News bites: September 12, 2024

Song Kang-hi, Nam Da-reum

  • Song Kang-ho (Uncle Samsik) is lining up his next drama project, starring in the new period action-thriller Inside Men (working title). Based on a popular webtoon by Misaeng creator Yoon Tae-ho, the series will be expanding on the 1980-90s world pictured in the acclaimed 2015 movie by the same title. Production is planning to start filming in 2025, with PD Mo Wan-il (The Frog, A Couple’s World) at the helm and scripts by screenwriter Lee Ki-chul (Escape from Mogadishu). [MBC]

  • Nam Da-reum (The Sound of Magic) is making his dramaland comeback in KBS’s new drama special Discuss History (roughly translated). With PD Lee Ga-ram (The Matchmakers) attached to direct and Im Eui-jung writing, the short fictional sageuk will have a young official opposing the crown prince’s eldest son, when the latter attempts to erase history in order to claim the throne. [MBC]
  • On TVING, a new poster has dropped for Dong-jae, the Good or the Bastard with Lee Jun-hyuk (Vigilante) reprising his character in this Forest of Secrets spin-off – but this time, he’s bagged the lead. Returning to our screens on October 10, the series has the original writer Lee Soo-yeon (Blood Free) in a creator role, working with PD Park Gun-ho in addition to writers, Hwang Ha-jung and Kim Sang-won. [MBC]

  • Netflix’s Gyeonseong Creature continues their story as well, with the latest poster and teaser bringing Park Seo-joon (Itaewon Class) and Han So-hee (Soundtrack #1) from 1945 to 2024. Here, our leads will newly face Lee Moo-saeng (Blood Free) and Bae Hyun-sung (Miraculous Brothers) in the action-thriller’s second season, which will be launching on September 27. [MBC]
  • KBS has a new teaser for their upcoming Iron Family, navigating a fun mess of love squares and money-stuffed suitcases gone awry. Headlined by Kim Jung-hyun (Kokdu: Season of Deity) and Geum Sae-rok (Soundtrack #2) in our talented and generational ensemble cast, the weekender hijinks will soon begin on September 28. [Newsen]
  • JTBC is preparing fun times as well, getting lacy and racy with their period comedy A Virtuous Business in their new poster and teaser set. Starring Kim So-yeon (Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938), Kim Sung-ryung (The Frog), Kim Sun-young (Queen of Divorce), and Lee Se-hee (Bad Prosecutor) as our sales ladies quartet, the period comedy will be premiering in October. Good to know Nam Da Reum is back. Just yesterday I saw his last photoshoot on Insta (long hair, probably because he is working in a sageuk).

Aww, cute! And yes! We've seen him grow over the years. Need to see him in bigger, more leading roles. ^^

Nam Da-reum already has had an incredible career. I agree with you about seeing him in the future in leading roles. No doubt he will continue to give us great performances.

However, along the lines of ‘growing’ and for some in the acting world height is a touchy subject, NDR is now 22 and his height is 5’4”. His height may or may not impact the roles he is offered. I commented before (and I know it is being presumptuous) that if I could magically add 6 inches to his height I would just to makes things a little easier for him in dramaland. Hopefully his height won’t matter one way or the other.

First off @tccolb you got me again! I consider your header pics a bait and switch. When I saw those two pics of Sang Kang-ho and Nam Da-reum TOGETHER and without reading any text I thought, “Wow! Nam Da-reum will be in a drama with the great Sang Kang-ho.” Alas, it is not to be. Anyway:
No. 1. INSIDE MEN: PREQUEL (That’s MDL’s title). Sang Kang-ho. Definitely.
No.2. KBS’s DRAMA SPECIAL 2024. STORY 1: DISCUSS HISTORY. Nam Da-reum. Definitely.
No. 3. TVING’s DONG-JAE. Lee Joon-hyuk (1984). Definitely, however I am already experiencing availability angst on this one.

A virtuous business is calling my name out of the next batch of releases but I am waiting to see if it is going to be a statement drama like Girls generation 1979 or more like the British films Calendar girls and The full Monty in its tone and messages.
