shaked his noodles was hilarious.

I still need to finish Romance in the House...

Yoon-seo originally said she took the money because she was shocked to find out that her Prince Charming was actually a chaebol, and she didn't see how the differences in their stations was going to help her have her own happy family because she didn't want to live a chaebol life (she had always planned to save that money) AND she knew that marrying Ju-won would cause a rift in his family of origin--the proof being that she was being offered money to break up with him.

However, here in episode 8, it also seems clear to her (and us), thanks to her Fairy Godfather, that she also didn't understand what she could be offering to such a supposedly perfect man. Luckily for us all, she's figured it out. She just has to love him. He certainly loves her.

2

If attractiveness of the ML is an issue, then why do people want Lee Sang-yi as the ML? He's not exactly known for being attractive.

1

It strikes me that I very well could have been one of those people, but now that I'm watching and loving the drama, I'm glad it ended up the way it did. I'm never going to be a huge KYD fan, and I don't watch anything outside of the drama so I can't speak to his absence or presence in any of that, but I've enjoyed his performance so far. In fact, this may be the best performance I've seen from him. Could another actor have done just as well or better? Sure. But I'm not wishing he hadn't been cast.

As for Lee Sang-yi, I just love his character and his chemistry with Han Ji-hyun. So even if a lead role would technically have been better for his career, I'm also satisfied with him playing such an endearing second lead.

Yeah, but when the drama was announced I don't think people realized LSY would be playing a character who's more like an ML than a 2ML. I never watched Kim Youngdae in anything before NGNL, and I would say he delivered in this drama. I want to see more of him but there are bad reviews on his past drama though so that's a bit sad.

I think they have two promotions by the Prime, one is the cook off (which pairing is random by draw) and the Q&A with only Kim Youngdae with Shin Minah. I find the Q&A cute and actually sees how they have chemistry in real life. Wish they have more photoshoot though, because their visual chemistry is crazy good. I think TEO channel is promoting the drama with Shin Minah alone because she's too big of a star compared to the other casts, or is representative enough - like with Park Bogum in Wonderland promotion, or Kim Seohyung for Dog Days.

But back to kdramas, I don't remember them doing anything for The Kidnapping Day or May I Help You. Speaking if The Kidnapping Day, that drama didn't have alot of promotion either. At least May I Help You had a pair interview.

3

Yea, I just think it's normal to have only the actress when the actress is THE Shin Minah.. I feel that the popularity gap is more between the FL and ML.. at least that's what I felt since I never watched anything with the ML before this.

I really agree about ur comments on Prime. I remember seeking crumbs for Marry My Husbands and not getting much lol. At least that one got a magazine photoshoot, while here we only got Prime photoshoot once. Even the drama with Nana was really good too but there's little to none promotions.

I don't understand the promotion or lack thereof. One 2 from Prime (1 of the lead pair and 1 with the 4 mains), zero english (or other languages) translations for the TVN/TVING content, no pair photoshoots, and Shin Mina did the youtube show alone. Maybe Kim Young Dae was busy and couldn't do that one but everything else? And yet the second lead couple seems to be getting all the hype. From the very beginning.

Is Lee Sang Yi more popular than Kim Young Dae and Shin Mina?

I've seen him in a few things apparently but he was most memorable to me in Bloodhounds and his appearances on Yoo Jae Seok's youtube show.

I think the main reason No Gain No Love is as successful as it is is due to word of mouth or the social media equivalent.

I think it's because the spin-off with the second leads was announced before this show aired, so they are trying to promote the spin-off at the same time. I don't think it's because the second leads necessarily have more popularity, though they are excellent actors in their own right. But it is still strange that there is less promotional content of the main leads...KYD's other drama (Perfect Family) was airing around the same time NGNL was starting, maybe that's why??

You should watch S**ting stars, KYD was great in that role. :)

The promo situation is so interesting and quite telling of what TVN and TVING expected from NGNL, which is to say very little. Based on comments here and social media in general, I don’t think anyone expected much from it, and that likely played into how they scheduled the cast in advance. Like you said, NGNL is very much a word-of-mouth darling, and by the time it found its audience, SMA and KYD were probably already booked for other projects and couldn’t return for more promo. Whereas they knew from the get-go that people wanted to see LSY lead the spin-off, hence the photo shoot and everything else after. NGNL becoming a sleeper hit they could ride for promo was just an added bonus.

It’s a shame, really. I wish networks would put more stock in the scripts they green light, rather than just the people attached to it.

As for Prime, I’ve never known them to promote their Korean dramas. They don’t do promos like Netflix does, which I think has spoiled a lot of us. Even the NGNL cooking video is quite rare. I don’t recall seeing that kind of promo happen with other Prime dramas like Death’s Game, which was either promoted by TVING or Seo In Guk on his personal YouTube channel, but never Prime.

It's like No Gain No Love exists just to introduce the characters and idea/concept for the spinoff and that's not cool to me.

Maybe because the spinoff's concept hasn't been done before? I mean the specifically going from real world to fictional world of a webnovel, they wanted a buffer of some sort?

That probably doesn't even make sense haha. I really don't understand any of how this played out.

The network/station even makes sure to post ALL the Love Next Door content as soon as possible (and for some reason Netflix stopped previews, but that's just an annoyance of mine, to supposedly increase interest) meanwhile NGNL's content was posted a couple of days later I think.

The Game: Towards Zero

It was a most beautiful psychological story.

The characters. They were so so good! Each one of the big cast felt like a main character with how their story was told.

The background music. It's so unlike any crime show. It's low, it's haunting, it fills every scene with such a deep sense of foreboding that you practically give up on any character surviving.
They also use silence extremely well. The real scene sounds, the actors talking, I keep looking for the sound director credits because they are one of the best I've seen.

The cops are so good at their jobs that if this was a normal cop show without the added layer of a man seeing death we wouldn't have any story! Not that they are fantastically good to fit a heroic story. No, they are just good men. The are efficient, they are persistent, they are diligent. They are human, they make mistakes, they apologize and they try to do better. It's extremely gratifying to watch these people living their lives and doing their jobs.

The dialogues, the overall franknss, clear communication, social commentary, information sharing between all characters, are all such amazing themes to watch.

This show isn't a crime show. It isn't even a psychological thriller. It's a psychological melodrama.
It resembles Blind in genre, while I love Blind to peices I confess that it has a few plotholes making the timeline confusing, and especially taking the punch out of the punchline if you think too much about it. I didn't see any plotholes in The Game.

It was simply flawless until ep 10, going at breakneck speed, everything happening a good 5 episodes sooner than you would expect it to. An insanely fast game of cat and mouse, driving each lead to more dire extremes by every turn.
Then at ep 11 the speed suddenly dropped to a snail's pace. It it one of this show's only faults, which is admittedly huge: the last 6 episodes should have been 2 episodes, or 3 at the most.
I don't know if the episode count changed midway through airing, or if the writer was forced in any way, or even if they miscalculated. I can't even say I wish they had sacrificed some of the initial speed to make up for later episodes, because I absolutely loved that speed!

I still appreciated that they stuck with their story and didn't throw in random side stories to fill up the hours, but the downside was that the story suddenly started to draaaag. I totally understand any live-watchers dropping the show. I even tried watching on 1.5 speed but I loved the story too much.

The show's only other fault was that the last episode was not as good as the rest of it. I loved how they went to the utmost last possible end of the story, it felt very fitting for the title, but the editing and the dialogues weren't as good as before. Interestingly this was my exact reaction to the last episode of Defendant.

To conclude, can the people who re-edited Samsoon try...

We have all been there 🥰 and I prefer it when someone lets me know those times when I don’t expect it to happen.
