The number of moviegoers during the extended Chuseok holiday surged nearly 50 percent, largely driven by the success of the crime-action film "I, the Executioner," reported Yonhap News Agency Thursday.

From Saturday to Wednesday, local theaters saw 4.66 million visitors, a 49.7 percent increase compared with the 3.11 million recorded from Sept. 28 to Oct. 3 last year, according to the Korean Film Council. However, this year's figure remains lower than the 5.13 million attendees recorded over the three-day Chuseok holiday in 2019.
The strong performance is attributed to "I, the Executioner," a sequel to the 2015 blockbuster "Veteran." The film alone attracted more than 3.9 million viewers over the five-day period, accounting for an impressive 84.5 percent of total moviegoers. The movie doing well was not a surprise but the number of admissions was not predicted. Movie distributors basically refused to counter-program against “I, the Executioner” giving it an overwhelming number of screens (2500) over the holiday week and a 79 percent total revenue share.

The third biggest gross went to “Begin Again,” a 2023 US movie. It has drawn 3 percent of gross revenue during holiday week and a gross total since its mid-August release to $20.8 million in Korea. During its US run, it barely broke even with $16 million box office. But it was a smash hit overseas bringing its gross revenue to $69 million.

Movie studios decided to wait until late December through February calendar period to release their best films then because those weeks are traditionally this is the largest admission period. With any investment, trying to “time the market” is a risky strategy.

I watched a documentary about some child stars and even though the technicalities may be different between East & West, the difficulities and pressures and expectations are the same and it made me teary eyed.

I didn't particularly idolize anyone when I was a child or teen but I grew up during the Britney Spears era and remember how she was treated. In hindsight, it's gross and outrageous yet at the time people acted like it was totally okay because "she's a role model" or she's supposed to be one.

I feel kpop idols go through similar things nowadays.

One thing I admired about Lee Seung Gi is that seems to be fairly well adjusted given he was in the machine since he was 15 (I counting when he got scouted and started training)

And all the other idols/entertainers who started young. I don't many idols or entertainers' name. I think BOA (from Marry My Husband) started young.

Hell, even the people who are technically adults when they get into the industry deserve a hug and acknowledgement because it is BRUTAL.
It's just worse because kids and teens are stil developing and they're extremely vulnerable.

And I don't know if anything ever changes for the better or just evolves and adapts to the changing media landscape.

This is a April 2024 story from THE ATLANTIC about Jodie Foster and growing up a celebrity. Unfortunately has a "firewall" but you can do a free trial.

https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2024/04/jodie-foster-profile/677470/

The article talks about her struggle to maintain a private life; she started as a child actor at 3 years of age. In other interviews, she's stated that she would have walked away from her film career if, as a youngster, she had to cope with today's social media environment. She's fierce, and she's smart.

I genuinely don't understand the appeal of fame especially nowadays. It seems like a complete nightmare. Always having to be "on". Always under the threat of being discarded or exposed for something. The constant exploitation and expectations.

Though in the documentary, Christina Ricci said acting was good outlet for her.

I guess if you can do your passion, that's great but it's the fame aspect that's problematic.

Keep in mind that in the case of Jodie Foster, while she was a student at Yale, she was a victim of stalking by John Hinckley Jr. who became obsessed with her after TAXI DRIVER (1976), and went on to attempt the 1981 assassination of then-President Ronald Reagan (3 others were wounded). So, Jodie Foster knows how out-of-control fame can become deadly. If anyone understands the underbelly of fame, it's is Jodie Foster -- and yet! she perseveres in carving out a private life and still succeeding in her chosen profession.

With the news that came to light a few years back about what Lee Seungi Gi went through his whole career, it's more correct to say that he perfected "looking" well and fairly well adjusted. I can't even imagine what he went through mentally and physically behind his always sweet smiling facade.

Yes. I remember how people thought it was weird that he had "enjoyed" his military service so much, but it was actually because during that time he was able to run away from it all. That explained so much of his attitude during the first year of Master in the House for me.

I don't remember much since it's been a while, but I know that they were things he did or said that I only understood after he explained his story.

Like the constant references to the military service wasn't just a concept. And things like that. It's more as in giving a different meaning to his actions.

Nowadays whenever I see him I feel anger. Other idols are probably going through much the same but seeing him, such a famous popular veteran, just fills me with anger. It's sad because I want to feel happy when I see him.

I think I felt the same way for a while. But at some point he started to look more... Free? Lighter? And that gave me a bit of comfort.

I remember him in Peak Time (he was the MC of that show), and he seemed to be in a better place. I hope he really is.

1

Then I'll go watch more shows of him to hopefully feel better eventually! ✌️

2

Fighting! ^^

1

Well, there's the bill/law named after him that's supposed to combat/prevent some of the things he went through.

The expectation for K-culture workers to always "work harder" just goes so well with some kind of drugs to make you seem cheerful and fresh in spite of exhaustion and lack of sleep.
It's hypocritical that the industry has those kind of demands and then washes their hands of any responsibility, when these stars take one or a hundred wrong steps.

In the documentary, it only featured a handful of people, but most of them had so many destructive moments or coping mechanisms at some point. Substances obviously but also issues with food, drinking, and self harming.

It's crazy. And then is why it made me tear up cause to imagine kids and teens in particular having to go through all that.

And sure nowadays people talk about mental health but for many it's still stigmatized and they're still under pressure to show up and perform. Like you're already seeing a therapist, what else do you want?! Time is money and you aren't getting any younger. There's dozens of people willing to take your spot

I've broached this subject before but once again I'm reminded about male friendships/dynamics in SK. I don't know if this is just a thing in Asian culture in general but it's certainly a thing in SK. Where bromances seem to be fostered. They can even refer to each other as 자기야 (which translates to honey or darling). Do women also do this? I don't notice strong female relationships in real life or onscreen (except for Business Proposal).
But the way it translates onscreen is still interesting to me because it's often a thing that's said when they cast talks about the cast chemistry; for example with No Gain No Love, I think Kim Young Dae said he got along with Shin Mina but he especially got along with Lee Sang Yi (I'm not sure if this was really said. Someone said he said it and I haven't found a SINGLE promotional video english subbed). And then when had his scenes with him, folks loved the "bromance" even though it was only a couple of scenes together. There's even guys who are known for being friends and hanging out or the iconic bromance of Lee Jung Jae & Jung Woo Sung.

Is it the cultural aspect of men and women being separated to prevent possible dating or dating rumors? I saw a video from I don't know how long ago where Lee Hyori said she didn't really associate with guys when she was younger because if she wasn't interested in them, she didn't need to be around them. I understand it as a preventative measure against predatory men or dating rumors but still, is it a larger cultural thing of men and woman not being allowed to solely be platonic? Jennie and BamBam were hanging out in LA, they were spotted, and then instantly the agencies have to get involved and make an official comment.

As an Asian with similarities to Korean culture, I look at it as simple human connection. What I've noticed here is the thought that the opposite gender won't/doesn't 'get' you on that elemental level as your someone from your gender does. You will have close platonic friends from the opposite gender, you will have your partner but your same gender friends are the ones you really let your hair down with and 'be yourself' without any censorship. This I've noticed is also true among girls/women.

Why censorship? So there exist some lines that you don't cross with the opposite gender. You don't want to misconstrued as showing interest when all you mean is friendship. Because a lot of people grow up with gender segregation (premarital relationships were a no-no, even now. And older people can't fathom the idea that opposite genders can be friends), they often mistake friendship for interest in a relationship. Secondly, censorship is tied back to idea that the opposite gender doesn't get you. Chances are the opposite gender will misunderstand what you say but your own gender will get what you mean without having to explain yourself. So you tend to be more free and open in a different sort of way, even if you are also open with your platonic friends.

Showing affection with physical touch and words is also really common, more so with guys. Girls do it too but it's a little toned down. No one shies from showing affection and because it's the same gender, they do it more freely. There's no need to be on your guard.

One reason I've come across in my culture as to why some women don't show deep friendships is competition among themselves. Thankfully this is changing now, but girls were generally drilled with the idea that their purpose in life was to get married. And this happens at a really young age. As a girl you imbibe the fact that all other girls are your competition. You have to best them and land the best partner possible...so instead of close friendships with a lot of affection and care, some friendships have this undercurrent of jealousy, envy etc. it makes you wonder that they call themselves friends. I don't know if this applies to the Korean culture though.

I wonder what happened to some korean actors such as Jo Yoo Jung. She was Still 17 (Thirty but Seventeen) and Adult Trainee. The latter she was a lead paired with Ryeoun.

The guy from My Secret Terrius, Kim Sung Joo, who played the tech guy. I guess he retired to have a normal life? And then I wonder what type of job you get into after being an actor.

There were some other actors I was curious about but I forgot who they were.

This weekend four of the eight dramas listed are ending! I'm watching them all too: Beauty and Mr. Romantic, Bad Memory Eraser, Good Partner, and Cinderella at 2AM.

I'm not quite sure what's coming up in their place next week (except of course Iron Family, the new weekender)...but I bet someone here knows? What's starting to air next weekend? Or, dare I ask, during the week, next week?

I also note on Hulu's website that Judge from Hell will not be starting up this weekend, but will instead start airing on Wednesday, September 25.

Oh, thanks for asking! I don't know that I'm going to be able to start Iron Family. I'm truly angry after what's happened to BMR...and I've convinced myself that it's internal broadcast politics not the writer. Since that's the case, I don't hold out hope that Iron Family will be able to do anything but pander to the largest audience possible. Sigh.

I'll always start something starring Shin Hye-sun, but I might be tired of crying over sad dramas right now...but I am honestly excited for Judge from Hell. I hope it's fun and wacky and filled with Park Shin-hye bursting through police tape lines in Chanel-esque mini-skirt-suits, wielding glowing blue demon daggers...the whole time.

Dog Knows Everything. Hmm. Well, I did watch The Pork Cutlets and wanted to pretend I hadn't by the end, so I worry that this will be more of the same. I know @hopefulromantic's looking forward to this one, though, and sometimes these little comedies are delightful.

As for What Comes after Love, it'd be really, really great for one of these Korea-Japan crossovers to really hit the mark. I'll join in to see if this is the one!!

Your post reminds me that these past few months have actually been a high point in my 5+ years of kdrama watching. I'm going to qualify my judgment of these shows, and make them all "one of the best" mainly because I have seen a lot of dramas, many I don't remember, but I can say that recently I've watched
1. what is so far, one of the best rom-coms in recent years, No Gain No Love
2. One of the best law shows in recent years, in terms of the acting, writing and the issues it raises Good Partner
3. One of the best crime/detective shows in recent years, in terms of its noir feel and strong performances Blackout
4. One of the best historical dramas in recent years, in terms of its overall interpretative accuracy and its performances ( Uncle Samsik
5. One of the best suspense melodramas I've ever seen Bittersweet Hell

And then, add to that a couple of older show recommendations that I picked up from @attiton 's fanwall, one of the best business dramas I've ever seen, On the verge of insanity 2021 and then, I don't need to qualify this one, by far the most interesting allegorical fantasy show I've ever seen School Nurse Files(2020).

And then, there is Bad Memory Eraser. "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..."

I agree that these seem to be some good times (although you'll never catch me watching Uncle Samshik...I don't even know what my problem is on that one).

Part of the reason I asked the Beanie-hive-mind (or in this case, it turns out, just @zindigo!!) about what's coming up is because I have been wondering if those of us who are finding this a productive drama season will be going into a fallow period...

These things do come in waves, and the folks who are not so well-served right now might come into their own.

I'd love a good, campy melo right now. Like Perfect Marriage Revenge, but maybe even sillier.

I'm wondering if Woo Do Hwan's upcoming Mr. Plankton might qualify as a campy melo 🤔 (December 13 on Netflix).

September has been weirdly fallow on the k-drama front but there are at least a dozen reasonably exciting choices scheduled for release Oct-Dec (and more than twice that scheduled) so hopefully things will pick up!

In contrast to @hacja though, this has been a sparse year overall k-drama wise for me. I've not watched as much and I've loved very little. Hope springs eternal for 2025 though!

I forgot about Mr. Plankton!

I've had two dramas I've really loved this year (Atypical Family and NGNL), so I'm pretty grateful.

3

@vienibenmio I love your positivity! Your comment made me think about calculating the percentage of dramas I loved this year to the number I watched. It's entirely possible that the percentage is higher than last year, even though the total watch number is lower ::: runs off to check notes:::

2

I'm very excited about Mr. Plankton!

These comments had me running to my notes too to be specific about what I've perceived as a good year 😂

I don't know about in comparison to my last two years, but this year, I've seen at least 10 dramas whose names, when I read them, spark the thought, "Man, that was a GREAT show!" Again, not better than some other show...they just make my brain light up with the excitement of an onslaught of memories of sounds and images. Not all 10 were broadcast this year. Only 6 were.

1

One thing that has been true for me is that this is my first full year as a retiree and drain on society's resources, so I've been able to watch more kdramas than I ever have--probably 40+ completed, about 5-8 dropped, so it is true that unlike @zindigo who has been forced to be more discerning, my chances of success have been increased. But I think, depending a little bit on what the end of the year brings, I would make the argument that for someone of my tastes, which is to say, not a huge fan of sageuks or slice of life genres, this has been a very strong kdrama year. Besides the ones I mentioned, there have been some decent rom-coms--Freeking Fairytale, Cinderella at 2 AM, Lovely Runner; a fantasy sageuk, Knight Flower, that I really enjoyed, (until the end when there was no romance, pfft.), ; two kind of standard but nonetheless fun cop shows--Crash and Flex X Cop; a couple of offbeat family fantasy shows, Atypical Family and A Shop for Killers, an interesting, if ultimately failed corporate scifi drama, Blood Free, an overwrought but decent political drama, The Whirlwind, and a minor but decently moody suspense/mystery, The Bequeathed. So that's a pretty good second tier, as well as the top 5 I mentioned. I really doubt that any of the last 5 years can match that number of shows that were at least of some interest to me. So don't count me among those who are longing for the good old days of kdramas!

NOTES FROM 9TAILEDVIXEN'S 3RD WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 2024

1. THIS WEEK IN LIFE

This has been a rough week

- a friend died from cancer after battling it for over a year
- another friend finally opened up to tell all of us that the boyfriend that she left was an abusive gaslighting POS
- work is burying me as my anti-violence against women nonprofit heads prepares for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

I'm now on my 3-day Mental Health weekend to just decompress and get some equilibrium back and process some big feelings.

In happier news:
- I managed to complete 3/4s of a full Aerial Yoga flow for the first time - after practicising for about 7 months, I'm finally getting there!
- I baked a Double Chocolate Buttermilk cake and it came out DELICIOUS!

2. THIS WEEK IN KOREAN WOMEN'S NEWS

(A) North Korea executes 2 women who fled and were forcibly repatriated from China

North Korea has executed two women who had been forcibly repatriated from China for helping other North Koreans in China escape to South Korea, a human rights organization told Radio Free Asia.

Charged with human trafficking, a 39-year-old woman surnamed Ri and a 43-year-old surnamed Kang were executed Aug. 31 after a public trial in the northeastern port city of Chongjin, according to Jang Se-yul, head of Gyeore’eol Unification Solidarity, based in Seoul.

Nine other women were sentenced to life in prison on the same charges.

“These two women were executed because they had sent North Korean escapees from China to their enemy country, South Korea,” Jang told RFA Korean.

(B) From spy cams to deepfake porn: fury in South Korea as women targeted again

South Korea holds the unenviable title of the country most targeted by deepfake pornography. Its female singers and actors constitute 53% of the individuals featured in deepfakes worldwide, according to a 2023 report by Security Hero, a US startup focused on identity theft protection.

Several years after South Korea made international headlines with its molka problem, the government is again under pressure to stamp out this wave of online sex crimes. A large protest is scheduled to be held in Seoul on 21 September.

On women news... this reminds me that a few weeks ago my Korean teacher asked us what we would want to be if we were born again, and most of the women in my class, including my teacher, said they wanted to be born again as men since life would be easier that way. Then our teacher talked about how she feels unsafe to even go buy something at the convenience store. And how many men feel "offended" (as in angry) when a women crosses the street because of them in the middle of the night/evening.
Like, dude, watch the news? Talk to a single real woman? Or do you need a body swap to see what is like?
No wonder girls want to be single. If a man can't even understand that much... Yikes.

I said I would want to be born again rich.

Now, like you said, if we all were born rich and relieved some of life's stress that would be another story. Fighting would be a lot easier.
But yeah, we need to try and build a bit of hope in this life too.

Hi so we had some office drama this week

in the meeting a department was fried for not loving kids and asking another colleague about the concept of an event that involved kids rearranging books without consent and it became a commotion how we do not appreciate young readers.
and the lending dep was like fried 18 minutes, and we the clueless bystanders had even no idea what we had done wrong

and then today my boss and a colleague pop up before I am about to film a clip which had been agreed on, and I had gone thought hell of a trouble to book the time for bc we had to match 5 ppls schedule write a script and get the camera - and my reading partner left in tears and later she spent 2 and a half hours in the office and yet the bosses do not understand how they are killing all will in people to do something fun. humor is not our concept, weird is not our concept

arghh
I can see why Tim Burton would do whatever the heck he wants in Beetlejuice - not a great movie but I get why he made it. he is an animator and stop motion artist but studios hate stop motion for the time and money it takes and would prefer 3D and AI but Tim Burton is trying to and is showing you do Not. Need. A.I. if you know what you are bloody doing. If you are a real artist, it is not only futile but it would be boring and bland.

I agree so much it I can't even say it that stop motion is special and the thing that works so well in stop motion does not work in easier media, because the thing about stop motion is that you can *see* how every movement has been thought through. It's like a heightened consciense, and then quirky on top.

When I discover a Korean actor or entertainer who is good at speaking english, I get interested in them and their works. Like I could feel meh about the project I'm watching but as soon as they speak english well, I'm like "well, I would like to know more about you". That's what happened with Taecyeon, Ahn Hyo Seop, and Park Min Young.

I *think* I saw Abyss first and it's whatever but then Ahn Hyo Seop spoke english and I did a double take. And then I watched a Business Proposal only because I recognized him from Abyss.

My introduction to Taecyeon was Vincenzo where he often used english. I think my favorite moment is when he's freaking out after losing. "[However many] MILLION DOLLARS!!! AHHH!!! Am I dreaming? I've never lost twice in my life. STAY IN THE CAR!
And because of that drama, I watched in other dramas such as Blind, Heartbeat, The Secret Royal Inspector and Joy, and Bring it on Ghost (Let's fight Ghost).

I think my first Park Min Young drama was Her Private Life. Same as above, after seeing her in that, I looked at some of her other roles. I think I saw her in Busted next and she was the brain of the whole show haha. Again, her knowledge of english was helpful in some cases. I don't think I've seen *that* many of Min Young's projects (probably cause they don't particularly appeal to me since I'm not a huge romcom fan). I have seen Healer and Marry My Husband. I tried City Hunter but I didn't past episode 1. (I'm not into Lee Min Ho). I tried What's Wrong with Secretary Kim and the last thing I remember from that was the mom asking if her son was gay and barely being able to get the word out. So is that episode 2 or 3?
I know it's considered a classic but eh.

Similarly I watched some Jackson Wang appearences because I heard him speak english during a Buzzfeed thing. I learned of The Rose group from the same thing.

Yeah, Taecyeon's English was fantastic.

Vanness Wu and George Hu (Taiwanese actors) both are from the USA. There's this scene in Autumn's Concerto where Vanness Wu says the name "Emily" and it just sounds so American. George Hu's story especially amuses me because, according to his bio, he literally was just visiting family in Taiwan and was scouted (it helps to be so incredibly good-looking, I guess!)

Sidenote: people can be so freaking creepy. Seriously, what possessed these people to think that was a good idea? To get a picture or an item? While I just see it as evidence for if they got arrested.

I don't know how more entertainers don't have PTSD.

Can you give up citizenship and then get it back?

I know that he's been considering or trying to get into the American acting market.

0

@britney I don't think so - even is it's possible legally and practically (honestly, idk), SK public won't see that in a good light, making all his previous sacrifices to be in vain.

I don't think so. He lived in USA during 7 years but he's Korean.

Koreans holding dual citizenships are still required to meet their military obligations. To avoid mandatory military service, a man can revoke his Korean citizenship as a few celebrities have done in the past.

I know! It's my one complaint about that show. How could they take such a gorgeous woman and put her in such ill-fitting, frumpy clothes?! If the reason is they wanted her to look more like an ordinary librarian, that's no excuse, either: librarians are some of the stylish women I've ever seen.

Her wardrobe sucks in "Familiar Wife," too.

He seems to have no sense of balance at all. I always like some of the songs individually, but they're waaaaaaaay over-played, so by the end, I hate them. You don't need to play every single song on the OST in every single episode, with long montages to boot.

When watching the Bok Gi Un character, I had moments when I thought that he's an example of there's no small parts just small actors. The reason: he's always eating up the scenes he's in haha. He makes alot of exaggerated faces and is really comical. Come to find out, he's an actual comedian! Haha

I could be wrong but it seems people are even more excited for the spinoff than they are for the original show.

Even the promotion. Lee Sang Yi and Han Ji Hyun have done photoshoots together meanwhile nothing from Shin Mina and Kim Young Dae.

Then fans have translated some of Sang Yi & Ji Hyun's interactions and none has been done for Mina and Young Dae.

0

@Britney Yeah, I've kind of gotten that vibe too. MDL's Spice Up Our Love page is full of comments of people upset it's only 2 eps and praising the poster. I wonder if it's not only in part preferring the second couple to the primary in the drama, but also Lee Sang-yi finally getting to be a lead in a romance. When the spinoff was announced, that seemed to be really emphasized. Although I'm kind of annoyed, because the announcement of the spinoff made it sound like far more than 2 episodes OTT only.

1

@guys, I would've guessed it was because of the isekai concept + spicy.
But I've seen that many people are fan of LSY, so that could be it too. I only remember him from Once Again, but since it's a weekender, I assume people would know him from somewhere else.

Anyway, I'm happy this spin off is getting so much love, because both actors are doing such a great job in NGNL. I hope they get more opportunities in the future!

2

@vienibenmio I don't know when it was announced that the spinoff was happening but it seems there is/was more promotion and excitement even before the characters interacted onscreen. I think they're only interacted 4 maybe 5 times over 2 weeks.

@enriquequierecagar yeah, I guess a new and provocative concept would stir up excitement. I don't think this has been done in a kdrama yet so that's also fun.

I didn't even realized until that all four main characters in No Gain No Love acted with each other at some point haha

Shin Mina & Lee Sang Yi (Hometown Cha Cha Cha)
Kim Young Dae & Han Ji Hyun (Penthouse)

Happy Chuseok/Autumn Festival and Friday, Beanies!

If you naively thought that after filming ended one certain tall man will take this perfect and well earned opportunity to rest a bit, you are naive summer kids – I swear, he's like that teacher from HP books, forgot his name, that kept coming to work every day like nothing happened even after becoming a ghost... Then again, LYN's insane workaholism does bear its fruits – for starters, he's been nominated for upcoming (on 25th) Weibo Music Awards, in 3 categories total: Song Of The Year - “Offer” (all the tears it squeezed from us were worth it!), Song Of The Year (live stage) – his “Love Sketchbook/Canvas” duo with Penny Tai on Our Song S6 (it got great number views or something) and Chinese Singer Of The Year. I assume they won't let him go home without at least one trophy but our resident death anthem and its artist should get minimum 2 afaik^^ Upd.: it seems he and “Offer” won the voting/were short-listed – tried to look it up, but couldn't get how WMA works. We'll know in a week anyway)))

Speaking of OSTs, he's been a little slower with them this summer compared to last year, but likely intends to make up for it now – just this week alone we're getting 3 of them! One – for LOVE OF NIRVANA ending theme – was rescheduled to drop on Saturday, unfortunately, but other 2 are already here and I like them both, tho these songs couldn't be more different. First is for movie A FROZEN RAGE (I watched trailer and think it's a dark comedy - like BLOODY dark), titled with an idiom roughly translated as “Let bygones be bygones”. Ngl, its sound caught me off guard – did he just unlock a new genre entirely? Mando-reggae – is that even a thing? But ofc, there's nothing Ning-ge cannot do musically, I sorta feel like I'm insulting the guy with my lack of faith in his genius))) Spoilery MV (again, not entire track, how I hate that!):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-VI-BaCSfE

And full audio in good quality – he's certainly got the relaxing vibe of the genre right:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPqJymJdlMA

Second OST is for currently ongoing Republican drama DARK NIGHT AND DAWN with a very beautiful name “Search for shore”. Quite a mood whiplash after previous track – this one is super angsty, he even modulated his voice to sound downcast and exhausted (or maybe it was recorded during his sick era and he took advantage of his sore throat lol). Now that I thought of it, I believe I genuinely liked all his Republican OSTs – and he's done many! Must be my thing for noir aesthetics. MV (spoilers!) – thankfully I found it reuploaded, DB filter hates Weibo links:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPqJymJdlMA

Subbed lyrics – as gloomy as you'd expect from such sound as if Offer had a 1940s-themed little sister:

On behalf of the singer I apologize for putting you in a sour mood))) Alas, since we've already here, how about a bit more emo-ing? With this kinda old cover of “Little half” (these characters have multiple meanings, but I believe this is a correct one) of cutely looking him in a pink shirt damn, I wish I suited pastels this well! I found original translated and it's one of those “not moving on after breakup” tracks – performed by female singer initially, which is likely the reason it doesn't sound too annoyingly desperate lol.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1dqgx2Ro38

Depressive love ballads are like an abyss – the more you listen to them, the more you need^^ An even older cover of “Love is over” kinda puts an end to the whole thing at least. Ah, I miss the times when he regularly sang like that, tho I get that it was not the best for his health etc... Wonder if there is a way to do this raspy sound again without a damage to his vocal chords? You can kinda hear him being sick in it, but that was probably just a cold at the time – even back then he never skipped work for such “trivial” reason. Was he choosing a track to sing among suggestion in the beginning? That's one way to add extra entertainment points to a performance)))
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2YGQo8NeFo

Now that I've got into sad songs phase even my recommendations were filled with them lmao, stop it! Interestingly, his – again rather dusty – cover of “When I'm thinking of you” sounds less pessimistic than original, not sure why.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Glmp8rgIpcw

I swear I was fully ready to end our weeping phase for today, but comments for this song, “Take everything you want”, – under two separate covers no less! - were so hilarious I had to share. Basically it's original singer's – Tiger Hu – pressed fans (look, I dislike most covers of my faves songs too because I stan superior vocalists only, but that's not reason to tell people stop trying altogether!) rolling in to trash the cover and argue that Yuning's ONLY popular due to his looks. No, for real. Which, as I heard, was a pretty common sentiment during his debut era (btw, he had his official anniversary on 15th, congrats!). Oh, just how fast the night changes! I suspect he'd love to hear THAT again for a change, however nonsensical the sentiment was... Anyway, I sorta agree – yes, he looks fiiine in this video (did he style his hair himself? wow, Ning-ge, what golden hands you have! if you ever need a little side job, call me! payment is negotiable^^), and yes, he could've sound better, perhaps (song is clearly very hard and he was sick again, I believe). But this is far from terrible, wtf those people are even smoking...

Thank you Gikata. Your playlists and brilliant commentary really make the weekly grind worth it.

I cannot stop lolling at "Yuning's ONLY popular due to his looks". Yeah right!! Obviously they haven't heard a single song of his - like ever.🙄 🤷‍♀️

3

@seeker you're welcome)))

I've read before that THIS was the main argument of his haters back in his debut days, but didn't really believe it until I saw these old comments myself. Like how the hell you can go from "he's a talentless hottie" to what he had to endure lately regarding his looks? It's been only a few years during which he's only gotten prettier lol! Which only solidifies me in belief that cnetz don't ACTUALLY think like that - they're knowingly saying BS out of competitiveness ("who is he to do better than my fave?!") or something. Or it is a paid targeted smear campaign. Probably both. So stupid, honestly, I feel like I'm losing MY braincells just by thinking about it... He'd better to do so well that they all choke on their own poison^^

3

Well it's Friday, so it's time for another Stupid Question:

How does the show Our Song actually work? And, how influential is Our Song? And, in the case of LYN, how significant were his appearances on the show? Was there one or two LYN performances that boosted him to another level of recognition by those in the musical community (idk if that's the right phrase...) like producers, music directors etc?

2

@cliosservant1846 well, it's a little complicated))) Initially OUR SONG was about pairing up famous veteran singers with trendy rookies and these newly formed duos competing with each other. Main goal, I suppose, was the blend of retro and modern music (and also bring somewhat forgotten once megastars back into spotlight). Currently show is running its 6th season and this time around they got rid of veteran-rookie teams and now pair up artists with each other randomly, switching partners every episode should've been named SWING SEASON. Yuning is kind of a veteran of it himself - he was in Season1 with Richie Ren (they got eliminated midway), then with Penny Tai in Season3 (lasted full season and had a good overall score but didn't win), then he was supposed to be full time in this one as well but it didn't work out with ADWAD filming schedule, so he ended up to guest star in Eps1-2 and will be back for a grand finale, that's it.

I have to admit I skipped seasons he didn't participate in so can't say how different they were. I do think the show overall got increasingly more popular with time - S1 was obviously small-budgeted, S3 saw a huge improvement in that terms and S6 looks not cheap either. And hey, any show that survived 5 renewals must be a strong brand, right? As for his reunion performance with Penny this time - idk, honestly. They WERE quite popular together in S3, but I don't recall their stages getting this much views/buzz? At least on YT his most popular one from S3 is with another girl lol that and their eventual duo OST not so long ago are also madly popular on c-platform BiliBili, so I guess that pairing is more to cnetz tastes? Once again, I wish I could explain but I cannot. Perhaps it's just both him and Penny getting significantly more popular during last 2 years separately, leading to increased interest in them as a ship duo as well. I wouldn't call their performance all that impressive - they just sang a sweet love song rather lovely, the end^^ His other 2 stages this season weren't groundbreaking either.

Whether this nomination will help his career - probably so? In c-ent it's all about data and buzz: as long as you're trending regularly you WILL stay relevant enough to get employed. That's why LYN always puts up with a negative buzz around his name, because that's a free promo - sort of - and, soured mood aside, he does benefit from it too statistically. Insane, but that's a reality.

0

Ok, thank you that's good information. From what you are saying, it's still a venue that builds exposure for LYN, and that's worth his time. I actually like the idea of pairing veterans with newbies, but whatever clicks musically is obvious to the audience.

I'm not actually interested in fan-voted competitions (the voters skew young) on these musical shows but they do have value in introducing new performers to a big audience.

2

Opps!! Am I to assume the cnetz are deriding his looks now. 😂 Hee hee. Guess they need their eyes checked too along with their ears. Whatever, he must as you say get super duper successful - more than he already is and win enough awards to fill up all his competitors costume drama palaces.

2

Happy Friday, Chuseok/Autumn Festival, to you too!❤️

I feel like SK is really weird about bullying. It's considered a thing to be cancelled for and yet it's also allowed to some degree in everyday life. Sunbaes to hoobaes. Older folks to younger folks. Rich people to everyone under the wealth threshold. High academics vs low academics.

I'm about to mix reel and real but bear with me.

I saw a clip from the drama Dr Romantic where one of the characters was bullied, ostracized, and blackballed because he exposed a corrupt sunbae. The SUNBAE did wrong but HE was the one who was called a traitor and forced to leave his job. In reality, there were some female students who reported that a male teacher/instructor assaulted or harrassed them and THEY got backlash and threats because HE was a top teacher/instructor. And the backlash didn't even come from just other students but students' parents.

Recently some youtuber went on a bit of an apology spree because apparently he was empathetic to someone who was accused of bullying in the past. To be honest, I don't know all the specifics but from what I understand, she wasn't actually the bully or it wasn't a cut & dry situation. Regardless, the guy ended up having to apologize for the whole thing (recording the video with her).

I saw a korean movie recap about a girl (girl A) who transferred schools and became a target of bullying because another student (girl B) claimed girl A had bullied her leading her to switch schools or take off time from school or something. It was revealed that Girl A *hadn't* bullied her but was friends with the bully or something. The class turned on Girl B (leading to bullying) and blamed Girl A for not saying she was lying. Girl A was like 😑😒🫥
The class felt it was justifiable to torment someone AS A GROUP no less because they felt the person "deserved" it. Netizens do the SAME thing to celebrities when they feel the celebs do something they disapprove of. Never forget what happened to Lee Sun Kyun or Sulli or Yoo Ah In or Lee Seung Gi or Seunghan from RIIZE.
I don't totally get this disconnect where folks are totally okay with bullying folks in everyday life but then when it's revealed that a celeb may (cause sometimes it's only accussations) have done something, it's an unforgivable sin.

Not to diminish the seriousness of bullying. I know it can be a traumatizing experience.

Because classism and "community above (read: against) individual" are internalized in their society after centuries of it in the most hardcore form. It won't go away easily. There has been some voices about this whole seniority tradition needing to be abolished/reformed, but most people aren't ready because deep down they think they can just endure it until THEY will be old and authority-wielding enough to bully those beneath them instead. And they LOOK FORWARD to it rather than sincerely wanting to change anything. Don't get your hopes high - it will be a long and very painful road.

The hypocrisy is just crazy to me. And then they almost *always* take this self righteous stance. I remember one commenter said something like "it's to prevent others from following that example".

Downside of all community-oriented societies/crowds - you're either a non-sticking-out part of "the team" or an outcast in the worst way possible. Fear of being kicked out from one's "tribe" and left all alone is such a primal thing, it's hard to overcome it. They are doing it largely to not end up as outcasts themselves, but I don't think they even understand WHY it's happening and HOW this is not only wrong, but also hella destructive in the long run.

There has been for about 10 years or so a Korean-African Foundation to promote charitable activities in African countries, that is actually affiliated with the government, and it probably gets a lot of publicity. (Of course, its Korea's attempt to expand its international influence over a developing continent.) So that's I think the reason why In Kdramas, work in "Africa" has become a stand in for overseas charity

I don't know why they keep referring to "Africa" in this way though, because I'm sure that there are a lot of kdrama fans living in Nigeria, Kenya or Ghana (or Egypt or Morocco or South Africa), who might wonder why their advanced economies need Kim Young Dae to come over and hand out shoes.

Now, on the other hand, if Shin Min-A came over to a certain neighborhood on the west coast of "America" and wanted to hand out shoes to senior citizens, I'd be first in line!

Same reason Westerners say Asia/Asian when they clearly only mean China/Japan/Korea?

5
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Sort of. This is because back before the 80s Westerners used to call East Asians, Chinese or the more offensive Orientals (along with a bunch of other offensive terms). Treatment of people from Asia was not particularly good back then. Naturally, people who were not from China were offended by this. So, in the 80s, Westerners slowly started to call people from East Asia, Asians, which didn't do much to differentiate among them or their countries, but was easier than actually learning about the world outside their countries/regions.

Africa/Africans was always lumped together as one region and as far as I know and has always been known by the exonym Africa, from the Latin name for the Mediterranean coast of Africa. I don't believe there is a previous endonym or a historical name change. But, it is just as easy to lump it all together instead of actually learning about the countries or the people.

Hi, beanies de mi corazón. I hope you had a great week.

Yesterday I went grocery shopping with my mom and in front of the market stall where we were supposed to buy the plátanos, a guy was smoking so my mom decided to fix him and all his life problems in a 10 minute talk (asking "please don't smoke" and moving on? What's that?).

This reminded me of how a couple months ago I went to buy a new pair of glasses and the ahjussi there tried to fix all my life problems (selling something and letting your client go home? What's that?).

And these two incidents remind me of that scene in No Gain No Love when Hae Young was smiling but internally boiling when Gi Woon's mom told her that she take care better of Ji Wook. 😂

Total strangers trying to fix (me) my life is my least favorite trope in real life.

When we were done buying everything I said "poor guy" and my mom laughed. Then I thought "that conversation alone probably stressed him enough to buy two more packs LOL".

We spent like 40 minutes shopping and at least 20 of them were just my mom talking with people. At one moment she was like "wait, I'm going to buy Z" and I thought she meant "I'm going to MAKE Z" because she came back like ten minutes later. "I was talking about the harvest" she said as if I wasn't literally dying from carrying everything.
At least we bought my favorite cheese. 😆

Anyway, have nice weekend, beanies. 💚

Anyway, trying to reply to 9tailedVixen’s update on what’s happening on the Korean front in terms of status of women. Thank you for this. Sorry for the loss of your friend. Is there any media discussion on women getting online relationships with celebrity actors? They’ll start by reaching out that their management prevents them but he/she needs the contact with fans and all. When there is no money involved (maybe early stage), I guess it goes under the radar of not being an urgent scam? But it still is as normally it’s the other end that is in a vulnerable position. Dears, please beware. For the actors, if it were true, please get some therapy. That is why I understand bromances and sismances observed nowadays really do make sense as a way of coping with the stress of a ‘caged’ life. There’s nothing wrong with them. Enjoy your week beanies. Oh, by the way, anyone in Seoul or Busan or Gyeongju from the last week of October to early week of November? Let’s have a café meetup.

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

I am late again, but typing this while enjoying my Saturday morning coffee in silence beats exhaustion on Friday night.☕

Sadly it will not last, because this weekend all rooms need to be cleared before the workers come to replace our windows from Monday onwards. To keep my sanity I will be spending my weekdays either at the office or shopping and running errands to stay away from home. Then again, my homebody will mourn quality times like these.🪟🪟🪟

There was also a health scare that finally got resolved this week. A few months ago my gynecologist sent me to an endocrinologist because my hormones have been acting up. Fortunately I do not have Cushing’s Syndrome/Disease as originally feared. To put it simpy, I am very sensitive to testosterone and other androgens, so I need to start hormone anticonception and another hormone treatment from next month onward. Now we know where the tomboy tendencies came from!♂️♂️

I also need to lose weight, so starting this afternoon I will go swimming with my sister every Saturday. I do not look forward to battling my weak body and body dysmorphia, but it needs to be done if I want to become a healthier and happier person in the long run.🏊‍♀️💪
