[Staff Spotlight] Get to know Starrygazer

What is the first drama that you watched (or the first drama that made an impression)? The very first K-drama I watched that sucked me into dramaland was The Guest. I usually lean towards supernatural dramas in general, but this left a huge impression on me. I could not stop watching it, and now I can’t find it streaming anywhere in my region which is a real shame as I would love to watch it again. (Yes, I can be a serial re-watcher if the mood takes me.)

What was your major in school?
In university I completed my BA in Communications and then a postgraduate degree in teaching. As for my previous employment I used to be a primary school teacher (funnily enough) before my life changed. It is impossible to keep up with the 50-60 hours a week needed for teaching now, and even though I enjoyed it — I love this job more. It’s nice to do something I genuinely love that is just for myself, and I can fit it around my everyday life.

What drama genres do you especially like/dislike?
The dramas I tend to stay away from are either high school drama (don’t get me wrong, some are good), or slice of life dramas (just because I like to escape when watching a drama). I will watch most things, though.

As for genres of drama that I like – just to name a few: supernatural, thriller, comedy, horror, action, historical, legal, melodrama and romantic comedies. (Who doesn’t need a good rom-com cleanse every now and again?)

What’s your favorite drama you recapped?
My favorite drama that I’ve recapped so far was Red Swan, just because it was so out there and all over the place and was a fun watch every week. If you can suspend belief while you’re watching a melodrama and just get sucked in, it can be a wild ride.

Which Hallyu celebrity would you actually want to meet and spend an hour with?
If I was going to meet a Hallyu star for an hour – I would probably like a coffee and a chat with Kim Young-ok. I’ve seen her in so many dramas, and I think the older generation (in general) have awesome stories to tell. Kim Young-ok has been working for so long I bet she has some tales to share.

Oh, I envy you starrygazer. The Guest is a great drama. My introduction to kdramaland isn't this cool...

I have a friend who doesn't like kdramas but she watched and finished The Guest all on her own. I just told her about it and next I knew she had finished it like two weeks later (that's super fast for her).

And you're right, Kim Young Ok probably has the entire history of kdramaland in her hands. A cup of coffee wouldn't be enough.

PS. If you say it like that Red Swan sounds pretty cool. I low-key want to watch it now.

What was your introduction...? I'm curious haha.

I am not surprised your friend loved The Guest, it was one of those I stayed up way too late to watch "one more episode" that turned out to be three more episodes.

You're probably right a three course meal probably wouldn't be enough to get all of Kim Young-ok's stories.

(If you can get sucked in without taking it too seriously I would recommend Red Swan, It's great escapism.)

All the makjangs! 😆 Starting with "Stairway to Heaven"

Exactly! It's addictive!

You would need a "second round" kdrama style, where she tells you all the important stuff on the way to the karaoke.

I'm debating if I should watch the show or just read your recaps. Talking about that, we have to say goodbye to Perfect Family this week. It'll be fun to read your thoughts on that, because I literally have no idea what's going on. LOL

Haha makjang's are fun!

I would love to see that woman on karaoke I bet she can belt out a few!

Maybe have a look at the first recap and see how you feel. (Nothing worse than starting a drama that's not really going to float your boat.)

Perfect Family has been a weird one hasn't it, quite bitty in the way it's been presented. Hopefully the ending lives up to our expectations - fingers crossed.

You're right, they're fun. All the craziness is kind of addictive. Stairway to Heaven is a more on the creepy and frustrating side, tho.

I think I've heard her sing in a drama, but I could totally be making this up. Never trust my memories.

I will!! 😊

Weird and a half. Hahaha. I'll see(read) you in the recap!

Nice to know more about you @starrygazer 👋👋! Kim Young-ok is such a great choice for a chat - not only would she know all about dramas, she's also lived through some truly transformational periods of Korean history.

Hello! Pleased to see you as new DB staff. Looking forward to reading you. You make me want to look up The Guest.

It's the scariest Korean drama I've ever seen, scarier than zombie dramas like All Of Us Are Dead and Happiness, but you know what, I enjoyed The Guest a lot more than those dramas. It's worth watching.

Yes!! 💯

Btw, The Guest is actual horror, right? Or at least more classic horror (I don't know about horror LOL).
Happiness and AOUAD are more like apocalyptic/zombie type of theme. So I would say The Guest is a different experience.

Recommendation: to watch at night, alone, with headphones and the lights off. ☺️

Oh dear, I can’t then. I’m wary of watching horror since i live alone or often travel solo. Though i checked immediately after my comment, can’t seem to find it in my usual platforms.

It's a shame. 🥺 But if you ever find it and want to give a try, even if it is for one episode, I bet you won't regret it! 😊

2

Haha it's been a while, but it did seem more like a horror type.

I endured this scary drama due to Kim Jae Wook and Kim Dong Wook and then came out liking the whole story. ^^

Definitely watched it in the daytime though. XD

Sometimes I would throw my headphones to the other side of the table, and then proceed with low volume for the rest of the scene. 🤣

3

@enriquequierecagar HAHA I forgot. I haven't watched anything scary in a while, but yes! must watch on low volume at times. 😂

2

ah you're right, they're different sub-genres of horror. I'm a scaredy cat so the only way I can watch horror is during the daytime hahaha. I would not be able to watch at night!

Hi and welcome @starrygazer !

I understand your frustration to ne be able to rewatch The Guest. It's why I download the dramas I like! I love to rewatch them.

You didn't get the mutant question! (if your favorite and hated dramas had a baby, what's the plot).

I wish I had thought to do this! I can't find it anywhere and I often get the itch to re-watch it.

I did get it but I couldn't decide. Probably The Guest meets The King: Eternal Monarch (which I found a hard slog to get to the end.) A Detective, Shaman, Priest and King trapped in a bamboo forest being chased by an evil spirit. The spirit possesses the king and takes them all back in time to the Japanese colonial time. I think I may need that coffee or a three course meal with Kim Young-ok to flesh it out haha.

Thank you to give the original dramas, sometimes I had difficulties to find the parents of the baby mutant 😅

The Guest is a great show. I've watched it twice and would definitely watch it again. Have you seen Bulgasal? It's from the same writer as the Guest. I hope the writer works on more supernatural-themed shows.
